iGuzzini The History and Company Philosophy

The quality of the urban space lighting elements presented here is undoubtedly synonymous with beauty, which is a direct result of the care and attention to detail implemented during the design process, a feature on which the iGuzzini company philosophy has always been based. Less evident is the fact that behind this visual quality lies a real financial advantage in terms of the amount of energy saved by using an optic which also preserves the environment, respects the health of citizens and offers increased safety for the entire urban community. Correct optic design is, in fact, the main reason for the financial and energyrelated savings achieved: an optimal luminous flux emission can be obtained, which means the number of fixtures used can be limited to only those which are absolutely necessary. As a result the distance between fixtures is increased, thereby overcoming the more serious effects of environmental light pollution and the harm caused to individuals by intrusive light entering their homes. This lighting quality is also a guarantee against glare, which is always the cause of inconvenience in pedestrian areas and can become an actual hazard on roads or in areas with heavy traffic. Safety during maintenance procedures and in the management of the systems is assured through various awards, in the form of approvals from third parties such as the prestigious ENEC organisation. The usual wide range of options offered and the extreme flexibility of these options have enabled real product customisation based on even the most unusual requirements and features. Each product becomes a rare and precious tool in the hands of the designer as he prepares to design a lighting plan for any urban landscape, modern or ancient, in any geographical conditions or climate.

We have worked in and for “light” since 1958. This was the year when the Harvey Creazioni, a small company that produced lamps and chandeliers, was founded. Today we are the premiere Italian manufacturer in the “Lighting” market, and we rank among the top European manufacturers. We want be the creators of good lighting: light that shines in a room, a house, a building, a museum, a cathedral, a company, a plaza, an airport, and, yes . . . even an entire city. Good lighting has to be created with the awareness that it has to integrate with its environment, taking care not to invade it, darken it, or violate it. Light must be respected, and light has to, in turn, respect the nature of people and things. The iGuzzini mission is therefore to study light, to know light and to make it known; improving the integration with architecture through industrial design. Because of this, a large part of what we do is to offer consultation on lighting techniques, both in the design phase and as an after-sales service.

Creativity and innovation

Design

The culture of industrial design is one of the main values within the iGuzzini company philosophy. In 1991, the ADI (the Association for Industrial Design) recognised the activities of the company by presenting it with the highest honour in the sector, the Compasso d’Oro, “for the development of a highly coherent design and production philosophy throughout the years, in which the culture of Design has been both a common denominator and an element of distinction”.

The 1991 prize followed the 1989 award and paved the way for the 1999 award, but the motivation of that year effectively underlined the Design factor as an “element of distinction”, drawing attention to the precise commitment to combining technological innovation with aesthetic/shape-related research, which has made the company so recognisable against the current landscape.

Special products

Through its collaboration with the company’s own technicians and many prestigious designers, iGuzzini has been gaining international recognition for years, for example the company received the IF Design Award from the Industrie Forum Design organisation in 1987, 1989, 1997 and 2006.

One of the most significant phenomena to occur in the industrial production sector in recent years is customisation, or the opportunity of providing a response to specific situations with the implementation of special products. An example of this situation was when the special Colour Woody model was created for the Kowloon area of Hong Kong. The requirement in this case was the insertion of lighting fixtures in an environmental context which was characterised by special lighting effects, implemented every day at set times during the night, while maintaining the high quality of the basic lighting provided during the remaining night time hours.

A high resistance to wind was also requested (the wind can reach speeds of 300 km/h in this location), in addition to a system for the diffusion of sound, to be used during exhibitions and events. The flexibility guaranteed by the high performance levels of the implemented technology means that in this case - as in many other cases - the special requests were fully satisfied by transforming the standard solution into a unique and customised system.

Improved colour rendering Through an expert use of light, the features of the space and of the architecture itself have been highlighted. Each light source was chosen after consideration of the specific features of the different locations. If, in ancient times, people could talk about a ‘genius loci’ when referring to a particular spirit conferring a special atmosphere on a single space, we could now use the term ‘genius lucis’ to describe the special lighting requirements of the space, because each space has its own light-related needs.

4

Visual comfort

For example, the mainly warm coloured lighting from sodium lamps may be suited to a historical environment, while a halide lamp with its cold light is better suited to a more modern architectural setting. The wide choice of solutions therefore provides improved colour rendering and optimises the lighting design according to individual cases.

Visual comfort is considered in the creation of lighting fixtures which prevent unpleasant glare from occurring. If, generally speaking, this is a regular measure taken to eliminate discomfort, it becomes an indispensable feature in urban environments where glare along traffic-heavy streets can become a real hazard for motorists and pedestrians alike.

This hazard can easily be avoided through the use of lighting fixtures fitted with certain accessories, for example spill-rings, baffles and indirect lighting systems, which offer ideal solutions for every type of product and guarantee increased safety without interfering with the aesthetic features of the fixture itself.

Semi-cylindrical illuminance The following 4 zones can be identified according to the distance between people in a given area: - the “intimate” zone - the “personal” zone - the “social interaction” zone - the “public” zone. The public zone is the area involved in the consideration of safety within green spaces. In fact, the minimum distance which allows a person with a normal level of vigilance to take evasive or defensive action is approximately 4 m. Reduced distances affect the actual performance of reactive behaviour.

Ev

Safety for citizens When discussing public spaces, the light quality offered directly concerns the safety of the citizens who use the space. The night-time illumination of public spaces which eliminates dangerous shadowy areas becomes more than a single element bringing peace of mind to the people using that space.

In many cases, it provides an ideal opportunity to restore run-down areas or places with dubious nighttime access to the community. Good lighting can therefore keep watch over our safety at the times when we need it most.

Recanati urban lighting plan

Recanati (Mc) - Italy: view

Recanati project

If an Urban Development Plan is used to organise building expansion according to a basic design, an urban lighting plan has the task of organising the lighting of urban areas, acting on the desire to improve the quality of life of the citizens where safety is concerned on one hand and the aesthetic image of the city at night on the other. The lighting technology solutions chosen for an urban lighting plan firstly follow the morphological and environmental characteristics of each area, while remaining aware of the individual features and highlighting the historical and regional heritage of the area.

6

The plan then involves the selection of the hardware, lighting fixtures and systems used to achieve the defined objectives effectively, according to the specific installation geometry in the area. Particular attention is paid to the integration between the lighting system and the pre-existing context, and how the systems fit alongside any urban furniture which is already present or which is due to be installed.

The main director of this plan, the professional responsible for the construction of the general plan, can utilise the skills of local technicians and lighting technology experts who are able to implement the plan and provide a response to even the most varied requirements. The Recanati Project in 2003 was truly the exemplification of all these steps. Mr Terzi, an internationallyrenowned architect, in collaboration with local technicians and the Local Services, orchestrated an urban lighting plan which took account of the historical buildings in the city.

The most important consideration of them all was the ancient wall which surrounds the city and leaves its imprint on the urban geometry. The company was able to collate all the requirements of the project and provide a response using the hardware which was most suited to the final implementation. The flexibility of the lighting fixtures, guaranteed by the multitude of solutions available, plays a determining role in making iGuzzini a well-prepared and reliable partner in the implementation of any urban lighting plan.

Correct optic

SPILL RING

Two optics show how a well thought-out design can provide diametrically opposite results: in the first case, the light beams emitted by the lamp are reflected by the optic without invading the shadowy area of the spill ring, directing all the light outside the fixture; in the second, unsuitable design leads to the obstruction of the rays emitted, which in turn causes the fixture to become dangerously overheated. The optics are created in anodised aluminium so that the natural shine of the material remains unaltered over time.

Efficiency of the reflectors

The consideration given to the energy saving policy, environmental impact and the limiting of costs (and thereby taxpayers’ contributions) in relation to the optics used in public areas directly concerns the quality of the fixtures used in urban areas. Technological evolution in the creation of increasingly refined optics which help to prevent light from being wasted depends directly on the quality of the production and frequent assessment procedures used at the various processing stages.

8

The effect of this quality directly determines the quantity of elements used: highly-evolved optics and fixtures are, in fact, capable of performing their functions more efficiently, thereby increasing the distance between one element and another and reducing the total number of fixtures used, up to a total saving of 9 units per illuminated km (as detailed in the above table), with all the resulting benefits in terms of electricity consumed and costs incurred.

Optical pollution

The link mankind has with the sky is of an atavistic nature. Interfering with this relationship leads to the disruption of the natural balance, not only for humans, but also for plants and animals. In the convention which took place in Paris in 1992, UNESCO highlighted the enormous damage caused to the night sky by excessive artificial light and declared that the starry sky was a piece of heritage to be looked after in a responsible manner. Light pollution, in addition to being responsible for this, also causes 30% of the energy supplied (data provided by the Dark Sky Association) for the illumination of cities to be wasted.

10

In order to resolve the problem, it is not necessary to plunge the cities into darkness, but simply to adopt rules for the implementation of lighting using fixtures which, through concentrated and asymmetrical optics, baffle screens and fresnel lenses, are capable of providing light without increasing the already high level of light pollution. It is not sufficient simply to use these fixtures; they must also be installed and maintained correctly in order to guarantee an effective limitation of lighting pollution.

The main effects of optical pollution are recognisable both on a general environmental level, through the alterations and mutations in the natural development of living species’ vital activities, and in everyday experience, where glare effects can limit and jeopardise our mobility within cities (this is true of both traffic-laden and pedestrian streets). The more private and personal phenomenon of intrusive light is also an issue.

It has actually been calculated that excess light produced by malfunctioning light sources not only damages the outdoor environment, but penetrates private dwellings in the form of intrusive light, altering the circadian rhythms of the inhabitants and seriously affecting their psychological and physical well-being. Through the implementation of fixtures which are capable of overcoming this type of disturbance, the battle against light pollution (in addition to improving the environment, saving energy and reducing costs) is aimed at preventing the phenomenon and safeguarding health.

The safety certification of the fixtures is demonstrated by the allocation of various seals, such as the CE brand and ENEC approval. In contrast with the former seal, which is obtained as a result of the company's self-certification process, ENEC approval is assigned by third parties only after close examination involving a strict series of checks based on the relevant European Regulations (EN), through a Quality Assessment System which conforms to Regulations UNI EN ISO 9002.

The insertion of elements such as the switch and fuses between operating parts, although not compulsory according to current legislation, is a guarantee of simple and rapid maintenance and provides further assurance of the safety of the fixtures.

An optic made using quality materials and created using advanced techniques will stand the test of time, which is a guarantee that its performance levels will be maintained and that the initial reliability data will remain unaltered. The quality of the optics also ensures that maintenance work will be performed in the quickest time possible, thus avoiding more complicated and laborious procedures which could have a detrimental effect on the output of the lamps.

The desire to offer high quality standards means that liquid paint is more likely to be selected, rather than powder application. Liquid paint is undoubtedly more expensive, but it offers decidedly superior performance efficiency: it is more compact, more uniform and provides greater resistance to bad weather and ultraviolet rays. It may also be applied in a very fine layer (60/80 microns compared with 150 microns for powder applications), enabling the product design to remain exactly the same, without any corners being rounded off and without altering the smallest details of the design.

Lighting implementation within a town/city centre is much more than a simple functional lighting requirement: it gives a new and unusual appearance to the city, which is completely different from the familiar daytime perspective.

Consequently, the lighting plans must take account of the smallest details of each individual situation, highlighting artistic heritage, creating charming atmospheres which are capable of inspiring emotion, and guaranteeing the safety offered by the light itself through the avoidance of the dangers which may lurk in dark areas.

The safety of the systems, the attention to detail evident in the design of the fixtures and the sheer number of solutions on offer facilitate the achievement of each objective identified in the lighting implementation design process

In this way, respect for the existing structures has been combined with technological innovation and an optimal centre-to centre distance between fixtures has been achieved, thus creating a uniform light, avoiding the introduction of unsuitable poles and also preventing intrusive light from filtering into private residences. The lighting of the square involved accenting the architectural details of historical structures such as the fountain, this time using all the optic options offered by MaxiWoody. In order to limit the number of poles used and to avoid direct glare without departing from the functional illumination of pedestrian areas, MultiWoody was used. This enabled several fixtures to be installed easily on a single support.

When formulating a design for the Plaza Costituci贸n in Malaga, it was impossible to ignore its links with existing historical features. Via Larios, for example, the street leading to the square, contains a series of historical fixtures which have strong connotations in the collective memory of the citizens; the intention was to create a sense of harmony between this feature and the contemporary technology applied in the design. A solution was identified using the ceiling-mounted Platea positioned underneath the eaves, with a blade-of-light effect optic and a source providing white light.

In urban green spaces, lit pathways become the most effective way of ensuring the community benefits from areas which would otherwise become almost deserted at night. Path lighting, lit walkways and special effects achieved using a wide range of options are used to restore the green space to the city and its inhabitants as a precious element of city living, even at night, without the feeling of being at risk.

Urban green space

In the Viale Marconi park in Como, the main objective was to give a new lease of life to an area in the city which is seldom used at night. This was balanced with the desire to enhance the lighting with a welldesigned selection and to highlight the structure at the end of the park.

The most efficient response to these requirements was the implementation of the Nuvola system, winner of the Compasso d’Oro prize for design which was awarded to the company and to the designer Renzo Piano. This system is used to create a uniform yet aesthetically pleasing and functional light both horizontally and vertically, highlighting the Volta Temple at the end of the park while avoiding the risk of glare.

The network of roads which comprise the thoroughfare traffic circulation is one of the most delicate and important parts in the life of a city. Illumination becomes an indispensable element which it is not possible to do without. It is more important than ever before that the choice of fixtures placed along the thoroughfares is not the result of distracted consideration. The fixtures must be suited to the requirements of the situation and safety is the primary concern.

As a result, the issue of light pollution, the quality of the optics, and the possibility of a correct illumination which does not waste precious light in this case are elements which become more fundamental than ever for the designers and for the inhabitants of the city who use the road network.

To celebrate the centenary of the Metro (the underground system in Paris), nine of the stations were refurbished and social themes implemented, the work being entrusted to internationallyrenowned planners and designers. The Villejuif station was allocated to the architect Mario Cucinella who, together with iGuzzini, orchestrated a design around the theme of sport. The lighting selections involve warm lighting for the platforms, in order to guarantee a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere for the passengers, and a colder lighting used to illuminate the graphics of various sporting images displayed on the walls and on the ceiling.

Platea fixtures were chosen for the light directed towards the platform and Woody fixtures for the light directed at the walls and the ceiling. The fixtures are arranged in groups of four and mounted on metal supports, where emergency lights and loudspeakers are also located.

A large area like the areas usually used for city transport services could become an urban empty place at night without a suitable illumination system. This can be overcome easily with the implementation of a special and carefully considered project which is capable of highlighting and emphasising the presence of these large and fundamental spaces within the fabric of the city, because light can breathe life into the largest of spaces, while darkness or bad lighting turns it into a useless - if not dangerous - void.

Large areas - Transportation

The Milan Fair in Rho-Pero, designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and officially opened in March 2005, is centred inside a large architectural ‘rippling sail’, which is one and a half kilometres long. Two paths branch out under the ‘sail’: one at zero altitude for guests wishing to visit the eight pavilions (the height of which varies between 7 and 10 - 12 metres); the other is at an altitude of six metres and leads to the bar, the meeting room and other function rooms.

During the day, the complete transparency of the structure allows natural light to penetrate and illuminate the area, while at night a simple yet effective design devised by Fuksas in partnership with iGuzzini provides the lighting. In the pavilion zone the Lavinia system was used and street optics attached, both for 400W direct lighting and 250W indirect lighting, in order to guarantee an average of 300 lux on the ground.

The altimetric progress of the sail is particularly winding, with variations ranging between zero and 10 - 12 metres and consisting of continuous peaks and troughs. A double-arm Lavinia system was used here, in the same colour as the roof so as to guarantee the uniformity of the assembly. An asymmetrical flood optic was fitted to this fixture with 250W metal halogen light sources. Platea 250W fixtures with asymmetrical optics were used to complete the outdoor design.

When light is applied to an important architectural structure, it becomes a way of interpreting the beauty and history of the structure itself. Fixtures which are capable of emphasising buildings, highlighting the interplay between ‘full’ and ‘empty’ used in the construction, fixtures with personality which are also discreet, in the hands of a designer become precious instruments which can be used to discover a special way of experiencing the historical memory of a city and its treasures.

Blood Cathedral

The magnificent Cathedral in Saint Petersburg and the area encompassing the buildings in front of it, presented an interesting challenge when planning the lighting scheme. Its RussianByzantine style, characterised by the exquisite onion-shaped dome, imposing bell tower and a variety of spires, required carefully designed illumination in order to emphasise the richness of the elements without disrupting the balance between the different parts of the architectural structure.

The dramatic sculpted effects of the elements were highlighted using superspot versions of MaxiWoody projectors and Platea projectors with flood optics, carefully positioned on the roof in strategic positions so as to obtain the desired theatrical effect; Radius fixtures were used to illuminate the railings. The inside of the bell tower was illuminated using Radius fixtures with luminous flux variance, thereby achieving a dynamic effect aimed at emphasising the vertical building which is such an important symbol of the historical memory of the city.

The finishing touches were provided by MaxiWoody fixtures with refractor optics, which were mounted on poles or positioned on the roofs of the buildings along the Griboedov canal and used to project the elliptical beams of light illuminating the building facades.

The design was developed based on the idea of multiple families of fixtures having the same design concept, but offering a vast range of different functions and potential applications. The extensive range, in part a result of pole customisation option and the basic visual aspect of the products (Scandinavian design is softened by the Mediterranean culture of iGuzzini), facilitates application projects which are consistent in the shapes and styles of the lighting fittings used but different (and complete) in terms of performance quality.

The diffusers, horizontal rings, vertical bars and the decorative aluminium cap can be combined and used in such a way as to create a full spectrum of style options.

Fixtures in the Light Up Walk Professional series are available with a wide range of accessories, which can be used to limit the impact of the luminous flux emitted by the product in terms of light pollution.

iGuzzini The History and Company Philosophy
