The judging for South West in Bloom and Keynshamin- Bloom has taken place and the results will be known in September. We would love to see more entries next year in the Keynsham–in-Bloom competition as there were some wonderful gardens which were not entered. We hope the autumn will bring its usual warm spell and a chance to enjoy the abundant fruit and vegetables it brings. The Keynsham Youth Fest on September 22nd in the Memorial Park promises to be another event not to miss, starting in the High Street with a carnival style youth parade including the Battle for the Winds vehicle. Many local youth organisations will be present showcasing the best of Keynsham youth and talents. There will be taster events in various sports to be sampled as well as scooter and BMX demonstrations.

19 We would like to express our thanks to all who made the Music Festival another great success, despite having to set up on the morning in a mini monsoon which caused the duck race to be abandoned! However the weather did improve for the main part of the day and nearly as many people attended as in the previous year.

Wansdyke Play Association were invited to host a ‘Day of Play’ for a group of dads and their children at Castle Primary School in Keynsham. The day started with two workshops in “risky play” activities (ideas that dads can do again and again in their own time with their children for low cost). Around 50-60 fathers were firstly shown how to light fires in adverse weather conditions, with damp twigs and limited fire lighting equipment. They all managed it, and also all made themselves a cup of tea! Along the way they learnt the basics of risk assessing and managing fires and were able to show these to their children. The dads and their children were then shown a number of play ideas that involved projectiles - things you can throw, fire, shoot and catapult! All the activities needed a lot of guidance from the dads there to make sure it was all safe for children, and they rose to it taking great care to show the children how to play in a fun but safe way! In the afternoon there was then a big play session, with children and parents freely choosing activities, making up new games, inventing contraptions, building dens and generally having lots of fun. It was truly brilliant to see and the WPA Community Playworkers at one point said to each other - “We’re not really needed here, the dads are doing all the playwork themselves!”. The day co-incided with Father’s Day on the Sunday and also linked with the BANES Celebrating Fatherhood Campaign. WPA hopes to take the day at Castle School as a great example of what can be achieved when bringing Play into schools. Many schools have struggled to engage fathers in children’s school lives and WPA thinks Play might just be the way to do it!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE - BE A MENTOR! The Keynsham-based community project, Community@67, is looking for mentors for a new mentoring scheme to help change the lives of young people in the local area. Mentors will help young people to access employment, education or training and to make positive changes to their lives by meeting regularly with the young people selected and covering a variety of subjects to help them access employment as well as to raise their self-esteem. Mentoring@67 is an activity-based, one-to-one mentoring programme which is committed to making a difference to young people aged 18-25. Mentoring@67 placements are unique and varied, and aim to match mentors to their mentees based on interests and similarities. You do not require set qualifications (but you do need to be at least 18 years old), you simply need to be able to support the mentee to learn, grow and develop. Mentoring has been recognised as being key to engaging with young people and helping them build their confidence, skills and development on an individual basis. Mentors also gain a great deal from taking part in the scheme and they are able to make a major contribution to the development of a young person. One mentor commented, “I feel that the mentoring project enabled my mentee to take more of a responsibility for his actions. I found that it was a point of contact for him to explain how he was feeling and why he acted in a positive or negative way. It had certainly helped him focus more throughout the year. He had worked really hard over the year and it did show in his actions in school.” Clare Hudson, Chair of Community@67, said, “We are really excited about this mentoring scheme, we will be working with Keynsham Youth Service and the community to provide valuable support to our local young people. We are grateful to the South West Foundation for funding to run this scheme.” Mentors generally deliver a minimum of one session per week over the course of a year, each session is a minimum of one hour. Free training is provided for mentors and successful applicants will also be CRB checked. To apply to be a mentor and for more information about new Mentoring@67 programme, contact Alison Finn on Mobile: 07874 232029 Email: mentoring67@live.com For more information about Community@67, contact Clare Hudson, Chair of the centre on Mobile: 07737 742300 Email: community67@gmail.com Web: www.community67.org
NEW MATHS CLUB
A new after school Maths Club is being launched for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils at the Community@67 community centre at 67 Queens Road, Keynsham. Maths@67 runs every Wednesday afternoon in term time from 4-5pm for Year 5 and 6 pupils from any of the primary schools in Keynsham and surrounding areas. Castle, St John’s and St Keyna have expressed their enthusiasm for the project as a complement to their lessons. Children can bring their maths homework and work through it under supervision with help given when needed or just join in the fun maths activities on offer. The venue is only able to take 12 – 15 young people, so if you are interested please get in touch. Squash and biscuits will be provided during the break. The club is being run by Sheila Crocombe, an experienced maths teacher. She explains, “I wanted to start the club to help local children to improve their confidence in maths. Many children are able to achieve much more than they think once they have a little extra help and they might even find that learning maths can be fun.” Community@67 aims to run projects at the centre which benefit the local community. Clare Hudson, Chair of Community@67, says, “Community@67 and Maths@67 are run entirely by volunteers. Whilst there are private tutoring options for maths available in the area, the cost of the sessions puts them out of the reach of many. Maths@67 will provide an affordable option and is very convenient as we are based close to three of Keynsham’s primary schools. There is a suggested donation of £1 per child per session towards the running costs of the centre but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.” For more information or to book a place at Maths@67, call 0117 9863961. Community@67 runs a varied programme of regular activities from Book Club to Internet Café and Craft Sessions. For more information on any of the activities, visit www.community67.org, Email: community67@ gmail.com or call: 0800 998 7990 or 07737 742300.

KEYNSHAM town plan Keynsham will experience significant change in the future as key development sites are brought forward for redevelopment. The initial consultation for the Town Plan was carried out in 2009 through contacting key community groups and meeting local residents at events such as the Farmers’ Market to establish the key priorities and needs for the local area. The initial findings of the research enabled the steering group to produce a detailed questionnaire for individual households to complete. The questionnaire was distributed to all Keynsham residents, businesses and community groups during October 2010, closing date for responses was the 31st December 2010. The new Town Plan represents the views of the people of Keynsham and has taken 3 years of work by a team of volunteers to produce after analysing the individual responses. Every home in Keynsham received the Town Plan Action Points at the beginning of August.
A vision for the area has been developed based upon the consultation carried out with local people. These aims are: • To enhance the town by physical development • Improve the economy and provide better jobs • Make Keynsham ready for the future • Help Keynsham to capitalise on its location • Help Keynsham remain proud and independent As part of the regeneration strategy for the town centre, the Council has identified five priorities that look to address local challenges and deliver the community aspirations: • Improve the Shopping Experience: • Providing larger units on the High Street to attract more national retailers • Provide space for existing retailers to expand • Manage the traffic to make the High Street more pedestrian friendly • Create space for markets and cafes Creating New Jobs The Town Hall, Riverside and Somerdale have the opportunity to be major employment destinations that can anchor each end of the High Street, attracting higher quality office occupiers and increasing the footfall on the High Street.
On the 1st August 2012 the Keynsham Town Plan was launched at the Town Council offices where Councillor Rob Appleyard, Chairman of B&NES council congratulated the team for over three years of hard work. Keynsham

In 2009 Keynsham YouthFest launched a new skate park - the first youth focussed space in the Town Centre’s Memorial Park. It was set up by young people, youth and community groups working closely with the Town Council. Each year our YouthFest supports and enables local young people, showcases new opportunities and youth groups. In 2012 we want YouthFest to increase opportunities for young people to take a more active role, ‘be seen’ and have a positive voice in the Town, challenging negative perceptions of ‘youth’. 2012 key activities planned for the festival are: • High Street carnival style youth parade with guest performance by Quest: Battle for the Winds (part of the South West Cultural Olympiad) • stall holders & activity areas • bandstand talent showcase, scooter and BMX demonstrations • Banner/ BMX/scooter decoration –for the first town youth street parade • Drumming training – African Sambistas • Dance workshop / taster and costumes • Quest reporter workshop with Suited & Booted • Zumba workshop This years youth fest will include: • Opening of the event at 1pm by Chair of Bath & North East Somerset Councils, Roy Appleyard. • Performance of Battle for the Winds • Scooter and BMX demos and competitions run by Crucial BMX in the Skate park. • Rugby sessions with Hitz Bath Rugby • inflatable football pitch by Somerset FA • Fishing by the river Avon with fish wish • Chillout area provided by local churches • Free inflatables 16
• Football sessions with Keynsham Town Football Club, • Try Bowling with the Keynsham Bowl Club • Learn CPR with St. Johns Ambulance • Various youth organisations stalls On the Bandstand: African Sambistas drumming and dance workshop, Zumba workshops, performances by Miffy and Rosa, Freedom Dance group, signpost puppet theatre, Sue Hill school of Dance Elite Dance group, Air Cadets Marching Band, DJ Robbie. For more information contact Mark Willcox, Youth Worker Keynsham Town Council 15-17 Temple Street, Keynsham, Bristol, BS31 1HF Tel: 0117 9868683 Mobile: 07534071466 Email: youthworker@keynsham-tc.gov.uk Website http://www.keynsham-tc.gov.uk/Core/ Keynsham-Town-Council/Pages/Default_5.aspx
The event aims to: • Provide an event for Keynsham Youth. • Raise the awareness of the positive opportunities that are available for young people to participate in. • Promote the wide range of services and organisations that are available to young people. • Provide a Festival setting for young people. This project gives important positive diversionary activity, each designed with the input of young people from the area.
Battle for the Winds @ Keynsham YouthFest 2012 The theatrical show Battle for the Winds tells the story of a quest to gather the winds from across the South West to power the Olympics and Paralympics sailing events – it’s part of a procession to launch Keynsham Youth Fest 22 September, and the parade starts at 12 noon.
Youth Fest Parade route
The parade will start at the car park by the Fire station and go through the High St, past St. Johns Church and down through The Park into Keynsham Memorial park to start the Festival. As well as Battle for the Winds, joining the Parade will be Crucial BMX Team, Keynsham Air Cadets Marching Band, Keynsham Army Cadets and the Keynsham Junior Football Club, Air Cadets Marching Band, Time Out Youth Group, Freedom Dance, Wheels for All, African Sambistas, and Avon Fire and Rescue. Keynsham Youth Fest will mark the last performance of the Battle for the Winds South West tour, including circus skills and their unique cycle-powered wind machine - a “flatbed” man-powered vehicle which becomes a portable stage. The vehicle will lead the youth parade through Keynsham High Street to Keynsham Memorial Park to launch YouthFest with a highly entertaining performance.
Youth Festivals
Youth Fest 2012 includes dance and musical performances on the bandstand, sporting organisations giving displays, a giant inflatable football pitch provided by Keynsham Junior Football Club, a selection of stalls with organisations and youth groups promoting what they offer to young people, BMX and scooter demos, and competitions run by Crucial BMX. Youth Fest is funded by Keynsham Town Council and this year supported by Bath and North East Somerset Council and Future Bath Plus. For further information contact Mark Willcox, Keynsham Town Council

The festival costs around £50 000 to stage every year. It could not continue without our main sponsors the Town Council, together with valuable contributions from Wilmot Dixon, Taylor Wimpey, I J McGill Transport Ltd, B&NES Council, The Co-operative, Keynsham Park Café, Churches Together, The Talbot Inn, Lucas and Highgrove Vets and the Keynsham Lions. The committee is already planning for next year’s festival and is keen for new people to join. The next meeting of the Keynsham Music Festival Committee is on Thursday 27th September at 7.30pm in the Town Council offices in Temple Street. After the wettest summer for 100 years, it is good to report the Keynsham Music Festival 2012 survived and in some areas thrived, though these were mainly indoors! This year, the first for the new Keynsham Music Festival Association Limited, increased the pre-festival events to eight. The committee tried to include all types of music. This included Opera in the Park [and rain] with Bell’aria, carefully tented by the Café in the Park, Great Western Chorus in St John’s Church, Bath Spa String Quartet and Adam Purnell, classical guitar and local performer, in the Park; Brujerio, playing exciting Latin rhythms, in Coffee#1, the Blue Notes at The Conservative Club and Nathan Sheppard at The Talbot. All these events were well supported and showed that there is more to the festival than just the Sunday. There was also a public showing of Grease on a big screen, in a tent because of the rain, in the Park, on Friday night and those who attended loved it. On Sunday 1st July, surprise, surprise, we awoke to rain. It rained and rained but at 11.30am, it stopped! If the rain had continued for another 30 minutes, the festival would probably have been cancelled. However, with herculean efforts from the many, a festival grew out of the mud. The people of Keynsham didn’t really believe it and the site remained empty until around 1.00pm then people started to arrive. We had the usual four stages and many, many wonderful performances from mainly local bands. The numbers were down on last year with thousands of people attending and giving £7319.27 in donations.

KEYNSHAM cemetery Safety Testing of Headstones Keynsham Town Council wishes to inform owners of graves at the Cemetery that memorial safety testing will commence in September 2012. The testing will conform to nationally agreed standards and is in line with the Faculty issued by the Chancellor of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Memorials tested will be those erected since September 2011 and those memorials re-erected following failing during previous testing. The test involves a visual inspection, followed by a trained member of staff standing at one side of the headstone and placing a hand on top of the stone, applying a firm (not severe) pressure. Anyone who has any queries or concerns regarding the procedure or wish to be present when the memorial is tested please contact the Town Council office on 0117 9868683.

KEYNSHAM FARMERS MARKET: NEW LOCATION
Established over 7 years ago with support from the Chamber of Commerce and B&NES Council the market has steadily developed into a well-established, lively and much loved monthly event utilising the Town for both a busy farmers market with award winning local food producers and a browsing area of guest stalls which can include stained glass, sculpture, plants or local community groups. The quality of local food however must take centre stage and in 2010 it was shortlisted as one of the best in Somerset. There’s a good balance of quality basic niche products such as Fussels award winning Rape seed oil products, Deerleap Chillies and Mendip Lavender and for a monthly treat top up on Radfords Fudge! This very popular market is now in Ashton Way car park adjacent to Keynsham’s busy High Street. It is bursting to the seams with a huge variety of food plus an alfresco fair trade refreshment area, occasional art stalls & regular live music! We are now set to expand! The next markets are 13th October, 10th November and 8th December. For more information about the market visit www.somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk or call on 01373 814646.

Reading through reams of consultation documents to find the few paragraphs which relate to Keynsham Town Council plus slow responses and frustrations on occasions to move projects forward. Q. What do you feel the future holds for Town Councils? A. I am not sure how the ‘Big Society’ and the Localism Act is going to go but as long as there is co-operation from district and unitary authorities, Town Councils should be able to increase their responsibilities for the benefit of the local community. Q. What are the main challenges you face in your job? A. Learning to be more realistic about what can be achieved in the hours I have available and managing to juggle the different elements of the job which vary widely.
