elcome to the first Keynsham News of a new decade. It is always good to reflect when there is a new beginning, to look back and also focus on what we hope the future will bring. In this edition we will be looking back on 750 years of our beloved Parish Church of St John’s. If only those stones could talk, what tales they could tell. The Church in Keynsham was built towards the end of the reign of Henry 3rd who reigned for 56 years and ascended the throne at the age of 9 after the death of his father King John. Hard to imagine that that plot of land at the end of the High Street has had the same function for all this time. In this edition, you will find the list of celebration plans for this wonderful anniversary. So to the present, congratulations to all those involved in the superb achievement of launching our own Keynsham Community Radio, KTCRfm broadcasting on 105.8fm. It is still very early days but what an impressive way to start a new decade by keeping our community up to date, entertained and informed. Well done to all involved, there were many who said that this dream would never happen, how wrong they were. Also, well done to KeynshamNow for their Santa Cycle that raised a magnificent £500.00 for CLIC Sargent. Looking forward, we have to consider the delicate state of our world, the coronavirus threat and the dangers of Global Warming. Our declared Climate Emergency means that we are working to reduce our carbon footprint at all costs. That is why we objected to the expansion of Bristol Airport. The vote to reject the current planning application is, I’m sure, a victory won but sadly not the war. The new budget for 2020/21 has shown an increase in the grants the Town Council awards to community groups from a total of £20,000.00 to £30,000.00. The extra £10,000.00 will be awarded to community groups that have projects which will support our Climate Emergency crisis. Only by working together, will we defeat these 2 threats to our continuing wellbeing.

Climate Emergency & Environmental Showcase Saturday 14th March 2020 | 10:00am – 2:00pm The Space (above Keynsham Library)
I
n response to the Climate Emergency that has been declared by Keynsham Town Council, the Keynsham Environment & Climate Showcase has been organised to inform residents of what type of steps (however small) they can take to help protect the environment. There will be a wide variety of exhibitors, including local organisations, covering lots of different aspects of the climate crisis and suggesting practical ways in which residents can make a difference on a local and global level; from active travel and money-saving energy tips to shopping local and creating better habitats for native wildlife. As part of the event, the Keynsham Repair Café will be running their monthly repair session in The Space; if you have a broken kettle, toy, bike, electric keyboard, doll, lamp, radio, speakers, phone or anything else you can think of, then you should definitely bring it along just to see the ‘Fixers’ at work. Entry to the event is FREE and anyone who would

HELP DECIDE FUTURE LOCAL TRANSPORT PROVISION Getting around Keynsham

020 is going to be the year that gives Keynsham residents opportunities to have their say on what type of local transport provision they want to see in Keynsham going forward. Whether its cycling, bus, train or Shank’s pony, with the declared Climate Emergency and the ever-increasing traffic congestion in and around Keynsham, it is important to ensure practicable and popular alternatives are provided to replace local car journeys to ensure future sustainability. This time last year, the Town Council held a public meeting for residents to consider their responses to the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) Joint Local Transport Plan (JLTP4). “The Draft Joint Local Transport Plan 4 gives no provision for connectivity between services e.g. small local buses taking passengers to the local railway station and transport hubs. There is a need for expansion of the Metrobus network. Bus services need to be incorporated as part of the local public realm to ensure that they are run profitably and are not ceased when subsidies come to an end. All transport improvements should be sustainable.” Keynsham Town Council March 2019 WECA has now launched consultations on their Bus Service Strategy and Local Cycling and Walking Plan (LCWP) for the region. The consultation period is open to responses from all residents from 3rd February to 15th March 2020.
At the time of going to press, the Town Council has decided to hold a public meeting with invited speakers for residents to discuss the implications of these two new consultations on Monday 2nd March in The Space at 7pm. Further details will be advertised on the website and social media once speakers have been confirmed. The WECA bus strategy outlines how the Combined Authority’s ambition of doubling bus passenger numbers by 2036 can be achieved by improving the network, doubling frequency on some routes and creating better, faster, more reliable and more accessible services across the West of England. The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan outlines £400m of infrastructure projects that could dramatically improve cycling and walking across the region and help to make active travel the preferred choice for shorter trips. A Local Cycling and Walking infrastructure plan is a first step to WECA identifying and securing future funding to make these projects a reality. As well as the current WECA consultation in respect of local transport, Keynsham Neighbourhood Development Plan and the Town Council will be starting a major piece of work in late spring addressing how people move in and around Keynsham both now and how they want to do so in the future. The survey will be asking

both residents and commuters what type of transport options and improvements they would like to see in the future to reduce the number of car journeys to/from and through Keynsham Town Centre, including connectivity to the railway station, Park and Rides and the through buses to Bristol and Bath. This work will provide evidence to underpin the planning policies included in the Neighbourhood Development Plan and also the option currently being researched by the Town Council of providing a local circular community bus service around Keynsham.
Keynsham Business Directory
T
he final touches are being put to the Keynsham Business Directory and it will be sent out to all households in the last week of March. Aware of the economic and social benefits of a strong, business community, Keynsham Town Council agreed a policy to support businesses within the Keynsham postal area. Consequently, in 2018, the Keynsham Business Forum was launched to provide an opportunity for the local business community to network, exchange ideas and achieve its objectives. Keynsham is full of fantastic small, medium and large businesses and the Council intends that the Keynsham Business Directory will become a point of reference; promoting local business and allowing residents, visitors and more distant potential customers to see what our town can deliver.
This is the first step towards moving the Directory to an on-line resource which will be kept updated to take account of arrivals and departures. As the environment becomes an increasingly important factor in the way we live, accessing products and services locally can assist in the wellbeing of residents in our town and the planet beyond. It’s not too late to be included in our on-line Directory and you don’t have to have a shop in the High Street. Anyone offering products or services can be included –so whether its selling crafts, offering consultancy or wellbeing therapies, the Council is anxious to hear from you. he Annual Town meeting affords Keynsham residents a chance to have their say on the issues affecting Keynsham, hear about the projects the Town Council has been working on over the last year and what plans there are for the future. There will be a Guest Speaker (TBC) on a matter of topical interest and the Council will present the Annual Good Citizen Awards aimed at recognising the residents of Keynsham who provide support, services and activities that benefit the town. We are celebrating! St John’s Church is 750 years old
S
t John the Baptist Church, Keynsham is 750 years old in 2020 and we welcome everyone to come and join us as we celebrate this momentous milestone. On January 29th the year long programme of special birthday events launched with a peal of its iconic bells and A Songs of Praise service. In February, parishioners and Keynsham residents attended a Valentine’s Day Curry and Quiz Night. Events are still being planned by the committee, but the Church has planned to have at least one celebratory event in every month of 2020.
The Church is arguably the most significant historical building still standing in Keynsham and is extending an invite to everyone to: Celebrate its past, not just the building, but the people who have worshipped or been married, baptised or had a funeral within its walls. Come inside and be a part of today’s worshipping community. Consider and be a part of our vision for the future of the building and the role it has to play in the wider community.

Keynsham High Street Plans Unveiled
A
t the end of January, Bath & North East Somerset Council (B&NES) unveiled their plans for improving Keynsham High Street in a display in Keynsham Library. B&NES will be using £1.5 million of funding, secured from the West of England Combined Authority, to implement the improvements which will focus on transforming the section between Charlton Road and Bath Hill.
This work forms part of a larger, four-year project to enhance Keynsham’s Town Centre, that will aim to maintain the town’s position as a ‘successful and independent economic centre’. B&NES will be reviewing feedback from the exhibition to inform final proposals before construction begins in summer 2020.

Plant some trees in 2020 T
he Environment and Sustainability Working Party that has been set up by Keynsham Town Council to respond to its Cimate Emergency declaration are issuing a call to residents to identify places in Keynsham where trees could successfully be planted. The Town Council is supporting B&NES’ ambition to plant 100,000 trees by the council elections in May 2023. As well as supporting the Tree Planting Day in Kelston Park on Saturday 21st March as part of the Kelston Park Improvement Scheme, the Town Council is now asking residents to identify areas in Keynsham which they think could support tree planting.
The Town Council will identify whether areas are on public land or private land and if the latter, contact the landowner to see if they would be willing to support the initiative. n Friday 8th May 2020 Keynsham Community Choir ‘ChoirJam’ will be performing a very special fundraising concert at St John’s Church, as part of the 75th anniversary of VE Day when peace was declared in Europe at the end of WWII. A unique triple choir event ‘Sing for Peace’ will see Bristol Military Wives Choir, The RAF Spitfires Choir and ChoirJam, accompanied by their live band, all come together for a wonderful musical celebration of peace. Annual GRANTS AWARD K
eynsham Town Council’s Annual Grant Awards will be open to applications from 1st April. The Town Council is prepared to consider applications for financial assistance from properly constituted: (a) Clubs and societies; (b) Voluntary bodies and associations; (c) Non-profit making organisations; (d) Charitable bodies. In order to qualify for assistance, applications must demonstrate a direct benefit to the Keynsham Town area, or any part of it, or all or some of its residents. In addition, the direct benefit accruing must be commensurate with the expenditure to be incurred. Local groups that are affiliated to regional or national organisations will qualify provided the local group is required to function substantially as an independent financial unit. The primary intention of the Town Council’s grant scheme is to support new events/projects/items in the town and the maximum grant payable to any one organisation will be £1,000.
New - £10,000 for Environmental projects In addition to the £20,000 set aside each year for community grants, the Town Council is allocating a further £10,000 to support environmental projects that will have a direct benefit to the Keynsham Town area. Funding timetable and key dates in 2020. 1st April – 1st May: Application packs available. Friday 15th May: Closing date for applications. Tuesday 2nd June: Applications considered by Grants Committee.
Wednesday 3rd June: Applicants are notified of the Town Council’s decisions. Wednesday 15th July: Grants Presentation Evening (7.00 p.m. for 7.15 p.m. start) in Space (above the library) Keynsham. It is anticipated that the successful applicants or their representatives will attend. KeynshamNow Santa Cycle a Great Success K
eynshamNow joined forces with CLIC Sargent to cycle the length of the Bristol to Bath cycle path to raise as much money as possible for the charity. One member chose to run to Bath and back to Saltford instead. Between us we raised ÂŁ500.00. We were so pleased with our efforts in December that we have already pencilled in the date for the 2020 Santa Cycle. It will be November 29th 2020 starting at 11.00am from the Bird in Hand Car Park in Saltford. All are welcome to join us. There will be more information nearer the time.

Youth Service Update
K
eynsham Town Council Youth Service offers enjoyable activities to all young people across Keynsham that provide opportunities to learn new skills and meet new people. We run youth club nights, detached sessions at Community at 67 and outreach in the town centre. We recently relaunched sessions with a change in the age ranges to encourage more young people to get involved. Our Programme Open sessions Tuesday 7pm – 9:30pm Timeout Youth Centre, Bath Hill School years 6, 7 and 8 (ages 10-13) Cost: 50p Thursday 7pm – 9:30pm Timeout Youth Centre, Bath Hill School years 9, 10, 11 and Sixth Form (ages 13 – 19) Cost: 50p Cook and Chill Friday 4pm – 6:30pm Community at 67, Queens Road School years 5, 6 and 7 (ages 8 – 11) Cost: 50p Open Music Studio & Youth Café 2nd Saturday of every month 12 noon -2:30pm Cost: 50p What have we been doing? On Tuesday evenings the music studio is open; Assistant Youth Worker, Mike, has been showing young people how to record tracks. Downstairs we have cooking, arts or crafts. On Thursday evenings, our Youth Support Worker, Kelly has been teaching young people basic First Aid skills, covering CPR to burns and everything in between. On Friday’s we have Cook & Chill with Dan and Carrie; members are learning to make tasty meals and sweet treats.
What’s next? The youth team will be out supporting the skate park event on 9th May at Memorial Park. The team are busy organising events for the summer and are planning the return of the climbing wall following its popularity in previous years. Look out for more information in the summer edition of the Keynsham News. On the streets The outreach team are out on the streets on Friday evenings. With the dark nights and cold weather, youth workers have been predominantly visiting both Memorial and Kelston Parks. As the weather changes in the spring, the team will be visiting more areas and organising games. Did you know? We have a fully working recording music studio and rehearsal space, four computers, and FREE wifi. Come along and try for nothing! We have plenty of space for new members in all of our sessions and the first week is completely free. Keynsham Music Festival Preview

eynsham Music Festival 2020 will seek to build on the developments of last year with an even bigger and more varied programme. The line-up will exemplify one of the great strengths of the Festival; it offers professional infrastructure, a platform and opportunity for community activity and local performers of any age. This year’s Opera In The Park production is expected to be Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in the Top Stage Marquee on Thursday 2nd July. A story of a dare, fiancé swapping and its ramifications; a common theme in comedy from The Decameron to Shakespeare. The Friday night in the Park will see a new addition with a major Americana/Country Rock concert on the main stage plus a Tex Mex restaurant for a decent meal to go with the music! The Saturday in the Park will be expanded to provide a whole day of events and activities focused on FAMILIES. As well as the familiar folk and acoustic music day with the Keynsham Orchestra Concert there will be circus and street acts to entertain the whole family. New for this year will be a Health and Wellbeing ‘village’ within the Park, featuring a wide range of therapies and activities to try and sample. Plans are underway for a revival of Keynsham’s annual Tug Of War (not seen since the 70s) with teams from establishments and clubs around the town. Festival organisers are pleased that Wellsway School will be taking part this year in both the music and dance areas along with festival regulars, and the events youngest performers, from
Chandag Infants. The slightly older members of Community at 67’s creative fabrics group will also be contributing in 2020; they are helping with the creation of new flags and banners for the Park. The programme for Festival Week aims to provide music for every taste in venues across the town. Jazz will feature again in the Chocolate Quarter and a major new dance event is proposed for the Somerdale Pavilion; there will be a festival event to be enjoyed on every night of the week. KTCRfm Local Radio for Keynsham K
TCRfm began transmitting 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the end of January 2020. Following a sometimes frustrating, two-year preparation period, Ofcom officials cleared the technical set up for broadcast on 24th January. First reactions and reception reports were beyond expectations; listeners were able to tune in from Keynsham, Saltford, the Chew Valley and South Gloucestershire, all the way up to the M4 in the north, down to Clutton and Temple Cloud in the south, as far west as Portishead and across to Batheaston in the east. This, of course, includes

But KTCRfm will remain a local station for its heartland communities and while it cannot be a news agency for the area it will concentrate on local issues, concerns and events. The weekly ‘Keynsham Hour’, now entering its sixth year, will now be broadcast twice each week on Thursdays and Mondays at 1pm, and will be essential listening for all things happening in and around the Keynsham area. By the time this article is published the station will be broadcasting a daily staple of specialist music shows for all tastes, with local personalities, together with community programmes and celebrations of the spoken word. Since transmission began a number of interested parties have come forward with interests in advertising, programme-making and contributions. The station will also offer training in programmemaking and recording, and a number of local schools have approached the station with a view to taking advantage of these opportunities. Many local organisations and businesses have contributed enormously to the station’s establishment and KTCRfm is extremely grateful for all the support so far. KTCRfm must pay its way and will offer a significant marketing opportunity for the area and its businesses. Keynsham Walking Festival Returns ... and this year it’s FREE
T
he Keynsham Walking Festival will return in spring 2020. The event will follow its usual format with seven walks, a social evening and family friendly finale spread over the final weekend in April. Following with tradition, the festival begins with a History Walk around the town on the Friday evening. There will be three more walks on Saturday and Sunday respectively; all of varying length with something suitable for all abilities. The walks will be led by experienced leaders, who will point out places of interest along the way. In 2020, for the first time ever, the festival will be completely FREE with voluntary donations being collected at the beginning of each walk. There will be a social evening on the Saturday, and
a walk finale in the Memorial Park on the Sunday afternoon.
