EXPLORE WITH THE FAMILY Dartmoor is often described as being the true heart of Devon and so no visit to the county will be complete without spending a bit of time exploring this vast landscape. Of course you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get out and about with walking trails, cycling trails and outdoor activity centres all over the moor, but it isn’t all about being outside. Dartmoor has plenty of family friendly attractions to choose from including a zoo, museums, trips on steam trains and historical buildings like Buckland Abbey.

EXETER: A CITY WITH SO MUCH MORE With two train stations that are both connected to the main line, a reliable public transport network, easy access to the main roads and its compact nature, Exeter is an easy city to navigate however you choose to explore it. Why not journey on foot and experience one of the walking tours that are on offer throughout the city? The Red Coat guided tours meet in front of the Cathedral and are free to join, or if you want to travel on two wheels, there are a number of shared use paths and cycle trails around the city for you to explore. You can even explore the city from below ground if you like, the Underground Passages are an exciting labyrinth of medieval tunnels that can be found under the high street. EXPLORE A 22 MILE COASTLINE The English Riviera is the ideal dog friendly base for exploring South Devon’s beautiful coast and countryside. There are so many ways to get around without having to use your car with the stunning 22-mile coastline forming part of the South West Coast Path. Getting about couldn’t be easier with open-top double decker buses and tour services running along the seafront. Take a ride on the Torquay Land Train as it winds its way through the town, harbourside and Torre Abbey Museum’s historic grounds, or travel in a horse drawn carriage riding through the picturesque village of Cockington, with its thatched cottages and country park. EASY TO EXPLORE Although the number of things to see and do in Exeter may seem overwhelming, the city is split into four areas allowing you to explore to your heart’s content without missing out on anything. The city is relatively small, so it is easy to navigate around and you can very quickly get from one place to another. For those of you wanting to enjoy gentle walks or a spot of shopping, take advantage of the walking trails and the multitude of shops that can be found in the city. If you fancy something a bit more energetic, make sure to stop off in the quayside where you’ll find boat trips and organisations offering a range of watersports allowing you to explore the city from the water. Back in the early days of the city, Exeter’s position on the River Exe led to it becoming a popular place for trade and industry, these days, it offers picturesque views, amazing sea food and waters perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding.

In Chawleigh, to the north of Heywood wood and overlooking the River Taw valley stands the remains of a motte and bailey castle, known as Heywood Castle. Re-take the steps of the Normans and discover this medieval castle, made up of two parts: a raised mound, known as the motte, which would have had a stone or wooden tower, known as the keep on top... (the strongest and securest part of the castle) and an enclosed courtyard, protected by a ditch, overlooked by the motte, known as the bailey.

EXPLORE THE HISTORY OF THE MAYFLOWER STORY 2020 marks 400 years since the Mayflower, its passengers and crew set sail on their historic voyage from Plymouth to America in search of a new life and opportunities. Mayflower 400 is a national and international commemoration marking this significant anniversary, and Plymouth has an exciting programme with more than 100 events taking place throughout the year, marking the city’s role in the story. On 16th September 2020, the Mayflower Ceremony will take place on Plymouth Hoe. This major public commemoration event, free for all to attend, will tell the Mayflower story in a new way. NEWTON ABBOT For a great day out shopping take a trip to Newton Abbot. The historical market town and the newly revamped Market Walk is home to an eclectic selection of shops. Meandering through over 11 miles of serene and glorious mid-Devon countryside, the Grand Western Canal Country Park links Tiverton with the hamlet of Lowdswells, close to the Somerset border. One of the best ways to explore the canal and surrounding countryside is on the famous horse drawn barge which carries visitors peacefully along the waterway. The nature reserve is rich in wildlife which can be seen from bikes, wheelchairs, mobility buggies or by foot on the canal’s towpath which runs along the water’s edge. With so much on offer it’s hardly surprising that the Brixham Fish Market is world renowned and provides fresh caught fish and seafood to some of the nation’s best chefs and restaurants. The busy local fleet of fishing boats bring in £40million worth of fish every year and many of the best examples of these delicious ingredients stay right here in Devon for residents and visitors alike to enjoy in the county’s excellent restaurants. What seaside holiday would be complete without a classic English fish and chips? WALK AMONGST THE WILDLIFE

As we said, Dartmoor is one of the UK’s oldest sites and is home of the largest number of archaeological remains in Europe. You can discover this and a whole host of interesting historical remains and stories while travelling around the area. Dartmoor is full of ancient villages with beautiful traditional thatched cottages and welcoming country pubs, stone circles adding to the mystical atmosphere and with an abundance of museums and local legends, there is plenty to discover about the moor’s past.

There are more than just ponies to discover on Dartmoor. As well as being a National Park, Dartmoor also has vast areas that are designated as sites of scientific interest, so you’ll find all manner of animals and plant life in the region. The wildlife in the region is largely under the protection of the Devon Wildlife Trust who work hard to conserve the area and are a great resource when finding out more about the various creatures that live on and around the moor.

As well as being a source of great stories, Dartmoor is probably most well-known for its herds of wild ponies. There are fewer sights more iconic than the backdrop of the moor complete with a herd of ponies grazing together. These ponies have been part of the Dartmoor landscape for thousands of years, with some hoof prints having been dated back at least 3,000 years!

Depending where you are in Dartmoor, there are plenty of opportunities to spot everything from interesting flora and fauna, insects, birds and more. On the higher parts of the moor you’ll find a nature reserve where you’ll find butterflies, dragonflies and even cuckoos, while the waterways will give you chance to catch sight of salmon and in the Dart Valley you can easily spot birds of prey and smaller water birds.

Across the district, head to the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This area is rich with stories of fairyfolk, the most famous of which is the battle of the fairies and the pixies.

Legend tells of a dragon that lives on the extinct volcano near Killerton (a National Trust estate). At night, the dragon flies between two Iron Age hillforts - one at Cadbury Castle and the other at Dolbury Hill - guarding its treasure buried deep within both. The Dragon protects the residents of Fursdon House and locals tell of how, in 1643, the fiery beast scared away Parliamentarian forces from the area. www.visitdevon.co.uk

In a time when fairies ruled the Somerset side, they tried to cross the border to Mid Devon but were fought off by the resident pixies. Apparently the King of the Fairies, Oberon himself, was wounded in this battle. TEIGNMOUTH BEACHES If you’re looking for beaches to discover, the traditional seaside town of Teignmouth could be your ideal coastal escape. DARTMOUTH’S HISTORY On the banks of the River Dart is the fascinatingly historic town of Dartmouth. DISCOVER THE NATURAL WONDERS Don’t be fooled into thinking that Dartmoor is nothing but open moorland, there are loads of hidden gems for you to visit and explore. One of Dartmoor’s highlights is Lydford Gorge where you’ll find the White Lady Waterfall which stands at 90ft high. This is just one of the many beautiful natural wonders of Dartmoor. ENJOY EXETER’S PARKS AND GARDENS Exeter might be a city, but it is an incredibly green one. There are a number of parks and gardens that are open to the public and can be found all around the city. Stretching all the way from the marina town of Exmouth to the Dorset border is the Devon section of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site. The start of this protected coastline is marked by a 5 metre high Geo-needle at Orcombe Point, Exmouth, which is constructed from a mixture of rocks which can be found along the coastline. DAWLISH WARREN NATURE RESERVE AND BLACK SWANS On the western banks of the Exe Estuary mouth is the 1 ½ mile long sand spit of the Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve. The sand dunes, grasslands and mud flats of the reserve are home to an incredible array of wildlife and diverse selection of plants. Thousands of migrating birds visit the estuary to feed and spend the winter, making it one of the most important places for birds in the South West.

BIG fireworks Every year in August Plymouth’s waterfront is the scene of the jaw-dropping British Fireworks Championships. This spectacular two-day programme of displays start at dusk, but from early evening there’s also music, entertainment, stalls and a funfair on Plymouth Hoe.

BIG food festivals Devon’s a huge draw for foodies, so it’s unsurprising that some of the UK’s biggest and best annual food festivals happen here.
