For the centenary commemorations marking the start of World War I, every child at St John’s made their own clay poppy. These were carefully crafted to form a display of uniquely designed poppies. After the firing and glazing process, almost 400 poppies representing each child at the school, were then ready for display. They provided a very special focal point for their Remembrance Day reflections and added very effectively to the poignancy of the moment. Everyone gathered on the school field around the display to join with the many millions of people across the country and in deed the world, to mark the 2 minute silence. This was concluded with a prayer and blessing. Money raised from the selling of the poppies was sent to the British Legion to support the amazing work that they do

CAKE, CAKE & MORE CAKE! The children of Chew Stoke Church School were delighted when they were told that they could “eat cake” instead of their usual morning snack – it was all in a good cause of course! Thanks to kind donations of cakes and raffle prizes, a fantastic £400 was raised as families and friends supported the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning, held at the School last month. This is the twelth year Chew Stoke Church School has held a coffee morning to support the Charity and over the years a staggering total of £5000 has been raised. Organiser Mrs Sue Lewis said “We are so grateful for all the people who support our coffee mornings, year after year. We couldn’t carry on without their generosity.”

MINING TALK Tom Randall from Radstock Museum went along to Welton Primary School to accept a guss and crook donated by the School. Tom spoke to the children about what it was like to be a child down the mine. Some children were able to trial using the guss and crook to pull a cart. They were surprised to see how heavy and uncomfortable this job proved to be. This supported the school’s local history focus in key stage 1 this term.

Unleash your child’s potential with Kumon At your local Midsomer Norton Study Centre, Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes which are tailored to your child’s age and ability. Established for over 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work. The worksheet-based study programmes are designed to pursue the potential of each child. Central to the Kumon Method is the principal of giving students the confidence and courage to confront new challenges and pursue their own goals. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching
in the conventional sense. Your child will therefore be equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. The Midsomer Norton Study Centre is located at Somervale School, Redfield Road, Midsomer Norto, with classes running on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3.45pm to 5.45pm.

RADSTOCK SCOUTS FIRST AID EVENING St John Ambulance trainers Helen Ashmore and Jack Torrance came to Radstock Scout Hall for an evening recently to teach the youngsters basic first aid, including primary survey (making the situation safe for patient and first-aider), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), recovery position and dealing with choking. The Scouts are working towards gaining their Emergency Aid stage 3 badge. Scout Leader Dave Turner said, “Being prepared and helping others are two vital parts of Scouting. There have been many instances in the past where scouts have saved lives through their knowledge of first aid.”
TUCKSHOP TUESDAY Peasedown St John Primary School launched ‘Tuckshop Tuesday’, which promotes and sells healthy snacks. The school council, PUPIL VOICE, researched healthy eating and decided to provide everyone with healthy options at break time. After interviewing representatives from B&NES Healthy Schools team to learn which snacks complyed with the government’s new School Food Plan, they carried out tasting sessions. TESCO kindly donated the items for the launch of their healthy tuckshop – including dried apricots and raisins, fresh fruit, cheese chunks and fruit loaf. Beckie Eschle from TESCO, who came along to help the children, commented “not only were the children making healthy choices but they also had wonderful manners.”

JOHN DOUGHERTY VISIT Laughter filled Peasedown St John’s school hall, as John Dougherty, author of the hilarious “Stinkbomb and Ketchup-face” books, entertained and enthused the children about reading for fun! “It was really entertaining! I was glued to him all the way through” (Izzy – Y3). John is also an accomplished musician, and sang some of his own songs accompanying himself on the guitar. “I liked the bit about all the pants in the song. It was funny” (Gabrielle Reception). “He really inspired me to want to write books of my own” enthused Imogen (Y3). “He told us that his children came up with the names of Stinkbomb and Ketchup-face” and “I’ve learnt never to stop day-dreaming” reflected two Y4 children. At lunchtime, John spent some time with some of the Y6 writers. “I thought the workshop with John Dougherty was amazing because he told us about his favourite first sentences in books. I learnt that when you write your first paragraph you’ve got to make the reader want to read on!” described Tyler (Y6).

BOLLYWOOD! ‘Bollywood’ style Indian dancing, curry cooking at the Stoke Inn and African drumming were just a few of the lessons that the children of Chew Stoke Church School enjoyed during their recent Multi-cultural week. The children had a very varied week, learning about the customs, culture and traditions of different countries around the world. Not forgetting our own culture, Squirrel Class made traditional British sandwiches and jam tarts and designed their own postage stamps, whilst Hedgehog Class drew pictures of the Queen, which were sent to Buckingham Palace! The children were absolutely thrilled when they received a reply from one of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting just a few days later! What a week!

SPOTS BEFORE THEIR EYES! Children In Need Day was celebrated in spotty style at Chew Stoke Church School! The Charity was supported by the School holding a traditional non-uniform day, with the children wearing anything spotty or anything yellow, with of course the odd pair of Pudsey Bear ears just for good measure! Even the acting Headteacher, Mr Ben Hewett was spotted wearing spotty socks and a spotty tie. Almost £200 was raised for the Charity.
LOTTERY FUNDING SUCCESS
STEPPING BACK IN TIME Key Stage One children at Midsomer Norton Primary were transported back in time to a Victorian classroom this week. The children visited Radstock Museum and bravely entered the Victorian classroom to meet their new and very strict teacher. The children were smartly dressed in their pinafores and waistcoats and after their time in the classroom, they explored the re-constructed coal mine, cottage kitchen and shop. The class teacher Miss Warcup who accompanied the children said, “It was such a fantastic learning experience for all the children.” A Year 2 pupil said, “The teacher was very strict.” The children were very happy to return to school for a hot dinner, safe in the knowledge their Victorian teacher had not travelled back with them.
St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School has received funding from the Big Lottery Fund. The award of £10,000 will fund a new Community Play Area within the school grounds that will enable members of the community to access the site and engage in fun family activities. A variety of extra curriculum activities will be delivered to improve the health and well being of children and families in keeping with the Every Child Matters Agenda. The school aims to create an environment that maximizes the learning potential of all pupils, encouraging healthy eating and physical activities. Mrs Cindy Stockting, Headteacher, stated, “A lot of hard work and dedication has gone into the planning and preparation of this project and would like to thank all of those who have been involved in this process. In keeping with the school’s ‘Open Door’ policy St Benedict’s School welcomes all members of the community to visit.”
COMMUNITY PROJECT The sense of ‘community’ is a very important aspect of St John’s and to remind us of just how valuable our interactions with each other are, we begin each new academic year with a project which brings us together through a creative and collaborative approach. The 2014/15 academic year has started with a collaborative approach using the theme of ‘Woven Together’. Using a piece of ribbon, everyone has added their strand to a large weaving showing that each of us adds something different and beautiful to our school. Together we have taken something quite ordinary and changed it to something quite extraordinary.

PANTO SEASON
It might be hard to believe, but it’s nearly time to dust down your Christmas decorations and start planning your festive celebrations. There’s no better way to get your family into the holiday spirit than by planning a trip to see a pantomime. If your kids haven’t yet experienced the magic of these performances, they’re in for a real treat. Love it or hate it (and most people seem to fall into one of those camps), the cross-dressing, innuendo-fuelled, custard pie frenzy of pantomime is as much a part of a traditional British Christmas as sprouts and the Queen’s speech...
“Oh yes it is.”

PARENT
PAGES BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY TO AVOID CHILDHOOD OBESITY As time-starved people continue to work longer and longer hours, increasing the chances that the family won’t eat together during the day at all, let alone for both the first and last meals, a new study suggests it has never been more important to ensure that adults and kids sit down to break bread in the same place, at the same time. There are, of course, several factors that need to be taken into account, although they all suggest that a shared meal is much better for the family unity as a whole. In addition to the obvious forming of bonds and display of interest in one another that usually help make a happy homestead, breakfasts made by an adult are much more likely to be nutritious and good for the youngster, which probably won’t shock anyone blessed with a sugar-addicted adolescent. Clearly, then, there’s plenty parents can take away from this, and interestingly it all comes down to some traditional family values: the importance of shared meal times, and of course the need for kids to get out and play whenever and wherever
possible, rather than sit inside. It’s worth noting that none of the children involved in the study were from the UK, but given the difference in expected working week between people in Britain and the eight European countries involved in the study, by rights the findings should resonate more here than anywhere else.
BE MONEY-WISE THIS CHRISTMAS
Let’s face it, Christmas can be very tough on your bank balance and we can all be tempted to rely on our credit cards to help see us through the festive season. However, interest can quickly escalate if we are not prompt in paying back the money, which can leave many of us in mountains of debt. If you are concerned about your finances this Christmas, you are not alone. According to research by supermarket chain ASDA last year, one in six parents were not sure how they’d be paying for Christmas. Credit cards can provide handy access to credit when needed, though they should always be used responsibly, in order to avoid running into difficulties. With recent research from the British Bankers’ Association revealing that the nation’s average monthly credit card spending reached £7.1 billion in 2012, Asda Money offers tips on how consumers can use their credit cards responsibly this Christmas. 1. Make payments on time In order to avoid penalties and keep your credit card charges down you should ensure that you make at least the minimum payment due each month. Setting up a Direct Debit to cover either the minimum payment or the full amount can help make sure you never forget to pay. Credit card companies may charge you more interest if you only make the minimum payments. 2. Make use of interest free periods At Christmas having the option to spread your payments out over several weeks or months can really help. Most cards have interest free periods for purchases. This means that, as long as you pay your balance in full by the due date each month, you shouldn’t be charged any interest. 3. Choose the right card for you There are many cards on the market and there are also many reasons for people to choose a particular credit card. Some are tempted by reward schemes or cash-back but if you tend to have a balance outstanding at the end of each month, a card with a lower interest rate might be the best option. The best card for you will depend on your spending habits and preferences. 4. Consider a balance transfer Most credit cards allow you to transfer an existing balance from another card, often at preferential interest rates which
may be as low as zero per cent for a given period. There is usually a fee to pay but you may still be able to save money in the long run. Any balance transfer not paid in full at the end of the promotional period will be charged the normal balance transfer rate which may be fairly high. 5. Take advantage of cash back offers Some credit cards will offer cash back on your purchases, helping you earn as you spend. Depending on the provider cash back can apply to all your spending, or be limited to specific stores or items. Check the details of each offer carefully to be sure you are getting the right deal for you.

THE HISTORY OF
THE STOCKING According to folklore, the tradition of the Christmas Stocking dates back to the days of a kindly nobleman whose wife had died of an illness leaving him and his three daughters in despair. After losing all his money in useless and bad inventions the family had to move into a peasant’s cottage, where the daughters did their own cooking, sewing and cleaning. When it came time for the daughters to marry, the father became even more depressed as his daughters could not marry without dowries - money and property given to the new husband’s family. One night after the daughters had washed out their clothing they hung their stockings over the fireplace to dry. That night Saint Nicholas, knowing the despair of the father, stopped by the nobleman’s house. Looking in the window Saint Nicholas saw the family had gone to bed. He also noticed the daughters’ stockings. Inspiration struck Saint Nicholas and he took three small bags of gold from his pouch and threw them one by one down the chimney and they landed in the stockings. The next morning when the daughters awoke they found their stockings contained enough gold for them to get married. The nobleman was able to see his three daughters marry and he lived a long and happy life. Children all over the world continue the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings. In some countries children have similar customs, in France the children place their shoes by the fireplace, a tradition dating back to when children wore wooden peasant shoes. In Holland the children fill their shoes with hay and a carrot for the horse of Sintirklass. In Hungary children shine their shoes before putting them near the door or a window sill. Italian children leave their shoes out the night before Epiphany, January 5, for La Befana the good witch. And in Puerto Rico children put greens and flowers in small boxes and place them outside the front door.

Here’s a New Year’s resolution anyone can keep: Resolve not to make any more New Year’s resolutions. Now, wasn’t that easy? If you’re trying to quit smoking, find a new job, get fit or shed some excess pounds, abandoning New Year’s resolutions won’t get you off the hook. But by setting more realistic goals for yourself and not limiting yourself to a once-a-year, do-or-die, all-out assault, you may find that the finish line isn’t so far away after all
EXERCISE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE PAINFUL! Don’t make the mistake of thinking exercise has to be full-throttle and that to make a difference you have to pound the treadmill till you hurt all over. Be honest with yourself - if you really hate going to the gym - find an alternative. Remember you should aim to fit in just 30 minutes a day of some kind of physical activity - this can even include doing the housework!

If you’re guilty of using any spare time you have to do housework, shopping or other tasks, make this year your resolve to set aside some time each week just for you. Ideally, remove yourself from distractions at home and ensure other family members know that this time out is non-negotiable. Why not use this time to try something new like a craft hobby, new language or singing? Learning a new skill or rediscovering your love for something is good for the soul, and can boost self-esteem.

FRIENDS ARE IMPORTANT
DON’T LET LIFE PASS YOU BY
Seeing each other for coffee or chatting on the phone is not a luxury - studies have proven that having a close circle of friends is good for your health. But the hectic pace of modern life, and the fact that many of us move around the country more frequently means it can be hard to stay in touch. Try and make time for that phone call or email, just to keep in touch and say ‘hi’. Perhaps you and your girlfriends can set aside one day in the year for a girly get-together - try and arrange this in good time so everyone can make the necessary arrangements.
Easier said than done, we know, but try and avoid getting into a rut, which can be demoralising and sap your energy. Procrastination is something we’re all guilty of, but grab the bull by the horns when you can - book that bargain weekend away with the kids, do something spontaneous from time to time, change your daily routine (even if it’s just walking home from school a different way), take up that offer of babysitting so you and your partner can go to the cinema and watch that film you’ve been dying to see... Sometimes it’s good to ‘feel the fear’ and do something that you’d normally say no to - attending a job interview, putting yourself forward as class rep or hitting the rollercoasters at Alton Towers! You’ll rarely regret these life experiences.
GIVE YOUR WARDROBE A WORK-OUT Hit the January sales and buy some well-considered, bargain purchases. Sale shopping can be fashion minefield, so before you hit the shops have a long hard think about what you really need to update your wardrobe. Well-cut, shape-flattering clothes have tranformative powers to start the year in and can even make you look like you’ve lost weight.
UPDATE YOUR MAKE-UP AND HAIR Like figure-flattering clothes, well-chosen make-up and a good hair-cut can make a huge difference, and don’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Many of us shy away from changing our look, but just a subtle revamp - say, cutting a wispy fringe into your hair, or swapping poker-straight locks for gently tousled - can ‘re-energise’ your look.
