from IGU Magazine October 2016

x The latest editions
of two of IGU’s flagship reports, the IGU World LNG Report and the IGU Wholesale Gas Price Survey have recently been published to both industry and media recognition.
As the IGU committees are moving into their third round of meetings, we are half way into the triennium. All committees are progressing well with their work and have started to prepare for the WGC 2018 Call for Papers to be issued in April 2017.
Changes in organisation
The Coordination Committee leadership team has a new face on board. After Mel Ydreos assumed the position of IGU’s Executive Director of Public Affairs, Rod Rinholm joined
the team as Acting Coordination Committee (CC) Chair. Mel is still formally CC Chair, but Rod is taking care of the day-to-day activities of the Coordination Committee. This is of particular importance as preparations continue for WGC 2018 in Washington DC. As an experienced executive with considerable international experience and participation in many IGUrelated activities, Rod is well known to the committees and IGU. He was appointed in June and has used this time to get to know the committee chairs and the committee work.
IGU webcast
The IGU Webcast Live from Berlin was organised by the Marketing and Communications committee in February and was a great success. There was substantial interest and more than 100 participants signed up. A new IGU Webcast Live from Amsterdam will be organised in relation to the IGU Council meeting in Amsterdam in October. The theme will be clean air and the role of natural gas in a sustainable energy future, featuring three guests: Tjerk Wagenaar, Director of Nature & Environment, a leading Dutch NGO; Mel Ydreos, Executive Director of Pubic Affairs, IGU; and Coby van der Linde, Director of the Clingendael International Energy Programme (CIEP).
IGU publications
The first IGU committee report for the triennium, the IGU World LNG Report, was released at the LNG 18 Conference and Exhibition in Perth, Australia, and received a lot of attention including from the media. The report is one of the IGU’s flagship publications and widely recognised in many circles both inside and outside the industry.
The second committee report came in May. The 2016 IGU Wholesale Gas Price Survey is also a well-known and recognised IGU flagship report and is the eighth to be undertaken in a series which began 10 years ago. The eight surveys have been carried out by the IGU Strategy Committee and have confirmed the significant changes in wholesale price formation mechanisms during a period of key developments and upheaval in the global gas market. With the aim to establish a baseline survey on wholesale price formation mechanisms around the world, data from over 100 countries has been collated and analysed.
The latest survey shows that in 2015 gas-ongas competition (GOG) continued to increase its share in Europe, spot LNG imports and in India’s domestic pricing. Meanwhile, oil-linked prices also increased its share marginally as the changes in
Europe and LNG imports were more than offset by domestic pricing reforms in China. With the advent of US LNG exports and the current surplus of LNG, more changes in pricing mechanisms are expected over the next few years.
If you haven’t read it yet, the report is available at www.igu.org. This magazine also features an article summarising the findings.
2016 IGU Human Capital Survey
The IGU Task Force, Workforce Development has invited human resources professionals to participate in the 2016 IGU Human Capital Survey – the first step in a three-year integrated project that will be carried out during the current IGU Triennium. The aim is to deliver a strategic response to the challenges of attracting, developing and retaining talent for the global gas industry. The survey results will be complemented with interviews of senior industry experts, interviews with young professionals from the gas industry, and company HR best practice examples.
