IIDA Indiana - 2015 Chapter Advocacy & GRA Activities

Page 1

#iidaindianagra The IIDA Indiana Chapter approaches advocacy as a collaborative effort between IIDA, the Interior Design Coalition of Indiana, and the local ASID Chapter. This collaborative effort is an integral part in the continued advancement for Interior Design in the State of Indiana. Interior design legislation helps establish and maintain professional standards that protect the wellbeing of the general public. Our ultimate goal is to keep design professionals and the general public informed on the importance of the Interior Design profession and legislation that supports the profession. 2014 Budget: $2500 2015 Budget: $2000

The IIDA Indiana Chapter was historically operating without the direction of Chapter Policy and Procedures and Chapter ByLaws. In 2014, the Chapter President, President-Elect, and Past President work on drafting the first ever “live” document for the IIDA Indiana Chapter. As a result, these governing documents have provided clarity and affirm direction for the Chapter Board and City Centers, since the Board approved the implementation last year. The IIDA Indiana Chapter is constantly editing and adapting the draft of these guidelines to continue to the development and processes set forth by this Board of Directors.

#iidaindianaadvocacy campus outreach staying connected to your profession importance of NCIDQ understanding legislative history and direction for the future

Campus Center outreach is on the forefront! With IIDA Indiana shifting the focus to the advocacy and growth of the future design profession, the City Center Directors are working closely with Luke Baskett, VP of Student Affairs to educate and advocate the importance of interior design and the value of IIDA. Since this focus has shifted to our Campuses, we have actively engaged a new Campus Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. We also have active Campus Centers engaged at Indiana State University and Purdue University.

“We are being forced to think about advocacy in our profession. IIDA Indiana has engaged in much more outreach this past year. Partnership with the coalition continues to strengthen, participation and representation at the Statehouse continue to advocate and create awareness for us. All the while, we are working [collectively] with interdisciplinary design fields on educating the importance and value of interior design. - Erin Jennings, Associate IIDA, Associate AIA, Indiana Chapter President

Not only has the IIDA Indiana Chapter doubled the amount of program offerings, this was the first year that the Chapter focuses on an Advocacy Series as part of the curriculum. Advocacy has made a significant impact on the overall programs calendar in 2014. Take a look at the GRA-specific offerings broken out (and listed above). These events were included into the overall programs calendar diversifying the offerings to the local design community. The Indiana Chapter offered 27 programs in 2014, including NCIDQ Study Sessions, building design tours, educational non-CEU events, legislative and networking opportunities, and the two annual large events (Avant Garb Fashion Show and World’s Fair). Also, in 2014, 24 CEU (IDCEC-approved) programs were offered between the two City Centers.

In the past couple of years, IIDA Indiana has made huge and generous strides in becoming better involved in the community around us. As the Fort Wayne and Indianapolis City Center continue to develop and thrive, it is not without the focus of the community development that we can impact. We have had the ability in the past to give back to the local foundations that so much desire our support. Our designers, statewide, are so excited and honored to have the opportunity to engage and support these organizations.

This past year, both City Centers created an event called “Designer Give Back: At the Ballpark.” Both City Centers hosted a Designers’ Night Out at the local minor league baseball fields and facilitated a backpack drive for the kids at The Villages. It was an extremely well-attended event, and we are so excited to do it again this year! Samantha’s House has been a significant part of IIDA Indiana. Samantha’s House continues to, year after year, ask for designer volunteers to help create the beautiful spaces for one family in the community. We continue to be honored to be involved in such a personal and impactful process. Toys for Tots remains a charity opportunity for IIDA Indiana, as we enjoy raising awareness and collecting items around the holidays at our City Center Holiday Parties. It is an opportune time to be able to give back to the community and also continue to educate the value of IIDA Indiana to others. As a portion of our large summer event – Cirque de Paris – we requested local area design firms to enter into a “French”-themed art competition. Prizes were awarded to the top favorites, but over 30 off these fantastic masterpieces were donated to the folks at Colonial Oaks Health & Rehabilitation Center.

“Thanks to the Indiana Chapter IIDA and the Designer’s Give Back Event, many of our foster children and children in our Network (Prevention) Program are able to begin the school year with new school supplies! The children are so happy to receive the donated backpacks and supplies and are able to begin their new school year with pride and a positive attitude! We are humbled to be a recipient of their generosity!” - Kim Andrew, The Villages Of Indiana Adoption Recruiter

ZeroLandfill Indy started last spring with the help of Wilsonart and Lumbermen’s. A core group of about 10 people assembled to grasp the ins and outs of the ZeroLandfill process, which is a national program in over 20 different cities, often supported by IIDA. After months of planning, the impossible happened, and the event occured as scheduled. A brisk, cold day in November brought artists, teachers and hoarders alike to one room in the Harrison Center for the Arts. We cleared out 5700 pounds of interior design treasure trash, giving the much needed supplies (and smiles) to our patrons. Someone even enthusiastically took the foam that Cambria quartz is packed in. What?! So many commented on what a great idea this was. At one point, a mother and her high school artist daughter were in the building for another reason when they happened upon our event. The mother’s eyes lit up when I told her my profession. Her daughter loved art and didn’t know how to make a career of it. She now had one outlet to consider. An interior designer. ZeroLandfill Indy also participated in Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s Run317 event, hosting an information booth that exposed it to over 900 participants. Our philanthropic arm reached out when we hosted a table at the Boys and Girls Club, through Officeworks & Herman Miller’s: We Care Event. The kids upcycled discontinued tiles into coasters with their photograph on it. It was adorable. Zerolandfill Indy continues to make impactful progress throughout the State of Indiana. While this is not an IIDA Indiana funded event, it is most definitely in collaboration with and supported by the Members of the IIDA Indiana Chapter.

“So what does an IIDA Indiana supported ZeroLandfill look like?”
