SONG FOR THE LOST Oats, eggs, stain remover, Flintstone chewables, turtle food, macaroni, so my BlackBerry tells me. Rows of vitamins won’t betray the cartoon variety that the kids eat. This is the routine. Get the cranium scraped for eight and half with the time sheets and the weak quips and then the store to glare blankly at the shelves. How did I get here? David Byrne said it. A seventh year in land of the sheikh and my thirties have evaporated. Sandstorms and traffic jams and flecks of black gold on the paintwork grind me like a lens, magnifying the summer to a white hot point on the chest that smokes with a resigned whine for the turgid Umfolozi and even a fleeting sense of home. How do I work this? Who knows the path that life will take? Retrospect is like a metronome, a stone skipped on a pond. I took the arch from Oliver Tambo eyes closed to the turbulence of economy class, earphones in and mind closed to the ripples my decision would create in a young life left behind. And you may ask yourself ‘My God, what have I done?’. An eternity ago 2am in Durban’s dark heart I cut the sleeves off a denim shirt with a bottle neck and swore to the roar of Zack de la Rocha that the cubicle would never have me. This year’s work was ranked ‘generally satisfactory’. Same as it ever was.

Youth had a soundtrack a beat gnashing riffs that spat at the injustice and absurdity, but the circle spirals in and now the needle hisses static. The skyscrapers take you green. The smiles and crisp suits conspire to hide the quiet violence that gives the chrome and glass its life. Jungle scene screen savers and powerpoint platitudes passed through the mail. We all plan our escape from purgatory. Into the blue again. Into silent water. Blake Pickering Stranded in Qatar
