Dementia- A Nursing Perspective



Mr. S, aged 75years with the complaints of impairment of intellectual functions, impairment of memory was diagnosed with Dementia by a Neuro-Physician. Mr.Swas was apparently normal for the past 8 years but started to deteriorate in his cognitive functions slowly. Now he is taking anti psychotic drugs, anti-diabetic drugs and anti-hypertensive drugs. After an initial assessment, India Home Health Care’s Psychiatric Nurse has been training the patient thrice a week for the past one year. He takes care of the following: Medical Check List: Once a week the nurse will check the availability of medicines, blood pressure, blood sugar and makes sure that Mr.Stakes the medicines promptly with the help of his wife. Safety check list: To lock the front gate, to wear id card all the time and make sure his wife reminds him to use the toilet periodically. Food check list: To remind Mr. S. to chew the food and eat slowly, to have dry salted lemon pickle (narthangai) along with food to maintain sodium level, to have Nutival coconut oil orally everyday and turmeric supplement in the night time.


Exercise Program: Cognitive exercises and physical exercises are done with Mr. S. 1. Word Practice – Practice of 10 words with each alphabet 2. Photo reminder practice – To identify and relate their relatives properly 3. Simple arithmetic calculations – Additions and subtractions 4. Reading newspaper – Highlighting day to day headline news 5. Walking exercises – Indoor and outdoor walking training 6. Cycling exercises – Stationary bike training for 15 minutes thrice a week 7. Active and Passive exercises for the extremities in standing position Mr. S is leading a normal safe life with above mentioned nursing help, medication and family support. With proper caregiver education and monitoring by a qualified nursing professional at home, dementia patients can lead a comfortable life with the support of a visiting nurse.
