THINGS TO DO
27
Our new centre moves forward as occupancy increases and the whole programme with roads, timeline and clock will be completed by the summer – you won’t be disappointed! Already residents are enjoying the new library, mosaics and one stop facility while being very impressed with the meeting facility of the community space. After the fire station moves to Hicks Gate we look forward to the completion of the new HQ for Avon Fire & Rescue and welcoming their staff to our town.

Spring.
On Somerdale with the development of houses the new Fry Club takes shape and the old factory should soon experience new life and again offer employment opportunities to the town. Nearby the Friends of Keynsham Station are working to enhance this growing transport location as we await rail electrification in the next several years. Our Memorial Park has witnessed tremendous popular success including the most successful Music Festival ever with a week-long series of well attended events leading up to the main Sunday celebration. This acclaimed Festival driven by volunteers and supported by the Council relies on your donations to continue its quality of delivery. I’m also pleased to confirm that given the great success of our Park bandstand events these will be extended through the coming summer by popular demand. In addition B&NES Council have just announced a major improvement to access and signage with a dedicated adult keep fit facility.
Kindest regards
Cllr Clive Fricker Chairman Keynsham Town Council

PARISH PLAYERS K
eynsham Parish Players is a lively, active, friendly group who once a year put on a show at Keynsham Parish Hall. This year their production is called ‘Time Pieces’ which takes a journey through the 20th Century featuring songs and sketches representing each decade. Starting with turn of the century music hall, moving through the two World Wars and the intervening period, on to the rock ‘n’ roll 50s, hippy 60s, glam rock and big hair to a finish covering the 1990s, there will be much loved and familiar tunes for the audience to sing
along with and memorable items from early radio and TV. During preparation for their shows the group meet for rehearsals in the Parish Hall on Sunday afternoons and often during the week for additional practice. They specialise in home-grown productions and having fun! Every other year is an original pantomime production and ‘in between’ years they work on a variety of other show styles. Last year it was a very successful version of ‘Babes in the Wood’; other pantomimes in the past have included ‘Aladdin’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Dick Whittington’, and ‘Treasure Island’. Musical Director is Owen Cole who has been directing shows for many years. The producer is Sue Sprague who has been involved with the Players since the first performance in 1996 and has produced most of the shows since 2001. Sue said “We particularly wanted remember the Great War following last year’s commemoration of its start in 1914 and this show gives us an opportunity to honour that memory alongside some more light-hearted and fun periods.”

It was agreed to meet every Saturday, from 10:30 – 12:30 and there will be an array of various arts and crafts to choose from such as Painting, Quilting, Card Making, Knitting, Sewing etc. On the 23rd April from 5-9pm we will be taking part in the launch of The World Book Night, we are lucky to have been selected from thousands of community groups and have been given a number of books to give out to local residents, the idea being to encourage people to read books. FARMERS MARKET BACK AT CIVIC CENTRE Keynsham Farmers’ Market returned to the Civic Centre, on the new Market Walk, in January. This is where the market operated from before redevelopment began in 2012; during the redevelopment period it has been running from Ashton Way car park. Councillor David Bellotti said: “I’m delighted that the market is returning to its original location but in a much improved new public space, Market Walk, which has been specifically designed for local events and activities. The monthly Farmers’ Market, which recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary, is an important event for the town.
9
“Bath & North East Somerset Council worked with Somerset Farmers’ Market to ensure it maintained a presence in the town during the redevelopment of Keynsham, and to ensure a smooth transition back to the Civic Centre. “ The market, which runs on the second Saturday of each month is very popular and well supported with a variety of traders. Louise Hall, Market Manager for Somerset Farmers’ Market said: “’Keynsham Farmers’ Market members are very excited at the prospect of returning to the centre of town in January and taking centre stage in the new Market Walk location.’’ You can find out more about the market at www.somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk/markets/ keynsham.

BATH INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 2015 J
ess Vincent to launch new album in Keynsham as part of Bath Music Festival.
The Bath International Music Festival is coming to Keynsham as Jess Vincent launches her exciting third album ‘Shine’ with her brilliant Trio Reg Meuross and Marcel Rose, plus percussionist Graham Brown in a special event at Keynsham Community Space on Friday, 22nd May (doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start). Jess is a singer/songwriter from Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire and the owner of a highly distinctive and mature voice and song writing talent. Often compared to Kate Bush, and Iris Dement, she has two previous albums (‘Timeframe’ and ‘Seesaw Dreams’) and has been actively gigging and promoting these across the UK. Playing guitar, Uke and Shruti Box Jess, along with her Trio, will perform as part of the Bath Music Festivals’ growing reach into more local areas. ‘Shine’ is a collection of brand new songs exploring the theme of light, shade and survival through the lives of a lively set of characters. Alongside ‘Billy Tipton’s Waltz’ and the ghostly tale ‘New Amsterdam’ (about actress Olive Thomas), Jess’s ‘magical voice and exceptional and truly innovative songwriting talent’ [Reg Meuross] also brings us some more personal revelations: ‘Wrong Shade of Blue’ and country style heartbreak ‘Shackles and Chains’. “Soulful, strong and utterly engrossing” [Mick Tems, Folk Wales]. This is a gig not to be missed. For more information on Jess, please visit her website at www.jessvincentsings.com Tickets will be available through Bath Box Office at http://bathboxoffice.org.uk/ or over the phone on 01225 463362.

SOMERDALE RAMBLERS omerdale Ramblers were formed in 1996. At that time many of the members were employees of the Cadbury chocolate factory, sadly no more. Our membership now is made up of retired Cadbury employees and many others who have joined over the 18 years of our existence. Walks are organised four weekly on Sundays, usually within a twenty mile radius of Bristol or Bath. They are led by a member of the section who would have recently completed the walk and therefore have a good knowledge of the area and any hazards that might exist.
Walk lengths vary but are usually between six and eight miles and nearly always starting and ending near a pub where a meal can be booked in advance for those who wish to eat. Lunch is not obligatory for walkers but we find that it adds to the camaraderie within the group Twice a year in spring and autumn a longer walk will be arranged for those who enjoy a full day out (usually 9 to 10 miles). From time to time short breaks are organized at home and abroad for those who would like to participate. This year for example we have organized a walking weekend in Cornwall. The dates for walks are agreed twelve months in advance and the actual walk area is set three to four weeks in advance and notified individually to members. Prospective new members are usually invited to
All members are asked to have proper walking kit including walking boots and protective clothing. We very rarely cancel walks because of the weather, We are recognized as a very open and friendly club and many of our members have been with us from the start. A WI IN KEYNSHAM 2
015 is a year of celebration for the WI. It is the centenary of the founding of the first WI in England and Wales, and the fortieth anniversary of the formation of the Avon Federation of Women’s Institutes. There are plenty of local and national events for members to get involved with. As part of these celebrations, it has been decided to try to form a new WI in Keynsham. The benefits of belonging to the WI: • Learn new craft skills or develop existing ones If you would like to learn a new craft or benefit from the expertise of other members WI provides the opportunity to do so. Developing your own creativity can be very rewarding and at the same time helps to keep traditional skills alive. It’s also a great opportunity to socialise with others and to discuss issues that affect women in an informal context. • Get involved in issues of concern to you and your community WI campaigns are about changing things for the better and tackling the issues that matter to members. Members are at the heart of the WI and they play a central role in bringing issues onto the WI’s national agenda through our public affairs and campaigning. From equal pay to climate change, from gaps in the midwifery workforce to the plight of the honey bee, WI members have embraced a diverse set of challenges and built a reputation for the WI as a practical and ambitious organisation that doesn’t shy away from tricky issues.
• Increase your knowledge Members have the opportunity to learn about a wide range of subjects: astronomy, earthquakes, writing, photography, drama, dancing, circus skills and dragon boat racing - or anything else that you can imagine. This may either be in your local WI or offered by the Avon Federation. Members may also go to Denman College, the WI’s own educational centre where there are numerous courses. The WI is a place where you can make new friends and have fun. If you are interested in a WI in Keynsham, please contact: keynshamwi@gmail.com or phone 01761 436253.

ENERGY GROUP T
ransition Keynsham’s energy group has been working on plans for some time now to set up our very own Community Energy company called Keynsham Community Energy (KCE). Alastair Singleton, Sam Willitts and Mark Penny have agreed to be directors of the new company, which will be a Community Benefit Society (known as a Bencom). Transition Keynsham are now working towards legal status for KCE, with a view to applying for a significant grant that will allow us to conduct feasibility studies for community energy projects. They are also working on a short and medium term business plan.
C AR E TH
KCE be looking for more people to get involved over the coming months, in terms of time, expertise and capital. In the first instance they will be seeking a small amount of seed funding for legal set up costs. Until they are a legal entity they will be unable to apply for funding to get started on the exciting projects they’ve got planned for Keynsham! KCE are looking to raise £500 initially which will cover the costs of registering as a legal entity. To donate, no matter how large or small or just to find out more about the plans please get in contact with Mark Penny at markpenny011@gmail.com

THE REAL VALUE OF
KEYNSHAM MUSIC FESTIVAL Music Festival’s directors and K eynsham B&NES Arts Development are delighted at
the results of the survey of the Festival’s economic impact in the community carried out by the Audience Agency last summer. The Audience Agency, employed nationwide to evaluate arts funding and spending for the Arts Council and local authorities, calculated that the economic activity generated in Keynsham by the Festival amounted to £462,120.00. This indicates a return of 8 to 1 to the community on the £60,000 cost of mounting the Festival – a return ratio deemed excellent by any Arts economic reckoning. Money brought into Keynsham and spent in local businesses on the Festival Sunday, that would not have otherwise come into Keynsham, was calculated as £42,721.00. These figures compare very favourably with other UK festivals and will hopefully contribute an increased local support of the Festival by funders and businesses. The full report will be made available on the Festival website, or on request.

FESTIVAL 2015 Meanwhile plans for this summer’s Festival, 29th June – 5th July, are advancing and will be aiming to take full advantage of new developments in Keynsham. Events can be expected during the Festival week that will focus on Market Walk open spaces and The Space in the Civic Centre. Also very much on the drawing board are plans to make use of the Festival facilities for the whole Saturday in the Park – looking to maximise use of structures and offer opportunities for some of the musicians that have to be refused on the Sunday.
KEYNSHAM NEWS
Plans are currently focusing on a folk dance and music event, with a German dance troupe from Berlin already booked, and a Keynsham classic and vintage vehicle display. As well as the usual evening Gala concert.

The Opera in the Park should feature tenor male voices for the first time and hopefully the Monday night Festival opening will grow after last year’s successful experiment. Plans for the Sunday stage line-ups are well advanced and promise to match the strength of last year’s music – with some familiar faces and a few surprises too. The strength of local and national original music is becoming more and more impressive – as is the enthusiasm and receptiveness of our local audience! Look out for more in the modern jazz area and contemporary dance. The Festival’s reputation continues to grow – not least among the musicians themselves among the comments last year was the manager of Australian band Bela Takes Chase who said that Keynsham was their fourth Festival of the weekend, and was both the best organised and the best hosted. That’s a massive thanks to the volunteers! The state of potential funding and sponsorship for this summer’s Festival is looking good at this point in time, with new Keynsham businesses such as Grounded and Loungers expressing a wish to be involved together with the construction companies currently working in Keynsham. But there is always room for more to join our regular supporters I J McGill Transport and Waitrose. The Festival continues to offer platforms for all kinds of local groups and is particularly involved this year with Keynsham Action Network and the Butterflies Voice project. Organisers are particularly keen to increase the number of community groups taking part in The Park on Sunday and is looking at ways to make the logistics of this easier. Above all Keynsham Music Festival is about the total involvement of the community and all enquires, suggestions and offers of help and volunteering should be made to info@
Bela, of Australian band Bela Takes Chase, at the Festival last summer.

MEET THE TEAM MARIE ALLEN
Position Administrative Assistant Service with Keynsham Town Council: 16 years Q. What’s your work experience? A. Prior to my job with Keynsham Town Council I worked in the newspaper world where I gained my experience in desktop publishing which gave me the knowledge for a large part of what I do at the Town Council. Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. I have lived in Keynsham for 26 years and have seen a few changes in that time such as; demolition of the old cinema, a new clinic in place of the old hospital, hundreds of new houses, the end of Cadburys factory, the establishment of Manor Road Community Woodland and Abbots Wood and the regeneration project in the Town Centre. Q: What is your experience as an Admin Assistant? A: My job encompasses duties outside of admin work such as computer graphics, display work and involvement with local events such as Keynsham Music Festival, Keynsham In Bloom and Keynsham Winter Festival. With all this diversity I enjoy, and have never tired of my job here at the Council. Q: Away from work what are your hobbies/ interests? A: I have an allotment in Keynsham which satisfies my interest in gardening and at the same time gives me the chance to get some well needed exercise. During the summer a lot of time is spent harvesting fruit and veg and it takes as much time to make use of them as it does to grow them! My other interest is dog grooming.
Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A: I like the fact access to the countryside is just a few minutes’ drive away and we also have the advantage of a lovely park in the centre of town where events are held throughout the Summer. Keynsham has a great community spirit and a lot of local groups, sporting facilities, restaurants and more, making it a good place to live.

PHOTO SHOOT A
rtist Sebastien Boyesen, who is putting the finishing touches to the design of the new Keynsham Clock Tower has been working with local youngsters to recreate two iconic Frys Chocolate bar wrappers, following a suggestion made at the consultation workshop sessions held in the Autumn. The Arts Advisory Group put out a call for volunteers in a bid to recreate the ‘Five Boys’ and ‘Five Girls’ chocolate bar wrappers associated with Keynsham. Twelve children responded. With the generous assistance of the National Fashion Museum Bath, the girls were able to be photographed in Victorian dress while the boys were dressed in ‘sailor-boy’ tops – as in the original advertisement. Samples of the resulting images are shown above. Any child not included in the final frames will become part of another ‘collage’ involving members from TimeOut youth club so their faces will still be captured for posterity as well! glazed references which will grace the Clock Tower capturing Keynsham past and present. Artist Sebastien said “The sessions with the young people in Keynsham were fantastic. I think they really started to appreciate the fact that their images would be captured forever in the Clock Tower - meaning that when they were much older, they could always come back to Keynsham and show their own kids themselves as young children. They were tremendously excited by this sense of permanence and history. “ The granite plinth should be installed during April with the final unveiling of the Clock Tower taking place on Saturday 6th June.
