INSTITUTE FOR ART AND ARCHITECTURE OTTO WAGNER LECTURE

The Institute for Art and Archi tecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is relaunching the acclaimed Otto Wagner Lecture series in 2018. The oeuvre of Otto Wagner, who was a professor at the Academy from 1894 to 1912, exemplifies the idea that architecture does not stand for itself alone, but is engaged in political, philosophical and scientific change, and even in crises. The annual lectures will give the floor to speakers addressing a wide range of topical issues that are relevant to contemporary debates in architecture and can serve to expand them.

The first speaker of the relaunch is Italian Marxist philosopher Antonio Negri. As a member of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025, he will speak on Europe’s crises and opportu nities. He is known for the trilogy Empire, Multitude and Commonwealth, co-authored with Michael Hardt and recently continued by Assembly. The new book looks at the ways contemporary move ments that are critical of capital ism are exploring new forms of collective organization.
