lITA accounts for 60% of maize varieties in west, central Africa - DC A
BOUT 60 per cent of maize grown in west and centra l Africa currently are from varieties introduced by -the International Institute ofTropical Agriculture (!ITA). _ The institute's directorgeneral, Dr Peter Hartmann, disclosed this in a press statement made available to the News Agency of Ni- gena (NAN) by the !ITA head office in lbadan_ While pointing out that the institute had remained a very stable research outfit, the statement quoted the director-general as expl-essing joy at recent developments. This included the latest assessment, which showed that about 70 per cent of the impact by the Consultative
Group on international Agricultural Research (CGMR) came from research outputs by the!ITA. _ NAN reported that !ITA was a member of CGIAR in Africa_ According to '

the staff. It said the institute's present management did not re-invent the wheel but
only built upon what the staff had built. On the future of !ITA, the statement said the institute was working towards diversifying-its support base, adding that the CClAR was one of such bases.
