This year as part of the celebrations, you can find out more about the Jurassic Coast by visiting the Sidmouth Museum.

The Jurassic Coast is a hugely diverse area beginning in the town of Exmouth, just a little further along the coast. It covers around 95 miles, stretching across East Devon and into Dorset. The iconic red cliffs in Sidmouth have been dated back to the Triassic period and you can trace the age of the cliffs depending on their colour. The Jurassic Coast covers three eras which also includes the cretaceous period.

There are plenty of ways to explore this incredible World Heritage Site, with walking trails across the coastline, many of which link up with the South West Coast Path. Throughout the Jurassic Coast there are a number of guided walks led by volunteers of the trust and as part of the Sidmouth Walking Festival. Pick up a Sidmouth Town Map where you can find maps of routes that include the Jurassic Coast or visit the Tourism Information Centre who can help you plan your journey. To explore the Jurassic Coast and the South West Coast Path, head to the Alma Bridge. Recently refurbished and reopened in 2020, the new bridge is located around 40 meters from the original which served the town since the 1900s. The bridge is the gateway to the South West Coast Path, England’s longest footpath running for around 630 miles and links Somerset to Devon and Dorset.

When exploring the Jurassic Coast, it is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times and to pay attention to any warning signs that are displayed. Sidmouth Folk Festival

One of the largest and oldest events in Sidmouth’s social calendar, the Folk Festival is a week-long celebration of music and dance that has taken place since the 1950s. It is one of the biggest highlights of the town’s calendar and was even gifted its own blue plaque which you can find when following the Blue Plaque Trail. The Festival includes workshops, live performances, crafts, games and children’s activities taking place at various venues across Sidmouth and ends with a spectacular Torchlight Procession.

Sidmouth SeaFest One of the most unique festivals in the South West, Sidmouth SeaFest is an annual community celebration of the coast. The festival promotes coastal living and highlights the region’s fishing heritage with music, food and workshops.

Sidmouth Regatta Taking place every August Bank Holiday, the Regatta brings spectators from all over the UK to enjoy the boat races and take part in the various marine activities that are hosted during the event.

Sidmouth Walking Festival Taking place in September, the Sidmouth Walking Festival is a great way to explore the wider region and see the beauty of the East Devon area first hand. Many of the guided walks take you around the East Devon Way, as well as the trails around Sidmouth. The festival runs across several days and there are a choice of walks available, so you can choose one that best suits your abilities. Visit the TIC to book your place on the walks.

Sidmouth Air Show Perhaps one of the most popular events in the town, Sidmouth Air Show is held over August Bank Holiday to mark the end of the Regatta and is the final big event of the summer. The air show features amazing aerial displays against the backdrop of the Jurassic Coast, with spectators assembling at the Esplanade. The Red Arrows among other air craft are usually in attendance, with previous displays including Spitfires, RAF Chinooks and parachute display teams.

Sidmouth International Jazz & Blues Festival Bringing the very best in jazz music to Sidmouth, the Sidmouth International Jazz and Blues Festival has been running for 65 years and features free street performances alongside ticketed headline acts all bringing the atmosphere and music of New Orleans to the streets of Sidmouth. This year’s festival will take place in June with venues at Blackmore Gardens, Connaught Gardens and Manor Pavilion Theatre.

There is always something new to learn with Sidmouth’s Science Festival. Taking place every October and incorporating Ada Lovelace Day, the festival particularly celebrates the achievements of women in science and there are activities suitable for all ages and abilities across the town. As well as workshops, the festival also plays host to eminent scientists who come to Sidmouth to host talks and with a different theme each year, there is always something new to discover.

Manor Pavilion Theatre Located in the heart of Sidmouth, this beautiful theatre is open all year around and hosts a wide variety of live performances. During the summer, you can find the UK’s last weekly Professional Summer Repertory Season, where 12 plays are performed in 12 weeks.

Sidbury Fair Dating back over 1000 years, Sidbury Fair is an annual event that takes place every September offering a week’s worth of events including the traditional Hot Pennies – this was something that the region’s landed gentry would do, where they would throw hot pennies towards the poorer villagers. These days, the pennies are only warmed, not hot and the practice is much less malicious!

Kennaway House Built in 1805, Kennaway House is a handsome Regency manor house located in the heart of Sidmouth where a host of exhibitions and events are held throughout the year. With events such as discos, food festivals and more, there is always something to do here.

Axevale is a quiet, family park overlooking the delightful Axe valley. Town, beach, footpaths, birdwatching, attractions and pubs all within walking distance. All caravans have a shower, toilet, fridge, TV and wi-fi. The park has a shop, laundry and children’s playground.

Sidmouth’s Radway Cinema Proudly showing films since 1928, the Radway Cinema was originally opened as a theatre and featured a ceiling made from a patterned press tin. When Hollywood made the move from silent movies to talkies, the Radway was converted into a full time cinema and now shows a range of screenings and National Theatre productions.

Visiting by coach There are mainline coach companies offering trips to Devon, stopping in major towns and cities in the county with connections to bring you on to Sidmouth. Exeter is the nearest city and many national companies stop here. There are several buses and taxis running to Sidmouth from outside Exeter’s coach station. travelling Getting to Sidmouth Sidmouth is located in East Devon in the South West of England. Devon is well served by trains and national coach services from all over the country with some very picturesque routes. Sidmouth is just 10 miles from J30 of the M5 (follow A3052) and 9 miles from Honiton (follow A375 and if you’re using a SatNav, use the postcode EX10 8XR and this will bring you to the town centre).

There are regular national train services to Exeter Central, Exeter St Davids and Honiton, all of which are within half an hour’s drive of Sidmouth. From the station, you can hire cars or use public transport/ taxis to continue on to Sidmouth.

Sidbury Did you know that Sidbury is often rated as Britain’s Best Kept Village? If you want to experience life in a picture perfect village with postcard ready cottages and gardens, then Sidbury is a must visit location. It is just 3.6 miles from Sidmouth town centre and is part of the Sid Valley.

The Byes, one of the premier green spaces in the Sidmouth area begins in the small village of Sidford which neighbours the town. It is somewhere that is loved by walkers and is home to some popular pubs and a selection of quaint shops.

Seaton

Honiton

Full of family friendly attractions, including Seaton Tramway, Seaton Jurassic and Seaton Wetlands, Seaton is a pretty town with plenty of things to see and do. It is located within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and holds World Heritage status.

Very little has changed in Honiton over the years and those interested in history will love finding out more about the town’s involvement in the lace industry at the Allhallows Museum which features several lace making demonstrations, as well as exhibits. Honiton lace was so well known for its quality that it was even used to make Queen Victoria’s wedding dress.

Ottery St Mary If you want to experience authentic West Country traditions, Ottery St Mary is the place to be. In the summer months you can watch the residents re-enact the banishing of the local pixies during Pixie Day, while in November, there is the famous Tar Barrel Rolling. Held on Bonfire Night, this event sees locals run through the high street with flaming tar barrels in a torch lit procession.
