Eachteacherhadtheirownsystem,whichwasoutlinedintheclass syllabus.However,overthepandemic’sworstyears,thegrading systematIHSchangeddramatically.Accordingtoanewschool widepolicy,studentscouldreceivenolowerthan55percentonan assignment,regardlessofwhetherornottheyhadturneditin.As ofthisyear,thatminimumhasbeenloweredto45percentfor uncompleted work Although if an assignment is turned in, teachersarestillnotallowedtogivethestudentanylowerthana 55percent,nomatterthequalityofwork

ICSD’s focus should be on cultivating a safe and equitable environmentwherestudentscanlearn,regardlessofextraneous factors.Insteadofpursuingpoliciesliketheminimumgradeplan thathavenotangiblepositiveeffectonstudents’actuallearning, thedistrictshouldfocusinsteadonpoliciesthatimpactstudentsin theclassroom suchasmoreconsistentandlessharshlatepolicies andgradingsystemsthatfocusonmasteryratherthanperformance on examinations The Tattler Editorial Board recognizes that improvingthesituationsmakingitdifficultforstudentstolearnis somethingICSDmustcontinuallystrivetoachieve,andthatitisa complexandmultifacetedproblem.However,itisclearthatthe current grading system is failing students, regardless of the implementationoftheminimumgradespolicy.
