Welcome: We are delighted that you have chosen International House as your home while in Philadelphia. It is our hope that you will find International House Philadelphia (IHP) to be not only warm and welcoming, but also culturally stimulating. Everything about IHP, from the design of our building to the programs we offer, helps to promote interaction that enables residents to develop valuable cross-cultural communication skills and build lifelong friendships that will enrich their personal and professional lives for years to come. Our diverse international environment is not the only reason residents enjoy living at International House. Our smoke-free building is conveniently located in the heart of University City and includes amenities like 24-hour security, a computer center and study room, wireless Internet access in public areas, and an on-site parking facility. Our residents enjoy coffee hours, trips, films, parties, and other activities designed by our staff to help them settle into life while in the United States. We also encourage our resident-members to play an active role in IHP by attending and helping to plan and implement our residential and cultural programs. Take full advantage of living in a house that, in many ways, represents the world. Get involved and learn about yourself and others. This opportunity doesn’t come often. If you lose your key card, contact Security or the Admissions Office. Please carry your keycard with you at all times. You may go in and out of the building as you please. Your room keycard will open the front entrance door. The front entrance door reopens at 7:30am.

Heating and Air Conditioning

All rooms and apartments have their own heating and air conditioning controls located inside the vents under the window. If there is no heat/air coming out of the unit, make sure it is turned on. If it still does not work, please file a maintenance request at the Front Desk. Depending on the weather, heating is generally available between October 15 and April 15; air conditioning is available between May 15 and September 15.

Lights and Electricity

Before using any appliance from your country, check to see if a converter is required. Do not overload any outlet with too many items. In single rooms, the electricity in the top half of the electric outlet is controlled by the light switch near the door. Lamps may be turned on individually once the light switch is turned on. Light bulbs will be supplied when you arrive. If a bulb burns out during your stay, it is your responsibility to replace it. The only exception to this is fluorescent lights, which will be replaced if reported to the Front Desk.

11

In YOUR ROOM OR SUITE

Wireless Network

At International House Philadelphia we offer Wi-Fi internet access (Ruckus Guest) for our residentmembers and guests. Many of the locations in the building have wireless access, such as the public areas like lobbies, common areas on the floors, apartments, inside the suite common areas, meeting rooms, in the vending area, students café, lounge, and lounge areas in the building, etc. Please note the Wi-Fi connection is limited inside rooms. Wi-Fi can be accessed in the common areas inside your suite and the lounge areas outside your suite. To use Wi-Fi you must activate your account. Please stop by the computer lab from 7pm to 10pm Monday through Sunday to have a computer staff member activate your account.

Problems With The Wireless

If you are experiencing a problem with the Wi-Fi internet access, there are two ways to request help: •

If you have any issues with your connection or are unable to connect to our wireless, you must stop by the Front Desk and fill out a Computer Maintenance Request Form. (Your request will be responded to during business hours, Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm).

If you are aware that other residents are also experiencing a problem with the wireless network at the same time as you, please ask those residents to also contact the Front Desk so that we know if the problem is more widespread.

Please note that the following is prohibited

The unauthorized use, installation of, or tampering with technical services in the house which includes wireless internet, computer lab computers, phone lines, DSL internet ports, telephones, and/or other technical services deemed relevant to the function of the house. (This is also noted on the backside of your contract in point “e”).

Cleaning, Maintenance, and Repairs

The Facilities staff cleans suite bathrooms, halls, suite and House lounges, and kitchen surfaces five days per week. Suite residents are responsible for cleaning their individual rooms and for cleaning up their food and dirty dishes in their kitchens.

12

In YOUR ROOM OR SUITE

Private room/apartment residents are responsible for cleaning their own living areas. Maintenance and repair problems may be reported 24 hours a day to the Front Desk, by dialing “0” or by filling out a maintenance request form at the front desk. Pest Control is done on a rotating schedule weekly in your room and suite. Exterminators are always accompanied by a security guard. If you have specific pest concerns you can fill out a maintenance request at the Front Desk. Kitchen cabinets must be emptied in preparation. Additional pest control may be requested if necessary by filling out a maintenance request at the front desk.

Personal Property Damages

Occupants agree to be responsible for and relieve IHP of direct or indirect liability (including counsel fees and costs) for injury to the person or destruction of, damage to, or theft of personal property of Occupants or their guests, and to indemnify and hold the House harmless for and against such injury, damages, or loss, whether arising in the living quarters or any other part of the House premises, unless such injury or loss is caused by the gross negligence or willful misconduct of the House, its agents, or employees. We encourage all residents to apply for renters’ insurance during your stay. Renters’ insurance can be found on the internet.

Trash Removal

Do not leave food, garbage, old newspapers, paper grocery bags, empty boxes, etc. around, as they attract bugs. Trash items left out will be thrown away by staff. In suites, Housekeeping staff remove trash from the bathrooms and kitchens. Suite residents should empty their trash into the large bin located within their suites, either in the kitchen or common area. In private rooms, residents should empty trash into the large trash bins within the House lounge. In apartments, residents should deposit their trash in plastic garbage bags into the trash cans in the basement by the west side elevators.

13

In YOUR ROOM OR SUITE

Recycling and Conservation

International House encourages its residents to recycle and conserve resources. If you wish to recycle, all glass, plastic, and aluminum should be taken to the basement and placed together in the blue bins near the west elevators. Paper items (cardboard, envelopes, computer paper, notebook paper, magazines) should also be taken to the basement and placed in the blue bin marked “paper” near the west elevators. Please note that if you choose to recycle, it is up to you to take recyclables from your room to the bins in the basement.

Conservation A few simple practices can do a great deal to save energy and preserve limited natural resources. •

Turn off lights, stereos, and appliances when you leave a room.

Use natural light during the day.

Use the heating/air conditioning unit’s controls to regulate heat in your room. Turn off the unit when the window is open and when you leave your room.

During winter months, open blinds during the day to let the sun in and closing blinds at night to conserve heat.

Turn off water while you shave or brush your teeth.

Take shorter showers and turn water on and off as needed when you soap up and rinse. Try to limit water usage.

Report any leaks immediately to the Front Desk by dialing 0 on your house or room phone.

International Houses World Wide

International Houses Worldwide is an affiliation of International Houses from across the continents, united by one mission: To provide students of different nationalities and diverse cultures with the opportunity to live and learn together in a community of mutual respect, understanding, and international friendship. The International Houses spread across the world are separate, independent, non-profit making institutions united by one mission. All International Houses provide long and short-term accommodations offering great value, a fun and friendly atmosphere, and a safe environment. All International Houses give young people the opportunity to live and learn in a multicultural environment. An ambiance that nurtures understanding, dialogue, and friendship enables cultural gaps to be bridged. At every International House worldwide, people with vastly divergent beliefs learn to accept differences in thought and tradition. Here they acquire intercultural skills that enhance their capacity as future leaders in the global community. The International House movement was founded in the early 1900’s due to the plight of international students, be that inadequate housing or simply loneliness. In Philadelphia, Dr. Waldo Stevenson (a missionary), began entertaining foreign students in his modest apartment and by 1910, the work has expanded so much that he took the case to the Christian Association; the project grew further and International House Philadelphia was born. Harry Edmonds decided to investigate the situation of foreign students having bumped into a Chinese student in New York City and with the funding and support of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., the first purpose built International House opened in New York in 1924.

Mission Statement International House Philadelphia has a critical three-fold mission: to maintain a diverse and welcoming community for scholars from around the world, while introducing them to the American experience; to broaden the horizons of its residents and the Greater Philadelphia community through high quality international arts and humanities programs; and to encourage understanding, respect, and cooperation among the people of all nations.
