The City of Wells
Illuminated Carnival
Oh Yey! Oh Yey! Oh Yey! Ladies and Gentlemen tonight we are celebrating her Majesty the Queen, on her jubilee, in this year of our Lord 2012. 60 glorious years as our Monarch and Wells City Carnival Committee are delighted in dedicating this year Carnival Parade in Her Majesty’s Honour. And also with the Olympics being held earlier this year in London, so many local volunteers from all over Somerset helped in making these games the success it was, we have the relay Olympic torch bearers from all over Somerset here tonight to join in with the Carnival so give them a cheer as they walk by, also we have Wells City Rugby Club who were successful in winning the National Senior Vase Cup at Twickenham. So look out for them in the open top bus with the trophy. We also have our Carnival Clubs who have this year without the Glastonbury Festival (where they work for raising much needed funds), who are putting on a fantastic show here in Wells tonight for you all to enjoy, so once again whether you have already given a donation to our Carnival Queens who have been busy throughout the summer seeking sponsorship to ride in the Queen Coach and if you can put your donations in the many collecting floats and tins that our helpers are walking around the route we will be very grateful as always, we encourage you to purchase programmes as this is a special souvenir to keep. May I personally thank the teams of Marshals from the other towns from around the county for the help at our Carnival these are tremendous people who give up their own time for the greater Good. Thank you very much for your attendance have a great time Carnivals here in the Heart of Somerset make us all very proud to be British. God Save the Queen.
Mr Martin Coppell Chairman Wells City Carnival Ltd
Message from our President
Another year has passed and what a year. We have celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics were a resounding success. We, in Wells, hope to emulate that success by producing one of the finest carnivals we have seen in a long time. The lessons we have learned by being involved with the Olympic torch and the Olympics have given us the impedus needed to get us going again. We have had a couple of wet years and are hoping we can recapture the spirit of carnival in Wells by returning to the high street again and getting you, the public, to contribute to our funds to enable us to continue. Please give generously to the many collectors who will pass by on the night and be generous with your applause to the participants. Enjoy the night and please stay safe around the large carts. Maurice Day (Hon.President)

Globe Carnival Club Globe Carnival Club had arguably their most successful year in 2011 with Elf Made, winning a prestigious county cup for their efforts. So this year was always going to be a hard act to follow. They were always going to do a Vegas cart, after all Las Vegas has always been considered the entertainment capital of the world with its Casino’s, Hotels Gambling and its links with organized crime so plenty of scope to work with. For a long time the club flirted with the idea of the basing this years entry around the theme of the Flintstones movie “Viva Rock Vegas”. However, they tried but could not find a formula that enthused the membership, big problem with only weeks to go before Carnival! Then finally, some inspiration, they decided to portray the seedier side of Vegas, The city has always had a tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment and the Hard Rock Festival held in September reinforces it’s title of “Sin City”. So we have the Gambling, the showgirls but now it is blended with a little bit of Rock, with flamboyant stage outfits and white and black face make up. We hope it’s a heady cocktail for you to enjoy. Rock on! The Globe are now the only Wells club to meet and build close to the City, The club are always on the lookout for new members to keep the Spirit of Carnival and the Wells Carnival Tradition going. Prospective new members should give Sue Barber a ring on 01761 418320 and come down and meet us at Wells football club every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month Entry Class, Feature Number of Years in Carnival: 44 years, Headquarters: Wells Football Club, President: Mr Steve Scott Chairman: Ali Hibberd (Jan – Aug) Secretary: Sue Barber Treasurer: Martyn O’Neill Cart Captain: Jon Friend Road Crew Captain: Ben Golden Idea and designer: Graham Winter Engineers: Tony Grimstead, Jay Phillips, Tom Vailes, Ivor Edwards, Frank Delaney, Chris Gardiner Electricians: Ben Golden, Bob Oatley, Mike O’Neill, Artwork: Bill Baker, Mark Baker, Mike Barber and team, Music: Paradise City, Rock of Ages soundtrack Choreography: Tan Lintell assisted by Tracy Phipps and Hayley Winter Costumes: Tim Durbin , Eira Powell , Pauline Williams , Carol Frew, Nicki Phipps and Lucy Norton

Mendip Vale Carnival Club
As the cold November winter nights draw in, Mendip Vale Carnival Club are hoping to bring a touch of the 70’s disco vibe to the streets of wells tonight with their carnival float entitled “Dancin‘ in November”. It depicts a disco nightclub, with all the disco colours, costumes and shapes you’d expect to find in that era. 2012 is Mendip vales 47th year in carnival, and like so many clubs in the years procession, the absence of the Glastonbury festival and the terrible weather during the summer has cost them valuable pounds in fundraising. Cart captain tom Sheppard says, “Like most clubs in the Mid-Somerset area, we depend on the Glastonbury festival to help us along the way, so we’ve missed that in 2012, also with the rain over the summer there hasn’t been the outdoor events around this year for us to raise all the funds needed. This years cart is going well in the building sense but it is really a struggle to keep the costs down, as we don’t have the budget this year that we normally would.” Over the years there have been various new rules and regulations that put pressure on all the clubs to keep the tradition alive. The cost of putting a carnival float on the road rises each year and each year the running costs, mainly fuel increases. so the mountain does get
harder to climb every year. Club chairman Dan Fowler says, “With new procedures being implemented each year regarding building and moving the carts over the season, carnival does get harder and requires more work and commitment, but like most clubs Mendip vale has a good team of people wanting to achieve better each year, so I am pleased that the enthusiasm is always still there in our club.” Mendip vale is very lucky they have a large team of helpers and vice presidents who lend a hand particularly at this time of the year to ensure they get their disco show on the road. Gorgons Carnival Club This year is our 40th Anniversary, unfortunately this year due to lack of funds the club have decided to celebrate it by bringing out a walking entry in the same theme as the club was formed 40 years ago by the founder members Mike Reed who was dressed as Perseus Mike Ford, Sue Ford & Mo Bamford who dressed as the 3 Gorgons. The costumes were made by Peggy Reed. The following year the Club became the Gorgons Carnival Club with their 1st mounted entry Solar Myth. The Gorgons are proud of the pact they still have 3 of the 4 founder members in the club and that the 4th cheers the Gorgons on every year from the crowd at Burnham-On-Sea carnival. As there are more people than the original 4 walking this year the club has opened up the theme to cover other mythological creatures, Gods & Goddess. The club hope this will be a fitting tribute to the 4 founder members and everyone else who has ever been part of the Gorgons carnival club. The 1st Chairman of the Carnival cCub was Ivor Reed and 40 years on this roll is taken by his Grandson Anthony Reed, and the 1st Secretary was Peggy Reed and this position is now held by her Granddaughter Shelly Ford. I’m sure Peggy and Ivor would be proud of the fact that their family involved heavy in the club. The Carnival Club offer these services as part of their fundraising, Event Stewarding, Outside Bars and Helium Balloon Decoration for any event. We would like to say a Big Thank you to everyone at The Venue for their support and allowing us to use The Venue as our Headquarters once again, Robert Uphill from Uphill & Sons for loaning us a tractor once more for our entry. But most of all we would like to thank all of our Members & Supported for sticking with us though thick and thin.

Olympics 2012 Wells carnival is showing its support to the games makers and torch bearers from this year’s Olympics. Several of whom will be in the parade and you are asked to give them a huge cheer and round of applause to recognize their unselfish dedication and contribution to the 2012 olympics held at weymouth and london. We will be eternally thankful for the part they played in not only helping put on a great show but for the legacy to sport in this country that will be around for many years to come.
