Welcome to the Autumn Newsletter 2013. Much has gone on in the town over the last few months. The music festival was blessed with the most fantastic weather; who could have imagined that we would be able to enjoy wall-to-wall sunshine for the whole ten days and actually be able to listen to opera in the park and the Saturday night concert without having to use our umbrellas and raincoats! The Sunday event was once again a huge success and drew the usual very large crowd. The town was looking very colourful in July for the South-West-in-Bloom and Keynsham-in-Bloom judging and we are hoping that we have impressed the judges with the community projects, such as the troughs and plants at the station, which were done in partnership with Willmott Dixon and Severnside Rail and the wheelbarrows, which were planted up by some of our schools. The park looked great with the baskets of herbs and tomatoes on the railings on Bath Hill and have you noticed the start of a medieval Herber’s garden behind the Baptist church? Many, many thanks to all who helped, particularly the Scout and Cub groups who worked very hard painting benches and play equipment. Saturday September 21st is the date for this year’s Youth Festival to celebrate the many youth groups in Keynsham. I hope to see many of you there. I am sure that you are all keeping an eye on the new development at the town centre and are as impressed as I am at the speed that it is all moving forward. An exhibition at the library of the proposed piece of Art Work for the centre has raised a lot of debate and I hope that the views of the residents will be taken into account before a final decision is reached.

On 11th and 12th July, gardens belonging to community groups, schools and youth groups, churches, businesses and members of the public together with local allotments were judged in this year’s in Bloom competition. The results are to be announced at a presentation evening on Tuesday 24th September at 7.00p.m. at St. John’s Church Hall, Keynsham. This is a selection of photos of this year’s entries.

SOUTHWEST IN BLOOM Community Groups joined the Keynsham In Bloom Working Party in making sure the town was looking its best on July 16th, when the South West in Bloom judges arrived. The judges Martin Ford from Weston-SuperMare and Ian Thompson from Dawlish, Devon had a guided tour of the town, inspecting Keynsham Memorial Park, Transition Keynsham’s community vegetable patch, The Lion’s trough, the Jubilee Crown, Manor Road wildlife patch, Manor Road Woodland, Chalfield playground (Scouting project), the High Street floral displays, St. Dunstan’s Church, Broadlands Academy Kitchen Garden and Keynsham Railway Station. The Town now awaits the results which will be announced at an award ceremony on 19th September in Truro Cathedral.

GRAFFITI This was a partnership project sponsored by Willmott Dixon, Keynsham Crime Reduction Partnership and Keynsham Town Council . The Graffiti Project took place over three days at the beginning of August. A group of local young people, with support from a youth worker, worked with Graffiti Artist Adam Yoell to come up with the design and then transformed it into Street Art. The finished Art work can be seen on the yellow hoardings by the New Town centre build by the Willmott Dixon construction site.

KEYNSHAM OLD TIME DANCE CLUB Keynsham Old Time Dance Club was formed in 1958 for the purpose of providing funds for the Fear Hall in Keynsham. The club has used the Fear Hall every Tuesday from September to May and will begin its 56th season on Tuesday 3rd September from 7.30pm to 10pm. The club provides a social and friendly atmosphere with popular and classical sequence as well as popular old time dances under the instruction of professional MC’s. Regular Saturday dances are held during the season with live music. The club organises a weekend break in January and a four day break in September. KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD WINE CIRCLE The members of Keynsham & Saltford Wine Circle, enjoy a year long programme of meetings and events, not only within our own wine circle, but also with neighbouring wine circles. In August, we held our usual Summer Dance and Supper at Saltford Hall. This was a lively affair, attended by over a hundred people. These were drawn from members of Keynsham & Saltford Wine Circle, as well as members from Bath, Timsbury, Warmley and Nailsea Wine Circles plus a good contingent from Bill and Sue Mansfiied’s dancing friends that meet at the Fear Institute, Keynsham. The music this year was provided by a trio, ‘Funked Up’, who kept everybody up on the dance floor, with a good mix of sequence, rock & roll and jive music. There were breaks for the excellent supper and later, for the raffle. The following weekend we held a Summer Sior’ee, in the gardens of our President and Secretary, respectfully, Percy Mellor and Peter Church. This took the format of Pimm’s on arrival, with music and quizzes, lively conversation , a finger buffet and naturally, wine. Although it was a damp evening, the atmosphere within the gazebos was definitely warm & sunny! Keynsham Youth Fest will be held in Keynsham Memorial Park Youth Fest returns on Saturday, September 21st to celebrate the young people of Keynsham. There will be an inflatable football pitch, scooter demos, bands, performances, foodstalls and much more. Youth Fest 2013
includes dance and musical performances on the bandstand, sporting organisations giving displays, a giant inflatable football pitch provided by Keynsham Town Football Club, a selection of stalls with organisations and youth groups promoting what they offer to young people, BMX and scooter demos and competitions. the round up Some high-lights of this year’s Keynsham Music festival were not anything to do with the Sunday in the Park – around two thousand people attended the Festival events during the week, including the largest audience ever for the Saturday night Gala Concert. To enable this to happen more community groups and venues than ever before were involved in sponsoring, organising and staging Festival events. From comments received by the organisers this year’s hallmark was the quality of performers across the whole festival – from the attentive audiences for acoustic music in The Ship and The Talbot to the resounding applause for Keynsham’s young classical musicians in the Park on the Saturday.

We must remember that virtually all musicians played for free and the whole thing relies on around 60 volunteers completing over 400 man hours of work! The whole community should be thanking these people for making the Festival possible! The public’s donations – up again this year – perhaps did just that. But its always a fine line with Festival finance and nothing should be taken for granted.

Festival high points included singer-guitarist George Jones as a late stand-in rocking a packed bar at The Ship, two hundred people relaxing at The Park Café to Opera and afterwards trad jazz in the Conservative Club from a band still younger than The Rolling Stones! A packed audience for Satish Kumar’s teaching on how to Live (more) Simply, and, more nuns in The Park at midnight on the Friday than in your average convent! Three bars at festival events were drunk dry, including the Pimms at the gala concert’s massive picnic. A testament to the weather, of course, and a very useful contribution towards the £50,000 cost of the week – as were the substantial donations events from the public – without which nothing would be possible.
Rafferty, Bath’s StevieJo Dooley; and The Scribes - who will be Bristol’s next big hip-hop act – all from the excellently revamped TimeOut stage. Some Velvet Morning and Bigtopp are already half way there and it is likely that Jasmine Kennedy and Keynsham’s Foreign Affairs will be soon – all from The Top Stage. Also playing for us more than once was Bristol’s rising star Bashema who played solo to a rapt audience in The Ship earlier in the week, and then with her band on the Sunday afternoon.
High lights on the Sunday must include the performances of contemporary dance from Joli Vyann’s sudden appearances in the food arena; over 200 children engaged in the Ian McGill creative arena, some welcome bluegrass and country on the Taylor Wimpey Top Stage from Slapface. There was also the extraordinary electric guitar work from Gianni Cosso with What Flag?, and the equally extraordinary acoustic guitar work from Argentina’s Violentango, complete with real Tango dancers from Bristol Tango del Rosa school, on the Co-op Bandstand Stage.
Disappointingly only one act arrived by train this year (same as last year), but Minor Works Unit, who played on the train and later on the Bandstand Stage, were, for those who were on The Festival Train another highlight of the day. This is important because with BANES Arts funding it is important that the Festival shows that it is catering for the BANES population: this year’s attendance survey data shows just that - a considerable number come from Bath.
Every act at this year’s music festival was original or traditional – there were no covers bands - and some of them must be destined for future greatness: we were lucky to have superb sets from the young Callum
Plans for next year began with meetings the week after. Interest in the Keynsham Music Festival is growing nationally, especially thanks to Prima magazine’s rating, and there is always a need for more rewarding sponsorship and volunteers. Happy Days!

KEYNSHAM Rotary Keynsham Rotary club meet weekly at Saltford golf club. For those who are unaware the name “Rotary Club” is derived from four American Chicago businessmen who used to meet regularly. The name itself related to them rotating meetings between each other’s offices. The early mission was to serve social and professional interests of members. However the concept spread across American cities where clubs were established by charter. As the organisation grew it expanded its mission beyond personal and professional interests to utilising professional resources and expertise to serve communities in need. This mission is summed up in the organisation’s motto “Service above Self”. The current Rotary International membership is over 1.2 million Rotarians in over 200 Countries and geographical areas worldwide. The Keynsham Rotary club has just over 20 members and celebrates it’s 60th anniversary in 2014. It is a small friendly club open to both ladies and men. We come from diverse backgrounds and occupations, meeting socially, to establish long term friendship and to serve the community in a number of ways. Social activities include a skittles, boules and quiz team. Members
enjoy a meal at each meeting often followed by a guest speaker. Roughly every quarter members host family, friends and guests to a larger meeting with meal and guest speaker; often with a fund raising theme. The club members assist the community in a number of ways ranging from providing marshals for events, organising social events such as a Jazz concert or themed evening through to fund raising activities. Recent donations from Keynsham Rotary have included the Children’s Hospice South West, St. Peter’s Hospice, the Bujagali Trust which offers charitable educational support in Uganda and Rotary International’s Foundation charity, a leading force in the eradication of polio worldwide and promotion of international peace. New members are very welcome. Meetings are held between 6.30pm and 8pm each Wednesday at Saltford Golf club. Anyone wishing to know more is encouraged to come along to two or three meetings on a trial basis in order to see how the club operates. MULTI-MILLION JUNIORS FOOTBALL POUND PUBLIC TOILET TRAINING Town Football Club has been offering UPGRADE ANNOUNCED Keynsham Football training for the under 6’s to 16 year olds every Twelve public toilets will be upgraded as part of Bath & North East Somerset Council’s plan to improve the quality of facilities across the area. A £2 million contract for the next fifteen years to commence from April 2014 will shortly be awarded. The public toilets in line for a makeover are Monksdale Road, Alexandra Park, Sydney Gardens, Henrietta Park, Alice Park, Parade Gardens, Royal Victoria Park Play Area, Charlotte Street Car Park, Riverside Coach Park, Odd Down Park & Ride, Memorial Park – Keynsham and The Shallows – Saltford. Monmouth Street, which was due to be closed, will also remain open to maintain a 24 hour public convenience service in Bath city centre. Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said, “The long-term availability of these public conveniences is secure as a result of this two million pound contract. It offers the opportunity for Bath & North East Somerset Council to improve these facilities that serve green spaces, parks, and transport facilities. “Improving standards, hygiene and cleanliness for the people who use them is paramount. We also look forward to opening a new set of facilities in Keynsham as part of the town centre regeneration from Autumn 2014.” The details of the contract are being finalised, which includes detailed operating times for each public convenience.
Saturday morning, Keynsham Town Football club, Crown Field since 1985. The setup is one of the best junior football operations in the area. The Club is affiliated to the Somerset FA and the Hanham Minor and Avon Youth Leagues, in which teams from each age-group play competitive football. Coaching is every Saturday morning at the AJN Stadium (Crown Field) from 9 – 12 pm on 3G pitches, starting for the 2013-14 season on September 7th. All coaches are qualified to minimum standard of FA Level 1, which includes CRB checks, Safeguarding Children and Emergency First Aid trained. Over 250 boys and girls were involved last season and played football matches in 15 teams – usually on Sunday mornings. WELLSWAY BADMINTON LADIES CLUB The Badminton Ladies Club started in the 70’s at Wellsway School, however, since then it has moved to the Keynsham Leisure Centre, Temple Street. KEYNSHAM BOWLS CLUB Keynsham Bowls Club was founded in 1957 and has bowled in the Memorial Park ever since. Keynshams Bowling Club’s close proximity to Bristol allows the club to affiliate itself and participate fully in both the City and County of Bristol and Somerset County Bowling Associations. The clubhouse provides comfortable ‘apres bowl’ facilities including a bar with large picture windows which provide the perfect view of the green. Keynsham Bowls Club is a mixed club that also has a junior team. The club runs no less than seventeen different internal competitions, including one just for novices. On top of all of that there is also a full programme of friendly fixtures for both mens and ladies teams, with the ever popular mixed friendly matches on Sunday afternoons and the equally popular Club Night on Monday evenings.

KEYNSHAM FILM WORKS Keynsham Film Works is a non-profit making society funded mainly by membership subscriptions. Held at the Fry Club on the Cadbury factory grounds the films are shown on the first Thursday of each month at 7.45pm, doors open at 7.15pm. The programme aims to screen films that have been overlooked by the mainstream cinemas completely or had very short runs and may have been easily missed. As a member you can view any of the films in the season with no pre-booking necessary. There is free parking, wheelchair access and a bar. THE KEYNSHAM TWINNING ASSOCIATION The Twinning Association was created in 1977 by the signature of the Charter between Libourne and Wandskye. It became independent and the current President is Carole Duckett. The aim of this Association is to promote another culture, to make friends and to encourage the hospitality. Thank to this aim, the Association develops different exchanges: • Every year, the students from Libourne-Montagne wine school come to visit Keynsham and some beautiful places in the country (London, Cardiff...) • In September 2012, twenty three members of the Association had the opportunity to visit Libourne and its region (Monbazillac, Monflanquin...) These exchanges allow to people to discover the culture within it. Because all the people stay in local families who continue to speak its own tongue, cook its own dishe. The President hopes that the Twinning Association will not close and so, she continues to promote this association in the schools, because she told me : “The youth is the future of this Association”.

Position: Senior Groundsman Service with Keynsham Town Council: Since June 2000
Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. Yes. I moved to Keynsham in 1985. Q. What is your experience as Senior Groundsman? A. I worked 15 years as a Landscape Gardener and Groundsman and 10 years as a Tree Surgeon. Q. What has changed the most in Keynsham since you have worked for the Town Council? A. The Climate (more rain). We seem to have lost the British seasonal patterns. There appears to be more young people in Keynsham than when I started, but maybe that is because I am getting older! Q. What are the main challenges in your day to day duties? A. There certainly seems to be more damage/vandalism in the play areas and property generally and there is definitely a lot more litter around. Q. What do you feel the future holds for Keynsham’s play areas and sports facilities? A. Keynsham provides a very good range of play areas and sports facilities for both young children and
teenagers. I am sure that the Town Council will continue to improve and update these facilities and hopefully take on more as the Town continues to modernise and grow. Q. Away from work what are your hobbies/interests? A. I like to take my two dogs out for long walks in the surrounding countryside. I enjoy reading, mainly fiction thrillers, going to the cinema and also making broken items work! Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A. The Memorial Park, the River Chew and its amazing wildlife and the various community events i.e. Victorian Evening, Music Festival and Youth Fest. Q. What do you feel are the worst things about Keynsham? A. Inconsiderate parking in the High Street, too many coffee shops, not enough thought to infrastructure considering how many new houses are being built. Not enough jobs, schools, shops and the loss of Cadburys.

Keynsham Town Council Meetings Monthly meetings are held on Tuesday evenings at the Council Chamber, 3rd Floor, North Block, Riverside, Temple Street, Keynsham, Bristol, commencing at 7.30pm. Dates for the 2013/2014 municipal year are as follows:
