N315billion annually, according to the Minister of Agricultu re and Water Recourses, Dr. Akin Adesina. An online statement by the International Institute for Tropical .Agriculture (IlTAI, Jbadao , on Friday credited Adesina as saying that Nigeria spent N6J5billion on wheat importation annually. The minister said thai half of the amount spent on wheat importation could be saved and diverted 10 other important areas of the economy if the bakers adopted 50 per cent cassava flour inclusion in wheat flour. ''The amount spent on the importation of wheal is unacceptable. Apart from the country saving N315 billion, it will

also create jobs and encourage fanner.; to produce more cassava flou r," he said. The statement pointed out that in 2002, Nigeria adopted a policy that compelled flou r millers to add 10 per cent of cassava flour into wheat flour. It said the policy, hacked by improved va rieties from lIT}\, raised cassava production by 10 ·million tonnes between 2002 and 200S·and made the country the largest p roduce r of cassava. uUnder th e new transformation agenda, Nigeria plans to double its cassava production from the current 37 million tonnes . The government is focusing on value addition to make production demand driven and also improve yield, among others," it said.

Deregulation of power sector will improve electricity - Prof ror. Frank Okafor, Power and P Control Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University of Lagos, said on Thursday that deregulation in the power sector would assist in improving electricity supply in the country. Okafor said this in Lagos while delivering an inaugural lecture titled: Power System Control a n d Automation; !lIe Cliallenge 01 Reliable Power Su pply. He noted lhal deregulating power system required greater considerations than were proposed for other netw·orks in developed economies. The university lecturer pointed out that the oountry's available installed electricity generating capacity was a little more than 4000 mw, adding that with the country's population at more than 140 million. translated to about 27watts per person. wnus is not enough for the individual to light a lamp, how much more of -

taking care ofind\lstrie~ that a modem urban centre should do whether as an individual or collectively. H we consider that only the Nigerian urban population alone estimated at 50 million, induding Niger Republic, which is also connected to Nigeria's grid, have access to all of the 4000 mw capacity, it would be about 80 watls per person, which is beller but not much," he said . Okafar said that for the country to join the league of world leading countries there was an urgent need to raise the electricity generating and distributing capacity to 500 walls mu ltiplied by 50 million, which amounted to 25,000 mw. H e said that until recenUy, the Nigerian power sys tem was solely owned by the government, adding that recently, most major projects in tfle country had been designed to· have their own power supply separated trom the national grid.
