ello and welcome to the Autumn Keynsham News from your Town Council.
An interesting sign it’s autumn is the welcome return of warmer weather and a blue sky after the chill and grey skies of August. Our weather is always a topic of discussion due to its variability and capability of producing similar conditions at any time of the year. In mid-September we welcome Philippe Buisson the Mayor of our twinned town Libourne to Keynsham when we will strengthen our warm relationship so hopefully the elements won’t let us down. Development at the new Centre continues apace with Sainsbury’s providing the core retail unit due to open in November. Consultation with the residents will take place over the autumn by newly appointed illustrator David Mackie about a timeline that will extend up the path commencing opposite the Park gates and leading into the rear of the new precinct. This new feature will provide an excellent opportunity for local people, organisations and schools to input detail to a chronicle of the rich history of our town. Renewed consultation will also take place commencing this September with Sebastien Boyesen who in our summer poll was the successful artist elected to deliver our new clock. By liaising with a wide cross section of our community Sebastien will finalise his design prior to construction. The new clock will I’m sure provide a prime focus in the Centre when installed in Spring 2015. This Autumn should see the the restoration of something approaching normality with traffic flows in Keynsham to be further aided when the A431 to Bath through Bitton is also repaired as promised by the end of the year. The gridlock we have witnessed throughout the town is very frustrating and economically damaging. Given our planned growth as a community both Town and B&NES Councillors are determined that we must have an effective transport policy currently being drafted by B&NES. Best wishes,

THE CLOCK TOWER PROJECT
IS MOVING FORWARD T
he project to erect a new clock tower in the regenerated town centre has moved forward on three fronts. Following feedback from the public consultation, discussions were held with the site developers in order to ensure that the clock tower and its clock could be clearly seen down the High Street. It was subsequently agreed that the clock tower will be positioned right at the forefront of the development – like the prow of a ship – and be clearly visible on three fronts.
Clock tower As shown in the image, the clock tower will be located at the ‘end of a triangle’, creating some challenge to the square design originally submitted. Consequently, the shape was reviewed and a three sided approach was agreed. The faces of the clock will be clearly seen from the High Street, Bath Hill and Temple Street.
The application for planning permission has formally been lodged and it is hoped that this will be approved during October. The successful artist Sebastien Boyesen, will be holding workshops with the people of Keynsham in order to ‘fill in the detail of design’ for the panels. of Keynsham’s performing A consortium arts groups has been formed to promote and ensure public performances in Keynsham’s new “Community Space” in the new civic centre. The new space, with raked seating for an audience of 120, is due to open in November, along with the rest of the eagerly awaited new centre. The consortium will be ready to begin promoting a programme of performances as soon as final details for booking become available. The founders of this initiative, Simon Day of Keynsham Film Works and Ric Davison of Keynsham Music Festival, are keen to ensure that the Community Space will be able to offer Keynsham a range of high quality shows covering all performing arts genres from both local groups and professional artistes. Local groups already part of the consortium include, Keynsham Orchestra, Keynsham Action Network, StageCoach, Performance Dance School, Keynsham Light Opera Group, Phoenix Youth Theatre and Totally Maracas. YOUTH COUNCIL T
he Town Council has commissioned a Pilot Project to investigate if the young people of Keynsham would like to be involved in a Youth Council. If successful, it would be the first in B&NES. Broadlands, Wellsway, Butterflies, @one, Elim Church, Scouts, Mencap, Keynsham Town Football Team, Frys, Air and Army Cadets have had discussions with TimeOut, Community and B&NES representatives. From these discussions, there was much enthusiastic support for giving young people in Keynsham a voice. The trick now is finding a method which will encourage a significant number of youngsters to want to take it further.

In August 2014, the first introductory meeting in the Council Chamber took place where adults representing KAN, TimeOut, The Youth Parliament, Community@67 and Keynsham Music Festival met with 14 young people, twelve of whom were from Keynsham together with 2 members of B&NES Youth Parliament. Discussions with the young people centred on community and making a difference. To work towards the session, the Keynsham Young people were asked to consider one issue for the Youth Council. After some discussion which included transport, the High Street and promoting young people, they divided and settled on four issues. These were Campaigning about causes that effect young people, illegal drug taking in Keynsham, anti-bullying and equality of punishment if young people break the law. These will be taken forward to the second preparatory meeting.

WALKING FOOTBALL ‘14 D
eep in the heart of Keynsham a new form of football has been handed its debut and is proving popular with many of the locals. Keynsham Town Football Club has recently setup some Walking Football sessions organised by local coach Nick Dewfall with a helping hand from young coach/referee Laura Hawkins. This is a partnership venture between Sirona and Keynsham Town Council. The sessions are designed to give people over the age of 55 the chance to play football at their own pace whilst enjoying the healthy, social and fun benefits that football has to offer.

Walking Football made it’s debut in Keynsham on Friday 15th August with 15 participants getting involved in the session including ex-Oxford Utd all time top goal scorer Graham Atkinson. The session has been met with a great amount of positivity from players and coaches. The sessions look to keep growing and help also strengthen the Keynsham community. Walking Football has grown in popularity recently with many football clubs across the country including Bristol City, Portsmouth, Manchester City, Stoke, Blackpool all setting up sessions in their local communities as well as being supported by the FA. It was also recently featured on BBC Breakfast which has prompted an increase in demand for these sessions up and down the country. The sessions take place on the 5-a-side courts in Keynsham Memorial Park on Friday mornings from 10-11. The programme aims to screen films that have been overlooked by the mainstream cinemas completely or had very short runs and may have been easily missed.
Keynsham Film Works is a non-profit making society funded mainly by membership subscriptions. Held at the Fry Club on the Cadbury factory grounds the films are shown on the first Thursday of each month at 7.45pm, doors open at 7.15pm.
As a member you can view any of the films in the season with no pre-booking necessary. There is free parking, wheelchair access and a bar.

the threatening Hurricane Bertha, which did not materialize, and those that ventured forth were rewarded with clear blue skies and superb views from various vantage points along the route and was much enjoyed by those taking part. Alternating between short themed walks and longer hikes, September sees us setting off from our usual point at the café in the Memorial Park, and heading for a guided 3 mile walk to the Manor Road Woodlands and back looking at flora and fauna along the way. This will take place on Sunday 28th September meeting at 9.30am for a 10.00am start, and everybody is welcome, including children and dogs under control - suitable footwear is essential.

eynsham Walkers are Welcome have been in operation for some time now, with several monthly walks already organised with varying degrees of success. Junes’ launch walk to Saltford and the Manor Road Woodland was well supported but would have been even better, but the hot weather was too much for some walkers. In July, a good crowd turned out for a visit to a selection of the gardens entered in the recent Keynsham in Bloom competition. We were treated to excellent floral displays, and refreshment at most of the stops, which was all much appreciated by the walkers. On our third walk to Compton Dando and Burnett, the numbers were reduced because of

he Best Festival Yet?
Over 200 Keynsham residents performed at the 2014 Festival in a range of musical genres. 15,000 people attended the Sunday in the Park, 40 acts performed for them with Keynsham people on every stage - as well as performers from Australia and Italy. Over 1,200 people were involved in events on the Friday night - including around 700 at the Cinema Under the Stars. 14 venues in the town hosted events. Was this the best Festival yet? Many have said so. Here is a range of comments made by the public, performers, and managers:

n 10th and 11th July, gardens belonging to community groups, schools and youth groups, churches, business and members of the public together with local allotments were judged in this year’s In Bloom competition. IN BLOOM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
SOUTH WEST IN BLOOM Community groups joined the Keynsham In Bloom Community Group in making sure the town was looking its best on July 9th, when the South West in Bloom judges arrived. The judges Michael Foy and John Noble had a guided tour of the town, inspecting St. Dunstan’s Church, Old Vicarage Green, the new planters on the High Street, the Baptist Church (floral display exhibition), Keynsham Scout H.Q., Sirona Day Care Group, Keynsham Guide Group (poppy display), Sherwood Close Community Project, Castle Primary School, Keynsham Allotments, Manor Road Woodland, Keynsham Memorial Park, Transition Keynsham’s community vegetable patch and the Lion’s Trough. The tour finished at Keynsham Bowls Club.
The In Bloom Community Group have lots of projects planned for 2015 to make the town look bright, clean and welcoming and to have that WOW factor when the judges come visiting. In order to carry out all these little projects, we need more volunteers whether you are a keen gardener or just someone that would be willing to offer a few hours volunteering we would love to hear from you. Any help would be much appreciated. Alternatively, you may have a small communal area you may wish to enhance yourselves, but require a little support and guidance, we can work with you to help you create and enhance your local area. eynsham Victorian evening has been re-launched as the Keynsham Winter Festival. Plans are now underway for the Christmas Lights switch on and this year’s event will have a Winter Wonderland theme. NEW FRY CLUB AT
SOMERDALE IN KEYNSHAM project to rebuild the iconic Fry A nClubexciting at Taylor Wimpey’s Somerdale
development in Keynsham is really beginning to take shape.
Bridgwater construction firm Pollards has now finished erecting the bulk of the steelwork forming the main structure of the new Fry Club building, which will include changing rooms, five flexible function rooms, a large sports bar with a skittle alley and a multi-activity room for the various groups that use us as a base. Sports facilities will include 13 full-size football pitches – one of which will be an FA-standard floodlit pitch – plus two junior pitches, four cricket pitches and a nine-hole golf course, while the existing bowling green and tennis courts are being retained. Work on the project started in May with ground clearance and foundations being laid, but now the steelwork has gone up, visitors to the site can really see the shape of what’s to come. Kevin Thatcher, Chairman of the Fry Club, says: “It is exciting to see the new building taking shape with the steelwork now in place, providing such a visual impact, but I’m expecting it to be a more gradual process from now on. There are lots of contractors involved – bricklayers, electricians, plasterers and so on – and there’s still a lot to be done. “Everything is on track and we’re expecting to be able to start moving things in by the end of April next year. We’re hoping the new main football pitch will be ready at more or less the same time. “As the new building becomes available we will gradually transfer activities across and we’ll be working on a plan over the next few weeks looking
at how this happens to keep business continuity. We’re really looking forward to getting into the new building and starting life down there.” Functions in the existing Fry Club building will continue as normal while the sports and social club’s new home is built – but the club is already looking at ways of making the most of the exciting new opportunity the move offers to extend its role within the wider Keynsham community. “The club’s history is part of the former Fry/ Cadbury and more recently Kraft businesses. It is still used by ex employees, long term members and many local sports teams,” explains Kevin. “With the new homes and facilities at Somerdale being built around us, we now want to appeal to a wider audience and make sure we’re seen as welcoming and friendly, not as an exclusive members-only club. “At the same time as moving into the new building, we’ll be creating a charitable trust to manage the club and a company that will manage the day-today running on its behalf, and we’re hoping to be able to apply for charitable grants which we weren’t able to before. It’s a whole new beginning.” The club currently has about 1,400 members, including about 250 juniors, and offers a wide range of sports including football, bowls, tennis, cricket, netball and golf, while there are also various social functions organised including dances and entertainment. The new state-of-the-art facilities will help the club in its plan to play an even wider role within the new community at Somerdale. Kevin says, “The new club has been designed to enable a good flow of people around the building. There will be different function rooms available for

a range of different uses and we’re also looking to include a soft play area for children. “We want the Fry Club to be a place within the development where people want to come and bring their children, relax, take in the scenery, watch the cricket and where children can feel part of it all.” The new mixed-use development on the former Cadbury factory site is set to deliver up to 700 new homes, including a mix of apartments and houses, together with a primary school, employment space, plus a range of community and sports facilities. A local centre is also included in the masterplan for the site, including a small number of retail units, a medical centre, a riverside cafe and a care home, as well as a new 210-place primary school and nursery. A riverside walk will be created with a cycle/ pedestrian bridge over the River Avon, while substantial areas of public open space, including

a wetland area for wildlife, are to be established. Some existing factory buildings will be used to create 120,000 sq ft of employment space. Commuters will appreciate that Keynsham has its own railway station just a short stroll from the new development with direct services to Bristol, Southampton and London Waterloo, while Bristol city centre lies only six miles from home. The development is well located for access to the A4, the M32 and the M4. MALE VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED! Bath and North East Somerset’s Book Bugs project, which is hoping to train male volunteers as reading companions for young children in pre-schools and reception classes in Radstock and Keynsham, is still in urgent need of more volunteers. Cllr Dine Romero (Lib-Dem, Southdown), the Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children, and Youth, said; “We have had an encouraging response from the appeal for volunteers that we launched earlier last month. “A number of men have asked for more details and we really hope they will be applying to become Book Bugs volunteers.

“By visiting a nursery or school once a week for just an hour to share books, stories and conversations with the children, either one to one or in small groups, they will be encouraging young boys to take an active interest in the world of books and stories.” Book Bugs is an early years programme linking male volunteers with youngsters in their preschool, nursery or reception class. It builds on a successful pilot held last year in Paulton and aims to increase boys’ interest in books and support their early reading skills. The Book Bugs project is now looking for a team of 24 volunteers to help expand the initiative into Radstock and Keynsham. Jane Southwell, Early Years Consultant and Book Bugs project leader added: “We have schools and nurseries keen to welcome Book Bugs volunteers to visit, but not enough volunteers. We will be offering a short training programme and ongoing support for suitable volunteers who come forward. Please help us; we really need your support!” The Book Bugs project hopes visits can begin in early November. HOME GROWN PULP FICTION SEARCH Thousands of people take stories out of Bath & North East Somerset Council libraries – now the library wants residents to bring stories to them. This year the Library Service is teaming up with A Word in Your Ear and Kilter for its annual writing competition. Once again it is kindly sponsored by The Bath Chronicle. The theme is noir. That could be a classic story; sinister, moody, perhaps with a twisting narrative and set in shadowy underworlds. Or it could be influenced by contemporary Scandinavian Noir. The competition is now open, free to enter and open to all adults. The winning stories will be read at the Story Fridays event on 7 November at Burdall’s Yard, Bath. Book token prizes of £20 and £10 to be won.

COMMUNITIES CELEBRATE GREEN FLAG STATUS Four local green spaces have been awarded Green Flag status, thanks to local communities working closely with Bath & North East Somerset Council. The award, presented by the Keep Britain Tidy Group, is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK. This year Keynsham Memorial Park; Silver Street Local Nature Reserve, Midsomer Norton; and Haycombe Cemetery and Royal Victoria Park in Bath have received the award.
Keynsham Memorial Park has lots of attractions including children’s play areas, a café, a picnic area and ball sports. There is also an ecological zone with a duck pond, a bug garden and the River Chew flowing through. Keynsham Town Council manages events at the bandstand and regular entertainment is provided throughout the summer. Keynsham Memorial Park is also the venue for the annual Keynsham Music Festival. In 2014 Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Parks Team has created colourful new flower displays which have been welcomed by Keynsham residents and the Green Flag judges. he Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Councillor Martin Veal, held a reception to launch a Photographic Exhibition by Young People in Keynsham and TimeOut on Wednesday 3rd September 2014 in the Chairman’s Room, Guildhall, Bath. The aim of the project is to raise awareness that often the images we see in the media are not true likenesses and have been altered, and to help others understand the pressure these images can have on how people view themselves and their appearance.
THE PROJECT BRIEF FOR “SupermodelMe” To take “before and after” photos of young people (who are willing and have parental consent) The First image: ‘Normal portrait’ no adjustments, digital or cosmetic. The Second image: ‘SupermodelMe’ portrait after make-up and hair (by Tilly and Catlin). The Third image: Digital ‘perfection’ enhanced through photo editing copying techniques used by the commercial media and entertainment industry.
THE AIM OF THE PROJECT • For young people to understand and be aware that often the pictures they see of people in magazines/ advertising have been digitally augmented and is not a ‘true’ likeness through the process and looking at the before and after portraits.
• For young people to understand the pressure these images can have on how we view ourselves, how we look and feel about our shape. • To help build a healthy sense of self-esteem and acceptance of body image.
WHY? The SupermodelMe project is to show how the media changes images of celebrities especially in advertising. This can create unreal expectations for young people to live up to, especially young women and who decides what perfect looks like anyway! We think this is not acceptable. Girls all around the world are trying to copy these unrealistic images. This creates unnecessary pressure on their lives. So the message we want to put across in this project is “Don’t forget to love your natural self” “It is important to show what you see in magazines is not real”. “This project is important to me because the way women are portrayed in the media today is horrendous, nothing is real and people really need to see that!” “Being involved in the SupermodelMe project is important to me because I think girls worry too much about their image and have low selfconfidence. This is because of the images in magazines and adverts. There is an increasing trend of people using apps to beautify images before uploading “selfies” pictures of themselves on social media sites.

Women are continually bombarded with images of the ‘ideal’ face and figure – what Naomi Woolf calls ‘The Official Body’. Constant exposure to idealised images of female beauty on TV, magazines and
