KEYNSHAM NEWS D

eep into Autumn and enjoying the warm weather I reflect on having overcome one of my main hurdles at the end of British summer time. My challenge was changing time clocks all over the house including central heating and our space age cooker. Invariably I forget a sequence which prolongs this procedure making the whole process one I could well be excused. My personal hope is that increasing pressure by MP’s and academics rids us of this annoying event. Congratulations are due to the Keynsham in Bloom Community Group which has again coordinated our great success in the South West in Bloom Awards. Our Silver Gilt award recognised not only the fantastic displays but also the initiative driven by many groups and individuals across the community – I’m delighted to say a regular Keynsham occurrence. Keynsham in Bloom awarded a variety of well deserved awards to individuals and groups including a super childrens competition in painting and sun-flower growing. Thinking of our younger residents exciting things are also happening with the development of a Keynsham Town Youth Council – Keynsham Now - which has already had its first meeting. We in the Town Council welcome having these young peoples views and working with them to address threats and opportunities impacting our town. We look forward to seeing you at our renamed Winter Festival along the High Street on Friday 28 November. This great family event was always successful as the Victorian Evening when we celebrate the illumination of our Christmas lights. However its new name will more accurately reflect the way this enjoyable community evening has evolved.

Kindest regards

Cllr Clive Fricker Chair of Keynsham Town Council

CLOCK TOWER

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE A

rtist Sebastien Boyesen, working on our new Clock Tower hailed the community workshops held during September and October as making a very significant contribution to details of Keynsham and its environment. He met with representatives of the Local History Society, Civic Society, Manor Road Woodland Group, and young people at TimeOut. In addition, during the ‘Meet the Artist’ sessions he had new opportunities to gain valuable insight into both past memories and present day thoughts from residents of all ages and

longevity of stay. One resident, who has lived here all her life, recalled the blacksmith working at the top of Bath Hill and also taking her children to the animal market ‘across the way’. It also provided a chance to discuss clock face alternatives. The public consultation feedback emphatically required that the clock face must be clear and easy to read. Most opinion rejected ‘Roman’ numerals in favour of a more modern approach but one which had style. Examples of these, along with other images of Keynsham can be found on ...http://www.pinterest.com/sboyesen/ keynsham-clock-tower/ Sebastien commented “The response has been especially positive and informative. Residents have really contributed to the development and on-going design of the clock tower”. If you were not able to attend the workshops and have memories, photographs, ideas as to the images that might in some way appear on the Clock Tower please email dianahatton@btinternet.com by the end of November.

KEYNSHAM AND DISTRICT

TWINNING ASSOCIATION

I

n September, we hosted sixteen friends from Libourne. Together we visited Castle Combe, Avebury and Berkeley. Social events included a buffet meal with entertainment from KLOGS & the newly formed Phoenix Keynsham Youth Theatre and a meal at Stockwood Vale Golf Club. This left time for outings with host families, which included visits to Bristol, Bath, Clevedon, Wells, Chew Valley and garden centres. Twinning members will pay a return visit to Libourne for a week in June 2015, when the Libourne Music Festival takes place (over weekend of 20/21 June). Why not join the association and put your name forward? Libourne is also twinned with towns in Germany and Spain. Official guests from the town visited Wellsway School, toured the new civic centre and met representatives of local organisations who plan to arrange visits for their members to groups with similar interests: the Scouts, Keynsham Orchestra & KLOGs and Avon County Rowing Club. If you belong to a club or organisation which would like to ‘twin’ with a similar group in Libourne, the association could help to set this up.

The market has had another successful year celebrating its 10th anniversary in October and is well placed for another 10 years of growing popularity as more and more people are discovering the pleasure of eating locally produced food and meeting the growers and producers.

The Christmas Farmers Market will take place on Saturday 13th December 9am-1pm in Ashton Way Car Park and if all is going to plan it will also be our last market in this venue before re-launching in 2015 in Market Walk in the Town Centre. The December Market is always a special event and we will again be joined by Keynsham Brass Band whose Christmas repertoire generates a wonderful festive atmosphere. The market itself grows to accommodate additional producers who will be offering everything from handmade Christmas Wreaths to artisan salami’s and Greek Delight; very unusual stocking fillers! ASK THE FORUM Members of the public are being encouraged to attend the next meeting of the Keynsham Area Forum on Thursday November 27. The Forum has been set up by Bath & North East Somerset Council and its partners as part of the Connecting Communities initiative, which aims to develop a more joined-up approach to tackling concerns raised by local people and improve efficiency by reducing the number of community engagement meetings about different issues. These meetings are designed to look at ways in which organisations can work together to address

local issues and as a way in which the Council and its partners can consult with local people on a range of topics. Those who attended the first meeting wanted to encourage members of the public to get involved and agreed to hold an Ask the Forum session before the main meeting in November. This will take place between 6.30pm-7.30pm, in the Community Room, Civic Centre, Market Walk, in Keynsham and will be followed by a formal meeting of the Forum from 7.30pm- 8.30pm. Forum meetings are open to the public, who may attend as observers. Members of the Keynsham Area Forum include Bath & North East Somerset Ward Councillors; representatives from local Town and Parish Councils, Chamber of Commerce and a range of community and voluntary organisations. If you live in the following parishes and have a question for Bath & North East Somerset Council, Avon & Somerset Police, Avon Fire & Rescue, your parish council or any other public service, please come along to the meeting. If you are unable to attend please email your questions to Mark_ Hayward@bathnes.gov.uk or call 01225 396975. Parishes include: Chelwood, Compton Dando, Corston, Farmborough, Keynsham, Saltford, Whitchurch, Marksbury.

SHOP LOCALLY

THIS CHRISTMAS continues we need throw our support behind small independent traders to help them thrive. Shopping locally helps to improve the local economy - research suggests a pound spent with a local business stays in the local economy for five more transactions whereas a pound spend with a national business operating locally stays in the local economy for just two transactions. These independent businesses help define our city and we hope this promotion encourages people to do more of their spending locally and introduces new customers to shops with a proud local tradition and heritage.

HERE IS AN IDEA

A

rallying cry is being issued to shoppers to support local independent stores as this year’s Christmas shopping season gets under way. The run-up to Christmas is a crucial time for traders, and people are being urged to think of our locallyrun shops when looking for presents this year. Our local High Streets have a wonderful mix of unique independent stores and to make sure this

Lets buy Christmas presents from small local businesses and self-employed people from our neighborhood who sell online or a local craftsperson who make jewellery, the amazing local florist or the local bakers that make homemade cakes, buns and chocolates. The guys that run the café or salon, lets make sure that our money goes to individual people and not multinational companies. This way, more local people will have a better Christmas.

COMMUNITY SPACE The Consortium aiming to promote performances in Keynsham’s new community space has now received a funding grant from B&NES Arts Development. So it’s full steam ahead with the possibility of the first shows and performances happening in December. For information or enquiries contact ric@keynshamfest.co.uk

which replace a collection of 100 year old buildings which were completely inadequate for current day needs.

School Boat Club open their new boathouses

The Saltford Rowing Centre, a state of the art rowing complex was opened on 27 September by Alex Partridge, a multi-medal winning British Olympic rower who learnt his craft at Monkton Combe School. After two years of detailed planning and one year of construction, Avon County Rowing Club and their partners in the development the University of Bristol and Monkton Combe School have just moved into the brilliant new facilities

400 guests were welcomed on the day including many of the sponsors and donors whose generosity enabled the project to go forward including British Rowing’s Anne-Marie Phelps and Di Ellis. The Mayor of Bath and the Lord Mayor of Bristol (himself a member of ACRC) were also in attendance. The day commenced with a row past by crews led by the Bristol Empire Dragon Boat Club and Avon Canoe Club, followed by crews from the Rowing Clubs. The biggest cheer went to an ACRC octuple comprising boys and girls representing their 8 local schools. The new buildings at Saltford provide a lot more space for boats as well as better access, proper changing rooms and a gym. There is also a large clubroom with a balcony overlooking the tranquil River Avon with a 4 km stretch of the best rowing water in the region. Rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave won his first trophy racing at the Saltford Regatta when he was at school in Marlow. “The first and the best,“ he says.

The new boathouses cost £1.1 million and were funded by superhuman fundraising efforts by all three parties who are incredibly grateful to all their many donors and sponsors. British Rowing funded the Club with a grant of £60,000 and Sport England provided £150,000 through their Inspired Facilities programme. The Duchy of Cornwall offered a new 60-year long lease for Avon County on the site and also project managed the building programme, working with ACRC’s President Antony Constantinidi who coordinated the requirements of the three Boat Clubs.

KEYNSHAM WALKERS ARE WELCOME After an Autumnal break the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome is back in action with monthly walks restarting in December - see local press and posters in public notice boards scattered around town for further details The idea of the Walkers are Welcome scheme, which has the backing of the Town Council and Keynsham Chamber of Commerce, is to promote Keynsham as a centre for walking, where residents and visitors alike can appreciate the beautiful scenery surrounding the town and the hospitality that the town and its’ traders provide. There are organised walks each month, either starting or finishing in the town, each with a walk leader on hand to supervise; and

there is always time allowed for a refreshment stop! The Steering Group have decided to alternate between a shorter themed walk, ie. nature, photographic, historical etc., which will have a expert to indicate out all relevant points of interest, and give advice on that particular theme. These will be interspersed with longer walks for the more serious walkers amongst you. We are always looking for interested people to assist us; either by suggesting a favourite walk, generally helping out, being a walk leader, or even joining the steering group to organise events. Contact us on wrwkeynsham@outlook.com or visit our website which is part of the community website:- e-voice, follow the link to community organisations and Keynsham Walkers are Welcome.

This year has seen us launch a new Boccia Club. After a trip to watch the Special Olympics at Bath University last summer, several of our members showed a keen interest with the game of Boccia. Played sitting down, it is a popular Paralympic sport and fully inclusive for all of our members.

Our junior members have had weekends away camping, annual trips to the YMCA centre where they took part in outdoor pursuits such as abseiling, zip wire and canoeing amongst others, and in May this year we took 20 of the children for a 2 night stay in Disneyland Paris.

Boccia Club runs on a Tuesday evening from 7 – 8.30pm.

Everything we do is fully inclusive and is supported by our team of 94 volunteers. Last year our incredible volunteer team clocked up a massive 9,924 volunteering hours. We are always looking for new people to join our volunteering team. You do not need to have any experience, just a fun, friendly attitude and a commitment to your role.

The clubs we run offer all of our 165 members the opportunity to take part in social activities where they can meet new and old friends, and be fully supported and secure. The clubs also offer parents and carers regular respite from the demands of caring 24/7. In addition to the weekly clubs we run we also organise day trips, weekends away and holidays. We’ve been all over the UK and enjoy visiting different parts of the country.

MEET THE TEAM CHRIS CHAMPION

Position: Cemetery Attendant Service with Keynsham Town Council: 5 months Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. No I live in Peasedown St John. Q: What is your experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker? A: I have worked for various local Councils for around 25 years, maintaining public recreational/open spaces and buildings. I also have gained many qualifications enabling me to use my acquired skills to maintain the Council’s assets to a high standard.

Q. What do you feel are the worst things about Keynsham? A. Fearful Keynsham could lose its unique Town identity, being swallowed up and becoming a part of ‘greater Bristol’, a possible reality in the near future perhaps if City planners get their way?

Q: What do you enjoy most about the job? A: The team spirit within the Council’s outside workforce, everyone helps each other. Appreciative comments from members of the public, acknowledging your work efforts is a testament not just to myself but to the dedication of the Council’s Grounds Maintenance staff for all their hard work in helpingto maintain the Cemetery grounds. Q. What do you enjoy the least? A: Working in wet weather getting soaked through especially after prolonged heavy spells and your boots picking up all the mud and weighing you down! Q. What do you feel are Keynsham’s best assets? A: The various beauty spot locations beside the river in and around the outskirts of the Town, also the Memorial Park and vibrant High Street.

out as fully as possible and returned by post with a sample cd and performer picture. A completed electronic version of the form emailed back to us would also be helpful. With so many applications it is impossible for our team to sit and wait for Internet loading and streaming. Your cd and picture will be the starting point. We will look at your links at some point in the process and publicise them for you. If you are a young local band and feel you don’t have a “strong” or professional CD to submit we understand and appreciate the problem! But in the first instance we would appreciate anything that will give us an idea.

PREPARATION 1. Place 4 to 6 tablespoons apricot jam and 2 tablespoons water in a saucepan and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally. Simmer for about a minute, remove and strain through a sieve. 2. To decorate the cake, brush the apricot glaze liberally over the top and sides of the cake. Marzipan and ice the cake around 4 days before Christmas. Roll out the marzipan to fit and cover the sides and top of the cake. It’s best to leave the marzipan to dry out overnight before icing. Roll out the fondant icing to fit and cover sides and top of the cake. 3. Sift the flour, salt and spices into a bowl and set aside. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixture and beat on high speed until very soft, fluffy and pale in colour. Gradually add the eggs to the mixture, beating well all the time until all the egg is incorporated. Don’t worry if the mixture looks a little curdled at this stage – it will be fine once you add the flour.

paper to cover the top of the cake so that it doesn’t brown too much. Make a hole in the centre of the bakewell paper the size of a £1 coin. 6. Place the cake on the lower shelf of the oven, and don’t be tempted to open the door until threequarters of the way through cooking. To check that the cake is cooked, insert a skewer through the centre, and if there’s no wet mixture clinging to the skewer, then the cake is cooked. If not, return to the oven and test again after 20 minutes or until cooked. 7. Leave the cake to cool in the tin before wrapping well in double greaseproof paper and storing in an airtight tin. Rich fruitcakes can take up to 4 hours to cool. To “feed” the cake with whisky, make a few holes in the top with a skewer and pour a couple of tea.

4. Gently fold in the flour and spices, being careful not to knock out too much air. Fold in the whiskysoaked fruits, plus the Brazil nuts, treacle and lemon and orange zest, then spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Make a small indentation with the back of a teaspoon in the centre of the cake, so that the centre doesn’t rise. You want a nice even top. 5. Place a band of brown paper around the outside of the tin and cut another double thickness of bakewell
