ewly in post, I’m delighted to introduce this latest edition of our newsletter. Following the elections in May, our Town Council now has eight new councillors - new members, new ideas and a renewed commitment to serve the residents of Keynsham as best we can. Together with a change in the administration of Bath & North East Somerset Council, we hope to ensure a more dynamic and focussed emphasis on the development and wellbeing of our town. At last, road works in the town centre have been completed allowing easier and safer access to Market Walk, the library and other areas. Gradually retail outlets are being occupied so hopefully the whole precinct should soon be thriving. The spotlight will be on this spot on Saturday 19th September at 12 noon when our new Clock Tower will be unveiled. Read more of that on page 12. The vitality and dedication of our many local organisations was again demonstrated as we held the annual Town Council Grant Awards evening. Bringing happiness, hope and friendship to young and old, improving our environment and reinforcing the huge sense of community we have in our town, their work is both humbling and inspirational. Thank you from all of us. Finally, this year, our Winter Festival on Friday 27th November will have an increased focus on families, community and our businesses. The Ashton Way Fun Fair will be replaced by smaller, traditional ‘hook a duck’ type attractions around Market Walk, commercial stalls will give way to community based offerings, and with the stage this year being located at the top of Temple Street, we really want to bring the whole of the town centre alive on the night for Keynsham. KEYNSHAM WINTER FESTIVAL FRIDAY 27TH NOVEMBER 6.00PM – 9.00PM

015 will see lots of new and exciting changes for the Keynsham Winter Festival and Christmas lights switch on. This is a popular community event which thousands of local people attend and will be themed around the pantomime of Peter Pan. This year, we will be encouraging all age groups to come along and join in the town’s celebrations. There will be the usual procession through the streets, a variety of entertainment by local community groups on the stage (which will be located in Temple Street), street entertainers, competitions and activities in various locations around the town. The fun fair is being scaled down and shops and local businesses are being encouraged to stay open and join in the fun. The Keynsham Winter Festival Committee are working towards making this an exciting community event that can be enjoyed by all members of the family. Look out for our posters and adverts giving details of pre and on the night activities e.g. our annual children’s colouring competition, the Businesses and Traders window competition, children’s craft workshops and an on the night Peter Pan character fancy dress competition. We need you to make this a truly ‘Keynsham’ evening.

015 has been a busy time for Keynsham in Bloom Community Group. Our High Street has looked spectacular with hanging baskets and planters. We now have 12 floral planters along the High Street. Keynsham Scouts and Beavers under the direction of Ian Carter have also got the Bloom bug and planted up four of the concrete planters in Ashton Way car park. They have done a fantastic job, in enhancing the car park. The railway station railing troughs are also looking great and certainly provide a WOW factor for station commuters. We will have to wait until 24th September, when the results of the South West in Bloom competition will be announced. Fingers crossed, all our hard work and also the work of the communities that we work with has paid off and we bring back a gold. Keynsham In Bloom presentation evening will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 29th September at Keynsham Scout Hut.

CANDLES OF REMEMBRANCE
Do you know anyone who makes a real difference to people’s lives in Keynsham.
The annual Candles of Remembrance service will take place at Keynsham Methodist Church on Keynsham Town Council Citizens Award publicly Saturday 7th November, starting at 3.00pm. This service is an opportunity to remember children of acknowledges and gives thanks to residents any age - either recently or a long time ago, who who make a real difference to people’s lives have died. and positively contribute to the community in Keynsham. KEYNSHAM YOUTH SERVICE
SUMMER PROGRAMME
The Youth Service had three separate trips to Bristol which included the Shaun the Sheep Trail, A visit to the museum M Shed and Laser Fusion.
KAYAKING Young people from Keynsham went to Bath to Kayak on the river over 2 sessions. They had an opportunity to learn from an instructor the skills needed when kayaking in a river.

Sugar Loaf Mountain Climb & Survival Camp: As part of the Bush Craft Summer School, young people had an opportunity to participate within two challenges. The first was a mountain trek up Sugar Loaf Mountain. Although it was very challenging all the group made it to the top and there was a huge sense of achievement for all involved. The second challenge was the survival camp where young people had to build a shelter, forage, collect wood and make a fire to cook with. Young people also took part in team building exercises as well as games such as tree identification.
The Youth Service spent a week in the Tintagel Close area and had a BBQ for the young people as well as games.

ALLOTMENT Young people harvested the first crops and took them home to cook with parents. TimeOut will also use this produce as part of its cooking programme for September with the theme being Organic Food. Young people were hard at work preparing the allotment for the In Bloom judges. Young people had an opportunity to meet and discuss with the judges how they feel about having the allotment and the benefits from it. The results of the South West In Bloom and the local Keynsham In Bloom will be announced in September and all of us have our fingers crossed.
TIMEOUT IN TERM TIME From the 1st September TimeOut goes back to the term time programme of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 7pm – 9.30pm. There is a 50p entry fee (on Tuesdays & Thursdays) and activities include cooking sessions every Tuesday, music studio recording, filming project, running club, female only session, table tennis, pool, computers for internet use, CV workshops & job searches.

CLOCK TOWER UNVEILED AT LAST! After two years in the planning, consultation, research and development, our new Clock Tower will finally be unveiled on Saturday 19th
September at 12 noon.
The public art project has involved hundreds of Keynsham residents through workshops, consultation, contributions of images and in some cases actually appearance on the glass panels. It has been designed to showcase Keynsham’s history both past and present and demonstrates the rich heritage of our town

You are invited to come along from 11.30am to be entertained by Keynsham Brass Band, the official unveiling will take place at 12 noon and the Brass Band will again play for you afterwards. THE EXCAVATION
OF THE CEMETERY They believe they have located part of a religious healing sanctuary which could be connected to the recently identified Roman town of Trajectus. A broad trench has been dug across part of a Roman building identified in the recent geophysical surveys. Bryn Walters, Director of the Association for Roman Archaeology said he is “optimistic that the newly located remains will be prove to be a detached temple fronting the great villa building”.
F
resh excavation work has taken place in July at Keynsham cemetery, on the site of a possible Roman temple. Volunteers from Bath & Camerton Archaeological Association (Bacas) have been hard at work uncovering a section of wall in the Cemetery extension to try and piece together what a neighbouring building revealed during archaeological surveys in the 1990’s might have been. The trench has yielded some clues, including tesserae - the small tiles used in creating mosaics - some pottery and glass, a piece of carved Bath stone indicating there was once an archway and signs that a doorway was later blocked up with stone, one featuring one of Keynsham’s even more ancient ammonites. In 1877 substantial remains of a large Roman building were uncovered by workers building mortuary chapels. Archaeologists have spent two years conducting geophysical surveys in part of the old Victorian burial ground.
The cemetery was first officially excavated by Arthur Bulleid and Ethelbert Horne, members of the Society of Antiquaries of London, between 1922 and 1924 after more remains and mosaic floors were found while graves were being dug. The work revealed a building positioned around the largest court of any rural Roman structure in the UK and embellished with exotically designed rooms at either end of its main west wing. Mosaic panels recovered from the elaborate south-west corner are on permanent public display in the new Keynsham Civic Centre.

ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS climax of the Butterflies Voice project
T
he 18th Keynsham Music Festival proved as popular and successful as always and featured a number of extra attractions. 1500 attended the programme of events during the Monday to Friday Festival week while around 2000 people were in The Park on the Saturday afternoon for a range of first time events that made the Festival weekend a two-day event for the first time. The Saturday Keynsham Classic and Vintage car rally gave a procession through the High Street and attracted many viewers into the Park. And all exhibits were Keynsham and Saltford! Meanwhile folk dancing and performing gave colour to Market Walk and carried on into the evening in the performance tent with good audiences from 2 till 10pm, and of course the Keynsham Orchestra’s Gala Concert carried on as normal with another huge crowd. The Saturday followed a week of evening events that were all successful and included a large audience for Simply Opera in the Park, completely sold out events at The Old Manor and Pomegranate, and a range of music from classical, early, jazz and world in more venues, and with more local musicians than ever before – including the
The Festival Sunday, though marginally hit by mid-afternoon rain, still attracted around 10,000 people and featured a growing quality of music and local music in particular. One of the most talked about highlights was the Sam Evans Band who are surely set for great things. Keynsham’s Foreign Affairs are already well on the way towards national acclaim and the Top Stage was packed for Bigtopp and Bohemian Embassy. Remind yourself of the evening’s finale with the excellent video at: https://youtu.be/lcopxY0dA1Q New to the Sunday Festival was a whole afternoon of dance performance on the LoveDance stage, brought to us in conjunction with Bath Dance, which featured a full afternoon of local, and professional dance performances and gave a colourful and popular focus point to the food arena. It was also great to have a full complement of young musicians on stage in the Community performance tent from Broadlands Academy. There does appear to be a quiet revolution forming where people are beginning to rail against being dictated to by the banks and large conglomerates and realising that small is better. Very thought provoking!”
The Keynsham Music Festival is now more community based than ever before and its growth is reliant on community and local business support. The return for the town economically is considerable as illustrated by last year’s Audience Agency research, and this year a particular move by the Festival Directors – ensuring that all the bar outlets in the Park were local – will have ensured that even more money goes back into the local economy. Meanwhile the Festival remains largely free and reliant on Council grants, donations and local business sponsorship. The Festival Organisers and Directors would like to thank everybody – who helped, donated, sponsored, performed and attended. KEYNSHAMNOW THE FIRST YEAR KeynshamNow, the Town’s Youth Council, has been meeting monthly for one year. The core group formed from the voluntary youth groups of the town started meeting in August 2014. Elections at Broadlands and Wellsway followed in February 2015. The group is established and now is the time to start to make a difference for the young people of Keynsham. There have been two significant changes in recent months. Millie Gregg has taken over as Chair of the group. Ed Joseph who attended the meetings as the B&NES Member of the National Youth Parliament, has helped us grow but will be leaving to attend Portsmouth University. Ed is a sad loss as he has guided the group into understanding the link between local and national youth democracy. He was also able to

show KeynshamNow how youth politics locally and nationally worked and how young people could make their voices heard in our own adult local politics. He spoke to the Town Council about his work at their meeting on Tuesday 18th August. With the start of a new school year, we aim to have clear objectives for the next twelve months, with an emphasis on learning what we want to achieve and going for it. In September, we have Martyn Russell, a Magistrate who deals solely with youth crime coming to discuss with us how the justice system tries to educate young offenders. We also hope to have a workshop where we can learn more about the strengths of the individuals who make up KeynshamNow in order to move forward. It is hard to believe that a year ago KeyshamNow had not even met, a lot has been achieved but much more needs to be done before this Town Council project can be seen as a success.

KEYNSHAM RADIO HOUR
HITS LISTENING PEAK T
he weekly Keynsham Hour made by Keynsham Town Community Radio (KTCR) and broadcast by Somer Valley FM is currently the station’s most listened to podcast. Keynsham Town Community Radio began producing its one hour programme in February 2015, which can be heard on Somer Valley 97.5 FM and on the station’s internet stream at 1pm every Thursday. The show has featured local and B&NES councillors being questioned about the local developments, a feature by children from St Keyna School, local authors, a 93 year old artist, live studio performances by local musicians and bands and a range of local community groups describing their activities. The Keynsham Hour has been first with the news on a number of occasions, and has afforded local musicians their first radio plays. KTCR has been set up within Community@67 in Queens Road and spearheaded by a small group of volunteers who are keen to develop the project. The idea for community radio in Keynsham has been a long standing ambition but previous attempts by groups to work with existing radio stations have been unsuccessful. The project team first met together in 2014, following a commission by Bath & North East Somerset Council with Somer Valley FM to undertake radio broadcast training for local volunteers. A group of people have completed the training and are actively participating in the production of the weekly show, the Keynsham Hour. The project was also awarded a grant from Keynsham Town Council to improve the KTCR studio, so that more volunteers can be trained and outside broadcasts can be made. The Keynsham Hour features reflections on Keynsham news, local gossip, community spotlights
and almost entirely Keynsham music. Community radio enables local people to develop a programme that is unique to their neighbourhood and provides a voice for the whole community. KTCR is really keen to get more people involved to help produce and extend programmes that are of interest to all ages and cover all aspects of the community, so any groups or people locally that are interested in making radio should get in touch. KTCR is currently accessible to people that have access to the internet or are in range of the Somer Valley frequency 97.5FM – at 1pm every Thursday. HAVE YOUR SAY: PLACEMAKING PLAN Keynsham residents are being given the opportunity to have their say on a range of plans for the future of the town. Bath & North East Somerset Council wants to hear the views of local people on a number of key issues that will form part of the Placemaking Plan. Consultation will involve an informal drop-in event at the Key Centre, Keynsham Methodist Church, Keynsham High Street on Tuesday September 15. The event, which will run from 2pm-8pm, will include exhibitions and details on: • Key principles and recommendations within the draft Keynsham Transport Strategy. • Possible site options for a new Leisure Centre in Keynsham. GLL, the new organisation responsible for leisure facilities in the town, will be present to talk through proposals. • Site proposal for employment land East of Keynsham. • Draft Keynsham Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan • Draft Keynsham and Saltford Air Quality Action Plan.

It will also signal the start of a 12 week consultation on the Draft Keynsham and Saltford Air Quality Action Plan. Local residents will be able to submit their comments on the other pieces of work at the event or thereafter until October 2. This will be followed by an eight-week formal consultation period on the Placemaking Plan later in the year.

KEYNSHAM FILM WORKS Keynsham Film Works is now running its eleventh season. Audiences have grown since the move last year to the new Keynsham Community Space in Market Walk. Our audience is pleased with the raked seating which is such an advantage when we screen foreign subtitled films. The volunteers also welcome the fact that most of the equipment is built in and we no longer have to struggle setting up the screen and projector! Our programme this year is as usual very varied. Our first film was the Theory of Everything. We will be showing some similar main stream films which people may have missed at the multiplexes. These include Selma, the story of Martin Luther King’s campaign for equal rights and Testament of Youth, the powerful coming of age memoir by Vera Brittain. However we want to give Keynsham residents the chance also to see some of the

best of world cinema that would not normally be available locally. These will include the Italian social drama Human Capital, the French murder drama Elle L’Adore and the Polish Oscar winner Ida. One of our films X + Y about a young prodigy in a maths competition has links to real events involving team led by a professor at the University of Bath. We welcome new members and hope to provide a welcoming atmosphere to all ages. There is a bar before each screening giving an opportunity to meet people over a drink. Members can see all ten films in the season for a bargain subscription of only £30. However we also welcome non-members who can see each film for £5. Our screenings take place on the first Thursday of the month and leaflets showing the programme are widely available around Keynsham. To join simply come along to one of the screenings. The bar and ticket sales are open from 7:15 p.m. with the film starting at 7:45 after a short introduction by our Chairman.

SING AND SMILE WITH GOLDIES The Goldies sing and smile charity is expanding in Keynsham. An additional daytime singing and activity session is being launched at The Key Centre on Charlton Road.
“Come along and join us on 25th September at The Key Centre for a sing along to all your favourite hits and bring a friend. We only ask for a minimum contribution of just £1.”
Goldies organises fun daytime singing sessions for older people across southern England and Wales. It was started by music man, Grenville Jones, in Bath 7 years with just four sessions. Over 10,000 have taken place since then and there are now almost 100 regular sessions all led by enthusiastic Session Leaders. Whilst Grenville is well known as a choir leader, he is always quick to point out that Goldies is NOT a choir. At the sessions people sing and stretch to the memory-evoking hits of the 50s and onwards, a proven and very popular way to now brighten the lives of thousands over older people across Southern England and Wales The popular Goldies singing sessions are starting in Keynsham on Friday 25th September. Goldies will take place at the The Key Centre on Charlton Road and will be run by Session Leader, Jacqui Cook. The session will run from 2pm-3pm and take place regularly on the last Friday of each month, everyone is welcome. This session is in addition to an already popular session at The Hawthorns Community Room on Carpenters Lane which takes place on the second Friday of every month from 10.30am11.30am. Grenville Jones, Goldies founder said: “People call us the sing and smile charity and we know that for many older people, attending their Goldies session is one of the few times that they are with others. This year the organisation has gone from strength to strength, with well supported train trips to Bradford-on-Avon and Bristol, and themed, short and longer walks around Keynsham. We are continuing in this vain, with us linking up with the Saltford and Keynsham Local History Society, who are celebrating 50 years existence, with a three mile guided historic walk around the town. We are starting at the recently unveiled clock tower at 11.30 on Sunday 20th September for this two hour walk. This is open to anyone, as no membership is required. A circular walk to Hanham, and a walk along the two tunnels route in Bath is lined up for October and November. St Keyna Townswomens Guild meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the Fear Hall, Keynsham between 9.45 and 11.45 am. They are a friendly, outgoing group of ladies who enjoy interesting speakers and numerous sub-group outings and activities. I have worked for 12 years on various golf courses - the Kendleshire, the Players, Saltford and Filton and ran my own Landscaping Business for 10 years. Q: What do you enjoy most about your work with the Town Council? A: I love working outdoors and have found the team spirit of the whole of the Council staff to be a real bonus. Q: Away from work what are your hobbies/ interests? A: Spending time with my family, including our new arrival who came on 30th July, playing golf and watching football. Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A: Without doubt the Memorial Park is the biggest asset. A great place to take the children. Q. What do you feel the future holds for Keynsham? A: Hopefully, with the building of a lot of new houses, new/larger play areas and better amenities will follow, perhaps with greater control by the Town Council rather than the Unitary Authority.

KEYNSHAM FOOD FESTIVAL 11twelve marketing & event management are delighted to announce this year’s Keynsham Food Festival. The team from Keynsham-based 11twelve are organising the festival to celebrate the enormous variety of great food and drink available in and around the town. The festival takes place on Saturday 3rd October, 2015 at the Scouts Headquarters, Ashton Way, Keynsham from 9am – 3pm. The event is being sponsored by Grounded, Kitco, The New Inn, Tesco & Waitrose and in addition, the festival has secured a great line-up of local food and drink exhibitors. The
full line-up will be revealed soon but visitors will be treated to a packed programme from live cookery demonstrations and tastings to exclusive offers, apple pressings and much more. A truly family day out, the Keynsham Food Festival will also have a children’s area with a bouncy castle and face painting. Entry is free and it’s set to be a fantastic day out.
