KEYNSHAM WINTER FESTIVAL - FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER Details and event programme inside (pages 19-21)
KEYNSHAM NEWS T
he Autumn is well and truly upon us as the mornings get sharper and the evenings draw in. As the trees turn from green to gold, we must congratulate our Keynsham in Bloom Community Group for winning GOLD at the South West in Bloom awards. They have put in a tremendous effort to brighten up our environment, not only bringing colour to our town centre but clearing litter and tending floral displays at our railway station, providing that extra welcome to visitors and commuters alike. Congratulations also go to the many residents who participated in the Keynsham in Bloom awards. You demonstrated the wealth of ‘green fingers’ in our neighbourhoods, whether with simple pots or gardens. Well done to you all. Preparations are well underway for our Winter Festival to ‘take over’ our town centre on Friday 27th November. We have focussed exclusively on Keynsham businesses to supply food and refreshments and more community groups than ever before have taken up stalls for the festivities. We have a full programme in the Community Space above the library including the complete tale of ‘Peter Pan’ in 30 minutes! The whole of the Town Centre from the top of the High Street to Carpenters Lane will be filled with things to do, buy, eat and drink so we do hope you will come along to participate in the celebration of our town. Dial-a-Ride are running a free park and ride service, from Waitrose to Ashton Way. Finally, there has been much forceful debate regarding the location and content of our new leisure centre. Views have been taken on board and the Town Council will be urging further consultation and participation in deciding the facilities to be provided by BANES. With our population rising and a heightened sense of pride and passion in our community, Keynsham Town Council will continue to fight for your best interests. Best wishes

ince opening last November, Keynsham’s new Community Space, or “The Space” as it’s known for cultural events, has presented over 20 shows, and over 2000 people have attended the 120 seat theatre. There is a regular Keynsham Film Works screening each month, and the year has featured two visiting professional shows, music concerts and events by local groups. The Space has also seen the welcome return of Bath Festival concerts to Keynsham with two shows so far and children’s workshops for the
Bath Children’s Literature Festival. The Keynsham Performing Arts Consortium, who promote or broker most of the events in The Space, are very keen for the venue to develop into an even more regular place for quality entertainment and public events. A family winter show is being negotiated and an exclusive Keynsham on-line ticket kiosk in being investigated. Meanwhile, tickets for some events are available from the Keynsham Town Council Office, 15-17 Temple Street, Keynsham.

Wednesdays TimeOut Youth Centre operate projects on Wednesday evenings 7pm – 9.30pm for 13-19 year olds. Entry to these are free however limited places are available. Projects over the winter season will include: drug awareness training, sexual health, mental health & wellbeing, photography, graffiti, T shirt designing, critter creations, nail & beauty session, cartoon magazine creation and bullying awareness. The Centre will also be piloting an afterschool club on Tuesdays for young people aged 10-13yrs from 4pm – 6pm. These sessions will have a focus around projects which will support young people in becoming young adults. TimeOut Youth Centre runs a project on Thursdays (4pm – 6pm) which is called ‘Around the World in 80 Meals’. This project has limited places and focuses each week on a different country. Within the session young people participate in cooking several meals from that country and also get involved with quizzes and cultural learning as well.
ALLOTMENT PROJECT The Allotment Project received two awards within the Keynsham In Bloom competition. We received a Gold award in the allotment category and also the Best New Entry award. As the winter heads in, our last session at the allotment was over the October half term and focused on putting in the wood edging around the beds, creating our compost area and the bee hotel. The Allotment Project has been very positive with young people. They have been able to grow and then cook with a vast range of vegetables, get to know other residents at the allotment and have started to foster good relationships with the older generations. We will be restarting the project in the new year.
KEYNSHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD TASK FORCE The ‘Hoodies’ received an award for the South West In Bloom ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ competition. The theme for the winter months will be ‘connecting with other generations’ with an aim of reaching out to those over this period who may feel isolated or alone. We will, like last year, be cooking mince pies and will be visiting several residential care homes with Christmas cards for the elderly residents. The Task Force will continue to do litter picks in the Memorial Park and will also liaise with Sainsburys to ensure the area around our new town clock is kept clean and maintained.
TACKLING ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR We will be starting a six session project, running from November to January, working with young people identified as misusing substances in public (cannabis, cocaine, MDMA, legal highs & alcohol). The aims behind these projects will be education, harm reduction and exploring what is acceptable behaviour within society and the impact on others. For further information about TimeOut contact Damien Erangey, Youth Worker, on 0117 9868683.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL ST JOHN’S CHURCH Christmas Tree Festival at St John’s Church 4th - 6th December 2015 Friday 4th 6 - 9pm Saturday 5th 10am - 6pm Sunday 6th 12pm - 5pm Following the success of the Christmas Tree Festival in 2012 and 2013 we are again delighted to be inviting local community organisations/ schools to take part in this year’s festival. Plans are well underway and many tree spaces have already been booked. For those of you who did not manage to participate or visit previous displays the festival provides a wonderful seasonal community occasion where local groups can showcase their
work by entering a decorated Christmas tree. Many groups use the opportunity to decorate their tree with symbols/decorations representing the activities of the group. During the festival there will be musical events, craft stalls and refreshments available. There will be a small fee of £20 to enter a tree in the festival, which includes the provision of the tree, stand and lights. Organisations will only need to decorate their tree. We anticipate lots of visitors over the weekend, entry to see the displays will be free but donations will be invited. Any profits from the festival will go towards St John’s Church to help play its role in the community of Keynsham. If you would like to reserve a tree email treefestival@hotmail.co.uk or leave a message at the Parish Office on 0117 9863354.

RADIO HOUR K
TCR has been set up within Community@67 in Queens Road and spearheaded by a small group of volunteers who are keen to develop the project. The idea for community radio in Keynsham has been a long standing ambition but previous attempts by groups to work with existing radio stations have been unsuccessful. The Keynsham Hour features reflections on Keynsham news, local gossip, community spotlights and almost entirely Keynsham music.

Community radio enables local people to develop a programme that is unique to their neighbourhood and provides a voice for the whole community. KTCR is really keen to get more people involved to help produce and extend programmes that are of interest to all ages and cover all aspects of the community, so any groups or people locally that are interested in making radio should get in touch. KTCR is currently accessible to people that have access to the internet or are in range of the Somer Valley frequency 97.5FM – at 1pm every Thursday. The Keynsham Hour is also available at any time on the ‘Listen Again’ facility available through the website: www.somervalleyfm.co.uk Click on ‘Listen Again’, search for ‘The Keynsham Hour’ on the right hand menu and you can listen to the last three shows. Follow their progress on Facebook www.facebook.com/ ktcradio and Twitter account @ktcradio. If you’re a local musician, author, poet or similar, post any materials you’d like featured to KTCR at their Facebook, Twitter or through the door at Community@67. Anyone interested in joining the team, and particularly local organisations who would like to feature on the Keynsham Hour, please contact George Morgan at keynshamhour@gmail.com, or via KTCR’s Twitter or Facebook. MEET THE TEAM
JACKIE SYDENHAM Position: Administrative Assistant Service: 11 years Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. I live a couple of miles away in Oldland Common. Q. What is your experience as an Admin Assistant? A. I have worked in various office environments over the years both in Glasgow and Bristol, I gained very differing administrative experience within each role. Although I took a break from full-time employment to bring up my family, I ran a secretarial service from my home for the self-employed, local Job Centres and students, this enabled me to keep up to date with office practice and dealing with the public. Q: What do you enjoy most about your work with the Town Council? A: I have been very impressed at how grateful and polite the residents of Keynsham are for any help you give them. They are always very friendly and thankful when you assist them with their enquiries or help them in any way. I could count on one hand any bad reactions I have received, this is a testament to the people of Keynsham as I have dealt with many telephone and face to face enquiries over the years. The variation in the work I undertake at the Council, be it customer service to arranging events, ensures each day is different and therefore the job does not get repetitive.
Q: Away from work what are your hobbies/ interests? A: The usual socialising with family and friends is important. Have enjoyed camping at some music festivals and intend to do more of this. Walking, music, gardening, eating out and city breaks all play a part in my free time. Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A: The voluntary groups in Keynsham are fantastic, too many to mention but they are all very passionate and extremely hard working, all for the good of Keynsham. The commitment and effort shown by individuals in these groups to improve and help make Keynsham a better place to live is outstanding. The events held in Keynsham are a real positive for the community, especially the Music Festival which is growing year on year.
