National Summits Wednesday, November 30, 2016 National Summit on Senior Living Seniors Living: Strategies for Dynamic and Flexible Approaches to Design 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Chair: Irka Dyczok, Principal of Designfarm Inc.

What is the business of aging and how are we preparing for the future senior? This summit will gather designers, real estate developers, facility managers, public officials and policy experts to discuss a range of thought-provoking ideas. The introductory remarks will frame the summit’s curated list of panelists. The first panel will help define what is successful aging and the range of seniors-oriented populations that we are designing for—whether we are rethinking the private dwelling, an assisted-living environment, or public and commercial buildings. The second panel will dig deep to report on how our industry is preparing to design for the seniors of tomorrow? This session is preceded by a 2016 Keynote presentation “Empathetic Eyes: Design for Universal Delight” delivered by Chris Downey. Panelists include: Candace Chartier, Lee Kirby Leblanc, Joanne Dykeman, Jane Rohde, Lisa Cini, Guela Solow and Megan Strickfadden. This focus on Senior Living at IIDEXCanada 2016 extends to the show floor with exhibitors focussing on senior living and other educational opportunities throughout the conference program.

National Summit on Accessibility Accessible by Design: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Including Everyone’s Experiences 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Chair: Jutta Treviranus, Director of the Inclusive Design Research Centre / Professor in the Faculty of Design, OCAD

This summit will focus on appreciating how diverse stakeholders help shape and improve our built environment. A series of special films, lectures and panel discussions will help define this important discussion on what makes a building accessible. Aging-in-place, Alzheimer’s, incorporating different tactile and sensory experiences, accessibilityrelated policies or even incorporating the process of play are all vital to enhancing the dialogue of what makes our physical world inclusive, resilient to change, and accepting of various stakeholders. The summit’s panels will focus on two essential issues: Inclusive Play and Policy. Panelists include architects, interior designers, industrial designers and graphic designers as well as federal and provincial government and public officials in charge of accessibility legislation. This session is preceded by a 2016 Keynote presentation “Empathetic Eyes: Design for Universal Delight” delivered by Chris Downey.

National Summit on Women in Design Women in Design: Identifying Questions about Leadership and Excellence 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Chair: Susan Black, Principal and Director of Perkins Eastman Black

This summit focuses on a series of important and multi-disciplinary issues facing women practitioners in the design and construction industry. Design schools typically comprise over 50% female enrollment, but women remain a relative minority in many areas of the industry. This summit will include leaders in architecture and interior design, construction, and finance to examine the importance of mentorship, trends, and experiences of women designers in all stages of their careers. Panelists include 2016 Keilhauer Keynote speakers Petra Blaisse and Róisín Heneghan, Elaine Pantel, Betsy Williamson, Chantal Frenette and other Canadian leaders who will comment on the many resources and approaches that women can take to ensure successful and rewarding careers. Attendees can also register for a separate Women’s College Hospital seminar and tour led by Susan Black and Heather J. McPherson that will be held on October 25th and December 1st.

National Summits Thursday, December 1, 2016 National Summit on Passive House The Passive House Approach: An Evolution in Sustainable Living 9:00 am - 12:00 pm The Passive House Standard, developed by the Passive House Institute in Germany, is an approach to design that has matured the construction industry in Canada. Building professionals, developers, manufacturers, and public officials have used the Passive House Standard to deliver high-performance buildings in a competitive marketplace. But what exactly is a Passive House? Chair: Andrew Peel, Principal, Peel Passive House Consulting

This summit will examine this high performance building standard, the only internationally-recognized and sciencebased energy standard in construction. It will delve into the key principles of Passive House design, including airtight building envelopes, passive heating/cooling, ventilation, minimal mechanical systems, certified products, and affordability. This summit is being coordinated by Passive House Canada, the national non-profit professional association advocating standards. Attendees to IIDEXCanada can also visit the Passive House Pavilion on the show floor and attend additional Passive House focused seminars.

National Summit on Wellness Understanding the WELL Building Standards & Case Study of ASID Offices 9:00 am - 12:00 am This summit will look at the WELL Building Standard and the holistic approach to design and the importance of collaboration for healthier built environments. Attendees will also be exposed to some of the significant benchmarking of issues associated with wellness in both the workplace and home environments. This summit will not only explore how design and real estate can impact health, well-being and culture, but it will also work to connect various stakeholders. By taking a holistic look at health and wellness, the sessions in this summit will uncover how elements like design, operations, management and culture building can redefine how we think about value in real estate. This session is preceded by a 2016 Keynote presentation by Paul Scialla. Speakers: Paul Scialla, Founder, International WELL Building Institute Jessica Cooper, Executive Vice-President, Delos Solutions and Director of Sustainability Randy Fiser, Chief Executive Officer, American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)

Best Of... Special Feature The “Totally Tubular!” exhibit design for IIDEXCanada was conceived by the IA Interior Architects team as an exercise in branding and display. Award-winning products from premier global companies will also highlight IIDEXCanada’s winners from the 2016 Innovation Awards. A construct designed primarily to present and display the latest award-winning products from around the world, “Totally Tubular!” is positioned to welcome visitors to the annual IIDEX trade show with a sense of visual impact and discovery. Drawing inspiration from Shigeru Ban’s work and utilizing a common building product, the exhibit presents an innovative use of sonotubes, traditionally used for structural application within foundations and building shells. By adjusting various lengths, the sonotubes create the walls, backdrops, platforms and steps to showcase the “best of design” products.
