BUTLEIGH PRIMARY SCHOOL MEET MARATHON RUNNER
On Monday the 17th November the children at Butleigh Primary School were amazed by the story of a local man from Westhay called Dave Hall. Dave Hall is an experienced marathon runner who ran the length of the UK (1000 miles in just over 40 days) sleeping in a replica shack each night. The shack was designed to replicate the homes in Sierra Leone in which up to
10 people often live, made from corrugated iron, old newspaper and cardboard. Dave ran for the charity Home Leone and hopes to raise enough money to build new 40 homes in Sierra Leone. He successfully completed his run on the 26th September and has raised a massive £94,000 for the Charity. The children were amazed by his story and fascinated by the shack he had lived in.

THE GUNPOWDER PLOT Pupils at Baltonsborough Primary School had a wonderful day on November the 5th, led by new teacher Ben Travitzky. The children learned about the Gunpowder Plot in their classes. They then spent the rest of the day in their cross age group teams, all named after streets in Baltonsborough. Each team made a Guy, which were then judged by Headteacher Michelle Heap, and Chair of the Governing Body Anne Moody. The winning guy was first on the bonfire in the afternoon, followed by the other Guys. The children all ate hotdogs, and returned into Camelot (their new learning space) to share what they had learned during the day. Mrs Heap said she was, “Delighted by the energy and enthusiasm of all of the teachers to ensure that the new curriculum is delivered in the most creative way.”

EXPERIENTIAL CURRICULUM AT ST CUTHBERT’S St Cuthbert’s C of E Infants have had a busy Autumn term with their exciting experiential curriculum. Bristol Zoo visits, Superhero days, fund raising for Breast Cancer Awareness. Plus, watching unique one off showings of the carnival, and they have been involved in Wells town planning, learnt from the Fire Brigade fire’s bespoke safety talks and are currently about to host a group of local Veterans for a special ‘thank you’ tea after students attended the Sunday Church memorial service and were moved to do something extra. In the lead up until Christmas the school rehearses their play (told from the eyes of the animals) and they are about to get involved in some ‘method’ acting by meeting the real cast, of real sheep and real donkeys. At St Cuthbert’s we want learning to matter, to mean something, to be about making memories that last a lifetime. Who would forget the day a superhero came to their school, or the moment they got to hold a cockroach? Learning is deeper when we experience it, when we enjoy it, so this is how we teach at St Cuthbert’s; because of this inspiring and memorable way of teaching the learning and progress of our children is excellent.
CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR AT ELMHURST JUNIOR SCHOOL Saturday 13th December 2.00pm – 4.30pm Why not pop along and get into the spirit of Christmas. Lots of craft stalls with homemade gifts and foods. Large raffle and tombola stalls. There is even a visit from Santa in his Grotto. Then why not join the choir with festive carols from 4.00pm to end the celebrations. Free admission, fun for the whole family.

CHINESE HEADTEACHER VISITS ASHCOTT SCHOOL
The children at Ashcott Primary School had an important visitor who travelled all the way from their link school in Yueyang Province, China! Ms Ruan Huiling, Principal at Yueyang Tower Primary School in China, spent two days at Ashcott School learning about education in Britain as well as teaching the children about the traditions and culture in China. Ms Ruan is Principal at a very large primary school in Yueyang with around 2500 pupils of primary age and her wealth of experience was shared with the teaching staff as she learned about the different teaching strategies employed by teachers here in Somerset.
Ms Ruan’s visit was a great opportunity for the Ashcott children to ask questions and share their learning about China with her. The children were able to try out some of their Mandarin which they have been learning as part of the mandarin project set up by Adrian Ash at Strode College. Members of the Ashcott School Press Club had the chance to interview Ms Ruan for the school newspaper too. Ms Ruan also took part in a SKYPE meeting between the Ashcott Global Group and some children from Yueyang Tower, enabling the children to see and talk to their friends in China.
Last year Mrs Serena Shore, Senior Teacher at Ashcott School visited Yueyang Tower Primary School and brought back many ideas and fond memories of her experiences at the school. She was able to share teaching strategies with her Chinese colleagues during her visit and Ms Ruan reported that they had already seen improvements in the Chinese children’s learning as a direct result of the Chinese teachers adopting some of Mrs Shore’s teaching methods.
There is a strong international aspect to the school’s curriculum and, as a result, the school has held the International School’s Award for the past 14 years, for its work in promoting global awareness and citizenship. Many other schools in the area have also hosted visitors this week as part of the Yueyang-Somerset Partnership and the links continue to go from strength to strength for the benefit of the children in our local community.

PANTO SEASON
It might be hard to believe, but it’s nearly time to dust down your Christmas decorations and start planning your festive celebrations. There’s no better way to get your family into the holiday spirit than by planning a trip to see a pantomime. If your kids haven’t yet experienced the magic of these performances, they’re in for a real treat. Love it or hate it (and most people seem to fall into one of those camps), the cross-dressing, innuendo-fuelled, custard pie frenzy of pantomime is as much a part of a traditional British Christmas as sprouts and the Queen’s speech...
“Oh yes it is.”

PARENT
PAGES BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY TO AVOID CHILDHOOD OBESITY As time-starved people continue to work longer and longer hours, increasing the chances that the family won’t eat together during the day at all, let alone for both the first and last meals, a new study suggests it has never been more important to ensure that adults and kids sit down to break bread in the same place, at the same time. There are, of course, several factors that need to be taken into account, although they all suggest that a shared meal is much better for the family unity as a whole. In addition to the obvious forming of bonds and display of interest in one another that usually help make a happy homestead, breakfasts made by an adult are much more likely to be nutritious and good for the youngster, which probably won’t shock anyone blessed with a sugar-addicted adolescent. Clearly, then, there’s plenty parents can take away from this, and interestingly it all comes down to some traditional family values: the importance of shared meal times, and of course the need for kids to get out and play whenever and wherever
possible, rather than sit inside. It’s worth noting that none of the children involved in the study were from the UK, but given the difference in expected working week between people in Britain and the eight European countries involved in the study, by rights the findings should resonate more here than anywhere else.
BE MONEY-WISE THIS CHRISTMAS
Let’s face it, Christmas can be very tough on your bank balance and we can all be tempted to rely on our credit cards to help see us through the festive season. However, interest can quickly escalate if we are not prompt in paying back the money, which can leave many of us in mountains of debt. If you are concerned about your finances this Christmas, you are not alone. According to research by supermarket chain ASDA last year, one in six parents were not sure how they’d be paying for Christmas. Credit cards can provide handy access to credit when needed, though they should always be used responsibly, in order to avoid running into difficulties. With recent research from the British Bankers’ Association revealing that the nation’s average monthly credit card spending reached £7.1 billion in 2012, Asda Money offers tips on how consumers can use their credit cards responsibly this Christmas. 1. Make payments on time In order to avoid penalties and keep your credit card charges down you should ensure that you make at least the minimum payment due each month. Setting up a Direct Debit to cover either the minimum payment or the full amount can help make sure you never forget to pay. Credit card companies may charge you more interest if you only make the minimum payments. 2. Make use of interest free periods At Christmas having the option to spread your payments out over several weeks or months can really help. Most cards have interest free periods for purchases. This means that, as long as you pay your balance in full by the due date each month, you shouldn’t be charged any interest. 3. Choose the right card for you There are many cards on the market and there are also many reasons for people to choose a particular credit card. Some are tempted by reward schemes or cash-back but if you tend to have a balance outstanding at the end of each month, a card with a lower interest rate might be the best option. The best card for you will depend on your spending habits and preferences. 4. Consider a balance transfer Most credit cards allow you to transfer an existing balance from another card, often at preferential interest rates which
may be as low as zero per cent for a given period. There is usually a fee to pay but you may still be able to save money in the long run. Any balance transfer not paid in full at the end of the promotional period will be charged the normal balance transfer rate which may be fairly high. 5. Take advantage of cash back offers Some credit cards will offer cash back on your purchases, helping you earn as you spend. Depending on the provider cash back can apply to all your spending, or be limited to specific stores or items. Check the details of each offer carefully to be sure you are getting the right deal for you.

WHY SHOP LOCALLY? It is very important that we support our high street traders by doing as much of our shopping as we possibly can locally. A lot of independent local traders and their businesses are beginning to die out, resulting in a large number of high street shops gradually closing down and being left boarded- up. By shopping locally you can make a difference to the livelihood of the traders and to the landscape of your local high street or town. Shopping locally is one of the best ways to build a stronger, more prosperous community. There are many reasons to support local, independent businesses in Your Community, including:
1. PROTECT LOCAL CHARACTERS AND PROSPERITY
Your Community is unlike any other place in the world. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help maintain local diversity and distinctive culture.
2. COMMUNITY WELL-BEING
Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and by contributing more to local causes.
3. LOCAL DECISION MAKING
Local ownership means that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.
4. KEEPING ÂŁ IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY
Pounds spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as pounds spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more services through investment in neighborhood improvements and promoting community development.
5. JOB AND WAGES
Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits.
7. PUBLIC BENEFITS AND COSTS
Local stores in town centres require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services.
8. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centres-which in turn are essential to reducing vehicle use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.
9. COMPETITION
A marketplace of hundreds or thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.
10. PRODUCT DIVERSITY
A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

GETTING CHILDREN THROUGH

THE BITTER WINTER MONTHS It can be slightly unpleasant sending the kids out to school every morning, even at the best of times. When it is below freezing outside, however, there are certain measures you need to take to ensure their health and safety. Of course, you can’t let the cold stand in the way of their education, and old timers would probably say it does them some good, but there are a few things you can do to make life just a little bit easier.
TRAVEL SAFE
One of the biggest enhanced dangers that the winter chill brings is associated with travelling. Whether you are walking or driving the kids to school, you need to take certain precautions. You should always make sure that your car is weather-ready. This includes the basics - ice scrapers, de-icer and windscreen wash fluid - but you should also add to that list: a spade, rugs, flashlights, water, food (non-perishable) and a first-aid kit.
HAVE THE HOUSE WARM FOR WHEN THEY GET HOME
Quite simply, the best part of any cold winters day (unless of course there is snow to play in) is getting home, back into the warmth. To brighten your kids’ spirits, it is always a good idea to have the home ready for them when they return from a long, cold day at school.
SHOW THEM THE JOYS OF WINTER
Parents too can be guilty of allowing the winter blues to take hold. It is crucial that you show your children the positive sides of winter - and there are many. Take them ice skating, to a great pantomime, go for walks in the country and eat in cosy pubs with big, welcoming fires. When the cold becomes too much, plan trips to the cinema and the shopping mall, bowling alley and games arcades. By focusing on the positive aspects of winter, you will not only keep your own winter blues at bay, but also help to generate a positive mindset within your children. This will keep them active and energetic all year round. It may be a little bit tiring for you, but it will certainly keep you fit.
KEEP SAFE THIS WINTER LEARNING FROM THE INSIDE OUT Explorium, the Creative Learning Centre near Street, will be holding a series of open days in 2015 for parents or educators interested in finding out more about their innovative supplementary learning practice. Now entering its second year, Explorium has already gained a reputation for encouraging all children to excel, with their young writers being published and winning awards, their work being broadcast on local radio, and young film makers receiving positive accolades from award winning directors. “We start by finding out what children are passionate about, where their strengths lie and what talents they have. So they are learning, as we call it, from the inside out. Then we help them overcome obstacles that stand in their way to achieving excellence,” says Julia Black, Explorium’s founder. Their inside out approach seems to be a hit with parents, as much as with the children. ‘Love it! Child-centred and based on children’s interests and talents - I think it’s fabulous and encourages children to blossom. My son is full of enthusiasm when I collect him and is hugely motivated,” says Holly, mother of seven year old Joseph, who attends after school. If you are interested in finding out about Explorium’s open days please email info@explorium.co.uk.

MAKE A CHANGE
FOR 2015 Here’s a New Year’s resolution anyone can keep: Resolve not to make any more New Year’s resolutions. Now, wasn’t that easy? If you’re trying to quit smoking, find a new job, get fit or shed some excess pounds, abandoning New Year’s resolutions won’t get you off the hook. But by setting more realistic goals for yourself and not limiting yourself to a once-a-year, do-or-die, all-out assault, you may find that the finish line isn’t so far away after all.
EXERCISE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE PAINFUL! Don’t make the mistake of thinking exercise has to be full-throttle and that to make a difference you have to pound the treadmill till you hurt all over. Be honest with yourself - if you really hate going to the gym - find an alternative. Remember you should aim to fit in just 30 minutes a day of some kind of physical activity - this can even include doing the housework!
DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT JUST FOR YOU
If you’re guilty of using any spare time you have to do housework, shopping or other tasks, make this year your resolve to set aside some time each week just for you. Ideally, remove yourself from distractions at home and ensure other family members know that this time out is non-negotiable. Why not use this time to try something new like a craft hobby, new language or singing? Learning a new skill or rediscovering your love for something is good for the soul, and can boost self-esteem.
FRIENDS ARE IMPORTANT
Seeing each other for coffee or chatting on the phone is not a luxury - studies have proven that having a close circle of friends is good for your health. But the hectic pace of modern life, and the fact that many of us move around the country more frequently means it can be hard to stay in touch. Try and make time for that

phone call or email, just to keep in touch and say ‘hi’. Perhaps you and your girlfriends can set aside one day in the year for a girly get-together - try and arrange this in good time so everyone can make the necessary arrangements.
GIVE YOUR WARDROBE A WORK-OUT
Hit the January sales and buy some well-considered, bargain purchases. Sale shopping can be fashion minefield, so before you hit the shops have a long hard think about what you really need to update your wardrobe. Well-cut, shape-flattering clothes have tranformative powers to start the year in and can even make you look like you’ve lost weight.
UPDATE YOUR MAKE-UP AND HAIR
Like figure-flattering clothes, well-chosen make-up and a good hair-cut can make a huge difference, and don’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Many of us shy away from changing our look, but just a subtle revamp - say, cutting a wispy fringe into your hair, or swapping poker-straight locks for gently tousled - can ‘re-energise’ your look.
DON’T LET LIFE PASS YOU BY
Easier said than done, we know, but try and avoid getting into a rut, which can be demoralising and sap your energy. Procrastination is something we’re all guilty of, but grab the bull by the horns when you can - book that bargain weekend away with the kids, do something spontaneous from time to time, change your daily routine (even if it’s just walking home from school a different way), take up that offer of babysitting so you and your partner can go to the cinema and watch that film you’ve been dying to see... Sometimes it’s good to ‘feel the fear’ and do something that you’d normally say no to - attending a job interview, putting yourself forward as class rep or hitting the rollercoasters at Alton Towers! You’ll rarely regret these life experiences.

THE HISTORY OF
THE STOCKING According to folklore, the tradition of the Christmas Stocking dates back to the days of a kindly nobleman whose wife had died of an illness leaving him and his three daughters in despair. After losing all his money in useless and bad inventions the family had to move into a peasant’s cottage, where the daughters did their own cooking, sewing and cleaning. When it came time for the daughters to marry, the father became even more depressed as his daughters could not marry without dowries - money and property given to the new husband’s family. One night after the daughters had washed out their clothing they hung their stockings over the fireplace to dry. That night Saint Nicholas, knowing the despair of the father, stopped by the nobleman’s house. Looking in the window Saint Nicholas saw the family had gone to bed. He also noticed the daughters’ stockings.

Inspiring the HOPE of our future
Inspiration struck Saint Nicholas and he took three small bags of gold from his pouch and threw them one by one down the chimney and they landed in the stockings. The next morning when the daughters awoke they found their stockings contained enough gold for them to get married. The nobleman was able to see his three daughters marry and he lived a long and happy life. Children all over the world continue the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings. In some countries children have similar customs, in France the children place their shoes by the fireplace, a tradition dating back to when children wore wooden peasant shoes. In Holland the children fill their shoes with hay and a carrot for the horse of Sintirklass. In Hungary children shine their shoes before putting them near the door or a window sill. Italian children leave their shoes out the night before Epiphany, January 5, for La Befana the good witch. And in Puerto Rico children put greens and flowers in small boxes and place them outside the front door.
We don’t hold Open Days. Because we are confident you will be impressed with our school and what we can offer your child, at any time. Visit us at a time which suits you.
