What are the key challenges that you have been facing as the CHRO? Our long-term strategy is focused on creating an inclusive culture within Bridgestone India and it is also a key focus area of our transformational journey. Transformation cannot be done in a short period of time so that journey is on for us. Bridgestone has been in India for over 20 years and we have a very strong Japanese lineage. We are trying to preserve the core of the organisation but at the same time looking at how do we transform the organisation so that we remain relevant and competitive in today’s environment.
In the beginning of the year 2020, we were faced with the pandemic and at that time we felt that this is something which is going to go off within a month or two. But unfortunately, that did not happen and the pandemic took priority over everything else because it was going to impact people directly and it was going to impact our business. So, that became an additional challenge for me. The way it was spreading and the way the news was coming, the first priority for us was to safeguard our people. Since we were amidst a nation-wide lockdown, we were also simultaneously trying to figure out how to streamline operations once the lockdown is lifted. The main challenge was how do we support our people, how do we safeguard them, how do we create systems and processes wherein they have the medical support available, how do we create an organisation which is engaged and where there is free flow of information so that if any teammate across India needed any help, we should be able to reach out to them. We struggled quite a bit at that point, and till today that remains a challenge. While the number of Covid-19 infections is going down and the business has come back, as we have started producing at both our locations, still a new fear is lurking in our heads, which is the second wave. I hear that the second wave, according to the experience in other countries, could be worse than the first wave. So, we have again started working, we have gone back to the drawing board, looking at it, what do we need to change? How do we respond to it? So, the challenge was to handle the pandemic, to keep our people safe, to make sure that we bring our business back post the lockdown because we had no people. People had gone back since the plants were closed for almost two months. And so, bringing them back, and restarting the plants, was a challenge. People had gone back since the plants were closed for almost two months. And so, bringing them back, and restarting the plants, was a challenge. The year 2020 was very much a year of pandemic. While we are still focused on our long-term agenda, but the pandemic took most of our time, energy and focus in 2020‌
