Research

Research iGuzzini has always been sensitive to needs and requirements of the market; the Company utilizes its technical and cultural lighting know-how to offer highly innovative instruments that are able to knowingly combine LED technology, design, and the top quality that has always accompanied iGuzzini products. Today’s modern life has ever more risks tied to pollution and the need to moderate the use of traditional energy sources. We need to be more and more vigilant when it comes to the environment. Lighting, therefore, has to contribute to energy savings and provide a solution to the rising costs of electricity, all the while yielding the same lighting efficiency as always. LED technology single-handedly takes on this role. At first used for signalling and indicator lighting, it has radically changed, becoming today’s “light of the future”. LEDs have innovative and advanced technical features, as well as a very small size, which allow the products to be inserted into any light fitting. LEDs are therefore the most effective alternative to traditional lamps (incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen) when lighting interiors and exterior public, industrial and private areas.

It is estimated that the luminous efficiency of LED's will double in 5 years and almost triple in 13 years, consequently increasing the energy saving.

An LED (“Light Emitting Diode”) has low energy consumption and high potential yield. Produced and built without interior filaments (which are more fragile and subject to rupture), or mobile parts, LEDs ensure a longer life and more dependability compared to other lamps

Via special devices (chips) it is possible to insert and manage a large number of LEDs in one fitting at the same time (even different coloured LEDs). This guarantees maximum customization and management of light and colour to create beautiful light scenery.

The development process of LED products is complex and delicate. It takes attentive quality controls to produce a fitting that complies with requirements. Therefore iGuzzini has controls at each step of the production process in order to produce fittings with top quality and top performance. • Designs optics in thermoplastic material • Selects the best LEDs on the market • Utilizes advanced technology for printed circuit boards • Designs dissipators, adapting them to the different needs of industrial designers • Designs drivers to control the technical specifications of chip producers Uses the most suitable communication buses for how the product will be used (DALI, DMX, LON, ecc…) • Develops innovative software that is able to make control panels and LED management simple • Offers highly functional accessories that create eclectic light direction, all the while respecting safety and visual comfort

In order to guarantee the LED fittings' top efficiency and maximum quality, iGuzzini uses a careful binning process for each solution, an accurate control system, and a qualitative selection of LEDs that will be used based upon the colour temperature of each. A colour range for each LED is determined so that the colour temperature will remain constant.

Energy Saving

-CO2 ReLighting the route to sustainability

Saving Energy is an issue that requires attention and dedication. As a testament to our devotion to energy savings, "-CO2 ReLighting" was born. This project's objective is light quality by using less energy, and therefore less CO2 emissions. To do this, iGuzzini has made fittings and lighting systems that use technology to contain the amount of energy that is used and therefore to reduce pollution:

High efficiency lamps, high yield optics and electronic components that can connect networks with control systems in order to manage fittings. We can thus reduce energy requirements by using electricity in adequate quantities and only when it is truly needed.

Comparison between LED products and traditional light sources (fluorescent - sodium vapours) All these products use last-generation LED's and optics, giving a significant contribution to energy saving while ensuring high levels of luminous efficiency.

It is a spotlight with linear compact design that integrates the optical assembly and the control gear in the same element. Available in three sizes, Sydecar is characterised by extreme flexibility and very high performances. The wide selection of light sources, the optics, the interchangeable reflectors and the large range of accessories give life to versatile, lively lighting directions to meet the special requirements of retail areas with high performances and clear design to appeal to customers.

Designed to ensure maximum integration and safe use, the body of the luminaire can rotate in both directions. The mechanical locks for aiming and the focusing device ensure "exact" lighting directions. Soft, sinuous lines for an innovative dynamic design that respects and exalts the aesthetical features, favouring installation in different spaces: museums, boutiques and showrooms. Lux is a lighting fixture with a strong personality. Available with long rod, short rod and in surface-mounted version, it is characterised by the special articulation of the optical assembly, which ensures the adjustability of the light beam, and the graduated scale, which allows for the exact control of the luminous direction.

Total installation costs The payback of the investment is less than 3 years for a mercury installation and 5 years for sodium installations. After 10 years the expected saving of running costs is 800 € (vs. mercury) and 365 € (vs. sodium) per luminaire. Energy saving is only one of the advantages delivered by luminaires with innovative technologies, such as LEDs, the highest benefit being the reduction of running costs compared with traditional light sources.

The products use a highly innovative driver. The LED operation can be modified by selecting the preferred mode from the four options described below.

Self-learning profile The self-learning profile provides for midnight detection thanks to a special algorithm. By reducing the wattage of the fitting according to the recommended profile, the average saving is +20%, in addition to the saving obtained by using the systems.

The profile permits to modify the wattage emitted in max. 6 steps and is based on the latitude and longitude of Rome. Customised profiles can be created with a specific software, for midnight detection in the main cities of the world.

Moreover, the operation mode can be customised and saved in the driver memory using a USB interface.

in situations for which no statistical data is available on the variation of vehicular traffic during the night or on the number of accidents.

Software for customised cycles In addition to 4 default operation modes, scenes and profiles can be programmed as desired, with or without self-learning, using a dedicated software. The modification is saved in a USB interface. By inserting the USB in the connector of the fitting, the profile will replace the default profile in operation. This operation may be carried out either in the laboratory or directly on the site.

Twilight photocell The well-timed switch-on of the installations is an often neglected source of saving. By switching on the luminaire after twilight, a saving of approx. 1 hour energy a day can be obtained, corresponding to 10% of the total operation hours.

The products equipped with the innovative street optics for LED guarantee very high performances and total safety over time and in difficult environmental situations. High reliability is ensured by the electronic control gear, the innovative LED technology and the special liquid paint treatment of the fittings. The environmental operation temperature ranges from -25Â°C to +32Â°C, but the LED temperature control system enlarges the operation range with a partial reduction of the emitted flux.

Extreme operating conditions The products adjust their operation to the environmental temperature conditions. Because of the low junction temperature of LEDs and the temperature control system, the lighting fixtures can work in extreme environmental conditions, unlike for instance with fluorescence.

Paint treatment The special liquid paint treatment used for the fixtures is much more efficient than powder paint. It is more compact and uniform, with higher resistance to weather agents and UV radiation, ensuring a higher uniformity of the RAL colour. The saline fog tests carried out in the iGuzzini laboratory ensure the total reliability of the paint treatment.

Vibration test

LED temperature control system In view of the extreme operation conditions, the electronic circuit monitors the LED temperature continuously, varying the current intensity to maintain the average life LED unchanged. If the internal temperature increases, the current is automatically reduced to avoid the overheating of the LED junction temperature.

The products undergo the vibration test for 60 minutes with constant excitation with 4 - 8 Hz frequency, with longitudinal axis of the prototype both parallel and perpendicular to the vibration direction. The prototypes have proved to be perfectly working. The vibration test simulates the stress suffered by street lighting luminaires because of vehicular traffic, subways, railway stations, etc.

• Lighting system for lighting pathways and wall-mounted fittings for use with LEDs. • Pathway lighting models have a body, a support rod, and either a base for ground installation or a spike to bury the fitting into the ground. The fitting is a polymetacrylic cube; body supports are made of Zama 15, support rods are made of AISI 304 stainless steel with a granolithic and passivation treatment; spike (for ground spike versions) made of polypropylene; double PG11 cable gland made of polyamide. • Wall- mounted versions have a screen and base for support. The innovative ribbed screen with pyramidal refractor allows Glim Cube to generate special photometric distributions to define and exalt architectural spaces and green areas.

The special combination of the curved screen and of the powerful LED when applied as wall-washers generates excellent uniformity on walls without light spotting.

The versions with stainless steel arms are particularly suitable when lighting passageways and pathways in residential areas, guaranteeing minimal intrusiveness of the lighting body.

The wall-mounting solutions combined together allow users to obtain various effects in residential areas, wellness centres, hotels, and resort areas. They optimize energy savings and lengthen maintenance cycle times.

The rectangular wall-mounting has an elliptical distribution which gives off grazed lighting in parks and exterior green areas.

Spot Optic (S) It provides accent light and allows to balance horizontal and vertical illuminance values in residential contexts. The mini body (BC05 - 6x0,8W LED) can illuminate a wall with min. 12 lux at 4 m distance. The vertical and horizontal adjustability of the optic allows for directing the light according to the project requirements.

Flood Optic (F) When installed at heights from 4 to 10 m, it guarantees uniform illuminance with horizontal distribution of the luminous flow. It finds its ideal application in mall entrances, offices and residential areas. Two mini body products (BC15 - 6x0,8W LED) can illuminate an area of about 15 m2 with 18 lux average illuminance. The illuminance of vertical walls is obtained by combining the optic with the refractor for elliptical distribution of the luminous flow (50°x15°). The vertical and horizontal adjustability of the optic allows for directing the light according to the project requirements.

A state-of-the-art line of recessed luminaires for wall and floor installation in exteriors. Ledplus fittings are equipped with a vast number of LED's - white, coloured, and RGB DALI - that accentuate architectural details, walkways and routes. Walking surfaces become more visible, walls and spaces come to life with lights and colours. The light management systems allow Ledplus to originate fascinating scenographies: Colour Dynamic Quick creates dynamic lighting effects,

while Colour Quick originates suggestive chromatic sequence by mixing the different colours. The fittings of the Ledplus collection, characterised by low consumption, resistance to shocks and vibrations, long life and practically no maintenance, are the ideal solution for the most diverse types of applications, including areas that are difficult to access.

• Indicator fittings for use with LED lamps normally applied either in single colour indicator lighting, or indicator lighting with RGB, and wall-washer effects onto the ground. • Ledplus is installed as a recessed fitting into walls or into the ground. • Ledplus has a body (round and square, in two sizes; and linear, in three sizes) a casing (short version h=100mm, tall version h=150mm) and frame. • Version round and square: the body of the fitting is made of highly resistant thermoplastic material. • Version linear: extruded aluminium body and die-cast black painted end caps. • Ledplus has an AISI 304 stainless steel frame which is 2,5 mm thick, with welded rivets, and two A2 stainless steel captive screws that

connect the body to the chassis. The exterior glass is 10 mm-thick tempered sodium calcium (8 mm for round or square 65 mm versions). The interior glass is tempered opaline sodium calcium 3 mm-thick glass (black aluminium disc for LED versions). Black silicone watertight gaskets; AISI 304 machined stainless steel to secure the body to the frame+glass; anti-glare spill-ring made of thermoplastic material for LED versions. • Stainless steel cable clamps. PG11 cable clamps for linear and round/square 138 mm versions. • AISI 304 stainless steel M14x1 cable clamp for round/square 65 mm versions.

• Ledplus is provided with a 300 mm-long connecting cable, of the H05RNF type: 2x1 mm2 for the monochromatic version, and 4x1 mm2 for the RGB version. All power cables have a pull and transpiration prevention device • 1000 kg load resistance (500 kg for the version with the plastic H=150mm chassis), in compliance with EN60598-2-13 standards. • The versions with monochromatic and RGB indicator lighting are equipped with a 24Vdc electronic multiLED plate. • The versions with LEDs used for lighting are equipped with a LED ciurcuit and a 220-240Vac power supply (the 65mm round and square items need an external power supply).

Garden casing

• The versions with LEDs used for lighting have plastic lenses with 10° cones; 355° orientation on the vertical axis (only for square and round versions) and ±10° inclination on the horizontal axis (±7° for the 65mm round/square versions and all linear versions). • Control architectures: Colour Equalizer, Colour Quick, Colour Dynamic Quick, to control RGB models, and Effect Equalizer, for to set up the monochromatic LEDs. • Round and square versions: H=100mm painted aluminium alloy barrel chassis, to be ordered separately, for installation into walls or the ground, complete with end caps. Hight version H=150mm is available in plastic material for use in gardens.

Light has always had a fundamental role. And it's on light that iGuzzini has founded its corporate identity and developed its research. Either natural or artificial, light is part of our life and affects our biological rhythms and daily activities. Over the years iGuzzini has carried out an intense research programme that has led to the development of lighting management systems to take full advantage of correct lighting.

Lighting management systems

Back in 1988 the investigation started with Sivra; in collaboration with Spazio S.a.S of Milan, the National Research Institute, the Lighting Research Center of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy and Futuro of Florence. The project demonstrated the importance of correct lighting management in work activities. Originally developed as a solution to problems encountered in enclosed

settings, Sivra (Variable Lighting System with Automatic Regulation) showed that the use of light can stimulate the human body, improve concentration and productivity skills. Sivra is the first concrete result of the investigation, which has continued uninterrupted since then.

Natural light, in its daily rhythm, can be considered lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very clock, producing scientifically measured psychological and biological effects on human beings. The iGuzzini biodynamic lighting systems reproduce, in areas where they are installed, Bright Light and dynamic light. Bright Light is light that is, by virtue of very intense lighting (over 2500 lux), able to augment the production of hormones in our bodies during the hours we are awake. The desire to sleep will diminish, making us more active and receptive to external stimuli, positively influencing our mental states and improving our mood without producing stress.

Dynamic light, changes lighting levels and colour temperatures. It increases the stimulating capability of the space and it keeps our minds active. This is an important issue if you consider that today the majority of work spaces are not the slightest stimulating. Dynamic light also creates a temporary dimension just like sunlight, giving us a chronological measurement of time.

The standard buttons are used to adjust the luminous intensity and switch on/off the light sources. The lux sensor automatically keeps luminous intensity at the setpoint value for high energy saving. Light management is extended to RGB lighting sources. This management can be distributed on all the computers connected to the same LAN network, extending the LonWorks® protocol on TCP/IP. Nowadays spaces are able to give us a multitude of perceptions, cityscapes (no trattino), and movement. With maximum flexibility of space and customization of light direction, Colour Equalizer is an RGB colour management system for lighting. It is used for indication, communication, attraction, and to create effective light sequences and scenery. With a few simple steps, Colour Equalizer controls and manages LED and fluorescent fittings. It builds a fluid universe within which colour designs space, and becomes the subject of attraction. With the Central control version, which can be coupled with the Ambience peripheral control, the system uses plug & play technology for its configuration, which makes it easily and immediately usable. Central has a user display and is managed with a Smart Card which offers and activates a series of set programmes. There is a multitude of effects: dynamic or static, timed, and alternating. SAFETY SEALS In order to guarantee operation and safety, public boards have established specific standards which protect the end user against risks. iGuzzini illuminazione in line with its policy of quality and safety, makes products which comply to these standards. The non-electrified components of the system (such as cover plates, couplings, etc.) cannot be considered as lighting fixtures and therefore are not included in the standards used by the Quality Seal Institutes for their classification. However, all the components of the certified systems have been tested by the said Institutes to ensure compatibility and safety. The luminaires in the iGuzzini collection are designed in conformance with European standards EN 60598-1 and more specific ones, therefore meeting these requirements in full, including the maximum temperatures allowed and considering the ambient temperature to be 25°C. For those countries or areas where the luminaires are to be installed with thermal and microclimatic references which are different from those foreseen (e.g.: swimming pools, premises subject to the risk of explosion, etc…), we invite you to contact us. For the correct installation of the luminaires, always consult the instruction sheet provided with the product.
