NEO Report

ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT OONAGH CREMINS FIHI

“ 2019 was a strong year for Irish Tourism and Hospitality and as an industry we welcomed over 10.6 million visitors to our country – the vast majority of whom enjoyed genuine Irish hospitality in our hotels, bars, restaurants, cafés and visitor attractions. It was in this context that as an Institute we felt it timely & appropriate as a board in August 2019 to review our aims, objectives, vision and goals for the Institute. Our agreed vision forward was a statement of ongoing intent: “To become the largest professional body for those working and studying in the hospitality & tourism industry in Ireland through recognition of excellence”. Our mission statement was and continues to be to bring our members together through networking, mentoring, events and education. To bring these statements to life means that the executive team of the institute, board members and honorary officers worked to fulfil their responsibilities of professional networking, education and professional development through various events both on and offline in 2019. IHIF SNIMERC

To give you a flavour of these events, we held our national conference themed “Think Different” which enjoyed strong attendance on May 2019. Over the course of the year we held 6 business breakfasts both in Dublin and regionally and welcomed many members and non-members to these events. Theming these events has proved very successful.

HGANOO

November saw our most successful Founders Banquet and Awards ceremony to date, both in terms of numbers attending and applicants across the 13 categories of awards. This visible support by our membership of our events is critical to the success and the sustainability of the Institute and we are very grateful for this. 2019 was also the year that we moved the application process online for the awards and in doing so this provides us with a sustainable process for the next number of years. We count ourselves very fortunate to enjoy the financial support of many companies and organisations who we count among our patron and business partner base.

TNEDISERP

They include our valued patrons Diageo, Aramark, Restaurant Association of Ireland, Unilever Food Solutions, Crystal Air, Mitsubishi Electric, the Irish Times, netffinity, Tierney’s, Broadline Recruitment and the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality at TU Dublin as well as our Business Partners whose services you are encouraged to support.

YB SSERDDA

Membership I am delighted to welcome our new members, patrons and business partners to the Institute and I take this opportunity to mention the many benefits which attach to membership, including networking opportunities at our conferences and social events, and increasing opportunity to gain greater skillsets through training programmes and webinars made available free of charge to members of the institute. Our income streams are currently weighted as follows: Events contribute 57% to total income Patrons, business partners & college collaboration arrangements contribute 24 % to total income Membership contributes 19% to total income.

I wish all of you patrons, business partners, members, student members, fellow members all the very best in 2020 and thank you most sincerely for your friendship, membership and support throughout 2019. Oonagh Cremins FIHI President

YB TNEDISERP

I take this opportunity as well to thank all our Board Members who give of their time and input to the success of the Institute.

HGANOO

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our National Executive team, National Executive Officer Tina Maree, and Cynthia O’ Neill Events & Membership Executive for their hard work and commitment to the Institute.

SNIMERC

Our goals for 2020 are to remain very focused on supporting our industry in the midst of this Covid 19 crisis. Many supports from webinars to dedicated team training have all been made available free of charge by members to our members. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this series of very successful events which has certainly broadened our regional presence and profile.

IHIF

Forward Look Our goal is to balance these income streams more evenly in the next 2 – 3-year period while acknowledging that events will always be a primary source of income. However growing membership at both a patron, business partner, college collaboration level coupled with growing membership income is key to the financial sustainability of the Institute. To mitigate against an anticipated fall in event income in 2020 and beyond our board members along with the NEO are currently working to identify new earned income streams.

SSERDDA

Our current business model is then significantly dependent on events as the main driver of income. In 2019 we maintained our level of membership. To grow our individual membership base is proving challenging for the Institute.

NATIONAL HOSPITALITY BUSINESS MANAGEMENT GAME 2019

2019 saw the introduction of a new format to the Challenges with team Members assuming the role of department heads with the responsibility to produce a strategy for their department and to discuss their plans at an HOD meeting. This meeting was then observed by the Judging Panel. This was the first time to introduce this concept and both the Students and Judges feedback was very positive as it delivered a more effective learning outcome for the participating students. The Game, supported by Dalata Hotel Group, Fáilte Ireland, Russell Partnership and The Irish Hotels Federation, saw the teams complete 3 Challenges which tested the students’ business acumen and management skills in the areas of Business Development strategy and Human Resources.

Challenge One: The teams were asked to produce a strategy for introducing a new restaurant concept into a Dalata Group Hotel. The concept had to be in line with the Dalata brand, appropriate to the target market and be innovative and new. To support their decision making and research, the teams were provided with a copy of the Fáilte Ireland Food and Drink Strategy 2018 to 2023 and evidence was demonstrated in their presentations of research from the report. Challenge Two: The teams assumed the role of Revenue Managers for a 500-bedroom hotel. Utilising industry leading simulation program HOTS, the Students were put into the position of managing a hotel in a virtual environment that mirrored the real world. The students were challenged to make active decisions for one month of trading. Managing the revenue management decisions for the hotel, they were tasked with generating the best contribution and combination of occupancy, RevPAR and ADR for their hotel. Challenge Three: In the final challenge, teams were invited to produce a digital marketing plan and concept for their restaurant launch. The top three teams presented their plan to the Judges and attending delegates. IHI President Matthias Muller FIHI said “Today, our industry witnessed the talent and potential of the next generation of Young Hospitality Managers” The Hospitality Industry provides young graduates with real career opportunities to explore and develop in so many aspects of business: Sales & Marketing, Revenue Management, Finance, Human Resources, Training & Development and Operations, proving the Hospitality Industry is a dynamic and great place to work.

NEO REPORT

2019 was another successful year for the Institute with further improvement in financial stability with strong membership retention and growth. Passing of the Presidential Mantel May 2019 welcomed the 28th and notably the second female President of the Institute, Oonagh Cremins FIHI. Oonagh will be well known to many of our members as a leading expert in all things Revenue Management and we wish her every success in her Presidency. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge outgoing President Matthias Muller FIHI for his dedication and commitment to the Board since 2008, but in particular in the past two years as IHI President. Membership Focus and Events Membership of the Institute continued to grow at a steady pace and retention remained strong. Building on the growth of 2018, 2019 Membership subscriptions increased by 17% with an overall revenue net surplus of â‚Ź32K. This growth was attributed to an increase in member services regionally, targeted Membership development and an uptake in employer Group Membership for their teams. Throughout the year Members had the opportunity to participate in a structured calendar of 12 monthly events focusing on the delivery of Breakfast Seminars, National Hospitality Business Management Game and Student Seminar, Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition, Social Networking events and closing out 2019 with the Founders Banquet and Hospitality Management Awards. Attendance for all events was strong, providing members with valuable learning and the opportunity to network with industry peers. As Members, we encourage you to engage and share with us topics and training you might like us to cover.

Financial Stability 2019 saw further improvement in the financial stability of the Institute producing an income surplus of â‚Ź32K. Income generated comprised of 19% Membership subscriptions, 17% Patrons, 6% Business Partner Memberships, 13% Events, 44% Founders Banquet & Awards and 1% College Collaboration.

Our Patrons continue to be a key financial pillar for IHI and for their continued support and commitment we are extremely grateful. In addition, I wish to also thank our Business Partner Members and Event Sponsors for their continued commitment to the IHI, our work and Members. Member participation and the promotion of professional recognition of the IHI within member teams and colleagues cannot be understated in order to secure the continued financial growth and development of the IHI. Be Progressive – Be Recognised- Be Entertained – Be Part of Us IHI - HNN Hospitality Network News A new look IHI- HNN Hospitality Network News was launched at the Annual General Meeting in May. This new digital copy allows the Institute to share valuable Member, Patrons and Business Partners news, Industry trends and emerging technologies. Since its launch we have witnessed a steady growth of 400+ readers each month. We encourage members to contribute an editorial piece each month as it provides a valuable method of connecting and sharing knowledge with industry colleagues. IHI Hospitality Management Awards 2019 Planning for the 2019 Awards commenced in January with an Awards committee meeting chaired by the President. The objective of the meeting was to review all aspects of the nomination and interview process as part of our commitment to ensure the highest standard of quality and integrity to the awards. As part of the review process, an agreed number of changes were implemented: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Implement an online nomination application platform. Nominees to be involved in the application process. Review and upgrade of the nomination criteria and guidelines. All 13 categories to have specifically revised/designed competency-based interview questions. Select Judging panel for 2019.

Raising the standards year on year has led to 2019 attracting the highest number of nominations to-date with 140 nominations across 18 of the 32 counties. This confirms the prestige of the awards as a much coveted accolade. In total, 39 Judges, all experts within their own field, added a further layer of professionalism, independence and objectivity. Each Judge gave a minimum 2 days of their time with great commitment and for that we thank them all most sincerely. The awards are not about the hotel, restaurant or catering venue. The IHI Hospitality Management Awards are solely in recognition of the individual in their role. In Judging the Nominations, we look at the individual’s professionalism, capability and technical skill, thirst for continual learning coupled with the energy and innovation they bring to their role.

TROPER

These competencies are assessed right throughout the judging process. Feedback from the Judging panel for 2019 was that the standard and presentation of the 60 finalists was exceptional, making their final decision on a winner much more difficult.

The group was established to coordinate the relevant bodies to agree and implement a work programme to address current and future labour supply and skills requirements in the tourism and hospitality sector. With representation by industry, education, training providers and other relevant stakeholders, we have developed a two-year work plan (2019/2020) that focuses on delivery of five target objectives: Career Promotion, Employment Connections, Recruitment & Retention, Curriculum Alignment and Mapping Exiting Provision. As a working group member, the IHI in conjunction with industry partners is leading a review of the availability of part time programmes to up skill supervisors and managers and the preferred method of delivery by employers, “Develop Supervisor and Management Skill Training Through Accessible Platforms”. Pillar One: To complete an analysis of the current Tourism and Hospitality Supervisory and Management Part Time programmes available to up-skill nationally. Pillar Two: To survey industry to better understand training needs and identify future programme development. This survey was conducted across our industry partner members and our sincere thanks to RAI, IHF, AVEA, LVA and the VFI for their contribution. Pillar Three: technologies.

To evaluate training gaps regionally in line with Industry demands and emerging
