TN line with global best prac!tices, stakeh o lders in the agricultural sector have called on the government to establish a trust fu nd fo r the sustai nable fu nding of agricultural research, developme nt and extensio n activities. They m entioned that li ke what is obtai ned in other

countries, users of resea rch find ing should be made to fund research in agricu lture, add ing that research fund allocation shoul d be differentiated from the capital a nd recurrent expenditures in all agricultura l resea rch institutes.

This was contained in a communique prese nted at the end of a Sym posium tagged: "Making Agricultura l research work for the users, the stakeholders also dema nded that budgeting by the d ifferent levels of government in the agricultu ral sector should reflect cost effectiveness and poverty reduction potentials oT d ifferent agricultural commodities. President of the Nigerian Agri cultural Policy Resea rch Netwo rk (NAPRNet), Prof. Eri c Eboh, in his keynote add ress, canvassed for tra nsformation of agricultural research outputs into useful fo rm, addi ng that this wou ld help li nk agricu ltura l resea rch to policy makers. Stressing the need for more proactive research resu lts ven¡ dor, Eboh stated that the proposed natio nal agricultu ra l research results vendor would con nect systematically with prod ucers and users of research.

He lauded the Federal Ministry of Agric ultu re, Depa rtm ent of Fisheries fo r bri nging the technologys prototype to reali ty, w hUe urging commercial fish fa rmers to leverage 0 11 t he product and aVai lability water resources in Nigeria to boost fish prod uction in the nation, The Managi ng Director and Chief Executive, Talon Nigeria Limited, Mr. Lanre Talabi, said

the country spends about US $i billio n yearly on importation of fis h which translates to about N157 billion, He explai ned that the country can earn fo reig n exchange fro m fis h exportation if tile populace would em brace the

busmess.

He said that the country has sufficient water resources well enough for the project, adding that the technology has been tested at vario us water locatio ns in the coun try by m e Federal Ministry of Water

Resources. The Managi ngDirector ofVita Pur Nigeria Limited, Mr, Oluwo le Adisa, said that with the technology there would be no need to im port fish in the next three years if everybody em braces it a nd util ise the water resources across the country.
