Keynsham Victorian Evening Don’t miss it

At least the weather was glorious for the Youth Fest and we are grateful to all the youth organisations who took part and made it such a huge success, it is growing every year.

19

The planning application for the regeneration of the town centre site has been passed and Keynsham can now look forward to a vibrant and sustainable future where new businesses are attracted into the town.

29

The Victorian Evening will take place on Friday 30th November. The majority of the funfare rides will take place on Ashton Way car park this year as the regeneration will have started on the Town Centre site – see the middle insert which gives details of the events and where they are located. The siting of the monthly Farmers’ market at Ashton Way has meant the numbers attending have increased and there is a greater “market feeling” to the event, maybe it is the smell of coffees being served!! Lastly I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year - please continue all your fantastic work in the community and let us make 2013 an even better year.

During September the crew and actors from Eastenders came to Keynsham to film an explosive episode in the empty shopping arcade on Temple Street. The filming which involved the Branning family characters Joey (David Witts) and Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) saw the characters trying to escape from a blazing vehicle that had crashed into a shop. Hundreds of people turned out to watch the filming and catch a glimpse of the stars over the five nights that filming took place. These dramatic episodes will be shown on Friday 23rd November and Monday 26th November on BBC1.

KEYNSHAM CEMETERY the beginning

was to search land to find a suitable cemetery, they proposed several sites but after heated opposition from Keynsham residents they were overturned.

During 1875/6 there was only one topic of conversation amongst the residents of Keynsham, the site of the cemetery. During this time Keynsham had a population of 2,245 people, some what different to the bustling 15,533 population that the town has today. During this time the burial grounds in the town were located at Keynsham Parish Church, the Baptist Chapel and the United Methodist Chapel in Temple Street. During a General Vestry Meeting in July 1875 the burial sites at that time were deemed to be insufficient and dangerous to the people of the parish. In October of 1875 this was then confirmed in accordance with an Act of Parliament passed earlier in the reign of Queen Victoria, an Order in Council was made by the Court of Balmoral that prohibited (with certain exceptions) further burials in any of the three graveyards.

It was then not until 23rd February 1877 that during a Vestry Meeting it was unanimously agreed that 2.5 acres of land on Durley Hill would be purchased at £350 per acre. At a follow up Vestry Meeting on the 18th May 1877 it was sanctioned to borrow £2,000 for providing, forming and laying out the Keynsham Cemetery and for building a chapel. The first burial at Keynsham Cemetery took place on 21st April 1878! So, as a result of a large amount furore, Keynsham Cemetery was eventually sited in the middle of a very large Roman Villa built in the 4th Century. It is thought, by the experts, that this villa was large enough to be classed as a palace – but that is another story... If you would like any information on the Cemetery please contact Keynsham Town Council on 0117 9868683 or visit www.keynsham-tc.gov.uk.

In 1876 a new Burial Board was created consisting of a chairman and eight members which were recruited from the ‘upper echelons’ of people within the community of a high authoritative ranking. Their task

GRANTS The Town Council support many organisations and groups within the town by awarding them grants. This is done in two ways, organisations are given a specific amount annually to assist with their work and other groups are asked to make applications at the start of the financial year. Who can apply for a grant? Charitable organisations, pre-school playgroups, youth clubs, sports clubs, art groups and advice organisations. Applicants must be a properly constituted body.

The total budget available for 2012/13 was £20,000, this means most grants are relatively small amounts. The maximum award is normally £1,000. How do I apply? If you think your group might benefit from a grant you can contact Dawn Drury (Deputy Town Clerk) at Keynsham Town Council on 0117 9868683 or email deputytownclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk for an application form. Application forms for the 2013 grants will be available in April.

How much is available? The Town Council gives variable grants, considering each application on its merits. Contact us today to advertise in Keynsham News on 01761 410141 or email us at info@ignyte-uk.co.uk

Victorian Evening This year’s annual Keynsham Victorian Evening will take place on Friday 30th November and this year’s theme is Christmas Trees. Here at the Town Council we have been busy arranging a full programme of entertainment including stalls, fairground rides and workshops. There will be a great line up of music on stage from Keynsham Light Opera Group, Keynsham Brass Band, St. John’s Church Youth Choir, 2386 Air Cadet Squadron, Totally Maracas and Alice Blyth, Wellsway pupil. This year’s compère, Jimmy Mack will entertain the audience in between performances with his marvellous balloon sculpting skills. The evening will start at 6.15pm when the Town Crier will lead a procession of the Upshot Circus Arts Stilt walkers, 2386 Air Cadet marching band, Santa, donkeys from HorseWorld and all the children who have made giant willow Christmas trees at earlier workshops. At 6.30pm the Chairman of B&NES, Councillor Rob Appleyard and Chairman of Keynsham Town Council, Councillor Gill Hellier will be on the stage at the junction of Charlton Road and the High Street to welcome everybody followed by the Christmas lights ‘switch on’ approximately after 7pm.

We have been running a children’s Christmas Tree Colouring Competition and the prize winners will receive certificates and prizes on the night, along with the winners of the best decorated (with a Christmas tree theme) shop window display. There will be so many events happening on the evening you will be spoilt for choice. The popular craft fair is back again this year and will be in the Fear Hall, a puppet show from ‘Signpost Puppets’ will be in the Keynsham Baptist Church, a Punch & Judy show in the Library and plenty of stalls along the High Street selling gifts, festive food and drink. There will also be a free Christmas Tree Decoration craft workshop in the Key Centre for children. 10 lucky children will be invited to hang their decoration on the Co-op Food Stores Christmas Tree. As in previous years the town centre roads (High Street, bottom of Charlton Road, part of Temple Street, the Civic Centre car park) will be closed to traffic from 3.30pm until 10pm. KEYNSHAM CHURCHES

Keynsham has a number of churches which cover all denominations, many of which are members of ‘Churches Together’ in Keynsham & Saltford.

On Saturday 22nd September hundreds of young people gathered in the Keynsham Memorial Park to attend the third Youth Fest. The event was to raise awareness of the positive activities that the young people of Keynsham can participate in and also promote the wide range of services and organisations that are also available in the town. Organisers of the Youth Fest hailed the event a huge success and praised all those that attended for their behaviour and involvement in the festival. The festival was launched at noon with a parade that started by the fire station, through the High Street and ending at the Keynsham Memorial Park. The parade consisted of Crucial BMX team, Keynsham Air Cadets Marching Band, TimeOut Youth Group, Freedom Dance, Wheels for All, African Sambistas and Avon Fire & Rescue. Also in the procession was The Battle For The Winds theatrical group, their performance tells the story of a quest to gather the winds from across the South West to power the Olympics and Paralympics sailing events which included circus skills and their unique cycle powered wind machine. The Keynsham Youth Fest marked the last performance for the tour. Once the parade reached The Memorial Park the festival was then opened by B&NES Chairman Rob Appleyard, Keynsham Town Council Chairman Cllr Gill Hellier and Cllr Roy Staddon. Cllr Staddon was chair of the Town Council when the skate park was launched and it was his initiative to have a yearly event that celebrates the young people of Keynsham. During the event there were performances from Freedom Youth Dance group, African Sambistas, Signpost Puppet Theatre, Sue Hill School of Dancing Elite Group and Keynsham Air Cadets Marching Band. There was also an impromptu fantastic performance arranged by the young people from TimeOut drop-in centre that involved the Police, Freedom Youth Dance Group, Keynsham Rugby Club and others doing the Macarena...this was one of the highlights of the day. The day was full of events to take part in that included

a series of demos organised by Crucial BMX in the skate park, rugby sessions with Hitz Bath Rugby, rugby sessions and free inflatables provided by Keynsham Rugby Club and Bristol Rugby Club, a large football pitch supplied by the Somerset FA and football sessions with Keynsham Town Football Club. For those people who wanted to enjoy something a little more relaxing there was fishing by the river with Fish Wish, chillout areas provided by the local churches and the opportunity to try bowling with the Keynsham Bowls Club. There was also the opportunity to learn CPR with St John Ambulance and learn life saving skills with Keynsham Life Savers. The event was mainly funded and organised by Keynsham Town Council and also part funded and supported by the Quest project (funded by Bath & North East Somerset Council and Future Bath Plus), Keynsham Lions Club and Tesco. Keynsham Town Council Chairman, Gill Hellier said “The Park was full of young people enjoying themselves, Bristol Rugby, Bath Rugby and Keynsham Football club all gave coaching lessons and Keynsham Bowls Club organised taster sessions. The Bandstand was the venue for music and dance – all helped by glorious Autumn sunshine”. PC Lisa Hawtin Avon & Somerset Police said “The Youth Fest was a great success, celebrating youth from the local area. The police even helped mark the occasion with the Macarena alongside Bath and Bristol Rugby teams and Keynsham Timeout.” Mark Willcox youth worker for Keynsham Town Council said: “It has gone incredibly well. It’s great the Town has a festival geared around young people. Keynsham Youth Fest is establishing itself as part of the Keynsham calendar. “ Dawn Drury Deputy Town Clerk of Keynsham Town Council said “the festival was a success and it gave the opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate its young people.”

MEET THE TEAM FACT FILE

Gary Hibbitt Position: Groundsman based at Keynsham Cemetery Service with Keynsham Town Council: Since November 2001 Work Experience: White goods engineer, Projectionist and Cinema manager, School caretaker, Groundsman.

Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. No I live 2 miles away in Brislington. Q. What is your experience as a groundsman? A. 11 years with Keynsham Town Council. Q. Has the job changed since you were appointed? A. Yes, The process of grave digging has been modernized with the use of a digger and steel shoring system making it quicker and safer, recycling of flowers and plants into compost to be used around the cemetery by staff and members of the public, more community involvement within the cemetery environment. Q. What do you enjoy most? A. Meeting members of the public and working outside. Q. What do you enjoy the least? A. As a family man I find preparing graves for children the most difficult and working outside when it’s -11. Q. What do you feel the future holds for cemeteries? A. I feel there will always be a need for cemeteries but feel it will move away from burials and move towards cremation. Cemeteries will become less intimidating and more acceptable with better facilities for visitors. Q. What are the main challenges you face in your job? A. Preparation of graves as there are so many people you have to consider and keep safe, Undertakers, mourners, vicars/ministers, members of the public, owners of graves around the area you are working, myself and work colleagues.

Q. What do you consider to be Keynsham’s best assets? A. The Cemetery, Manor Road football pitches, the Music Festival and Victorian Evening. Q. Away from work what are your hobbies/interests? A. I play Skittles and find this a great way to socialise, I enjoy fishing as this is a great way to relax and unwind, I am a volunteer for Cancer Research helping at the Race for Life and publicising other events and spending time with my family.
