TSinghua UniverSity, which celebrated its centennial anniversary on Sunday, wit· nessed ligh tin~ of the name by five stu· dents from Chma, Nigeria, Russia. Australia and Brazil, representing five con· tineots, using a concave reflective mirror. The torch relay will kick off on May 4 in Peking University with a virtual relay at the same time on Tencent. Th.e southern Chinese City of Shenzhen will host the 26th Summer Universiade from August 12 to 23. Shenzhen, a Chinese boomtown that shares border ~ith Hong Kong, won't repeat the Olyihpic or Asian Games scale of torch relay, as it aims to cut costs and go 'green'. Shenzhen University on May 15 and will be relayed five days later to universities clustered in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province that encompasses Shenzhen. A two·day final relay will be run in the host city before the games officially opens on August U, with the first day relay featuring mostly local residents and the second day international partiCipants. Following Beijing Olympics in 2008 , Shanghai Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games in 20\0. Shenzhen, once a small fishing village, is eager to cement its status as an international and modern metropolis by hosti ng a world·sporting gala. Sta rt Here, Make a Difference was unveiled as the games' slogan ea rlier this month when Universiade Centre, which houses several venues and the Athletes' Village, were delivered to the organising committee.
"Shen zhen Games will show the city's innovation and wisdom. It will be a brilliant Universiade." said Wang Rong, Vice President organising committee. With a 'green' idea in mind, Shenzhen will not use pyrotechnics to open the games or invite star artists to the opening ceremony. The games' logistics depa rtments are staffed with over 40 members as the city's government bureaus take bigger roles in traffic, food, tourism and medical assistance during the games. "Shenzhen will reach a new level of develop· ment after the world university games," said Wang. He added: "The games would leave a lasting legacy and bring huge benefits to the local people." The World University Games is expected to attract 12,000 to 13,000 participants from over 180 countries and regions across the globe.
