A meeting of the full Town Council on 4th June discussed the planning application for the Cadbury site and objected to the application with comments until such time that Highways sort out the traffic/ highways issues and that they are adequately solved to the satisfaction of the Town Council, so that the planning application can be reconsidered by the Town Council. Great progress has been made on the Town Centre site and the first glimpse of the buildings has immerged from the rubble. An artist, Seamus Staunton, has been appointed to create a piece of public art for the site and he will be meeting the residents in “walk abouts” in the town this month. Details can be found on the Town Council website and noticeboards in the town. Members of the Keynsham In Bloom Working Party, together with Willmott Dixon’s “task force” and local residents, helped Severside Community Rail brighten up the beds at Keynsham Station by planting shrubs of various species. Flower troughs, sponsored by a number of local businesses, were attached to the railings. Many thanks to all who participated. The Crown commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which was seen near the clock tower last year, has been relocated to the Memorial Park. We are looking forward to the Music Festival on Sunday July 7th. In the evenings in the week prior to the festival, the events in various venues in the town from opera in the park to jazz and much more, should suit most tastes. Tickets can be obtained either from the Town Council offices or on the night, in most cases.

VIEW KEYNSHAM’S REGENERATION on time-lapse film A time-lapse film of the demolition of Keynsham town centre is now available on Bath & North East Somerset Council’s website. The stunning film is part of a project by students at Bath Spa University providing a visual historical record of the £34 million regeneration that will provide new space for shops and restaurants, new library and One Stop Shop for local public sector services, new streets and spaces for markets and events, and low carbon sustainable Council offices. The view from 100 feet up can be viewed at www. bathnes.gov.uk/keynshamregen together with more information about the project.

• Supply & Service of Office Equipment • Multi function colour & mono photocopier, laser printers, print software, document management and much more. • Manufacturer trained technicians offering outstanding support and service • Authorised Ricoh & Sharp distributors

Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Council, said, “It is important that the Council uses modern technology to record the progress of the redevelopment so that the community has a historical record of how their town was regenerated. “People can see the excellent progress of the demolition taking place right before their eyes in the short video as the retail units and town hall are demolished and taken away section by section.” The project will show the transformation of the site and capture key events throughout the build and occupation of the premises. As the redevelopment progresses further videos will be put online. This covers the period from the start until April 2013. The work is contributing towards the courses that the students are taking. Project Leader James Ferris, who is doing a BA in Creative Media Practice, said, “The third floor of the Riverside building is the ideal vantage point for a photography project of this nature because you can oversee every inch of the site. With time-lapse photography you are able to see big changes that take place over a long period of time quickly. It has the wow factor.”

WHAT DOES KEYNSHAM MEAN TO YOU? Why is it special? Inspiring the artworks for the Keynsham new development These are the questions the arts team for the new development is asking local people in Keynsham in order to gather inspiration for their arts project ideas. “Finding out about a place from the people who live here is a very good starting point for us, and we find it’s the best way of generating ideas for a public art project. So that’s what we have been doing in June in Keynsham – exploring Keynsham’s history, its secret and querky places and the parts of the town that people love’ said Joanna Espiner, Senior Project Manager at Willis Newson, the Bristol-based arts consultants leading the public art project for the new development. In June 2013, the arts team led two Keynsham Walkie Talkies. These were walks exploring the local area with local people pointing out their favourite spots for meeting with friends, taking some time out, playing or having a coffee and favourite views.

The arts team includes Willis Newson and Seamus Staunton, a Bristol-based sculptor. Willis Newson is developing and managing the delivery of a programme of arts projects for the new development and has appointed Seamus to deliver the first arts project of the programme, a permanent artwork which will be installed somewhere on the development site. Seamus will be thinking about how his artwork can create a sense of ‘hub’ or focus to the development – in the way the old clock did on the previous site. If you missed a Keynsham Walkie Talkie, you can still tell the arts team about your special places by adding a comment or putting up a photograph onto the facebook page for the project https://www.facebook. com/pages/Keynsham-Town-Centre-Public-ArtProgramme/522765964426453 or emailing Joanna at Joanna@willisnewson.co.uk. You can also keep updated on the project as it develops and hear about other opportunities to meet Seamus and see how is design is developing by visiting the facebook page.

THE KEYNSHAM TWINNING ASSOCIATION The Twinning Association was created in 1977 by the signature of the Charter between Libourne and Wandskye. It became independent and the current President is Carole Duckett. The aim of this Association is to promote another culture, to make friends and to encourage the hospitality. Thanks to this aim, the Association develops different exchanges: • Every year, the students from Libourne-Montagne wine school come to visit Keynsham and some beautiful places in the country (London, Cardiff...) • In September 2012, twenty three members of the Association had the opportunity to visit Libourne and its region (Monbazillac, Monflanquin...) These exchanges allow people to discover the culture within it, because all the people stay with local families who continue to speak its own tongue, cook its own dishes. The President hopes the Twinning Association will not close and so, she continues to promote this association in the schools, because she said: “The youth is the future of this Association”.

Name: Aurore TOURENNE Work placement: From 28th May to 28th June 2013 with Keynsham Town Council --------------------------------------------------------------------------Q. What are you doing here? A. I am currently following a two-year post A-levels business course to become a PA (Personal Assistant). Because of that, I have to do a work placement in an organization. Q. Why did you choose to come here? A. I would like to improve my English. Thanks to my teachers, I have the opportunity to come to Keynsham. Q. Have you got any other work experience? A. I had the opportunity to do two other work placements in the communication department of a big French company. Q. Where do you come from? A. I come from Saint Sulpice de Faleyrens which is located in the south west of France, near the twinning city of Keynsham: Libourne. Q. What is the twinning between Libourne and Keynsham? A. The twinning has existed for thirty years. It offers some exchanges between schools (the students of the Libourne-Montagne wine school have the opportunity to come to Keynsham every year), people and economy.

SOUTH WEST in bloom On Tuesday 16th July, Keynsham will be judged as part of its entry into the South West In Bloom Competition. To help us improve on last year’s Silver Award, we would like to ask the local community to keep Keynsham clean and tidy by picking up any litter in the local neighbourhood particularly leading up to this date. This year’s judging route will take us from Keynsham Memorial Park, where the judges will view the Community Vegetable Patch and the Park Café planting. On leaving the Park the judges will be taken by Dial-a-Ride mini bus up Bath Hill and along the length of Manor Road to Manor Road Community Woodland. From here we will be travelling up Lytes Cary Road to visit Chalfield Close playground. Back on the Wellsway, we take the judges back into town up the High Street to visit St. Dunstan’s Church. The route will then take us along Bristol Road up St. Ladoc Road and St. Francis Road for a visit to Broadlands Academy. We will then be re-tracing our route out onto Bristol Road and along to Keynsham Cemetery. From the Cemetery we will head back into town following Station Road down to the Railway Station. Our final destination will be Keynsham Memorial Park Bowls Club.

TEMPLE STREET Open for business as usual

To help local shoppers, additional free parking at The Labbott car park has been introduced by Bath & North East Somerset Council to Keynsham for the period of the town centre regeneration. The Labbott car park can be accessed by turning into Rock Road and then immediately left. It is then a short walk through Temple Court or along Carpenters Lane into Temple Street. Around 30 spaces have been made into 2 hour free car parking upon collection of a ticket from the machine, with no return for 4 hours, although restrictions do apply on Monday to Saturday from 8am – 6pm. Two extra disabled bays and two family bays have been created and permits will no longer be valid in this section to enable a regular turnover of vehicles in the car park.

We can’t go on saying that it’s bigger and better than ever before, every year. But this year it is bigger in the sense of a genuine week-long festival – and it is better in the sense of the astounding quality of music on offer from local, national and international acts. And this comes in-spite of a reduction in our usual sources of funding and sponsorship. This year’s festival will truly rely on the generosity of the local people in ensuring its success and future. So there is, very intentionally, something for everybody, or as near as we can achieve such an aim, and a wider range of events than ever before. You can support and enjoy the Keynsham Music Festival fully without ever going near the Park on the 7th July – and that doesn’t mean that it’ll be louder than ever before! It would be unfair on all our acts, who give their services for free, wherever they have come from, to single out individuals and expected high-lights. But there are many, and full details are given of every performer on the Festival website. There is a great range of Keynsham musicians playing at the Festival together with some coming from as far away as Argentina, South Africa and Israel. There will also be a wider range of traders, caterers and side shows at the Festival than ever before, with things to buy, and try, and experience and learn. And that will include the Kilter Theatre Company with its

nationally famous production about letter writing! Also new this year are events hosted by other Keynsham organisations with the Keynsham Action Network’s “Live Simply” event with eco-philosopher Satish Kumar on the Friday night in The Park, with music from Soweto’s AfricaEntsha. And the film “Playing for Change” hosted by Transition Keynsham in The Fear Hall on Tuesday the 2nd July. We welcome The Ship and The Old Manor House as special Festival venues this year – and we have a new venue on wheels in the form of the Festival Train, bringing people in from Bath and beyond, thanks to First Great Western and the Severnside Rail Partnership. Leave the car at home – because the Keynsham Music Festival is going to be as sustainable and environmentally friendly as it possibly can be and with the generous help of the Co-op it’s going to be as Fair Trade as it can be too. It’ll be a fantastic day of music in The Park on Sunday the 7th July, but we are also offering a great range of Musical Arts events across the preceding week too – including all the usuals. Please support as many as you can. You’ll be able to obtain a special Festival wrist-band for advance donations – see us in the High Street on Sat 29th June! Full programme, event and ticket details at: www.keynshammusicfestival.co.uk or in the Town Council offices in Temple St.

AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY HOLDS COFFEE MORNING FOR VOLUNTEERS IN KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) is holding a coffee morning in Keynsham and Saltford to find volunteers that will act as ambassadors for its cause within the area. The charity, based in Bristol, is the only provider of an air ambulance service for the 2.1m people of the region, and was formed in 2008 – making it the youngest air ambulance charity in the country. Covering the areas of Bristol, Bath and the surrounding counties, GWAAC attended eight incidents in the Bath and North East Somerset area in the first four months of 2013. The event is being held on Saturday 29th June 2013 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Saltford Hall. A representative from GWAAC will be on hand to answer any questions that potential volunteers may have. Speaking of the importance of volunteers for the charity, Fundraising Manager Patricia Gaitan said: “As a small charity that covers a big area, we rely entirely on the support of our local community and volunteers to help us spread the message about the work that we do.” “We would encourage anyone who is considering volunteering to come along to our coffee morning to find out more about the work that we do and how they can help our cause.” Alongside their existing day to day commitments, Community Representatives will be asked to source potential sites within their local community for collection tins and clothes banks, as well as representing the charity at events, acting as the charity’s eyes and ears in Keynsham and Saltford as they go about their daily business. All Community Representatives will be given a day’s training as well as on-going support, and there will be the opportunity to visit the charity’s base to find out more about the work that GWAAC do. If you would like to find out more, please call on 0117 969 9344 or e-mail fundraising@gwaac.com.
