Welcome to The Contents Lights Switch On Westfield Warbler 45 Christmas Norwest Bowls As always, there is good and not so good news to report Firstly, congratulations to the Westfield Allotments & Gardening Society on their ‘Outstanding’ award for their ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ entry, a great achievement at their first attempt. The allotments are a real credit to Westfield, not only with the flowers, fruit and veg that they grow, but also the support they give to disabled people using the raised flower beds. It means that gardening is open to all, which is why we have a waiting list to join and take on an allotment. Well done, too, to the Fosse Way House, who received a ‘Thriving’ award from the same body for their work in the community. The students have diligently attended to one of the planters in Westfield and it is lovely to see their efforts blooming. The Parish Council has also received an award, ‘Quality’ status from the Local Council Award Scheme. This wouldn’t have been possible without the work done by Lesley, Tracey and Emily, the ‘backroom’ team who provide a quietly efficient service for us. Many thanks from all councillors and I’m sure everyone who works with them. Less good news is the spate of vandalism over the summer, particularly around the play and park areas. This does cost us all money, either because we have to directly pay for repairs, but also with increased insurance premiums when we claim for costly value replacements. We are working with Police to discourage and stop this and thanks to them for their support. And of course the continual issue of traffic and parking, whether it is anti-social drivers around our schools, or the seemingly endless queues as a result of the work being done in Radstock. I wish I could say we had an answer and that we can wave a magic wand. Sadly that isn’t the case, but we will keep pushing for improvements that make things easier for residents. As this is the last newsletter of the year, I hope you all have a peaceful Christmas and New Year. Please come along to the Christmas lights switch-on as well, it promises to be an enjoyable evening !

Christmas Lights Switch On The Rev. Jan Tate of Trinity Methodist Church, Westfield has kindly offered to say a few words at the occasion, which will remind us of the true spirit of Christmas. She is new to the area, so let us show her what an engaging community we are in Westfield.

With Christmas just a few weeks away, we are delighted to report that our annual Christmas Tree lights switch on event will take place again this year on Thursday November 26th, starting at 6:30pm. We are really happy to report that Father Christmas has taken some time out of his busy schedule to come along to the event again and give small presents free of charge to the children who want to come to see him.

Also at the event will be some mulled wine or soft drinks and mince pies to help keep us warm. An enormous thank you has to go to Tony Denning who will be making sure all the electrical systems are in place for the event – no pressure Tony!! Thank you to all the volunteers that will help the evening go along smoothly.

The Westfield Ladies’ Choir will entertain us with their beautiful renditions of some very popular Christmas Carols – of course you are more than welcome to join in. The more voices the merrier on this festive occasion. They will be accompanied with some gusto by the Midsomer Norton Silver Band.

We really look forward to seeing you at this event to get us all into the festive spirit.

Norwest Bowls

Winter is upon us! Christmas will soon be here and gone and then the New Year will be on us with all its attendant resolutions. So what are you going to put on your New Year resolution list? A healthier lifestyle with a bit more exercise, less time in front the telly, getting out and making more friends? Well, just maybe, I have the answer. How about taking up lawn bowls? Yes, I know, I can hear you saying it already and you’re wrong! It isn’t only for old people and it certainly isn’t boring. The image of old people in white clothes with funny hats has certainly done the sport no good, however, I wonder if the image has been generated to keep the young people out, by the older members who never wanted change. These days the sport has a much enlightened attitude and this is evident when you see all the young players competing regularly at local clubs as well as at County level and in the National Bowls Championships featured on TV. Now, I can tell you’re interested but what can you do about it? Well at Norwest Bowls Club we welcome new members. We don’t expect you to be a member for years before you can take part in any competition games. Norwest is a friendly club and we welcome all abilities and all types of bowlers. Whether you want a relaxed atmosphere with no pressure or you would like to scale the heights of County and National bowls, Norwest is a great place to start out on your 2016 New Year’s resolution! The season runs from April until September but that

doesn’t mean the club shuts down during the winter months. Oh, no! We have lots of social evenings, a Friday night fun Fish and Chip skittle league, the club house is home to three teams in the local skittle league and two teams in the cribbage league. So! Have I got you interested? If so you can give me a ring on 01761 479310 or pop in and see us in the New Year when we have a week of open evenings at the start of the new season. We at Norwest hope you have a wonderful Christmas, a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in April if not before.

Big Local. Radstock & Westfield.

How to make the most of £1million You have probably read in the press and on social media that Radstock and Westfield has been awarded a mega £1 million to be spent in the local area but what does this mean in practice and how can you benefit from this amazing fund? Big Local is the first major initiative of Local Trust, which was set up to enable residents to make their communities and their areas even better places in which to live. Big Local Trust was established by Local Trust and the Big Lottery Fund with a National Lottery grant of £196,873,499. The grant is an endowment, which has to be spent by December 2026. So far the fund has been used to support 150 communities in England and the Radstock and Westfield Big Local was one of the first.

mobility and lifelong learning so the Big Local team is now working to develop projects for delivery based on these needs. The money is not given in a single lump sum; it is drawn down over the next ten years. Big Local has chosen Somer Valley FM to coordinate the communications and Westfield Parish Council to handle the finances, they are both known as Locally Trusted Organisations. As well as large projects Big Local has also devised a way in which local residents can help make improvements to our local communities directly. That chance is coming up again soon, it is the third Radstock and Westfield Big Local Dragons’ Den which is taking place on Friday 20th November 2015, 7pm at Prattens Club in Westfield. If you haven’t been to a Dragons’ Den event before it is a fantastic community event: an opportunity to find out about the huge variety of enterprises and voluntary projects taking place right on your doorstep.

So where is that one million pounds you might ask? The Big Local working group in Radstock and Westfield worked very hard through 2014 to consult the communities on what was needed and what was important about this area. They used the information that was gathered to create a Local Plan for spending the Gethin, Director food and music as well SCLocal HEARING TheRichard evening includes wonderful £1 million fund. Dragons’ Den was created to inspire, engage, stimulate and entertain local residents. Having displayed their pitch at a table where you can chat to applicants about their project, they will pitch to you, the audience, for 90 seconds and then be quizzed by a panel of local experts. At the end of the evening it is

up to you, the public, to vote and decide on the projects that you would like to see funded. The first two Dragons’ Den events funded 20 projects including a new tent for Radstock Scouts to use at their summer jamboree and song sheets for the Westfield Ladies Choir. Big Local is also looking to give awards that contribute to larger projects which cost more than £500 and to support ideas which may need some initial funding to get the ball rolling, such as for commissioning research. Big Local is always happy to welcome new volunteers and ideas. You can find out more about Big Local’s priorities for Radstock and Westfield as well as checking out the calendar of events and even getting involved yourself by visiting the website: www.radstockwestfield.org.uk

Awards given for ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’

The certificate presented by Cllr Robin Moss (far right) to Juliette Millard (Treasurer of WAGS) and Martin Bates (Chairman of WAGS) with the Westfield Allotmenteers.

Two organisations in Westfield have been taking part in the “It’s Your Neighbourhood” campaign, which is run by the Royal Horticultural Society. Those organisations are Westfield Allotment and Garden Society (WAGS) and Fosseway School.

piece of work and WAGS have been considered ‘outstanding’ in their endeavours.

It’s Your Neighbourhood is a grassroots community gardening campaign, supporting local groups to clean up and ‘green up’ their local environment and is part of Britain in Bloom. Any group can take part, as long as it is volunteer led and involves hands on community gardening. The area that they are working on can be any part of their community, whether that’s the street they live in, or a small patch of communal land.

Presenting the certificate, Chair of the Parish Council Robin Moss said, “Here at the Parish Council we are very proud of the work done by WAGS and that our allotments are a real credit to the people using them as well as the wider Westfield community. The model of allowing those who know to run the service is one that clearly works.”

During the campaign the organisations that take part are visited by representatives from the RHS, who give feedback and advice on the schemes that they are undertaking. We are delighted to announce that both groups have been awarded commendations for their work. Fosse Way School have been given the commendation for a ‘thriving’ community

Westfield Parish Council would like to congratulate both groups on their work in the community.

Chair of WAGS, Martin Bates commented, “I am very proud of all the allotmenteers including those with disabilities. Everyone has pulled their weight this year and the results are exceptional”. If anyone is interested in entering the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ for 2016 there will be more information available on https://www. rhs.org.uk/communities/campaigns/it-s-yourneighbourhood shortly.

Fosse Way Students Add a Little Colour to Westfield On Monday 2nd November students from Fosse Way School in Westfield were presented with an award by the National Horticultural Society in recognition of the attractive floral displays they have created the centre of Westfield. The students concerned all attend Fosse Way House, the outstanding special school’s residential provision that offers up to eleven young people a twenty four hour curriculum. The facility nurtures and develops students’ social, communication and independence skills through a carefully devised programme of activities.

by the students that a plaque has since been affixed to the planter in recognition of their contribution. Now the students’ gardening venture has won the approval of the National Horticultural Society through their ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ community gardening campaign. A certificate was presented to the students and Fosse Way House manager Jason Towells to mark their achievement. The initiative supports the efforts of volunteer community groups throughout the country in ‘greening up’ their local environment.

The focus for the students’ blossoming horticultural skills has been a planter beneath the hanging basket tree positioned on Wesley Avenue. Students from Fosse Way House first began tending their adopted planter in the autumn of 2014. Since then the enthusiastic team has diligently maintained the display by planting a variety of flowering plants including geraniums, petunias and begonias, all provided by Westfield Parish Council. So impressed has the council been

Fosse Way’s team of budding gardeners includes Melissa Gray, Lewis Stallard, Kieron Clark, Doug Woolway, Elliot Rippington, Josh Thomson and Ryan Thompson. Jason Towells, who has supported the students throughout, commented: “All the students have enjoyed contributing to the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ project in Westfield and take great pride in the planter they have helped to create. We look forward to participating in more projects like this in the local community.”

10

Grants 2015

This year the Parish Council was delighted to receive 15 applications to its Grants fund of around ÂŁ16,000. All the applications were carefully considered by a specifically-appointed Grants Committee which considered the reasons for the grant and the ways in which each application met the criteria that were set by the Parish Council. Applications varied from a request for play activities at Westhill to care for MS sufferers in the community. These came alongside regular

requests for fantastic local projects and charities providing transport for the isolated, holidays for the disabled, a film club for people with learning difficulties, activity sessions for young people and poppy wreaths for Remembrance Day. The Grants Committee made their recommendations to the Parish Council at their meeting on 2nd November. The grants will be presented to the successful applicants at Westfield’s Christmas Lights Switch-On event on Thursday 26th November.

11

Snow Wardens in Westfield – can you help? The Parish Council would like to say a hearty thanks to Val Duery for her years as a volunteer Snow Warden in Westfield. Thank you Val for your time and commitment to keeping some key pavements clear in Westfield during the bad weather. It takes a very public spirited person to decide to become a Snow Warden. It involves going out in the most inhospitable weather, when many of us would prefer to stay in. But the work is really appreciated. It makes the world of difference to those who would otherwise become housebound for fear of falling on a slippery pavement

and it makes our environment safer for all, young and old. The volunteers go out when snow is forecasted and grit the footpaths in their immediate vicinity, using the equipment and grit provided by the Council. The amount of time you give is up to you, it might simply be a couple of hours. All volunteers are very welcome and if you are interested in becoming a Snow Warden, please contact the Parish Council at council@ westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk or write to The Parish Clerk, Westfield Parish Council, The Oval Office, Cobblers Way, Westfield BA3 3BX. Thank you.

Gingerbread Stuffing Ingredients 500 grams of Onions (3 medium onions) 2 eating apples (approx. 325g, peeled and cored) 45 grams of butter 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil 750grams of streaky bacon zest of 2 clementine’s or 1 orange 450 grams of good shop bought gingerbread loaves, loosely crumbed. 2 large eggs approx.. half a teaspoon of freshly ground pepper.

Method Using a food processor or by hand, finely chop the onions and apples. Put the butter and oil in a large, wide saucepan over a medium heat and fry the chopped onions and apples until soft, about 10–15 minutes. Finely chop the streaky bacon in the processor, or by hand, and add this to the softened onion and apple mixture. Cook everything, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes more. Add the zest of the clementine’s/orange. Take the pan off the heat and let it cool a little before mixing in the gingerbread crumbs. You can let this get properly cold now if you want. Just before you want to cook the stuffing, add the beaten eggs and pepper, and use it to stuff the cavity of your turkey, or cook all of it (or what’s left after stuffing your bird) in a buttered baking dish. Bake it in a hot oven (200°C/gas mark 6/400ºF) with your turkey for about the last 45 minutes. If the stuffing’s going into a full oven – which it no doubt is – there should be no need to cover the dish. If the oven is less full, and therefore hotter and less steamy, you could cover with foil for the first 30 minutes. Let the cooked stuffing sit in its terrine for a good 10 minutes out of the oven before turning it out and slicing it. Or just spoon from the dish if that’s less stressful.

MAKE AHEAD TIP:

Make the stuffing, leave to cool completely then beat in the eggs and pepper. Cover and keep in the fridge for up to 2 days.

FREEZE AHEAD TIP:

Make the stuffing, with the eggs and pepper, and freeze for up to 2 weeks. Thaw overnight in the fridge.

We are delighted to announce that our annual Christmas Craft Fayre will take place this year on Sunday 29th November. It will be at Westfield Sports and Community Centre, Westhill Road, Westfield, BA3 3TE from 2pm to 4pm. As Councillors we hear time and again that nothing happens in Westfield. We are trying to put this right, and there is a great deal of hard work being done by a small group of dedicated people. Our successes to date include Westfield Fun Day, the Christmas Tree lights switch on event and the boules on Tuesday evenings during the summer at Norton Hill Recreation ground. To make any event successful we need the support of the community. We have ideas of how to make more things happen in Westfield, but again the support of the community is essential. For this year’s Craft Fayre we have face painting, Christmas craft stalls and other stalls, including the charities WISH and Guide Dogs for the Blind, who will have a guide dog for you to meet. If you have any ideas for the Fayre, or any ideas about what could be happening in Westfield, then please contact Cllr Phil Wilkinson on 01761 431355. We welcome your support.

John Reynolds Marathon Man

Living in Westfield since the age of 23, John Reynolds has become a local celebrity in the community and beyond. With numerous marathons, ultra marathons and extreme runs under his belt, alongside the raising of £70,000 for charity, he has certainly lived up to his nicknames of Duracell John and The Marathon Man. John’s journey began 11 years ago after radiotherapy treatment for a thyroid problem. While he was receiving treatment at the Royal United Hospital in Bath he found himself faceto-face with children having the same treatment for life-limiting conditions. He found their bravery inspirational and decided he wanted to raise money for the hospice. After returning from treatment, it would take John hours to reach the bottom of his back garden but bit-by-bit and with the support of family and friends, John built his strength and entered the Midsomer Norton half marathon. The exercise and running continued, as this was the only way to keep treatment and medication at bay. This was the start of John’s amazing achievements. He has run for many local and national charities including Children’s Hospice South West, Time is Precious, Help the Heroes and many more. In the beginning, he would ask the charities if he could run for them but as time has passed, he now gets inundated with requests. John’s amazing achievements help raise the profile of these charities, which he feels also helps with further donations. He is extremely humble and thankful for everyone who has sponsored him to help reach the amazing £70k that he has raised so far.

17 Seeing people on the route cheering him on, or thank you letters and phone calls from charities and families effected, is a huge factor in John’s dogged determination. The list of the mind boggling runs that John has achieved is amazing but the one that sticks out for John was the Ultra Marathon Mont Blanc which took him on a massive assent across the Alps into Italy and Switzerland. Covering 11 mountains and altitudes of 10,000 metres, it was a daunting feat. While he is no stranger to tough competition and conditions, he was apprehensive because he had never experienced running at altitude. Once started however, the encouragement from fellow athletes and villages en route, along with the most stunning scenery pushed him to finish the route in 7 hours which was under the limit time. Along with the intense training John does on a weekly basis, he is also training other runners 3 times a week for the Bath Half next year running in support of Time is Precious. He wants to be able to share his knowledge and mental determination with others, so they can also raise as much as they can for charity. Alongside this, John visits local primary schools to spread the word that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. With idols

such as Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Bear Grylls and Jo Pavey, words like determination, positive, overcome, achieve are like a mantra to John. All of John’s achievements have been funded directly from his pocket and sometimes they can be very costly. Getting through at least 8 pairs of trainers a year, plus equipment, travel expenses and more, John truly does give everything he has for his events. His place of work is extremely supportive but he has also taken unpaid leave for training and events. If any local company would like to consider sponsoring and supporting John, please do contact us on 01761 410141 and we can pass his details onto you. John has just finished the Bristol/Bath marathon. He decided to add an extra 200 miles to the start line and then also run home from Bath at the end, another amazing achievement. John is in the process of writing a book about his run across Great Britain and would also like to spend a bit more time on his other favourite sports of Sea kayaking and free diving. John truly is an inspirational man and the positive attitude and mental strength he possesses is a lesson to us all. Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it!

Success on the Cards for Fosse Way Sixth Form Students! Enterprising sixth form students at Fosse Way School, have launched a business venture that looks set for great success. Using a computer program and specialist equipment students are now able to produce identity badges of a professional standard for use in business, schools and other organisations. The attractive badges are made of durable plastic and the students are keen to tailor each design to match the customer’s requirements precisely. Badges can also be supplied complete with matching lanyards and holders. All profits from the production of the badges will go towards improving facilities at the Fosse Way Enterprise Centre. A team of five ambitious students are involved in the production of the badges. Toby Moon, Bradley Purchase, Owen Whitfield, Ethan Seymour and

Scott Bratton. Every aspect of the process, from taking orders to delivery of the finished product, is undertaken by the students with support from their job coach, Dan Chevantre. An impressive list of clients has already purchased badges, amongst them Hayesdown School, The National Autistic Society, Talk Speech Therapy and of course, Fosse Way School. The students are hoping that their new venture will rapidly expand and are already approaching potential customers in Frome, Bath and Bristol. Any readers who may be interested in ordering identity badges from Fosse Way School Enterprise should contact the team at

Charity Cake Sale at Fosse Way School Exceeds all Expectations! On Friday 25th September staff and pupils at Fosse Way School in Westfield raised £300 for Macmillan Cancer Support; tripling the target set by representatives at a school council meeting. Staff at the school, which caters for pupils aged three to nineteen with special educational needs, were stunned by the enormous support the event received.

Pupils throughout the age range contributed cakes, pastries and other tempting delicacies to a vast array presented for sale in the school hall. Many baked cakes themselves especially for the occasion, some enlisting the help of parents to assist with their ambitious designs. Teaching staff also took part in the event, many offering fine examples of their baking prowess. Assistant Principal, Alex Davies commented, “We were inundated with cakes and treats and as a result managed to raise a massive £300!”

The Community Bus was fortunate to be awarded funding from the Big Lottery to continue family sessions in Westfield (among other locations in the area) for the next 3 years! The Bus parks in the car park of Westhill Club next to the playing fields every Tuesday in term time 10am-12. Anyone with a baby/toddler/preschooler is welcome for play and to meet other local families. The playbus is kitted out for messy play on the lower deck with sand, paint, craft and on the upper deck there’s dressing up, books, cars and garage, baby toys and lots of fun things to do. Snack time is half-way through the session downstairs, when the children can join in singing and rhyming, while the adults get to have a chat over tea/coffee upstairs. It’s free to come along, but we ask for a small donation. The Lottery award includes funds for a new Bus which should be ready by March 2016 so come along and enjoy!

We are a smaller than average school and pride ourselves on our caring approach and our ability to meet every child’s needs, helping them develop and ensure they reach their full potential, whilst growing in the love of Christ. We welcome children of all faiths. We also offer wrap-around care as well as an independent on-site Nursery

It’s time to rethink your opinion of a ‘Social Club’ No longer is it the realm of an old man’s, quiet drinking retreat. No more are ‘new people’ glared at when they dare to enter. Gone are the old-fashioned ‘club-style’ acts playing cheesy characterless covers of songs you’ve heard a thousand times before! Mardons Social Club is very much a forward thinking, creative and welcoming venue that actively encourages all ages - truly offering something for everyone. The club’s new building has now been open for a few months and is thriving. Despite still being a little tricky to find on the new development on the Nightingale Estate at Norton Hill, attendance has been impressive, steadily building week on week as new visitors discover what they’ve been missing. With guests now regularly travelling all the way to Mardons from places as far away as Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Bath, the club is still very keen to let local people know what’s on offer and to dispel the often wrongly held preconceived ideas of the ‘social club’. A busy skittles schedule, along with darts and pool, means that week nights are well attended. With occasional party bookings and events keeping Friday nights thriving, it’s Saturday nights that are particularly booming.

The superb musicians secured by the club, are finally getting the notice they deserve. All the bands booked to play are carefully chosen, not only to ensure they are at the top of their game, but also to maintain the variety and diversity that the club has become known for. Never complacent, the club only works with the very best musicians around, often gaining exclusive public performances from groups that generally only play private or corporate functions. Whether it’s rock ’n’ roll, pop, soul, ska or even boogie woogie, you are sure to find something that will appeal as the club continues to deliver top quality entertainment each week. you can hire to transport your members to their groups events, luncheon clubs, film evenings, church services, etc., and return them home again? This voluntary service is operated by Midsomer Norton & Radstock Community Service Vehicle Trust which was first founded by public appeal in 1967 and is a Registered Charity No 276166. Last year, almost 20 groups used this for their regular activities and others made use of it for trips to open gardens and garden centres, lakes, meals out and other places of interest. A rate per mile is charged and groups may use their own driver if they wish (subject to prior clearance by our Vehicle Manager.) If your group would like to hire the minibus, (subject to availability and driver) please contact the Co-ordinator on 01761 413975 or David Shearn (Secretary/Treasurer) on 01761 413473. Carol Price, a member of the Committee and newly appointed Trustee said, “It’s fabulous what can be done for all members of our Community! Being able to get out of the house and meet friends, can be a life saver for many people. It’s also great to have volunteer drivers who are willing and able to drive regularly for groups! Thank you to users and drivers alike!”

The

Parish Clerk In my message last quarter I mentioned that we were about to embark on a consultation with young people for new play equipment at Westhill Recreation Ground. I am glad to say that we had many enthusiastic responses, particularly from the children of Westfield Primary School, where the clear favourite consists of a series of intricately interwoven timber logs and steel ropes, inspired by the classic game, Pick-up-Sticks. The children’s choice of this quirky climbing challenge, along with a buddy board and flymobile are going to the Committee for final decision this month. First steps have been taken in the formation of a Neighbourhood Plan with the convening of a Group of Councillors and volunteers. Neighbourhood planning gives communities direct power to develop a shared vision for our neighbourhood and shape the growth of the local area. For example, it allows us to choose if and where we want new homes,

shops and offices to be built, have a say on what those new buildings should look like and what infrastructure should be provided. Teamwork is essential if this Plan is to come together. So if you are motivated to take up the challenge and help shape the Parish for the future generations, please do contact the Parish Council and take part. As we turn our attention now to the festive season, the Council has decided to invest in a five year plan for Christmas Lights on 12 lamp posts on the Wells Road, in addition to the Christmas Trees around the local shops and the lights on the rooted Christmas Tree at the top of Elm Tree Avenue. We hope you will join us there for the traditional Lights Switch on Event on 26th November at 6.30pm. I hope you have a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.
