A stroll through the old city centre and its gothic splendour will take your breath away. Sint Pieters Church, the Town Hall, the Academic Library and the béguinages: each one a must-see attraction. Town Hall

This landmark building is world famous for its stunning ornate Gothic architecture. Built between 1439 and 1445 and featuring 149 statues, you’ll find the Town Hall right on the Grote Markt. Inside, there’s a fascinating array of artwork, including sculptures by Constantin Meunier and Jef Lambeaux.

Sint Pieters Church When you come out of the Town Hall, you’ll spot Sint Pieters Church right in front of you on the Grote Markt. Built in Brabantine Gothic style, Sint Pieters Church dates back from 1497 and constitutes the centre of Leuven. The church, with its cruciform floor plan, survived both world wars. In the chancel and ambulatory you’ll come across a collection of world-renowned sculptures and paintings. Most famous are ‘The Last Supper’ (1464-1468) and ‘The Martyrdom of St Erasmus’ (1465) by Dirk Bouts. Be sure to check out an interesting curio up on the roof of the church; the gold whistle blower up there rings the bells on the hour!

“The little man, pouring beer onto his head.” Fonske In Leuven, everybody knows Fons Sapientiae or ‘Fonske’, pouring a glass of beer onto his head while studying. The fountain of wisdom was designed by Jef Claerhout in 1975 as a gift to the city celebrate the 550th birthday of the University of Leuven. From time to time you’ll find Fonske dressed up in various outlandish costumes!

Hogeschoolplein Rector De Somerplein Recently redesigned and rebuilt, the former Fochplein has changed its name to ‘De Somerplein’. This square is the home of ‘Fonske’. and hosts a ultrahandy bicycle parking. The modern ambience here provides both a contrast and a complement to the old city.

This splendid verdant square is surrounded by many of Leuven’s hip and trendy restaurants. One of the more unusual restaurants on the square is De Werf. Drop in for sandwiches in a lunch box or some fresh coffee in a thermos flask. During the academic year, throngs of students join workers here and everyone off-loads their cares over great food and drinks. So be sure to drop by, unload the weight from your legs and fuel yourself for the day.
Catering for more than 26 000 passengers daily, the Central Station recently underwent extensive renovation and now boasts its own mini village. Stroll through the tunnel underneath the tracks and you’ll discover a host of shops and hotels at the rear of the station.
Martelarenplein Leuven station, a harmonious combination of the 1875 eclectic design and the recent modern extension, faces out onto the Martelarenplein. This open square plays host to an array of restaurants, bars and terraces. All are we placed to welcome newcomers and locals alike. The Grand Béguine is located further south, at the other side of the city. It is also known as ‘Béguinage Ten Hove’. Perfectly restored, this quaint historical area covers some 3 acres making it the largest existing béguinage in Flanders. Just like at the St Geertrui Abbey, the Dijle-river flows quietly alongside the little cobblestone streets and beneath the historic bridges adding further charm and romance to the area which is now used as a campus, housing lucky students and academics from the University of Leuven.

Home to Catholic lay sisters of yore, whose ranks were swelled by the decimation of men at war, you’ll find the Little Béguinage in the environs of St Geertrui’s Abbey. This charming historic quarter area is full of narrow alleys lined with little white beguine houses. Plunge into the riverside This once industrial-zone is now the up and coming place to be. Old warehouses now play host to happening artists with their studios and galleries and cultural organizations. This goes hand in hand with hip clubs and cafes as well as great restaurants making good use of the riverside views.

Keep calm and study on The Ladeuze plein Dominated by the landmark University Library, the Ladeuzeplein is home to a number of landmark Leuven events; the annual September fair, the famous Christmas market in December, the weekly market on Friday morning, ... Presiding over all these markets is a giant bug, firmly stuck on 23 metre needle. Situated right in front of the University Library. It is designed by famous Belgian artist, Jan Fabre. It’s food to fall in love with Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Indian, French, Japanese; in Leuven you can virtually explore the world on a plate. Perhaps the place to take off on this culinary voyage is the Muntstraat whether it’s lunch, an afternoon snack or an evening meal. But this is not the only place to enjoy local or global cuisine, carnivore or vegetarian. The Grote Markt and the Oude Markt are dotted with high quality cozy restaurants. The doors are locked. The hour not yet ten. A chilled lazy Saturday morning. Strange though... those crowds. They have been growing for the past twenty minutes. All cool and pleasant. Hanging outside the doors of De Walvis. Waiting for the clock to hit ten. TEN! Then oceans of fish are ready for the catching. From this legendary shop. Fish to be teased in and adorned. Bargains dangled like flies to salmon. And hollers of excitement, conversation and advice at volumes not heard since the first sightings of Moby Dick himself (or so they say). This Mechelsestraat fishmonger has, since 1987, become one of Leuven’s iconic landmarks. The sheer beauty of the city’s only indoor fish-market is rivalled only by the fresh works of culinary wonder prepared there for your delight on a daily basis. Oysters, fresh lobsters, Swedish caviar, the very finest of salmon and shrimp. And whether it is from the deep cold North Sea to mild waters of the French Med, De Walvis specialises in the provision of undersea riches.

Kwinten De Paepe Kwinten is only 34 years old but he has already cooked up a storm and built a reputation for himself as one of Leuven’s leading chefs. He is the head chef in his own restaurant ‘Trente’ and is known for its local and seasonal cuisine. In 2011, Kwinten even won the title of ‘Best young chef in Flanders’ by Gault&Millau. We had a little chat with him. Kwinten, thanks for finding some time to get out of the kitchen and answer some of our questions! We all know you in Leuven, like Jeroen Meus you are one of the best known chefs of our city. How does it feel to be the culinary face of Leuven? I’m happy that from time to time I get to represent the city I live in. There are many fine restaurants in Leuven, I’m proud of this city.

Trente, your restaurant, is a really great place to be. How long have people been able to taste your culinary excellence on the Muntstraat in Leuven? Trente has opened its doors around Valentine’s Day 2006, so we have been keeping discerning diners happy now for 8 years.

There are so many things that make the Muntstraat unique.
Which cuisine do you offer? Trente offers a gastronomic menu. By ‘gastronomic’ I mean that we redefine everyday dishes by adding an elegant touch. We try to take everyday dishes to a higher level by doing something different with the ingredients and being original. As you seem to be in the kitchen so often, do you ever find the time to dine out yourself? Oh! Of course! I actually eat in restaurants everyday. I guess I only eat at home once or twice a year. Most of the time I eat in Trente, that’s kind of obvious because I’m in the kitchen all day and night. But I’d sooner not eat my own food, not because I don’t like my own dishes, but because I like to be surprised by other cooks! The Muntstraat may be a small street, but it has this unique atmosphere. What do you think makes it so unique? There are so many things that make the Muntstraat unique. They say you’ll find the longest bar in Europe at the Oude Markt but I’m convinced that the Muntstraat has the longest ‘terrace’, especially during summer. The street is filled with hundreds of little tables and you can just walk ‘through’ the restaurants and enjoy so many
different aromas and flavors. It is the latter which makes the Muntstraat even more unique. Just look around... there’s New Mexico on my right, serving delicious fiery Mexican food, there’s Koutoubiya on my left with its fine Moroccan fare. In front of me there’s Sakura slicing up the best of the Japanese cuisine and across the road there’s PepeNero dishing out a little Italian passion on a plate. And... what I like the most about this street is the fact that we’re all good friends. We don’t know the word ‘competition’, we are all cooperating. A few times a year we all get together in the pub to have a drink, a talk and a laugh. That’s hard to find these days! So the world is represented in this little street I guess! Which ethnic cuisine appeals most to you? I don’t prefer one kitchen above the other actually. It all depends on how I feel on the day. One day I yearn for local Belgian food, like you can find in Kokoon for example. Another day I might yearn for some good Japanese food. It really depends on my mood! The lovely thing is, whatever I would desire to eat, I can find it here on the Muntstraat.

So you’re a fan of Japanese? Sushi is the food trend of the moment. Are you into it? Definitely! I’m a sushi fan, but only when it’s is 100% fresh! I really appreciate good sushi, with properly cooked rice -and that’s harder to find than it seems-. I love classic sushi such as maki salmon or fresh tuna handrolls, but I also like some exotic fare such as fish egg sushi or some of the vegetarian pieces. Here, in the Muntstraat, they definitely know how to make good sushi. Wabi Sabi, Sakura, Samourai and You Sushi are specialized in it, along other delicious Japanese dishes. Oh dear, I’m starting to get hungry already!
Apart from Japanese and Italian, The Muntstraat also allows you to feast on other ethnic cuisine. Do you occasionally go for something completely different like Moroccan or Mexican? Koutoubiya specializes in tagines, I love a slow-cooked tagine. At New Mexico they serve the best burritos in town and at Elya you can find a great mix of Med cuisine. I just love all food. In Trente, I sometimes try to do something with these ethnic flavors. We don’t serve the real tagines or burritos, but we take some elements from it and mix them with our own ideas.

And what about the Belgian cuisine? Is our local cuisine represented in this charming little street? How could it not be? For real Belgian fries you have to go to Fonske, it does not get more Belgian. But there’s also Mykene, Troubadour and De Kansel. They all serve some good classic Belgian dishes. Tr3s and Kokoon are serving Belgian cuisine too, but they do it with a slight French touch. My two favourite Belgian dishes are the classic vol-au-vent and some freshly made clams. Clams with a fine tomato sauce, mustard and a splash of Belgian beer. This is a delicious cooking tip for the readers!
You can also experience the best of ‘La bella Italia’ on the Muntstraat. Do pizzas, hot out of the oven, or Mediterranean pastas tantalize your taste buds? Yes, of course. I’m a huge fan of the Pizza PepeNero, it’s totally different to the classic tomato-topped pizza, it is in fact a white pizza! As I told you, I like to be surprised! But I also love a good pasta à la mama or any of the Italian dishes from Casa Mia, Quo Vadis, Iliria, Pronto or Ascoli and... Italians have good meat and meat sauces, I’m a meat lover.

There are some new arivals in the Muntstraat, can you fill us in? Sure! First of all there’s Burger Folie, that’s a meat lovers magnet. They serve the best burgers combined with homemade sauces! Second, there’s a new gastronomic restaurant right across the street, called EssenCiel. I’m sure they serve some innovative dishes and give the Muntstraat cuisine something to be proud of. Well, that’s exciting! The Muntstraat is more than just dining, what else can you do here? Well, you can have a good party! For the young, MusiCafé
and Barcode are the places to be. You’ll find the older crew gathering in the Libertad to enjoy good and regularly live music. I also go to the hairdressers on the Muntstraat, Pure and Academy-Coiffure are tophairdressers. Then around the corner there’s Loco, the student organization. The Muntstraat wouldn’t be complete without students. You certainly make the Muntstraat sound like the place to be for a taste explosion of global cuisine! In 1150 the first walls went up around Leuven and provided a secure, central space for the Oude Markt to spring into life. Soon it became a hub of economic activity - with the open market three times a week as the focal point. Businesses also sprung up on all sides of the square. Beauty lies in the hand of the beerholder
By 1537 the brewery was already a local landmark and symbol of Leuven. Employing hundreds of people and served cool beer to thirsty drinkers in countless cafes. In 1717 Sebastian Artois became the master brewer at Den Hoorn and gave his name to the brewery. In 1926 Stella Artois was launched as a seasonal beer for the Christmas market. On that day, Stella Artois finally came into being. Unexpectedly, it was so well received that this Cristmas gift has been a feature of good bars globally ever since. And that’s how Stella Artois became the star of Leuven.

Pick up a bottle of Stella Artois anywhere in the world and you’ll see proof of the beer’s great taste. It dates back quite some time. In fact Stella was first brewed in 1366. You don’t get to hang around that long unless you’ve got something good going. But one wonders whether anyone back then at Den Hoorn brewery sensed that the beer would become a global icon over the centuries and would put Leuven on the map.

Perhaps it is swimming with dolphins, cliff diving, bungee jumping or tackling Everest. But then there are the slightly less extreme ones. The eye-catching M-Museum in the centre of the city was designed by the Belgian architect, Stephane Beel. The museum opened its doors in 2009 in a ceremony presided over by Princess Mathilde (Belgium) and Princess Maxima (Netherlands). It quickly became a bustling vital museum with a permanent collection of 46 000 pieces. There are many visiting and temporary exhibitions which lure artists and works from all over the world. Here the classical sits comfortably with the post-modern.
You can’t miss STUK on the Naamsestraat. This happening cultural centre stages performance art, concerts, cinema and the less obvious Artefact Festival. From October to April, STUKcafé is the place to be at Saturday night for some good clubbing. Or check out the jazz on a Sunday evening. There’s always something to do at STUK!

During the 1914-1918 war, the University Library of Leuven was destroyed. Burned books and mounds of debris were all that remained. With American aid the library was rebuilt and restored in 1921. Take a look underneath the arches and you will see the names of all those who kindly donated. Today this building contains more than 3 million academic books and the main hall is filled with students every day, especially during exams. A place of quiet study and peace.

Library Tweebronnen Leuven has a dozen libraries. Library Tweebronnen is the main city library which is open to public all year round. Designed by the well known Belgian architect Van de Velde, it was was built during the years 1936 -1942 and was updated and extended with a modern glass building in 2000.

Shop o’clock! You wanna shop ‘till you drop? There are two main streets for shopaholics in Leuven: the Bondgenotenlaan and the Diestsestraat. In the unlikely event you don’t find what you need in either of these two shopping havens, then one of the city’s many fine boutiques might help you out. The Parijsstraat, the Mechelsestraat and the Vismarkt are the places to go if you’re looking for a smaller, more intimate shopping experience.
