Executive

SUMMARY Successfully rewilding Earth begins by inspiring people around the world to support and participate in rewilding projects in their region. The Global Rewilding Alliance launched the first annual World Rewilding Day on March 20, 2021 (the equinox) to expand enthusiasm for actions that help stabilize the climate emergency and simultaneously protect and restore the web of life. We call these sets of actions rewilding. And through the collective efforts of our network on World Rewilding Day, we saw an exponential increase in the global rewilding audience. World Rewilding Day has proven to be an extraordinary opportunity to engage the media and the broader environmental movement around the rewilding vision.

How Many People Reach

400 MILLION In the days before and after World Rewilding Day our network partners reached nearly 400 million people world-wide with the rewilding message. This saw rewilding news and social media chatter accelerate from numbers in the single digits to millions literally overnight.

How Many Organizations Participated

+120 NGOs

In the weeks preceding World Rewilding Day, the Global Rewilding secretariat coordinated with our network of over 120 NGO rewilding practitioners to plan for World Rewilding Day. When the day finally arrived, dozens of these NGOs utilized the World Rewilding Day assets and shared them over social media and with traditional media. Our ability to reach an audience of 400 million people was the direct result of high levels of participation among our network members.

Who Shared Messages

GRETA THUNBERG & LEONARDO DICAPRIO In addition to the messages shared by the Global Rewilding Network and the media they helped cultivate, including the Guardian and the China Global TV network, we also saw the participation of several high profile celebrities who are helping rewilding breakout of the traditional conservation mold and into new audience segments.

What Materials Were Shared A video, media kit, landing page, and social media messages To make it easy for others to participate, the Global Rewilding Alliance provided several materials to help stimulate the rewilding conversation on World Rewilding Day. These include the following: • A professional video translated into four languages • A media kit with a press release to be tailored by region and disseminating NGOs • Pre-prepared social media content and messages • An informative landing page about rewilding In the future, we will work to provide more materials tailored by region and language to make World Rewilding Day an even bigger success.

The

RESPONSE While there were too many great contributions on World Rewilding Day to pick a favorite, we would like to close this impact report with a poem written by one of our members that simply and beautifully captures the spirit of rewilding. For a more detailed account of Rewilding Day, please visit the summary blog written by the Global Rewilding Alliance co-director, Karl Wagner.
