WOW! What wonderful weather we are having, I hope you are all enjoying it and playing outside?? It is nearly the end of the school year and I am sure you are all looking forward to moving up to your new classes and meeting your new teachers. Good luck to all of the Year 6 children who will be moving onto secondary school and we all hope you have a great time and learn lots! Once again we have some superb competitions in HEY! News & Reviews Recruitment process for the St John’s school Council
Welton Primary…Airport On Friday 18th June, Welton Primary School received an international makeover when staff and pupils transformed the school into an airport from where they caught ‘flights’ that took them to French-speaking countries around the globe. The school dining hall was converted into the airport where pupils were checked in, answered questions in French and received their boarding passes. They then proceeded through the security checks and passport control - where they had their special Welton Primary passports stamped - to the departure lounge and waited for the tannoy announcement for their flight. This was all staffed by the extremely responsible and enthusiastic Year 6 pupils.
On Wednesday 19th May the school governors asked the members of the school council (from Years 2-6) to interview some teachers for the post of Assistant Head Teacher at St. John’s School. The governors wanted to know our opinions of the candidates. There were four teachers to interview. First we welcomed them and let them say a little bit about themselves. Then we asked them about the things we thought would make a good Assistant Head Teacher, like why they wanted the job and what they could bring to our school. To help us decide which teacher we liked the best we looked at the teachers expressions when they gave us their answers. Then we reviewed and compared the answers they had given us. We decided what kind of person we though they were and whether or not they should be given the job of Assistant Head Teacher. We enjoyed being involved in the interviews and would like to do it again, although we almost missed our lunch!
A Big Thank You Kim Buchan is the school caretaker for St Mary’s Primary School in Writhlington. The reason the Deputy Head Teacher has sent us a letter is that Kim is AMAZING. Mrs Lampert says “Our school site has fields, a conservation area with pond dipping platforms, an enclosed sensory garden, quiet areas and playground equipment not to mention the school and outside buildings,. Kim looks after all of this, often giving of her own time in the evenings and at weekends. Recently she has taken on the project, alongside parents and other members of our community, to enter our school in the local ‘Bath in Bloom’ competition. She has led gardening teams to plant vegetables and fruit in the Early Years Foundation Stage outside classroom, planted sunflowers around the sensory gardens and worked with pupils to grow flowers, plants and shrubs all around the school. It looks beautiful! What a fantastic place to come to school!” Paige (Year 6) said of Kim, “Mrs Buchan is a wonderful person. She’s always happy and smiling and does anything she can to help our school. I like the way she lets everyone help her and she always has time to talk to us.”

Year 6 leavers service at Wells Cathedral
Arts Council England has awarded Artsmark Gold to St John’s CE VA Primary School in recognition of the school’s commitment to, and excellence in, arts education. St John’s is part of the 1676 schools in England who received an Artsmark award this year. Carolyn Banfield, Head teacher of St John’s CE VA Primary School in Midsomer Norton said: “I’m delighted that the Arts Council has once again recognised St John’s dynamic arts education programme. Because of the outstanding opportunities we are able to provide for our children, they are enthused and motivated by the arts in all its diversity. Our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed working with a range of professional artists, dancers and musicians and as a result have achieved great things.’
High Littleton Tag Rugby Success High Littleton year 5and 6 tag rugby team took part in the Midsomer Norton Tag Rugby Tournament. The winners and runners up would take part in the Primary Rugby partnership Day at Bath Rugby’s Recreation Ground. Beating Camerton, St Nicholas, Westfield and Paulton whilst drawing with Peasedown St John, Trinity and Midsomer Norton meant that High Littleton were within one try of claiming the top spot. Our galliant efforts saw us achiving runner up position. The squad were Matt J, Matt W, Ali, Chloe, Maddie, Charlie, Emily, Ryan and Edward.

On Wednesday 23rd June the Year 6 pupils from St John’s Primary School in Midsomer Norton joined over 2000 pupils at Wells Cathedral over a series of 6 days! The day consisted of an opening ceremony which was exciting and enjoyable followed by two amazing workshops during the morning. The workshops were really interesting and were all sorts of things from art to dance to mime to global community work. Everything was brought together in the afternoon with a service. We sang songs with all the schools together in the centre of the cathedral.
Longvernal Mosiacs Year 4 and 5 children from Longvernal Primary School displayed their creativity when they were vistied by artist Anita Andrews. The pupils designed 2 fantastic mosaics inspired by their links with Spain and Uganda and also the community of the school. Children cut the tiles and worked with Anita to ensure they were placed correctly and the picture came to life. The mosaics are on display in the school hall for all to see!
Cake Sale for Haiti A group of year 3 and 4 girls from Midsomer Norton Primary School organised and ran their own cake sale in aid of the Haiti appeal. The children considered every aspect of the sale, making posters, thinking about hygiene and encouraging the school community to join in. An amazing £115 was raised. Well done to all involved!

On Monday 14th June, the juniors of Farrington Gurney Church of England Primary School took part in a fantastic Sing Up Concert at Wells Cathedral. Over the course of 6 weeks, the children had been taught 8 songs by one of the Wells choristers and the Wells Cathedral organist, Oliver Walker. The culmination of these singing lessons was the concert in which Farrington, along with 3 other primary schools, sang their hearts out! Sarah Appleton (YR 5) and Megan Oram (YR 4) – seen in the picture in their navy school uniforms – showed great talent, singing a verse from the African song Soualle as a duet.
The “Caribbean” comes to WSM! On Thursday 10th June, the infants of Farrington Gurney Church of England Primary School and St Mary’s Writhlington Church of England School went to Weston-superMare for a joint day of fun on the beach and a visit to Seaquarium. Both schools, who share Executive Headteacher Sue Jones, have been focussing on “The Caribbean” as their topic this term and what better way to do this than with a trip to the seaside! It may not have been quite as hot and tropical as in the Caribbean, but the children were not in the least deterred!
Westfield Year 3 Play Our Year 3 play was called’ Just Like Us, ‘ and it was about children in World War 2. Some of us played English evacuees and some were Jewish. The play was about people being different and being able to get along with each other. We sang some lovely World War 2 songs and our parents and grandparents joined in. Year 6 Tag Rugby Team The Tag Rugby team of Farrington Gurney Church of England Primary School qualified for the South West finals of the Tag to Twickenham Competition. This makes them one of the top 250 teams in the country! They recently played at Taunton School against teams from as far a field as Redruth, Cheltenham and Gloucester. As a small school, playing some Year 4 pupils in this Year 6 competition, they were delighted with their excellent performance.
Sustainability at St John’s Last term during our Eco Club meeting we decided to take part in the ‘In Bloom’ competition to improve our local environment. On Monday 10th May we paid a visit to the local garden centre in Chilcompton to buy a variety of plants. We followed the council’s theme of ‘fire’ and chose plants in colours of red, yellow, blue and orange. We spent the whole morning planting over six pots. It was very hard work but after we finished it was worth it. We hope the judges will come and pay us a visit next month as we are very proud of our work. By Courtney Burns and Rebecca Cleaves

The other players should only do what the director says when he say “ACTION!” For example: he says’ roar like a tiger.. NOW!” everyone should keep quiet. For 2 or more people This game is best played on a sandy beach. 1. Draw the shape of a sharks mouth with teeth in the sand- use your finger or a stick. The sharks head can be made bigger to make the game easier, or smaller to make it harder. 2. Draw a line in the sand about five big steps away from the shark. Everyone stands behind this line to play. 3. Take turns trying to throw a pebble or shell into the shark’s mouth. If you manage to do this, you get two points. If your pebble lands on the shark (but notin the mouth) you get one point. You don’t get any points if it lands anywhere else! 4. The first person to reach ten points wins!

This take on a classic camp craft inspires your family members to create versions of themselves with natural treasures from your own garden.
Materials • 9 (11-inch) balloons (for 3 balls) • Funnel • 2 1/4 cups of dried lentils • Scissors
Materials • Sticks and twigs • Hand pruners (a parent’s tool) • Hot-glue gun • Flat stone • Colored pencils • Small objects from nature, such as pinecones, pine needles, pieces of bark, acorns, and leaves • 8-inch piece of twine (optional)
Instructions 1. Stretch the first balloon by inflating it halfway, holding it closed for about 30 seconds, and deflating it. 2. Place a funnel in the balloon’s neck and gradually pour in 3/4 cup of lentils, pushing them in as you go. The balloon should be firm but squeezable. 3. Snip off the balloon’s thick rubber lip. Cut the neck off a second balloon and gently stretch the opening. 4. Ease the second balloon over the filled balloon, tucking in the neck as you go. 5. Cut the neck off the third balloon, stretch the opening, and ease it over the other two. Repeat this process to make a set of three balls, or however many you’d like.
Materials • 2 cardboard tubes (toilet paper tubes, or wrapping paper tubes trimmed to about 5-1/2 inches) • 1 roll each of red, white, and blue duct tape • Clear 1-gallon, food-safe plastic pot • 2 (15-ounce) unopened cans of food, with labels removed (for weight) • Clean, empty metal can or plastic bucket (ours is a 12-ounce peanut can) • Parchment paper (optional) • 2 metal bottle caps Instructions 1. Wrap the cardboard tubes with red and white duct tape. Affix an arm to each side of the potl with a loop of tape. 2. Wrap the bottom of the canned goods with red tape. (Tip: Write the contents on the top of each can so that you’ll know what’s in them.) Place loops of tape on their lids, then press the potl into place on top. 3. To make the robot’s head, wrap the empty can or bucket with blue duct tape. Cut eyes from white duct tape and a mouth from red. (Tip: The eyes and mouth are easier to make if you first attach the duct tape to a piece of parchment paper. Cut out the shapes, then peel them off the parchment backing.) Attach the bottle caps to the white circles with loops of tape. Stack the head on top of the pot.
Instructions 1. Trim the sticks with the pruners and hot-glue them together to form a body with arms, a torso, and legs. 2. Draw a face on the stone with colored pencils, then glue it to the torso. 3. Glue on the other features, such as pinecone feet, an acorn cap, bark pants, or a pine needle skirt.

Magazine’s Tina Veater who hosted an ‘al fresco’ Cook and Chat lunch in her sunny garden in Radstock this month. Tina invited ten friends to her home and Riverford cook Jude Davies prepared the guests a mouthwatering range of dishes using seasonal organic vegetables and fruit. On the menu; potato and spinach frittata, orange and caraway dip with feta cheese, blood salad followed by vanilla Panna Cotta and spiced rhubarb. Liz McPherson of Riverford explains “We are inviting people to host these Cook and Chat lunches or suppers to encourage them and their friends to look again at organic vegetables as versatile, reasonably priced ingredients and a great basis for tasty, healthy home-cooking for the whole family. You invite friends to your home, we provide the cook and the ingredients.”
In the spirit of Riverford guests were encouraged to chat to Jude about their own cooking experiences and gained inspiration for using vegetables in a creative way for the whole family. Everybody enjoyed the results when they sat down to lunch!

Water Balloon Catch This wet and wacky game is as refreshing as a dip in the pool. On a hot day, even if you drop the ball, you’re still cool. What You Need • Gallon-size milk jugs (one for each player) • Tape • Ribbons • Water balloons Instructions 1. Create the catchers by cutting the bottom off a gallon-size milk jug (one for each player), taping the cut edges, and decorating with ribbon. 2. Fill a bunch of water balloons to the size of a grapefruit. 3. See how many times you can toss the balloons without breaking them or how far you can catch and throw them.
Splash and Score Kids can test their aim and douse their opponent at the same time with this water balloon game of throwing and blocking skills. What You Need • 1 bucket and 1 plastic bat for every 2 players • 6 water balloons per player (for each game) Instructions 1. Fill the buckets to the brim and line them up. Divide into 2 teams (throwers and receivers). The throwers line up several yards away from the buckets and try to toss water balloons into the buckets. 2. Each successful toss is worth 1 point. Each member of the receiving team sits (or kneels) behind a bucket and holds a plastic bat ready to defend his or her bucket by blocking the incoming water balloons. Be sure the buckets are far enough apart that batters won’t hit each other. 3. Each thrower tosses 2 balloons, the score is tallied, and then the receivers get a chance to be the throwers and earn points. The teams continue to alternate throwing and blocking. The team with the highest score at the end of 3 rounds wins.
Make a Splash What’s the best way to jazz up a classic game of jump rope? Just add water! (3 or more players) Give each player a cup of water. With cup in hand, each player jumps into the turning rope and completes 3 skips in a row. The player with the most water in her cup after her turn wins. (6 or more players) Divide players into 2 teams and give each team a cup of water. One team turns the rope. The other sends a player into the turning rope with the cup, singing, “Water in the cup, splashing all about. Jump in, (teammate’s name), and help me out.” This teammate jumps in and takes the cup from the first player, who then jumps out. After each player has jumped once, the other team has a turn. The team with the most water in its cup at the end of the game wins.

Beating yourself up is bad for your health! Think carefully. Who is your harshest critic? Your overinvolved mother? That competitive friend? Perhaps an annoying in-law? Chances are the person who gives you the hardest time is YOU. After all, who’s the one spending time and energy in front of the mirror worrying about your new haircut? Who is it beating themselves up when a project isn’t going right at work or after an argument with a friend or family member? Most of us put far too much of our energy in to negative thoughts, often affecting the way we live our lives or leading to mental or physical health problems. Issues with our bodies and personalities can continue for years, if not a lifetime. When did you first start thinking that you weren’t a confident speaker, your thighs were too fat or your chest was too sunken? Millions of people suffer with serious disorders such as depression, social anxiety or body dysmorphia, extreme mental conditions that cause debilitating fears and anxieties, which stop the sufferer from functioning normally in their day-to-day life. These are people who fear answering a ringing phone, are terrified of social rejection, who look in the mirror and see something hideous, who can’t face getting out of bed in the morning. But these conditions can be treated with drugs and counselling, every day anxieties and worries can’t. It’s all too easy to say to a worried friend having a hard time “it’s not that bad,” or “I don’t know what you’re talking about, you’re fantastic!” But few of us give ourselves the same courtesy. Speak to a close friend who you know will be honest with you and ask them about your worries. Chances are they’ve never noticed that your stomach bulges in tight tops or that you blush whenever you speak to a member of the opposite sex. Ask them what their worries are and even if you have noticed that their hair is a bit bushy or that they talk before they think you’ve probably wished you had their lovely curls or that you find their foot-in-mouth problem quite endearing. So next time you find yourself criticising the way you look or something you have (or haven’t) done put yourself in your best friend’s shoes. What would they say to you? If you can start looking at yourself from the outside, seeing what others can see, you’re well on the way to pushing those nagging doubts and self criticisms away for good. Write down everything you dislike about yourself, read it back or – even better – ask someone to read it out to you. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Stop the cycle of negative thinking and you may have just saved your own sanity or even your life.

A bottled version of the game I spy
Here’s something to do with all of the rocks that seem to magically pop out of the garden each spring; turn them into a colorful, interactive art-and-building set for your kids. Materials • Rocks • Outdoor acrylic paint Instructions 1. After they’ve gathered a small bucketful, have your young artists wash the rocks, then paint them with outdoor acrylic paint. 2. When the paint is dry, kids can stack, sort, and design to their hearts’ content. Our testers made pyramids, circles in the grass, paths, and more. A bonus: your kids can continue to add to the collection as more rocks turn up.

Materials • 15 to 20 small items such as a paper clip, a seashell, a shiny bead, or a googly eye • Clear plastic jar with the label removed (we used a peanut butter jar) • Pen, paper, and scissors • Mixed birdseed (we used about 1 cup) • Clear packing tape Instructions 1. Let your child gather a handful of tiny ‘treasures’ from around the house. 2. Trace the lid of the jar onto paper and cut out the circle. On it, list all of the items your child’s collected so players will know what to look for. (Or, print the list from your computer.) 3. Pour about an inch of birdseed into the jar, then drop in 3 or 4 of the small items. Add some more birdseed, then more treasures, and so on until you’re within an inch of the top. Leave that final space empty so the contents will have room to move around when shaken. Screw on the lid. 4. Tape the list of items to the lid and seal the jar shut with more tape. Give it a good shake, and see what you can find.

Rhubarb and strawberry crumble By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book Serves 4 Ingredients 2-4 rhubarb stalks, cut into slices 2cm thick 1 punnet strawberries, hulls removed, large ones cut in half 165g plain flour 50g soft light brown sugar 150g rolled oats 125g unsalted butter Place the rhubarb in a deep pie dish. Toss the strawberries with a tablespoon of the flour and add to the rhubarb. Sprinkle half the sugar on top. Put the oats, butter and remaining sugar and flour in a food processor and pulse until the mixture starts to come together. Spread the crumble over the fruit and bake in an oven preheated to 180C for 35-40 minutes, until the rhubarb is tender and the crumble is browned. Serve with clotted cream.
By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book Serves 4 Ingredients 500g shelled broad beans 350g penne 100g pancetta or smoked streaky bacon, cut into fine batons 1 tbsp butter or olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 200ml double cream a small bunch of mint, roughly chopped 2 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Cook the broad beans in boiling salted water for a few minutes, until tender. Drain and set aside. Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water until al dente. Meanwhile, fry the bacon in the butter or oil until just beginning to brown, then add the garlic and stir for a minute without letting it colour. Stir in the cream, mint and broad beans and simmer for a few minutes. Then add the Parmesan and season to taste. When the pasta is done, drain well, toss with the sauce and serve immediately.
Summer Omelette Ingredients For the roux 25g/1oz butter 50g/1¾oz plain flour 1 tbsp mustard 4 tbsp leek, chopped 300ml/10½fl oz whole milk 4 free-range egg yolks salt and freshly ground pepper 4 free-range egg whites 100g/3½oz smoked haddock 75g/2½oz grated Cornish Yarg cheese 1 tbsp chopped parsley
1. Pre-heat the oven 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. To make the roux, in a medium saucepan melt the butter and add the flour, mix for one minute and add the mustard and chopped leek. 3. Gradually add the milk to form a thick sauce. 4. Add in the egg yolks and stir and season with salt and freshly ground pepper. 5. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until stiff. 6. Fold the egg whites into the roux mixture. 7. Place the mixture in a medium-sized ovenproof saucepan. Sprinkle with the smoked fish, cheese and parsley. 8. Place into the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes and cook until golden brown. 9. Serve hot.

Jacob Bishop (Yr 5) started the ball rolling recieving his award for his fundraising commitments for both Children in Need and Sports Relief over the past two years. Jamie Firth (Yr 5) recieved his award for his fishing skills with the Cubs. Elliott Matthews (Yr 5) recieved his award for the entrepeneurial success he had gaining the most money from a ÂŁ1 investment, producing and selling non alcoholic fruit cocktails to raise money for his Cub Pack. Corey Walkes (Yr 4) was awarded his Blue Peter Badge for his outstanding achievements in trampolining, gymnastics and D.M.T . They each recieved personal letters from Tim Levell, the Editor of Blue Peter and all of the presentors, Andy, Helen and Joel congratulating them on their achievments and the coveted Blue Peter Badge and I.D card which allows them free entry into many attractions across the U.K until they reach their 16th birthdays!

Jack Hawkins is 5 years old from Welton primary school and is already a BMX Champion! Jack won rounds 1 and 2 of the BMX racing national series 2010 in Cheddar and will be taking part in the next round in Derby! Jack rides for Burnham BMX Club and has recently been sponsored by Ultimate BMX in Burnham and he is now looking forward to racing against much older riders in his next challenge! Max Norris recently won the sparring competition at an inter club competition at the Jamie Woodlands Tae Kwon Doe academy. The competition was held at Norton Hill school. Max is 10 and has been doing Tae Kwon Doe with Jamie since he was 6 years old, he would like to say ‘thank you’ to Jamie for being such a great instructor. Students from Matt Fiddes Martial Arts, Writhlington recently represented their school at the Southern Championships held in Portsmouth. Ethan Jones came 3rd in the Mixed aged 10-11 category for sparring and his brother Sebastian had overall 1st in the Mighty Matts category. Others who took part were Jennifer Perry and Tom Duery in the Mighty Matts. Kimberly Perry and Harry Dickinson in the Juniors Hand drill and best technique categories. Congratulations to all those who took part. The final of the Bath and North East Somerset Primary Schools Tag Rugby competition 2010 was a culmination of rounds of tag rugby matches held across BANES Primary schools during the season. The Trinity team consisted of 8 players, Alice Stockley and Jack Edwards as Captains with Jacob Bishop, Regan Ellis, Ethan Jones, Thomas Howard and Caitlan Rush from year 5 and year 6 and Corey Walkes from year 4. It was a hard fought final in the scorching sunshine, action packed with many turnovers and some fantastic tries. After a few agonising moments, Trinity were declared the winners with 8 tries to Newbridges’ 7. They were ecstatic! Many thanks go to Mr Penfold (Teacher Coach) and Mr Stockley (Parent and Governors Coach) and Mr Meridith (Parent Coach) for giving up their time to train, support and encourage the Trinity team both on and off the field and lead them to their moment of glory!

Marcie Elliot won the Westfield Top Trumps competition in March and went forward to the National Finals in London. Marcie writes, ‘On Saturday 29th May, I went to a Top Trump final at the Science Museum in London. I was very scared but I got used to it. I had to wear a T-Shirt that I was allowed to keep and I had to play Top Trumps against a big group of older children. I did very well and although I didn’t win overall, I got lots of prizes and I got a very special gold card. Then I stayed in a posh hotel overnight with my family.’

Midsomer Norton Rugby Club hosted a fantastic afternoon of Tag Rugby for eight local schools.

This culminated with Trinity winning the event and High Littleton as runners-up. Both these schools were invited to the Primary Rugby Partnership festival in Bath on Saturday 5th June to play the winners of the Bath tournament. In the runners-up event, High Littleton faced St Stephens and after the lead changing hands throughout the match, High Littleton ended up winners by one try. For the winners’ event, Trinity came up against Newbridge in a pulsating final. Both teams played some great rugby, with Trinity coming out on top by two tries. Well done to both our local schools for winning their matches.
Champions League Event 12 schools took part in the final football event of the season, the Midsomer Norton Champions League event. After many hard-fought group matches, the teams were ranked from 1 to 12 and the knockout matches began. The semi-finals ended up being Peasedown St John v Farrington Gurney and St Mary’s Timsbury v Farmborough. Farrington and St Mary’s made the final, with the team from Timsbury proving too strong and winning this year’s title. Congratulations to all their players, as well as all the other schools who took part.
Cricket There have been three cricket events in Bath, which schools from the Midsomer Norton area have taken part in. The Year 6 event took place at the end of May. Seven schools from our area took part, with Paulton qualifying for the county finals. The Year 5 event took place on the 15th June with eight of our local schools taking part, although none of them managed to make the final. Finally the girls tournament happened on the 10th June, with four schools from Midsomer Norton and district participating. Once again, Paulton qualified for the county finals. Well done to both their Year 6 and girls’ teams for making the finals.

The gila monster is the biggest lizard in the USA. It can be pink, yellow or orange but always with black bands. The bright colours warn predators off. It is properly active only for three months in spring. It hibernates in winter and spends the rest of the time underground. The jellyfish has no heart, blood, brain or gills, and it’s seethrough. In fact 95% of a jellyfish is water. It moves about by using special muscles which draw water into the bell and then shoot it out again – a bit like a jet ski. Most jellies trap food using their tentacles. The lion’s mane jellyfish has tentacles which can reach 30m. Jellyfish stings are caused by cells called nematocystes which shoot out like miniature harpoons into their prey.
