Message from Contents the Chairman 4 Fun Day recap
I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful summer weather that we are having while I write this. It has surely brought out the best in this year’s Front Garden competition with the winner being Mr and Mrs Preston of Glebelands with a beautiful display and the best container going to Mrs Chant from Kestrel Place. Well done to everyone who took part. The Fun Day in June was a fantastic success and a great big thank you to the organisers Cllr Philip Wilkinson and family and Cllr Diana Cooper, who worked very hard to make it work. The Fun Day was opened by Michael Eavis who spoke well of Westfield. Westfield is looking to have its Neighbourhood Plan going to referendum on 6th September. This will give all Westfield residents a chance to have a say on what happens in their community so please vote and help make your community a better place. This has been a long and time consuming piece of work so thank you so much to all those who have worked on it. Mr Bob Wilkinson, who has been delivering the Westfield Warbler for the past few years, is stepping down. The Parish Council would like to wish him all the best and thank him for his hard work and dedication. Parish Councillors’ surgeries were set up this year with two having already taken place. There will be other surgeries from September to January which will give residents a chance to know their Councillors and put questions and to get some answers in their community. Grass cutting of public spaces is always a contentious issue and there are some spaces in Westfield that B&NES are saying they can no longer cut. As a result, we had a couple of meetings with B&NES officers and the residents affected. These meetings were very productive, and we are still in the process of working out a way forward with B&NES.

Sizzling Success for Westfield Fun Day “Slap on the sun cream for a scorcher at Westfield Fun Day” - that’s how we ended our last article in the lead up to Fun Day – and you certainly needed it on Sunday 3rd June! The sun shone, the skies were blue and the field at Westhill Recreation Ground was cram packed with fun. Skittles, tombola, BBQ, inflatables, plant stalls, sweets, and a fairground organ all set the tone for a good old fashioned community event. While motor fans were treated to classic vehicles, including bikes from Radstock Devils Scooter Club, animal lovers got to meet the gorgeous donkeys from Danny Donkey and Pals and not one, not two but five magnificent birds of prey from Pitcombe Rock Falconry which had a constant stream of visitors throughout the day. The Fire Service honoured their commitment to be there, despite having been out on a ‘shout’ just before the event started, and the Police Cadets also mingled with the crowds.
We were delighted that local farmer and festival organiser extraordinaire, Michael Eavis, opened the event with some kind words about Westfield which was created only seven years ago but which has a community heart going back generations and is a parish in its own right. The 4 - The Westfield Westfield Warbler Warbler
Scruffs Dog Show was a great success with lots of local dogs and their owners circling the show ring vying for such prizes as waggiest tail, best trick and young handler. Harley the Yorkshire Terrier won a stunning three rosettes across the show including first prize for dog that looks most like its owner, but it was beautiful Samoyed, Sasha, who won the golden rosette for the dog the judges most wanted to take home.
Spider-Man and Princess Elsa delighted the children as they mingled with the crowds and in the show ring we had rousing performances from two wonderful silver bands, Westfield Ladies’ Choir, Limelight Dance School and bags full of energy in stunning performances from Bathampton Morris Men and Jamie Woodland Academy.
Westfield Parish Council would like to thank everyone involved in putting on this fantastic event and everyone who came along to support it on the day. If you would like to get involved with our friendly team that organise the Fun Day we would love to hear from you: council@ westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk or 01761 410669. The Westfield Warbler - 5
Youth Services Update Westfield Youth Project runs every Tuesday evening from 7-9pm and has been running a number of projects over the spring and summer months. All of these have come from what the young people of Westfield said they would like to do, and from Youth Connect staff assessing their needs. The music project still runs each week and has been our most successful project with lots of young people getting involved and gaining accreditation for the time and dedication they have put in to learning new skills. Some young people from Westfield were given the opportunity to perform at a local spring festival. Youth Connect hosted a youth tent and young people helped to plan and run the event as well as perform. We run cookery sessions each week and this is always very popular and young people decide what they would like to cook from scratch. We held a BBQ in the park recently that was very well attended. We also invited some street performers from the Natural Theatre Company to join us, they engaged young people in street theatre and fancy dress and took videos of young people acting in the park. This was a very good opportunity for young people to be creative and work with an amazing outside agency. We have run a number of different issue based workshops including things like alcohol safety information, sexual health advice and information and work around revision and exam stress. Young people like to relax and be creative in our sessions so we have a chill out space where they can

The Future is Fantastic at Westfield Primary!
Westfield Primary played host to over 32 different businesses and professionals as part of their Fantastic Futures week recently, with the main aim of raising children’s aspirations for future careers. Following the success of a similar week last year, various different companies and individuals worked alongside the children to talk about their roles whilst giving pupils ‘hands-on’ opportunities to practise different skills and competencies such as teamwork, communication skills and creativity. The MOD, Royal Navy, BloodHound, NHS, Engie and Virgin Media were just some of the inspirational visitors in attendance.
Whether it is designing boats, insulating a Concorde jet engine, plumbing pipes or launching rockets into space, it’s clear to see that the future of children at Westfield Primary has never looked so fantastic!
The week, which was first run last year, aims to raise the children’s aspirations, whilst at the same time providing them with many exciting activities and opportunities. The children also explore a range of skills and competencies, including; creativity, innovation, problem solving, teamwork, communication and careers awareness, all relevant to careers in STEM industries. Students celebrate at Bath College Higher Education Graduation Ceremony Higher Education graduates from Bath College celebrated their success at their Graduation Ceremony. More than 80 students dressed in mortar boards and gowns gathered at The Assembly Rooms to collect their certificates. The students have all completed degree level and higher education courses, including programmes validated by the University of Bath, The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). The ceremony opened with an impressive Civic Procession made up of the Senior Management Team of the College, Heads of Departments, academic staff, Governors, and The Mayor of Bath, Councillor Patrick Anketell-Jones, led by the City Sword-Bearer and two Mace-Bearers. Once everyone was seated, guests were welcomed by Laurel Penrose, Principal and CEO of Bath College and certificates were handed out to graduates from Carole Stott, the Chair of Governors.
Nick said that: “What Bath College has done is to offer you all an immersive, supportive learning world that has hopefully strengthened your self–confidence and selfbelief and helped you all grow in stature. “A great learning environment is also about creating life skills such as communication, teamwork, self-reliance, self-control, and an unshakeable belief that you can be the very best you want to be.” Proud friends and family looked on as graduates collected their awards in subjects such as Accounting, Business, Construction, Engineering, Computing, Marketing, Music Production and Education and Training. After the Ceremony the graduates gathered outside the Assembly Rooms and threw their hats in the air to the cheers of guests and passers-by including a city tour bus full of applauding tourists. A drinks and canapé reception was held at Woods restaurant where the graduates and their families continued their celebration. Laurel Penrose, Principal and CEO of Bath College said that: “It has been a wonderful day.
Two keynote speakers inspired the crowds with their words; Gavin Strange, Senior Designer & Director at Aardman Animations and Nick Isles, Managing Director of Corporate Agenda advice consultancy.
“These students remind us that success comes to those who work - and I know the extra work they have undertaken through their studies will, at times, have been difficult and gruelling, but they have made it through.
Gavin pointed out to the graduates that: “We all have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé does or Mozart did. It’s how we choose to use those hours that count.”
“I am very proud of our Higher Education graduates and I wish them all the very best in their exciting futures.”

Fosseway Bowls Club
have friendly matches during the week when there are no league matches.
Fosseway Bowls Club is a small friendly club situated on the outskirts of Westfield. Our club house is off Charlton Lane directly behind The Best Western Centurion Hotel. We have a men’s section and a ladies’ section but we all work together to make a very happy mixed club. We have social members who either cannot bowl or find that their bowling days are over but still like to keep in touch with friends they have made over their bowling years. All members are made welcome when they visit us. We are affiliated to the Somerset Bowling Association and also Bowl England. The ladies are in two leagues, in one we play rinks, in the other triples. In the last two years the ladies have been winners and runners up in both leagues. The men are in two leagues playing rinks in both. We also play in a mixed league on a Friday evening. Although these games are very competitive they are also enjoyable. We also have mixed friendly matches on Sundays and the men

We have away days during the summer and a week’s tour in the early part of the season. All these are mixed matches. We hold Club nights on Mondays where new members come and get coaching from our excellent coaches. Our members play in the Monday night Triples and most enjoy a meal afterwards cooked by our lovely ladies. After the end of the bowling season we try and meet at least once a month for social activities, these include film nights, games nights and quiz nights. Anyone wanting to learn to bowl or already bowl and would like to join us, come along on any Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 6pm. Looking forward to seeing some new “bowlers”. Don’t miss out on events at Mardons! Whilst Mardons Social club is probably best known for the high calibre of its entertainment, there’s a lot more on offer than just great music. The World Cup, though ending all too soon, saw Mardons consistently at full capacity, with guests watching the England games on the high definition big screen and the multiple TVs. The atmosphere was electric for each of the games and showed just why Mardons is an ideal venue to enjoy televised sport. Visitors followed the games with a passion and raised the roof with their spirited celebrations as the England team progressed ever closer to the final. The club continues to subscribe to both Sky Sports and BT Sports channels and will endeavour to show as many games as possible. So, as the Premier League season kicks off, Mardons hope to see football fans of all ages cheering on their favourite teams. As always , there are a number of charity events in the pipeline, these will include a Cider Night and a second Skittles Knockout, both hosted by the Midsomer Norton Carnival Association as fundraisers for the forthcoming November carnival.
Co-op to remain closed after fire
Charity events are always well-supported and the social club is extremely grateful to everyone that attends and would like to thank them for their continued generosity. Musical highlights over the next few months include the return of The UpTones as well as The Retreats (and their Jungle Book covers!), plus the debut of the awesome Haus Band and Silvertrain, the muchanticipated band that was forced to postpone earlier in the year due to the severe snow. Entry is free and non-members are always welcome at Mardons.
Keep up to date with all that’s happening at: Facebook.com/mardonsclub
The Co-op store at Elm Tree Avenue suffered a fire in June and a man in his 90s was rescued from the two-storey building by fire crews early in the morning, luckily there were no reported injuries.
A spokesperson from the Radstock Co-operative Society who run the store at Elm Tree Avenue, said: “I can confirm that there was an incident at the Westfield Convenience Store, resulting in the closure of the store until further notice due to smoke damage. No one was injured and the fire service was able to contain the situation before any structural damage was caused.
Investigators believe the cause of the fire is thought to have been accidental, but the store will have to remain closed for some time due to the effects of the smoke.
“Colleagues who work at the store are being deployed to other stores whilst the cause of the incident is investigated and refurbishment work is completed. This may take several weeks.” The Westfield Warbler - 11
Changes to local bus services There are a couple of changes to local bus services running through Westfield. This is due to new contracts that run many council-supported bus services in the region. These have been awarded following a public consultation, review and competitive tender. From the 2nd September, there are a few changes being implemented to bus routes, but the majority will remain the same. One early morning and two evening journeys will be withdrawn because of lack of use. Services that will remain the same include: Service 82 (Radstock-Paulton) Local daytime (Mon-Fri) service operating via residential estates is retained unchanged, although the service will operate via Monger Lane when the route through the new development is open. Service 172 (evening service to Midsomer Norton and Paulton) The Mon-Sat evening journeys between Bath and Paulton via Midsomer Norton are retained with no change to services, except that the 22:55 journey from Bath will continue from Paulton to High Littleton,
12 - The Westfield Warbler
Timsbury and Farmborough, replacing the current late night journey on the 179. The Sunday evening journeys on service 172 are also unchanged. Service 179 (Sunday service to Timsbury, Farmborough and Writhlington) The Sunday day time service will have no changes to the service, but the 179 late evening bus from Bath to Timsbury, Farmborough and Writhlington will change. The evening bus from Bath at 23:00 will be withdrawn. A new facility is being introduced on 172 service that will allow passengers travelling from Bath to High Littleton, Timsbury and Farmborough to travel at 22:55 Mon-Sat. Further bus service changes will come into place from 2nd September from commercial operators, which will be announced soon.
Meet the Grant Recipient Name of recipient Carers’ Centre for Bath and North East Somerset
What is the main purpose of your organisation? The Carers’ Centre’s purpose is to help people who care to improve their lives and to continue to care for as long as they want to. There are 20,000 carers in the area and 1 in 4 people will become a carer at some time in their lives. We provide a range of advice and support direct to over 4,000 carers a year in B&NES, over 500 of which are young carers aged 5-25 and all of whom are caring for a seriously ill or disabled family member. As well as disseminating information and support on carers’ rights and ensuring their voices can be heard we also have trained staff and volunteers who provide counselling and emotional support. In addition we have a programme of respite activities for carers to ensure that they are able to take a break and share their experiences with other in similar circumstances.
What was the grant from Westfield Parish Council used for? We started up a monthly coffee morning at Mardons Social Club with around 10 carers attending each time. We used the funding to fund our Carer Support Officer’s time in setting up and running the group, advertising the group and providing refreshments.
Were there any extras for which you had to find funds or did our grant cover the whole project? We got matched funding and support from St John’s Foundation and from Quartet Community Foundation.
Carers have been supported to rekindle connections as well as make new ones, a couple of carers had lost touch with each other due to their caring role and had reconnected through the group enabling them to meet up in-between sessions. The Carer Support Officer is also able to promote other health and well-being activities to the carers attending through promoting our breaks activities and emotional support services where appropriate. This gives carers confidence to use these services where they have not previously felt confident to do so.
How did you find the process of applying for a grant? Was it easy, did it take much time? It was simple and straight forward and there was lots of help from Westfield Parish Council. It took about 1 hour to complete in total.
Do you have any advice for potential applicants when completing grant applications? Have a project in mind and have a go, if you’re not sure Westfield Parish Council are really helpful.
What are your organisation’s plans for the future and how important is grant funding in those plans? We are planning to provide more ways of connecting carers in their local communities, this funding is really important to enable us to achieve this in Westfield and the learning we are gaining is helping us to improve support in Westfield and across the whole of Bath and North East Somerset.
What are the main benefits you have seen as a result of the grant funding? Carers have been able to connect and make friends, reducing their social isolation and improving their health and well-being. Carers have been able to provide each other with peer support, sharing their stories of caring and being able to give each other tips, as well as being able to get away from the caring role and talk about other interests. The peer support helps carers to feel able to continue caring with renewed energy. The Westfield Warbler - 13
Get Active Summer Play Sessions at the Rec WPA can’t stay away – we love visiting to play at The Rec! Following on from play sessions earlier in the year supported by Quartet, a further fun series of FREE play sessions held over the summer term and supported by Westfield Parish Council delighted members of the community. Swan – Busier than ever! Swan’s Transport service has just had its busiest ever financial year – with a total of 4,922 journeys carried out by our volunteer drivers. Our service takes the elderly and disabled who are on low incomes and unable to use a bus or to afford taxis to their medical or social appointments, or to take them shopping and enable them to get out in the community. Increased demand for this important service means that Swan are still in need of more drivers with cars and those with availability on Thursdays would be especially welcome! We’d love you to join our team! Get in touch with us on: 01761 439548. If you are unable to offer your time but would like to help us some other way then adding ‘Swan Advice
Network’ as your favourite charity when you buy goods on eBay would give you the option to occasionally donate a small amount to our work. To make us your favourite; go to ebay.co.uk and click on My eBay and login as normal. Click from the activity tab over to the Account tab. Click on Donation account. Then click onto Favourites (above Pending donations) and search for Swan Advice Network. Click on Add to my Favourites located below. It then shows a heart symbol with ‘My favourite charity’ next to it and you are all set!
Aligning the Westfield postal address with Westfield Parish On-going confusion which arises through the Royal Mail’s referencing of a number of houses in the parish of Westfield as ‘Midsomer Norton, Radstock’ has raised some concern in recent years. As those who live and work in Westfield know, a lot of hard work goes on to consolidate the identity of the parish and raise its profile. Fostering community spirit and pride is important for the well-being of those who live in the parish. The Parish Council feels it is important that there should be no confusion about the parish in which one lives. We would therefore like all addresses within Westfield to be recognised as such with the ‘Westfield, Radstock’ postal address. Royal Mail is supportive of this view and will be writing to those affected. For the sake of clarity and openness we do hope that Royal Mail goes ahead with the change.

Parish Councillors’ surgeries The people of Westfield have been able to get ‘up close and personal’ with their Parish Councillors recently. The Surgeries held by some of Westfield Parish Councillors to date have been a great success, with people wanting to talk to Councillors about all sorts of issues within the parish.
Cllrs Cooper and Williams held a surgery at Mardons in July and were met by residents who were interested in the development of a new estate at Cobblers Way and in the preservation of trees in Westfield, particularly an Elm Tree at Chaucer Road, which Councillors were able to reassure those concerned is currently under discussion at Council.
The main items of concern that were highlighted to Cllrs Jackson and Mansell at St Peter’s Church Fete in June were those of parking around Longfellow Road and the overgrown hedges at the public footpaths. We hope that after some considerable discussions with B&NES the footpaths are now clear of hedges and weeds, where the responsibility is held by B&NES. There are those hedges, of course, that are owned by residents who may not realise that they are impeding the progress of walkers. These people have been written to by the Public Rights of Way officer at B&NES who hopefully will take the necessary measures. We have highlighted the issue of parking along Longfellow Road on several occasions to the relevant authorities and succeeded once in getting Traffic Wardens to patrol the street. We understand that this is a very difficult ongoing situation which we appreciate and do try to do something about frequently. 20 - The Westfield Warbler
Alpha Course at St Peter’s, Westfield We all explore, every day, knowingly and unknowingly. For all our searching, it’s rare to find time to think and talk about the big questions of life; about faith and reason and God and meaning. Alpha offers the opportunity to do just that, in an informal, friendly and open environment. The Alpha course is available to all, whether you have a faith or none. No two Alphas are the same, but all have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation. Whether it’s a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch up over coffee and cake, food has a way of bringing people together. It’s no different at Alpha. Each session starts with food, because it’s a great way to build community and get to know each other.
Then a talk designed to engage and inspire conversation. Usually around thirty minutes long, they are designed to explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions from Who is Jesus? to Why and how do I pray? and much more. Probably the most important part of any Alpha is the conversation. The chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything and there’s nothing you can’t say. Seriously, it’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment. Due to location and the need to provide food, spaces on the course are limited. To register an interest or to seek clarification, please email Rev. Ian Rousell at: rev.ian.stpeters@gmail.com
Grant Funding Now Available “We really have appreciated the funding, it has actually made the difference between us being able to continue as a choir or fold.” So reported the Chair of Westfield Ladies’ Choir, now Westfield Voices, Lesley Schofield, when feeding back on the benefits of the grant they received from Westfield Parish Council last year. The annual grant pot is now open with a deadline of 3rd October to submit a simple application form for grants of up to £1000, with larger amounts available in exceptional circumstances. Westfield Parish Council has supported a wide variety of organisations over the seven years since the Council was formed, with regular donations to invaluable services such as St Nicholas Church graveyard, Dial a Ride, SWAN Advice Network and the Community Bus as well as occasional donations to boost projects such as decoration of the counselling room at Off
the Record, reminiscence through music sessions at Whitehaven Care Home and re-vamped equipment for the NR Chess Club. We are bringing you good news stories of grant recipients in each edition of the Warbler with this edition’s article focusing on the benefits to B&NES Carers’ Centre in Westfield. If you are involved in an organisation based in Westfield or involving residents of Westfield then please consider applying. The application form simply asks for details of your organisation and the project for which you need funding. Applications are considered during October and early November with grant payments being made to successful applicants at the end of November. Application criteria and forms are all available on our website: www.westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk/ grants/ or by calling the office on 01761 410669 and we would be happy to help with any queries.

Westfield to commemorate its war heroes Westfield Parish Council is keen to talk to residents or relatives further afield who lost family members during the World War I and World War II. With the centenary of the Armistice approaching, Westfield is turning its thoughts to commemorations of its local heroes. Whilst some names are listed on memorials in
Radstock or in Midsomer Norton there is no memorial in Westfield and the Parish Council, keen to continue its work of creating a community identity, would like to speak to anyone whose relatives were involved during the wars either at home or in the field. Indeed some of those identified in the History of Westfield exhibition have ‘no known grave’ and no memorial at all, as far as we can tell. Very few women in uniform were killed, but Miss E Barnes, commemorated in Radstock and buried at St John’s Church, MSN, is one of them. In 1945 her parents lived in Westfield. If you can help with any information, we would love to hear from you. Please call or email the office on 01761 410669 council@westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk
Calling all Dog Walkers There is something very special about being able to take your dog out for a walk or run (if you’re very energetic!!), especially when the weather is very favourable as it has been recently – though not if it’s too hot. We would ask all dog owners to be responsible for clearing up their dog’s mess, which we’re happy to say most people are. There have been issues, however, where people are seen to pick up the mess, then leave the bag in a hedge. In this instance, it was encroaching on a resident’s property and she has had to go out and clear the mess on a regular basis. Please could you think carefully before disposing of your bag containing your dog’s mess. It’s all very well being seen to pick up the mess, but throwing the bag away is classed as littering and carries an on the spot fine of £150. We ask that you choose carefully where you let your dog do its business, thinking about how your action affects other residents in the area. Any witnesses to fouling, or walkers disposing of bags anywhere other than in a bin, should report it as soon as possible to B&NES Council Connect by calling 01225 394041, or you can report online now by going to www.fixmystreet.com

Westfield Wows in Wells
For the first time Westfield Petanque Club entered the Wells Charity Boules Tournament. What a day it turned out to be, with Westfield Petanque Club winning all of their five games in the preliminary rounds, with maximum scores. With 43 teams entered, we were the only team in the tournament to do this. Fuelled by two jugs of Pimms, and a delicious lunch, we went into the quarter finals, and were once again triumphant. Unfortunately, in the semi-finals, we came up against one of the finalists from last year, a formidable team from Bath, led by a French chef, and we lost. Were we downhearted? Not a bit of it, we had exceeded all of our expectations, and had an absolutely brilliant day. The weather played its part, if a little too hot at times, and the organisation was first class. We returned home tired but jubilant, and needless to say, already talking about next year. Meanwhile, our next challenge, is a re-match against our friends from the Twinning Association, and their French visitors, in August. Our usual Tuesday nights at Norton Hill Recreation Ground continue throughout the summer, so if you feel inspired to join us, do come along at 6pm.

Westfield Ladies’ Choir are Reborn as Westfield Voices What a busy summer we have had! We sang at Westfield Fun Day, showing off songs old and new, and were delighted that it was warm and sunny. We sang for our President, Muriel Dunsford, at Coombe Lea, in honour of her 101st birthday. Then we sang for Pensford Evergreens in their village hall. They are always a pleasure to entertain as they are such a warm and welcoming group. The delightful sunny weather was a shade less welcome as the hall is difficult to cool, so we were very happy to escape outside at half time. We sang again at Holcombe Gala and, learning from experience, made sure we put up a Gazebo to shelter under while we waited to perform. In and around all these performances, our conductor, Ruth, was working hard to get a programme together for our Relaunch concert (also featuring our friends Up Front and Casual) which took place on Saturday 28th July at which we were reborn as Westfield Voices.

We are planning to donate part of the proceeds to our chosen charity, Wilberry Wonder Pony. The grant we received from Radstock and Westfield Big Local has been spent on a PA system and equipment that allows us to record our accompaniments, so that we can still rehearse even when a pianist is not available, but we are still looking for someone to accompany us, so if you are a pianist looking for something to do on Wednesday evenings, we’d be very pleased to hear from you (contact details below). Please note, this is a paid position. We are just as welcoming to new members now we are Westfield Voices, so if you have ever fancied singing with a choir come and join us (no auditions). Our rehearsals are on Wednesday nights at St Peter’s church Hall from 7:15 to 9:00pm. If you would like to join us, or maybe you would like to book us to sing for your organisation/group, please contact Lesley Schofield on 01761 419540 or Jane Dyson on 0761 232715 or jane_dyson@live.co.uk

Intense summer doesn’t deter Westfield’s gardeners The entries for Westfield Front Garden competition have been submitted, the judging has taken place and we are delighted to announce that the winners of the Front Garden Competition are: • Best Front Garden - Mr and Mrs Preston in Glebelands • Best Container - Mrs J Chant at Kestrel Place
Mrs Preston said that their winning garden was the result of making use of a lot of water that had been saved from use in the house. It’s great to see that Westfield’s gardeners have care for the environment as well as wanting the garden to look its best. The judging was done by Mr Dave Vallance of Bath
College, Somer Valley Campus. There were 5 criteria in each category. For the front gardens the criteria were Initial impact; Structure, use of aspect and space; Flower colour and use of plants; Quality of plant care and general health and Potential all year interest. It was noted that

conditions this year have been very difficult, with the lack of rain and the intense heat making it a challenge to keep any garden looking vibrant. There was a winner, however, and that winner Mr Dave Preston, had a garden with a good choice of well-established plants despite the conditions. Mr Vallance said “This garden has an excellent choice of plants providing colour all year round and there is an effective variation of height in a well thought out design. The repetition of some plants, especially the tobacco plants, works well with splashes of colour in between. This is a well-established garden that has been maintained with a great deal of care”. A commendation was given to 42 Nightingale Way that came, once again, a very close second. Mr Vallance said “Considering this is a fairly new garden and unusual shaped plot this gardener has done a great job of making good use of the plot with a huge variety of plants and lovely range of height, colour and flower shapes and forms that have made use of every space. This garden will get even better with time. As every gardener knows, a great garden is not made overnight!” For the container category the criteria were Initial impact; Use of plants and colour; Presentation, balance and symmetry; Quality of plant care and general health and Potential for long term display.

Mrs Chant, the winner of the container category had, what the judge described as “an unusual choice of plants that worked very effectively. Each individual container was very good and the overall effect very pleasing. There was a simple selection of plants and the containers matched the colours of the flowers well, creating an excellent initial visual impact.” A commendation was given to 36 Waterside Way for their containers that were very nicely arranged. Mr Vallance said “There was a good use of repetition of colour and style of plant that, altogether, gave a truly harmonious effect which was very tasteful” Thank you to all those that entered. Each entrant has been given feedback from the judge, which hopefully will spur them on to an entry next year.

Representatives from Westfield Surgery, Westfield Allotment and Garden Society, A. F. Denning Ltd and Westfield Parish Council who worked collaboratively to install and maintain the defibrillator.
Defibrillator goes live at Westfield Surgery Westfield welcomes the installation of its fourth defibrillator in the parish. Located just outside the front door of Westfield Surgery on Waterford Park, the defibrillator is kept in a secure metal cabinet and, by ringing 999, the emergency services will ensure people have the access code in the event of an emergency. Chair of the Parish Council, Cllr Geoff Fuller, said: “Steady progress has been made in our journey towards excellent coverage of defibrillators in Westfield and I am delighted to say that this latest installation is the last in our programme of works. Defibrillators are now live 24/7 at Elm Tree Avenue, Mardons Club, the Fire Station and the Westfield Doctors’ Surgery on Waterford Park and have already been put to good use. We know just how valuable this equipment is in saving lives. 28 - The Westfield Warbler
“Our thanks to the Westfield Surgery for working with us and allowing the installation outside their building. Thanks to the Westfield Allotment and Garden Society (WAGS) who have so public-spiritedly taken on the weekly checks which are vital for the defibrillator to remain operational and finally many thanks to A. F. Denning for installing the equipment free of charge, it is good to see such amazing evidence of community spirit in Westfield.”

The
Parish Clerk A
s I write this article we are enjoying a spell of beautiful weather, which helps to focus our minds on the forthcoming Westfield Front Garden competition. Last year’s winners really set the standard and we look forward to an equally good contest this year. Our thanks to Bath College’s Somer Valley Campus for providing the judge whose expertise and time is much appreciated. Grass cutting of public amenity land continues to raise difficulties and the Parish Council hosted a series of meetings with Bath and North East Somerset Council and residents of the roads most severely impacted by the lack of grass cutting in Westfield. Funding cuts to the provision of youth services means that from October, Bath and North East
Somerset Council will no longer fund the local youth club which meets on a Tuesday evening at the Methodist Church Hall in Westfield. The Parish Council has taken part in a series of meetings to explore the possibility of forming a ‘cluster group’ with other like-minded parishes to help retain a youth service in Westfield. We are delighted to say that the final defibrillator in our installation programme went live in June. Situated outside the Westfield Surgery, the defibrillator is available 24/7. By ringing 999 the emergency services will give the access code in times of need. A referendum in relation to the adoption of the Westfield Neighbourhood Plan will be held on 6th September. Written by local residents following a series of consultations, this is an important document to shape the future of Westfield. It is lovely to see the Elm tree, which we planted two years ago to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday, flourishing at Norton Hill Recreation Ground. I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer.
Lesley Welch Parish Clerk
The Neighbourhood Plan is here You will have seen several articles in previous Warblers for the Neighbourhood Plan, and it has taken a group of volunteers some three years to put together.
that people find important about where they live. The referendum will take place on 6th September and you should have already received a polling card.
It has been checked and re-checked by both the working group and officers at B&NES. Now it has been passed by an external examiner and we are delighted to say that it is in its final version and is ready for referendum for you, the residents of Westfield, to have your say.
This is YOUR plan, so please take the time to look into this and to place your vote. The Plan is available on our website: www.westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk or a hard copy is available in the foyer of the Oval Office, Cobblers Way, Westfield or Bath Central Library or One Stop Shop, Manvers Street, Bath.
This document is an important one for Westfield as it has an impact on how our environment is managed, in terms of planning, natural resources, parking and other issues
If you have any questions about the document please get in touch with us on 01761 410669 or council@ westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk
