W
hat a lot we have to look forward to in the summer months! It is a time when so many of our residents show extra support and effort for their town. Keynsham in Bloom Community Group, who maintain the planters in the High Street have also this year, with children from St Keyna School, assisted Community@67 to bring colour to the shopping parade at Queens Road. The Scouting groups have also done their bit – replanting the containers in Ashton Way car park - and several residents will be enhancing the attractiveness of their local neighbourhood with their beautiful garden displays. Then, of course, our Music Festival will be taking place from 27th June – July 3rd. There is a varied programme scheduled for each night of the week, with a folk/gala festival on Saturday and the ‘big day’ on Sunday. This event attracts thousands of people and their spending power to the centre of Keynsham – benefiting us all - and the Town Council is proud to continue its sponsorship of this popular family event. However, it could not take place without the dedication of countless volunteers, some of whom work throughout the year to make it happen! On a different note, June will see a further public engagement on our future leisure centre provision and the redevelopment of Riverside. By the time this newsletter has reached you, your Town Councillors and BANES officers will have met to discuss proposals and subsequently, two open meetings are being held on Thursday 9th June 6.30 – 8.30pm and on Tuesday 14th June between 2.00 – 4.00pm at the Space (above the Library) in order to seek the views of residents. Only then, will a final decision on the way forward be taken. Enjoy the Summer.

EW TIMEOUT BUILDING. The new building opened on Thursday 14th April and the IT suite including film making and editing suit will be installed shortly. The music studio has also arrived and some of the young people have been receiving training over the last two months in Riverside Studio in Bath in all aspects of the music studio. ALLOTMENT PROJECT This project is due to start in the next few weeks. It runs on a Wednesday from 4pm until 6pm. Young people will be learning how to grow food which will then be cooked as part of the food and nutrition project in TimeOut. TARGETED SUPPORT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN KEYNSHAM The youth workers at TimeOut can offer signposting to other services for young people to enable them to get the support they need. Targeted one to one support is also offered to the young people who attend TimeOut. TimeOut currently offers drop in sessions for all young people aged 13 to 19 on a Tuesday and a Thursday evening from 7pm until 9.30pm. Wednesday is project night. Young people sign up to attend the different projects on offer to them i.e. Nutritious and Delicious, Creation Station, Making and Baking. Currently the young people

DANCE YOUR BODY AWAKE Local community Dance Your Body Awake for over 60’s took to the Bandstand Stage in Keynsham Park on Friday 20th May at 1.00pm, to participate in a GLOBAL BIG DANCE PLEDGE where people all over the world danced a piece of choreography by AKRAM KHAN.

This was followed by various dance and movement routines practiced in their weekly classes held at St. Johns Church Hall, Keynsham. The oldest participant was Winifred who is 96 years old.

ollowing the success of its first month, the Keynsham pop-up Art Space shop in Temple Street will continue for another month, well into June - or until a new commercial leaseholder is found for the premises. Organiser Caroline Butcher said: “This shop, and the one back in December, surely demonstrate a need for more art work in Keynsham. The Saturday morning workshops on the street were very well supported and great fun. It was gurt lush”. Clearly there is no shortage of local artists to fill the space and support the venture.

KEYNSHAM WALKING FESTIVAL
2016 REPORT T
he weather was kind to us, with only one shower over the weekend of the first ever Keynsham Walking Festival. Over 130 people took part in the 7 walks, with which the organising group were well pleased. With 2 short themed walks covering Photography and Nature for which Andrew Wells and David Sage and members of the Avon Wildlife Trust, were our guides. The most popular was the 6 mile history walk lead by Richard Dyson and members of the Saltford and Keynsham Local History Society, which included a stop for cream teas at Queen Charlton, kindly provided by Tesco.
Saltford Walkers, Keysham Methodist Ramblers and Somerdale Ramblers, each organised their own walks as part of the festival, with their members teaming up with members of the public, visiting most of the outlying villages and local hostelries, some time during the weekend. The longest walk was an 8 mile trek to the villages of Burnett and Compton Dando The social evening in the Scout Hall on the Saturday at which Carol Thomson gave a thoroughly interesting pictorial account of her walking the Great wall of China, was well supported. Not only included in the evening was a drink on arrival, a buffet, and raffle, but a montage of photographs taken by members throughout the year on our various walks was on display The whole festival culminated in a family event at the Memorial Park, which over 200 people attended. Not only was there a treasure hunt to find animals scattered around the park, we also had a visit from the” Frozen” Princesses enthralling the audience with songs from the film, and Jimmy Mac was on hand to compere the event and make sure everyone went home happy and with a balloon sculpture

Each year the Town Council holds a grants presentation evening to present grant awards to local organisations and to provide an opportunity for the groups to meet and hear about the range of voluntary work taking place for the benefit of Keynsham residents. This year the Presentation Evening will be held on Wednesday 20th July in the Community Space, Keynsham Civic Centre, Market Walk commencing at 7.15pm.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015/2016 REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE TOWN COUNCIL COUNCILLOR LISA O’BRIEN
A
s we look forward to the warmer days of spring, it’s good to reflect on changes to our town over the last year and some of the initiatives that the Town Council is taking forward. With the Civic Centre completed, new Clock Tower in place and retail units almost all occupied, more residents are frequenting the restaurants, shops, library and community space for leisure and every day use. Temple Street has recovered some of its bounce and there are new retail outlets along the High Street. Keynsham is buzzing again, with music and other forms of culture increasingly prevalent. The pop-up Art Space project exhibiting local artists’ work in December demonstrated clearly the thirst for art and crafts in our neighbourhood. The Town Council has agreed an action plan, highlighting developments which we wish to progress or encourage others to accomplish. We intend to improve use of our own resources to promote social and leisure events in our town, work with community groups to extend communication links and cultivate improved environments for our residents. One way we are driving this forward is through the creation of a Neighbourhood Development Plan. This project aims to establish what type of environment our community wants to have in the future. For instance, how should its economic development tie in with infrastructure needs? If you are interested in becoming part of this task force,
please contact the Town Council office for more details. Your input will be very welcome. Community groups that have already made a difference are the Keynsham in Bloom group which spearheaded the work to win a South West in Bloom ‘Gold’ award last summer. They have worked so hard around the area; in the town centre, bringing colourful planters to our pavements, at the railway station, and other spots such as Manor and Queens Road communities. Another award - ‘The BANES Chairman’s Community Award for Best Neighbourhood Team of the Year’ - was justifiably awarded to the ‘Keynsham Wombles’ for the fantastic work they

do through the year, clearing up and tidying our environment. Well done to both groups! The expansion of new homes will bring additional residents coming to live in our town. They will join a thriving, welcoming community! PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT BY CHAIRMAN, COUNCILLOR CLIVE FRICKER The past year has seen a continuing stream of planning activity associated with development to the north, south and east of our town. A key priority has been the Committee’s liaison with local residents including additional site visits to sensitive locations.
Following the completion of B&NES Core Strategy attention has moved to the combined authorities of the West of England. Due largely to national pressure on housing development the Committee is carefully monitoring the consultation about a Joint Spatial Plan and Transport Strategy both of which have vital implications for Keynsham. Safeguarding green belt and maintaining our town as a distinct and separate community are two key policies fundamental to the Committee. To further strengthen the town the Committee decided in Spring 2016 to launch a Neighbourhood Development Plan for Keynsham. This will strengthen our legal position with planning matters, help establish what Keynsham people really want and add community cohesion to an urban area experiencing exceptional growth.

ALLOTMENTS COMMITTEE REPORT BY CHAIRMAN, COUNCILLOR CAROLE DUCKETT The Allotments Committee have met three times in the municipal year and I am happy to report that the meetings chaired by myself, have been very friendly meetings, with members of the Keynsham Allotment Association and Town Councillors attending. Halfyearly reports from the Allotment Association are presented to the Committee and topics discussed have been, Polytunnels, Bonfires, siting of compost toilet, water supply and security.
I also attended the very well supported AGM of the Keynsham Allotment Association in February 29/04/2016 10:30:49 which was interesting and informative.

We wanted to make the event more ‘family and community’ friendly so with that in mind, the large fun fair previously taking over much of Ashton Way car park was replaced by attractions to appeal to the younger audience, based in the improved environment of the Civic Centre. In order to include Temple Street more in the celebrations, we moved the performance stage to that area and also decorated the street with wall mounted Christmas trees – a feature which we hope to extend to the rest of the town centre next year. The weather wasn’t very kind on the night, but we were delighted that more community groups than in previous years took stalls along the high street, including an animal arena which housed a particularly angelic donkey! It was especially pleasing that almost all retailers or businesses in the Town Centre either opened their doors for the evening or at least left their lights on to welcome visitors. Local choirs and dancers entertained us on stage and in the street, and this year we also featured a full programme of entertainment in ‘The Space’, which was jammed pack all evening. We hope to encourage more residents and visitors to take part in our Winter Festival and have plans afoot to make that happen. See you next year!
The Joint Arts Committee meets quarterly and is made up of 6 Town Councillors, B&NES Councillors and B&NES Senior Arts Development Officer. The Committee’s key tasks are to monitor the budget for the Keynsham Arts Development Activities and to monitor the progress of the Keynsham Arts Plan. The Committee receives reports from the successful Arts grants organisations and also reports from the Arts Advisory Group. The pop-up Arts Space was held in Market Walk for the first time in December, organised by members of the Joint Arts Committee and was an excellent success with 60% of the attendees from the BS31 postcode area and there were many positive comments from visitors to the Arts Space. It is planned to have a mini Arts Space/Arts Trail the week of the Keynsham Music Festival in June/ July 2016. The Town Council are currently working on other projects to bring colour and vibrancy to locations throughout the town.

GRANTS COMMITTEE REPORT BY CHAIRMAN, COUNCILLOR KATE SIMMONS Once again in 2015 the Town Council allocated £25,000 of its budget to grants for local groups that benefit Keynsham residents. GOOD CITIZENS AWARD
KEYNSHAM TOWN COUNCIL Keynsham Town Council’s Good Citizens Award was this year presented to Ric Davison, director of Keynsham Music Festival, Keynsham Town Community Radio presenter and Arts Consortium co-ordinator, a role in which he has brought a number of productions and performers to The Space. Ric received a framed certificate from Town Council Chairman Lisa O’Brien at the Annual Town Meeting on April 21, as well as £100 to go to a good cause of his choice. Ric spoke about his involvement in the community before saying his £100 would
be split between Keynsham Music Festival Association, Keynsham Town Community Radio, the Arts Consortium and Dorothy House, in memory of Francis Clifton, a close friend of his son who lived in Keynsham and worked with the Scouts and who died last year at the age of 23. After the presentation, Ric said: “I am honoured with this award, if not embarrassed. The work I do is far from finished and of course also relies on the devotion of many other volunteers. But I am pleased that my views on town regeneration are being acknowledged in this way.”

ike a Good Wine, We are Maturing. KeynshamNow, the Town’s Youth Council, meets monthly in The Space. We are a group of young people who want to make a difference in Keynsham. Our aim is to learn how to make change and to get young people’s views more widely known in the community. Very surprisingly, we were nominated for a Bath Pride Award, a set of annual awards supported by The Bath Chronicle. On 14th April, members of KeynshamNow attended the ceremony at the Bath Racecourse where we achieved a “Highly Commended”. The certificate is now proudly displayed in the new TimeOut youth centre. One of the ways KeynshamNow supports young people is by raising concerns about bullying in primary schools. Following a most successful visit to St Keyna Primary, at our May meeting, Megan Morris and two of her pupils visited us to discuss further the excellent work St Keyna are doing to combat this anti-social behaviour. KeynshamNow is impressed with the work going on there and also congratulated St Keyna Primary on a very positive Ofsted Report. More impressive to us than the Bath Pride Award was our invitation to take part in
the sell-out Keynsham European Question Time on Friday 27th May. Two members of KeynshamNow. Millie and Steph, were each given five minutes to speak, one for and one against, our membership of the EU. Clearly, this issue is most important for young people and all the people in The Space listened very carefully to two wellargued presentations. KeynshamNow intend to have a stall for the first time at the Keynsham Music Festival. We want to further engage with young people and to continue to raise our profile with the residents of Keynsham at the town’s most important annual community event. eynsham Music Festival is now one of the most successful “free” whole town community events in the UK. While it is also one of the largest, and highly organised, it retains, at its heart, the feel of a small town or even village event. This is something to be cherished and protected, and we can be proud of a wholecommunity participation that achieves just that! Especially as we move towards the 20th Festival in 2017. Keynsham Music Festival features a wide range of excellent and interesting food and drink, with a priority for local operators. This is no more true than with the on-site bars, all of which now are Keynsham-pubs-in-the Park with an agreed and very reasonable price range and a minimum of queuing. Please note that no glass can be brought on to the site, and alcohol in glass containers will be confiscated. The Festival relies on the Community’s care of The Park. Festival goers should respect the facilities and provision in The Park for rubbish and help to
maintain our honoured tradition leaving The Park on the Monday morning with the impression that nothing had happened over the weekend! We are indebted to the Keynsham Wombles for their work in ensuring that rubbish is never a problem for the audience and families. The Festival is also indebted to the whole community and all the individuals who make the Keynsham Music Festival a widely acclaimed family and community event; and to all the performers, local and international, who give their services for free in what is still a real celebration of local and original talent. The Festival relies on the funding of Keynsham Town Council, B&NES and the generosity of local business and service supporters. Please respect our sponsors, and please remember that your donations are also a crucial part of meeting the Festival’s costs – over £60,000. Donations are donations and not obligatory in any way, but still provide The Festival with an essential source of income.

ELECTRONIC TICKET KIOSK Printing, selling and buying tickets for local shows in Keynsham should no longer be a problem for any performing group or society.
The hosting site will also serve as the main internet source, currently to find out about all productions on in The Space.
Keynsham Tickets has been set up by The Keynsham Music Festival Association, with the help of Keynsham Town Council, so that there is a central Keynsham place to sell tickets – open to all local organisations and venues to use for free.
Tickets for all the Keynsham Music Festival week events are now on sale, as are tickets for the Mikron Theatre’s play Pure (Chocolate) on the 30th July, and the Stasima Theatre Co’s production of HMS Pinafore coming in August. Saltford Community Association have also made use of the kiosk for the June production of Songs For A New World at Saltford Hall.
Tickets are booked, paid for online and printed in the buyers’ own home. The system handles all the accounting, records and “cash” handling. The kiosk can be founded and viewed at: keynshamtickets.cloudvenue.co.uk (there is no need to type in www).

eynsham Wombles are having another busy year. There have already been 3 ‘Big Wombles’ - one in February, a second in March as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Clean for the Queen scheme and the third at the end of May, which tackled the Queen’s Road Playing Fields and surrounding areas. Tea and cake are rapidly becoming a feature of ‘Big Wombles’, with a tea party at the Bowls Club after the May one and tea and cake at Community@67 following the March litter pick. Wombles will again be keeping the Keynsham Music Festival as litter free as possible this July. If you would like to help, please contact Erica Davies at womble@transitionkeynsham.org. The giant sea creature bins will be making another appearance and anyone who enjoyed making sea creatures from recyclables last year will be able to have another go, as there’ll be a small craft area attached to the Transition Keynsham/Womble stand. All makes and models of washing machines, cookers, cooker connections, dishwashers, tumble dryers, hobs and fridge freezers. Quotations for new equipment with installation and removal service included free of charge, please call for further information.
Discarded cigarette butts are one of the biggest problem areas for litter. With this in mind, Keynsham Wombles have obtained a large number of free, portable ashtrays. Many Wombles carry them when out litter-picking and are more than happy to be approached for one, or people can contact womble@transitionkeynsham.org.

COMMUNITY@67 We are now recruiting members for the afterschool maths club at 67 Queens Rd. There are 6 places available to pupils in Years 5 or 6 from any school in Keynsham. DR CHERYL SCOTT Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. Not at present. I grew up in Bath (and was shocked to learn recently I spent my time at senior school sitting on top of an unexploded WW2 bomb!) My parents still live in Bath but I have spent the last 25 years living in a village near the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex (Winnie-the-Pooh country). I am currently renting in Farrington Gurney and will be looking to relocate to Keynsham once my house in Sussex is sold. Q. What did you do before you came to Keynsham ? A. Job-wise I started off in academic research (tropical diseases) but then moved into a commercial career and spent 11 years as a Company Director/business owner supplying scientific laboratory equipment. I have subsequently been working with a wide range of Universities, start-ups, individual entrepreneurs and government organisations providing business planning support and access to finance for healthcare and life science companies in the South East. Q: What prompted you to become a Clerk? A: I have really enjoyed volunteering in my village as both a Parish Councillor and as the Chair of the Flood Forum to help things happen at local level. I have also become fascinated at how local government works and when I started to plan my move back to the West
Country, several Councillors encouraged me to consider becoming a Clerk. Most of my working life has been spent helping small businesses but I wanted a position enabling me to transfer that skill and experience towards helping communities to grow. Q: What do think you will enjoy about working for the Council A: I’m looking forward to working with a great bunch of friendly and enthusiastic people (Councillors, staff and community volunteers) for the benefit of the Keynsham residents. Q. Away from work what are your hobbies/ interests? A: I enjoy gardening and playing the piano – but my main passion is guinea pigs! I have several of my own and help transport guinea pigs rescued from poor situations to a network of guinea pig rescues across the UK. Q. What do you feel are the best things about Keynsham? A: Although I’ve only been here for a short time, I am truly amazed at the wide range of community organisations/activities available and the passionate commitment of the volunteers. There are some beautiful amenity/ green spaces and, even though there is a lot of development going on, Keynsham still retains its unique “market town” identity and friendly community spirit.

he Transition Keynsham groups have been busy over the past couple of months, digging the veg plot, working on our renewable community energy plans and wombling far and wide. We’re gearing up for the big event of the year Keynsham Music Festival, where you’ll find the wombles keeping the park and its surroundings litter free. We’ll also be at the Live Simply event on the evening of Friday 1st July. We’re gearing up for the second year of our abundance project. Anyone who’d like to get involved please let lizbarling@gmx.com know. We’re looking for people who can help us pick and distribute fruit, and fruit trees in need of
picking. We’d also like to hear from anyone who is interested in joining a community cider making club. Keynsham Memorial Park is playing host to the Festival of Nature on Sunday 19th June. The Festival of Nature is the UK’s largest free celebration of the natural world, and this year it’ll will be visiting Keynsham for the first time, bringing with it the wonderful Dreamshed Theatre for a unique performance of Wind in the Willows. Pull up a seat at the bandstand to follow the wild and wacky adventures of Ratty, Mole, Badger and of course the ever-eccentric Mr Toad, then join them for hands-on workshops and activities around the park, where you can unveil some of the best kept secrets of the riverbank. What will you discover? After the performance there will be a number of workshops for children, one of which Transition Keynsham will be running at our plot in the park. We’ll be looking at which plants are good for pollinators, and why bees and bugs play such an important role in nature. Come along and visit us!

ROASTED BANANA FROZEN YOGHURT INGREDIENTS 4 very ripe bananas 330g dark brown soft sugar 900g plain Greek yoghurt1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a 20cm tin with foil. Peel the bananas and cut lengthways. Place bananas in the tin and cover with the brown sugar. Bake until the sugar melts and the banana is soft and roasted. Reserve 1 banana and transfer the others along with the melted sugar to a large bowl. Mix in the yoghurt and the vanilla. Pour yoghurt in the ice cream maker and freeze it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Add the reserved banana just before you turn off the ice cream maker, this will ensure you have some chunks of banana in the frozen yoghurt. Enjoy it!
