PRESIDENT'S NOTE
The last few weeks have been very busy at the IHI with the office having recently moved following two and half years of working remotely. The IHI is now located in its new home at the IMI Business Campus on Sandyford Road, Dublin.
The team has also been very busy with the opening and closing of the 2022 IHI Hospitality Management Awards nomination platform (with the exception of Graduate of the Year). The Judges have now started the process of reviewing the nominations and interviews will be scheduled in the coming weeks.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who took the time to nominate your team members I am very happy to confirm the number of nominations received is on par with 2019, which once again reaffirms the resilience of our industry. It is true the nomination process for the IHI Hospitality Management Awards is quite comprehensive and unlike most other nomination processes, but that in turn is what makes being nominated for one of these prestigious awards so special It is truly an honour to be nominated and the process itself can and should be seen as an asset to the individual's professional growth. I hope that by this point you have marked your calendars for the awards night on the 24th of November at the Clayton Hotel Burlington Road. It is sure to be a very special evening, in particular after a two-year hiatus Booking details for the evening will be sent in the coming weeks

On 15th November 2021, Booking.com launched its first-of-its-kind Travel Sustainable programme.
As a leader in the industry, we believe in making sustainable travel choices easier for everyone. If done with respect for local communities, environments and biodiversity, travel can broaden horizons, reduce barriers and bring people closer together. We aim to promote a more sustainable travel industry, so we can collectively preserve a world worth experiencing.
Over 80% of our partners told us they want to see travel become more sustainable. The Travel Sustainable programme is a first step in this journey. We heard from many partners that the only way forward with regards to sustainability was to earn a third-party sustainability certification. Yet many also told us they had already begun implementing some sustainability efforts at their properties, but were reluctant to share these with their guests for fear they would be considered greenwashing.
Working with experts in the field, Sustainalize, we began the development of the Travel Sustainable programme by identifying which sustainability initiatives were most applicable to our accommodation partners and which were the most impactful. The resulting methodology was simplified into a questionnaire in our partner extranet. To ensure the methodology was sound and credible, we had the Independent Advisory Group of travel non-profit Travalyst validate the programme. Turning this impact methodology into a filter and recognition programme on the Booking.com platform was the next step in the process. an algorithm will determine if your property will receive a badge. Or, if your property is certified by one of the 30+ third-party sustainability certifications that we recognise, that property will also get a badge, because those properties will always reach the required threshold. Thresholds are set at a continental level, but each practise is weighted by country, meaning there is no minimum number a partner must select in order to reach a threshold, it depends on many different factors, such as purchasing power of that region, the availability of that attribute to the property and what government policies are already in place. We plan to further segment and refine the programme in the coming months to make sure as many of our partners as possible can engage with it to maximise the availability of more sustainable options for guests. 10

Alongside the customer-facing filter and sustainability information displayed on the Booking.com products, we also wanted to support accommodation providers in their sustainability journeys. We worked with sustainability experts to produce a free-to-use sustainability handbook, available to all on our partner hub, that offers practical advice on implementing impactful sustainability initiatives at properties. At Booking.com, we don't believe in asking our partners to do anything we are not doing ourselves. In March 2022, we launched a Climate Action Plan, which sets out our approach to decarbonising our operations, and the wider industry, with the goal of achieving net zero company emissions by 2040. If you would like to be recognised for your sustainability efforts, log in to the Booking.com extranet and click the sustainability tab. Alternatively, if you're just beginning your sustainability journey, checkout our sustainability handbook.
