he calendar tells us that Spring has arrived – let’s hope the weather gets to hear the news as well! However, despite enduring the wind and rain of winter, we have been able to experience some rays of metaphorical sunshine from events taking place around town. A pop-up art and craft centre ‘Art Space’ in the Civic Centre was established for the month of December. Around 2500 people visited overall, a third of whom came from outside Keynsham. Art and a variety of crafts from jewellery to pottery, all produced by local artists, were exhibited, gaining a warm public response. Many visitors made a return visit, spending more time (and money) in our town centre. This project, supported by the Town Council, BANES and the Arts Trail demonstrated the power and vitality that such an enterprise can offer a local environment. The work of Keynsham Arts consortium in bringing diverse performances to ‘The Space’ in the Civic Centre has also encouraged the emergence of Keynsham as a cultural hub. To assist with this and to encourage greater use of ‘The Space’ (above the library in the Civic Centre) we have managed to negotiate a 25% discount on bookings on a Sunday from 1st March for the rest of this year (see details further in this newsletter). With many more places to eat, drink and be entertained in the evening, Keynsham can really offer a ‘good night out. Cheers!

B&NES CHAIRMAN’S
COMMUNITY AWARDS T
he Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Community Award winners were announced on the 4th February at a celebration event in the Banqueting Room in the Guildhall. The event highlighted some previous Award winners, Adrian Inker and Matt Humberstone in a film about their volunteering work. The Chairman honoured a local man who sadly passed away last year, Peter Duppa Miller, who had dedicated his life to the community and has renamed the Lifetime Achievement Awards in his honour. New to this year’s awards was the Carer of the Year Award. Sirona Care and Health partnered with the Council to help highlight the important roles that carers undertake on a daily basis, providing support for their family and friends.

They have installed a series of “Womble Watch Area” signs in places where they regularly carry out their litter picks. The signs aim to educate people about their project and create a sense of community pride. Keynsham Town Council, who nominated the team, said “The Wombles are a voluntary group of positive people who work tirelessly for the good of Keynsham. They believe that removing litter from the streets has a positive impact and reduces crime such as vandalism”.
Winner of the Neighbourhood Team of the Year were Keynsham Wombles. Keynsham Wombles are a group of local people who regularly help to keep areas of Keynsham litter free. They also organise large litter picks, “The Big Womble” in specific places or problem areas once or twice a

GOLDEN OLDIES

rom small beginnings, registered charity Golden-Oldies has exciting plans for 2016 which include the opening of its first Goldies Charity Shop in Keynsham later in March. The Goldies Shop with an authentic juke box in the window is on the Bath Hill roundabout. Formerly a greengrocers, Goldies founder Grenville Jones says, “Forget sprouts & spuds it will soon be Songs & Smiles!” Years of conducting choirs by Bath-based music man Grenville Jones illustrated to him how the joy of singing and belonging to a group had huge social advantages. Eight years ago in January 2008 Grenville started four daytime fun singing sessions for older people in Bath and Bristol and one was in Keynsham. Now that session location number will soon reach 150. Golden sessions bring fun singing and activity that give older people a REASON to get out, to be with others and, most importantly, to sing and to smile to the popular memory evoking tunes of the 50s onwards. There will be regular sessions taking place in the Goldies Shop.

SCOOP 5 STAR AWARD M
embers of Keynsham in Bloom recently travelled down to University of Exeter to collect a 5 star Pride in Parks award at the RHS South West in Bloom Spring Seminar. The event saw 40 parks throughout the South West Region, receiving the awards as part of the Pride in Parks Initiative. The awards scheme was piloted in conjunction with the RHS and South West in Bloom in 2014 and is now being rolled out across the UK. The park was one of 27 parks who achieved the 5 star status out of the 40 who entered, including the famous Gyllyngdune

Gardens in Falmouth and Connaught Gardens in Sidmouth. Alexandra Park in Bath was the only other park in Bath & North East Somerset to enter the awards, and received a 4 star rating. It is a similar scheme to the Green Flag initiative, but the key focus being on community use. Park groups across the South West were invited to enter the award scheme, judges looked at a number of aspects including how it is used by the local community, as well as maintenance, development and environment, with the main focus being on communities. Jon Wheatley chair of RHS South West and RHS judge met with over 12 community groups who regularly use the park, during his two hour tour. He praised both the community groups and also the parks maintenance team for the works being carried out throughout the park. “It was a pleasure to meet with the groups, it is evident that this is a well-loved and much used community green space. Keynsham should be very proud of having access to such a wonderful park, it is a great asset not only for the residents of Keynsham, but also to visitors to the town, it is clear the park plays an important role in the local community”. Denise James – Chair of Keynsham in Bloom said “This is a wonderful achievement both for Keynsham and for B&NES. Keynsham is fortunate to have such a great park, which is well used by the local community and is clearly one of the best parks outside of Bath. We will be looking forward to entering the park for the 2016 Pride in Parks awards, as well as showcasing our park to the South West in Bloom judges, when Keynsham is being judged as part of the Britain in Bloom awards”.

KEYNSHAMNOW AWARD NOMINATION After only being in existence for a little more than a year KeynshamNow, the Youth Council for Keynsham, have been nominated for the Bath Pride Award in the Young People of the Year Category. We have no idea who nominated us. The result will be announced on April 16th at a rather posh do at Bath Racecourse. We also had an anonymous donation of £40.00 to support our work. Maybe, there is a link there. Who knows? At our recent meeting on March 2nd in The Space, we discussed the forthcoming Mayor for B&NES referendum, most were generally against and the Euro Referendum in June. Opinions were more divided with most saying they didn’t fully understand the issues sufficiently to be able to form a firm opinion. There was, however, a unanimous view all 16 and 17 years olds should be allowed to vote as they did in the Scottish Independence Referendum, clearly, the decision will affect the KeynshamNow age group more than any other.

group of KeynshamNow members who went to St Keyna Primary School to discuss their bullying procedures. The group were generally impressed with the way the staff at St Keyna dealt with antisocial behaviour, particularly the ex-pupils present, and Mrs Morris and some of her pupils will be present at the May meeting. The second report was from the UNICEF Child Centred City event which was to seek opinions as to how Bath could achieve Child Centred City status. The KeynshamNow members didn’t feel that the focus was right for the event and some claimed to be a little bored by it, important though child safety is. KeynshamNow welcomes observers between the ages of 13 and 20 to participate in our meetings though only KeynshamNow members can vote. The next meeting of KeynshamNow is in The Space on April 6th starting at 5.30pm.

Andy Wait, lead mentor of KeynshamNow wants the Chair, Millie Gregg, to be on the Euro Debate panel for the proposed Euro Elections Debate, organised by the Council of Churches. The main item on the agenda was a discussion led by Jayne Lewis, temporary youth worker at TimeOut, around issues to do with mental health and in particular the link between mental health and drug taking. The session was very informative with some members being prepared to talk of their own experiences of stress, anxiety and depression. The young people had a mixed view of the NHS Mental Health services but most felt the schools were a little out of their depth when dealing with children suffering from mental illness. Another problem was the ten week wait for CAMHS which some had experienced. We received two reports back on other activities involving our members. The first was from a
Keynsham & District Mencap Society Providing social and leisure opportunities for children and adults with learning disabilities. Weekly social clubs, sports and fitness, special events, day trips, residential trips and holidays.

KEYNSHAM MUSIC FESTIVAL an excited Keynsham resident phoned W hen the Keynsham Community Radio recently to ask if they had really heard the band Albany Down from London being played and were they actually coming to Keynsham we had to think very seriously about their application! Once again the mail box has been overflowing with performers from all over the place and providing enough music potential for three Festivals, even though we now have the Saturday and midweek events to offer too. The ArtSpace, successful in every way last December will return to Keynsham for the Festival. St Monica Trust who are “sponsoring” this installation at the Music Festival are particularly interested in fostering relationships with local artists, with a view to future possibilities for working together with their new art facilities in the new Somerdale premises. This includes studio space, art lessons for residents and art therapy sessions etc etc. They are very enthusiastic about the potential and this is an exciting development for local artists. St Monica’s will have their own stand inside the ArtSpace and will be well placed for introductions and meeting local artists. On Friday night Keynsham Choir Festival returns this year after its great success two years ago – and the question we are all asking, is one of Grenville Jones’ new Keynsham initiatives going to be joining ChoirJam et al ? Booked for the Festival Friday evening’s Keynsham Action Network (Live Simply) event this year are two powerful speakers – and for the first time they are both female!
Eve Poole, formerly a theologian, and author of the highly influential “Capitalism’s Toxic Assumptions - Redefining Next Generation Economics” offers alternative views for a healthier system. Market Capitalism depends on seven big ideas: competition, the ‘invisible hand’, utility, agency theory, pricing, shareholder value, and limited liability. These served the world well in the past, but over the years they have become cancerous, and are slowly killing the system as a whole. Writer and well know film-maker Kate Rawles, (buzz words: clarity, passion and change) is an exponent of the concept Outdoor Philosophy combing careful, critical thinking about the environment and our impact on it, with the emotional engagement necessary for change. In 2006, ‘outdoor philosopher’ Kate, cycled 4553 miles from Texas to Alaska, following the spine of the Rocky Mountains as closely as possible. Her story of this trip became an award winning book: ‘Kate Rawles sets out to discover about global warming the hard way.’ Michael Palin. Eve is a clever and thought provoking first rate speaker; Kate is wacky, active and inspiring. This should be a first rate evening for all those interested in life-style and our future. Meanwhile the funding for this summer looks good with no cuts from either Keynsham Town Council or B&NES, generous support pledged again by Taylor Wimpey and a warm welcome to the Keynsham Community for The St. Monica Trust, currently developing the old Fry’s factory site and exploring ways to support the Festival, both this year and in partnership with Keynsham Arts interests in the future.

They have to be seen to be believed before their growing fame takes them away from the area. The Memorial Park, which is the start point of many of the walks, is situated between the High Street and the River Chew, and very popular with families, and venue for Brass Band concerts during the Summer, and the famous Keynsham Music Festival.

GREAT BRITISH FISH & CHIP SUPPER
FRIDAY 20 MAY to eat Fish and Chips, while raising W ant money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 20th May 2016 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre. SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 8 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also
give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA. Just £50 could contribute towards the support from our Peer Support Service for one hour, in a district general hospital or Major Trauma Centre. In 2016 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,000 from the suppers. The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs,

Electrification Work As part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, Network Rail is taking another significant step towards electrification of the Great Western Mainline Spring April between 2nd April and 10th April 2016. MEET THE TEAM JAMES HIPSHON
Position: Assistant Support Youth Worker Service: TimeOut, Keynsham Youth Service Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. No, I’m from London but I moved to Bath for my degree, and now I live in North Somerset. I’d never rule out living in Keynsham though as it’s a great place to live and work. Q. What is your experience as an Youth Worker? A. My experience has been amazing. I joined the Youth Service as a volunteer in March 2015 and all the staff were so welcoming and supportive I was hooked from the start. One month later and I was a full member of the team and I knew it was the right place for me because of all the new friends I had made, and because I was being given the opportunity to get creative and have a real impact on the service. Over the summer I was involved with an incredible programme which included the allotment project, trips to Longleat Safari Park and Cheddar Gorge, and new activities like kayaking, stenciling and foraging. The team has had a few challenges and lost some core members due to family commitments, but we’ve always supported each other, embraced new people and made sure we are putting our members first, and that has seen us through those times. Q: What do you enjoy about your work with the Keynsham Youth Service? A: Everything! I’ve just started my Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice which is awesome and it’s going to help me to become a better youth worker. We have an amazing team of paid staff and volunteers and this means we can offer more to our members as they all bring their own energy, skill set and creativity to the
programme. My favourite activities at TimeOut are the cooking sessions which I prepare and supervise, our current focus is on nutritious and delicious meals and we also try to tie in with the food calendar of national and international events. It’s been very successful so far. I created a running club which has been surprisingly popular and very fun, and I look forward to some warmer, dryer, lighter evenings so we can continue with that. I’m excited about our plans for the future, for our members and for the community. Q: What are your hobbies/interests? A: I’m a keen runner, currently training for the Bath Half Marathon this month, and hoping to raise £250 for Off The Record, the young people’s charity in BANES. Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A: Most of all it’s the people who make it so great. Also the fact that there is a dynamic, diverse, growing youth service which has achieved a lot in the last year, and I’m proud to be a part of it. The other best things are the Memorial Park and the Skate Park, and the proximity to Bristol and Bath. The future in Keynsham is exciting as we are moving to a new, state-of-the-art youth centre opposite the Park in Bath Hill and will be getting some new equipment too. There is a strong sense of community in Keynsham and new partnerships are always being forged, I look forward to seeing how this bright new future develops and feel lucky to be a part of it all.
