NO BUILDINGS …

There are no buildings anymore. Instead, there are agglomerations and conglomerations of sympathies that react to their visitors.

Sympathies react to vibes, brainwaves and needs. They are in part visualizations, in part materializations of requirements: temporary shelter, horizontality, relaxation, hunger, injury, analysis of the visitor’s zones of weakness, floating, healing, medipacks, and memories.

They come into being at the visitor’s wish.

They materialize as sympathetic territories.

They appear before the visitor as the consolidation of a mass of molecules. They take shape, take in the visitor, lift the visitor from the ground, draw the visitor to the safe zone, analyze brainwaves, reshape themselves, and lift off the ground entirely.

There are zones that synthesize energies, building up certain formations in order to blur with visitor functions, energy dispensed to visitors, dream production, mirroring of interstitial worlds, positional determination in the flow of reality and modulation of individual facts (news), becoming chromatic shades of colour. Combinations of head and heart, concentrations of swarming molecules and strays furnish and d ­ eliver information to one or more zones of energy synthesis. Some are smaller; some are larger. They change position, vary their speed, sway around a point or stand still.1

SLEEP 1 …

After building envelopes, skeletons and barriers have been dissolved, we begin to generate various, densified atmospheric states. Materiality distorts into molecular factors. Airspace becomes directly usable and workable. Sleepers sink more or less rapidly towards varying centres. The night lets foreign bodies bump gently against one another, mutually accelerating, throwing each other off course, sinking, touching the Earth’s surface in the morning. Opened membranes, free flow of particles – sleep positions, skin resolves, protections go, flows open, edges go, boundaries go, upside-down goes, fears go, liquids flow.2 SLEEP 2 …

Large corporate buildings will contain small public cells, bits of specialized libraries, community kitchens where celebrated chefs concoct the best vegetarian dishes, where recipes are exchanged, large exercise rooms, self-administrated table tennis clubs. A narrow bridge links the office grid to the community kitchens. It serves as a service and cleaning corridor. There are large sleeping areas, where warm summer nights are spent collectively in theta-wave dreams. It is an inversion of the food chain.3

ADP ANALOGUE DIGITAL PRODUCTION

Continous Rain. Sleep inside raindrop. Project by Martin Eichler

NO BUILDINGS, SLEEP 1 and SLEEP 2 are fragments of my projects WORLD 1+2, BVA 1 and SCHUTZHAUS, which I have carried with me for a long time and now, it seems they come back to me like a boomerang, like the return of the repressed. As narratives, they project certain architectural figurations by omitting key aspects of our physical reality and by following an associative flow of thoughts, maybe a comparable strategy to Marco Polo’s flow of speech when he was plotting, in front of Kublai Khan, 55 “Invisible Cities” that have to have some aspect of existence, since they are labelled as invisible. Imagining, or projecting into reality, are terms used by Donna Haraway when she introduces stories about Camille4, the daughter of the compostists, by simultaneously stating that such a storytelling practice might produce numerous mistakes, errors and embarrassments. However, all of that can be accepted in order to gain – at least within the realm of narration – a certain extension of the thinkable.

DO WE STILL NEED BUILDINGS? AND WHO ARE WE? ... is a project by students of IKA’s second semester, set up to question the reality of buildings – even before we know how to make them – and to continue the above thoughts by replacing the term SITE with ATMOSPHERE, and by having characters involved who are not just human. ATMOSPHERES to chew on where there is / Continuous Rain / Underwater / Water Surface Area / Wind / Draft / In the Air / In the Mist / Dew / Fire / Freezing Cold / Artificial Light / Daylight / Near Dark / 27 Humans / Long Spans / Explosion / Somebody Jumping in the Water / Monitored Environment / and CHARACTERS WHO ARE NOT JUST HUMAN, where there is a / colony of ants / water strider / chicken / various dogs and cats / cow approx. 600kg / mastodon / spider / butterfly / hologram / head-stander beetle / snail ... on that basis, the students then developed their projects: Micro-narrative – Dew ... In north Indian grassy landscapes, ex­periments are carried out with mutations of elephant grass. The grasses are “engineered”, genetically modified, so that to a certain degree, they generate an environment sympathetic to inhabitation by humans. At regular intervals, circular arrangements of oversized examples are found, whose leaves are considerably broader and more fan-shaped, far longer than the usual 70cm and with distinct fluting. The grasses’ surface character seems

to promote dew formation, leading to thin rivulets of dew along the fluting in the morning hours, all the way to the plant’s lower parts, where basin-shaped sub-leaves of various sizes have formed. The grasses lift and lower in concerted rhythms to collect and conduct water, or to form formidable surfaces for sojourns, beds, seats ... so inviting, apparently, that time and again, people have been observed living in the grasses for a few days ...

Micro-narrative – Continuous Rain ... puts c ­ ontinuous rain, the interior of a raindrop, an ant colony and two characters – who, to a certain degree, stand for Stephen Hawking and Karel Capek, or are modelled on them – in relation to one another. It is an incalculable, surreal play of two doppelgangers, in which a humanoid, articulated machine provides various sensors and functions of movement and communication for an Other who lacks precisely these abilities. What emerges – as an architectural construction – is a dual being in which the machine and the apparatus are humanised, individualised, and seemingly endowed with empathy.

ECOLOGY SUSTAINABILITY CULTURAL HERITAGE

To translate is a complex endeavour. It’s to seek, to measure, to ponder, to weigh and consider; it’s to appropriate, to question and counter, to anticipate and reproduce, to carry an item – to relocate it in space and time; it’s about close reading and about misreading, about opening and closing, it is: to state; it is also about re-presenting a once already formulated subject (possibly by means of different media) within or for a cultural context that might be far from the subject’s origin. It is a search for the expression of an accurate form – aware of and rigorous towards the subject’s provenance and destination.

All this is what authorship is about.

To draw is to translate; to translate is to convey; to convey is to create.

It challenged and augmented the dialogic function of the drawing beyond the context of representation. Drawings were used and understood as transformative design vehicles that, together with animations and combinations of physical and digital 3D models, investigated a variety of cultures of architectural design.

Students’ work consisted of the development of comprehensive design proposals for architectural structures (buildings), derived from the translation of selected precedents in the form of architectural drawings. To translate is to draw a distinction. The conditionalities of the resulting distinctions defined the nature of the students’ design proposals. Drawings thus obtain the function of translational design tools in the realm of cultural heritage.

Ferdinand Klopfer. One Hundred-Year Successional Forest-City

Prater is an artefact grown out of the histories of Vienna: a floodplain forest along the Danube. For many centuries, it was a royal hunting ground, and access for the public was as often forbidden as it was transgressed. The vast plan to control the flow of the Danube terraformed this space. To the north, it features a fairground, the location of the World Fair, an atomic reactor and an amusement park. It becomes a wild swamp forest to the south, not so far from an extensive refinery and oil tanks. Prater’s territories and jurisdictions shape-shift between wild, human and more than human, becoming the expression of a different city and triggering visions of unexpected urban models.

It is not a contradiction to view Prater as the most urban place of Vienna. The hypothesis is that Prater is also a model where the antagonism between city and nature is dissolved, conceiving of human and more than human creatures as equal and mutually dependent.

The design studio took into consideration the context of the Anthropocene – an era that marks a fundamental shift in the concept of modernity as well as of humanity, which we are only beginning to understand. This calls for an alternative history to feed the present moment and offer trajectories for different futures. The studio included a research part based on inductive methods and a mapping part about Prater, excursions with experts, and formulating hypotheses of urban models for the Anthropocene. The experts for the excursions in spring were Luise Schratt-Ehrendorfer (Plant Biogeography, University of Vienna), Michael Kubik (Vienna Municipal Department of Environmental Protection - MA 22), Ursula Storch (Wien Museum), Peter Sehnal (Entomology, Natural History Museum Vienna) and Karin Reisinger (Architecture and Critical Studies, Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm, IKA Academy of Fine Arts Vienna).

DEADWOOD During her excursion in March, the botanist Luise Schratt-Ehrendorfer described the wilder section of Prater as “the beautiful dead body”. In fact, due to regulation of the Danube river, this place is in the process of losing its alluvial characteristics and with them its specific forest; as a consequence, this part of Prater is beautifully scattered with deadwood. But deadwood is not dead, quite the opposite: it is a living organism, a habitat for numerous creatures, and a fascinating spatial structure in continual transformative decomposition. This strange and captivating living-dead organism inspired Marcella M. Brunner, Prima Mathawabhan and Patricia Tibu to explore and describe its mysterious conditions and unfamiliar architectural qualities in a series of drawings derived in part from elaborate digital scans. For this endeavour, the students applied Uexküll’s theory of environments in order to adopt different perspectives, human and more than human, in their approach to the deadwood.

ONE HUNDRED-YEAR SUCCESSIONAL FOREST-CITY The stagnant water of the former Danube branch “Unteres Heustadelwasser” in Prater is a relic of alluvial origins. Maintained artificially by a system of pipes, this stream is fed with water from the Danube in homeopathic doses. The neighbouring garden colonies would strenuously protest if their illegal cellars were flooded. However, the water pumped in is so polluted that amphibians have stopped breeding in the stream, opting instead for the ponds in the allotment gardens. Ferdinand Klopfer reacted to the idiosyncratic conditions of this place by redefining the parameters of what is considered nature and city. He based his project on a grid, projecting it for 100 years, generating a strangely dense and wild successional forest and grassland where urban, agricultural, natural and biological components closely affect one another.

Ideally, this system should take over the entire city.

Nils Neuböck and Felix Kofler were fascinated by the beauty of a biodiverse old meadow l­ocated below the elevated east-west highway ­(Tangente 23) in Prater, and drafted a new strategic plan for the city in which excessively trimmed public lawns and sterile traffic islands would acquire the same opulence of species and complexity of use as is found in Prater by adopting minimized management and a seriously reduced mowing regime. Simplicity is the engine of this effortless scheme. A film combined with a 3D animation was produced as an invitation to explore a sensual new architectural realm embodied in the rich aesthetics of a square-metre section of original meadow containing at least 20 different types of plants, hundreds of i­nsects, and an infinite number of microorganisms: ­Prater’s great piece of turf.

does not exist, something similar has happened with public space: it has stopped being the platform for discussing and agreeing on our common interests as a collective, and for constantly re-enacting our shared identity. Both public space and the house are phantoms of past times, present everywhere in non-corporeal forms – they are perhaps the most commented-on subjects in our discipline – but no longer possessed of a physical incarnation as real entities. The studio has fundamentally sought to address these subjects related to the domestic sphere by discussing if it is possible nowadays to render the definition of architectural languages compatible with the ways in which technology and virtual networks have changed not only the way we inhabit our personal spaces and socialize, but also how we create, consume and spread cultural assets.

A HOUSE FOR MANY, A PUBLIC SPACE FOR A FEW Based on some of the insights about the collective life brilliantly expressed by Roland Barthes in Comment vivre ensemble, the volume that contains the transcriptions of his notes for the course and seminar held at the Collège de France in 1976, we have been trying to rethink the spatial organizations and qualities that architecture for living together could adopt nowadays. We investigated the notion of the collective in relation to the domestic sphere, rethinking what a giant house could be: a public house for many or, if you want, a public space for a few; a real public space for interaction that could simultaneously be a domestic space in which to reinvent alternative ways of being in the world, through renewed forms of togetherness among its inhabitants.

By rethinking how the practices, activities and rituals usually associated with the categories of private and public can be merged into new sets, we paid attention to the forms of collective inhabitation that explore alternative ways of life, including the role of active or passive forms of production. The question if the public condition can inform how private space

can be formulated nowadays was the focus of discussion during the whole semester. Therefore, we asked ourselves what a public space that can be permanently inhabited would be like. What would a house, or a part of a house, that triggers communality and publicness be like? How small could a private space be? Could hygiene, rest or sleep be collective activities?

By examining the spatial conditions of communal inhabitation and redefining the living conditions of a group of individuals, from the simplest acts of daily life to those of a political nature, the students individually projected spaces for an extended family or an intentional community, following the tradition of libertarian communes, monasteries, anchorites, cooperatives, or simply the elective communities that, throughout history, have considered their life, and more specifically their collective way of life, as a conscious and creative act and decision.

The complete reformulation of both domestic and public space had the purpose of questioning the usual spatial arrangements, and of ordering and transforming the project into an architectural experiment that questioned the relationship between space and use or function, between language and character. We tried to formulate prototype(s) related to a specific community as a closed universe, a kind of self-contained microcosm in which to explore the relationship between individual and social constructions, and the relationship with the spatial orders they inhabit, with forms of production, technology and material culture.

THE QUEST FOR COMMUNALITY Like many authors before us (Reyner Banham and François Dallegret, among many others), we started by denying the existence of a contemporary incarnation of the home as we knew it. We continued not only with a radical rejection of the domestic space as a personal refuge (as opposed to the supposedly insincere life of the public man), as a shell to protect the self and as a personal projection, but also by disavowing the commonplace of the home as a place of absolute predominance of the self and the expression of subjectivity, through an affection for things and personal identification with them. Also, we promoted the denial of the house as a place of control and power. In other words, we negated it as the place of biological and social reproduction, related to sexuality and procreation, and as the site of perpetuation of predominant social orders.

As an important part of the course, we embarked on a study of spatial prototypes throughout history that were related to forms of collective inhabitation, beyond the usual recent precedents related to collective housing. Along with this historical enquiry, we carried out a series of specific studies based on the examination of contemporary forms of life in a series of case studies. Through them, the students realized the richness and complexity of their different collective formations based on common affects and communality, and examined the relationship between the artificial environments they inhabit and their lifestyles.

Unlike the elective communities of the past, these new forms of intentional communality are generally transient and ever changing. Among its members, unstable links are formed that reject permanent bonds based on closed and permanent social contracts. The world of radical ideology that marked these historical communities has been replaced by a network of connections based on affects, interests and bonds that are compatible with other alliances, and permit multiple and simultaneous affiliations to different groups and communities. Nowadays, these unstable social formations are usually based purely on mutual benefit, and politically supported by a looser ideological stance, but nevertheless the members are equally, or even more strongly, committed to the communal life.

The Deleuzian notion of assemblage (agencement) is extremely relevant to addressing these new forms of togetherness not based on a permanent social contract. What is an agencement? Gilles Deleuze explored this in his dialogues with Claire Parnet: “It is a multiplicity that involves many heterogeneous genres and that establishes unions, relationships among them, through ages, sexes and realms of different nature. It is never the filiations which are important but alliances and alloys; these are not successions, lines of descent, but contagions, epidemics, the wind.”

Each student was responsible for studying various elective communities to determine their social order, as well as the division and separation of spaces, and therefore the types of relations between spaces and activities in the different projects. One of the first steps during the semester was to establish a social subject or order, a federation of individuals who share space, on which to base each of the projects. The resulting social order arose from the study of a concrete and specific intentional community, and the displacement, the temporal and spatial adaptation of that order in the project. In a second step, and in order to establish an accurate location and to determine the relationships of the inhabitants to productive activities, the students proposed plausible and alternative productive models for the community, as a fundamental condition of the project; meaning, the way in which the community understands the part of life dedicated to its sustenance, if a division of tasks and work exists, or if there is a segregation and individualized treatment of tasks and work.

From among the Pásig River estuary in Manila, Gründerzeit blocks in Vienna, the former location of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens in Kennington, London, or the volcanic Isola di Nisida in Naples, the students individually selected and determined the specific sites for their projects, looking for opportunities where these new communes could be installed. The ADP spring semester studio, “A Big Communal House”, started from two basic premises: neither does the house of our time exist, nor is public space – as we formerly knew it – where the construction of the public realm happens. On the one hand, the current understanding of domestic space doesn’t correspond to our contemporary practices and forms of life, nor to the way digital technologies have infiltrated our everyday routines. On the other hand, physical interaction based on direct personal contact no longer constitutes the arena where the aspirations and common identity of communities are defined. In other words, the recent and brutal transformations of the way that notions of private and public realms are manifested nowadays haven’t been followed by equivalent changes in the architecture of domestic space, which remains immune to any major alteration.

There are many fields and instances in which conventional notions of privacy, intimacy and the domestic sphere have recently been challenged.

The usual notions of privacy are no longer inextricably linked to physical separation and distance, but are subjected to permanent debate due to virtual connections and presence, ubiquitous computing and constant exchange of data, with much of this happening in the realm of the secret territories that constitute our houses. We constantly expose our lives and lifestyles to others as the ultimate contemporary form of expression. The usual notions of intimacy and privacy – but also of communality, labour and ownership – are constantly questioned through the way digital technologies have been intermingled not only with every single one of our actions, but also with our biological selves. In this context, the productive processes associated with the digital economy have invaded every single corner and minute of our existence, taking over our personal territories, until recently considered as belonging to the spheres of privacy or intimacy, and exposing them not only to the scrutiny and examination of others, but to extreme personal impoverishment. If we can argue – as Mies van der Rohe did in 1931 – that the house of our time

FORMS OF THE COLLECTIVE This semester, the ADP platform proposed to intensify contact with reality as it happens, to critically address the problem of newness and, by extension, that of the production of novelty from the perspective of the discipline of architecture. We consciously approached the world around us, acting with a mixture of intellectual curiosity, creative practice and an inquisitive attitude.

Students examined the mechanisms involved in the emergence of the new, and studied the cultural, social and technological processes to which the creation of any kind of cultural artefact is inevitably linked nowadays.

As a necessary step in reconnecting the discipline with the reality out there, we proposed to act as technological inquirers, examining the processes of technological and cultural production in the digital era; critically approaching them without any kind of nostalgia, with the conviction that the practice of architecture is an activity of a public nature and – perhaps – one of the last physical manifestations of its kind.

Through the emergence of new forms of beauty that overcome the usual intrinsic contradictions of many architectural approaches, purely based on subjective individuality and arbitrariness, the studio’s approach rejected nostalgic entrenchment and, at the same time, opened up every aspect of the definition of our artificial environments to the complex scenarios that surround our practice. We embraced the complexity and inextricability of our world, not hesitating to study it in depth, and connecting the projects in significant ways with a vast array of technological and cultural materials, in a multiplicity of links with the things out there, without privileging their origin or affiliation.

Playfully embracing the most radical experimentation, and introducing several levels of reading and heteroglossia (discursive multiplicity), the students developed spatial modifications of our environment as small cosmologies that can be both a reflection of and an alternative to the complexity and inextricability of the contemporary condition of the world around us, of its precariousness and brutality, but also of its strange and fascinating beauty.

and social constructs, people and communities, and understanding the specific nature of private and public in each of the locations, and the possibility of proposing an alternative to them.

The domestic space has usually been the space to which inhabitants retire for a few hours after their social and productive life, and where they can develop their true self, their set of affections and obsessions.

The domestic space is therefore where urban cosmopolitan individuals can then supposedly exercise their own subjectivity without being subject to scrutiny and social approval, in which to develop personal hobbies, habits and deep convictions away from the restrictions that being with others entails. The space of the house is associated with a space of escape: to flee in order to practice a supposedly authentic existence. In the same way, the elective communities that sought to practice a way of life in accordance with their shared ideology undertook an escape, looking for other places to run away to. Escaping to another place, metaphorically as well as in reality, was one of the necessary premises to be able to found a new, alternative social order.

Nowadays, questions like where to go, where to escape to, or what is the next new territory open to wild opportunities, remain the same, but the answers are radically different. Today, autonomy and self-sufficiency do not necessarily imply remote places or isolation, neither real nor virtual, but rather the opposite. Cities or centres of production attract communities that, like the classical ones, seek to build their renewed social order for the very reason of their economic precariousness.

Self-exclusion has been replaced by social inclusion that seeks to overcome the difficulties of fitting into society, creatively seeking ways to cooperate in matters of life or production.

THE LAND WE LIVE IN – THE LAND WE LEFT BEHIND Brina Meze Petric This project looks at a town called Pachino, which emerged in the 17th century from Maltese migration. Even today, it preserves its distinctive character as a tight, urban-gridded core bordered on all sides by wheat fields.

Just after Easter 2018, we carried out a workshop in Ragusa. We worked together with art students from HFK Bremen and Professor Ingo Vetter. They were informed by the same parameters and had their own plans as to how to approach them. We stayed at a former fishing village that now lives on tourism called Marzamemi, one of the many villages that lived on tuna fishing until the tuna population was decimated. The abandoned tuna processing plants dotted all over the coast bear witness to this. The workshop included a beach clean-up and data collection following the principles established by the marine preservation organisation OceanCare. Silvia Frey, a neurobiologist from OceanCare, helped us develop a methodology so that our work could be recorded in their database. Our beach clean-up took place in the nature reserve of Vendicari, where we had special access to areas of conservation closed to the public.

Each group developed its own methods for cleaning and collecting. After the clean-up, we returned to see what new waste had washed up. We were so attuned to looking for pieces of plastic that they quickly became objects of an alternative archaeology for us, and our attitude to what would normally be termed archaeological remains changed. We visited several greenhouses and spoke with farmers, where we found a large disparity in working methods, from conservative and struggling to highly efficient, welloiled machines whose success lay in their ability to both adapt to the demands of customers from all over Europe, and to see value in the products that could only be grown in this particular region.

The potential inherent in the rediscovery of older practices, which could prove more effective than the industrial methods that had replaced them, was an observation we made on many occasions, from the humble bumblebee that now does the work of pollination to the use of ancient wheat, which is naturally low in gluten. Sicily was the breadbasket of both the Greek and the Roman empires.

We visited many abandoned buildings associated with the recent past of intensive fish processing, as well as train stations and buildings that were not even finished before they were abandoned.

We visited Gela, the 3000-year-old city with an oilfield and refinery at its centre and pollution problems on an epic scale.

Using this information and their empirical and research-based discoveries, the students developed five very diverse projects that were nonetheless intertwined.

Six Characters in Search of an Author is a play by the Sicilian author Luigi Pirandello, written in 1918 after the Great War, at a time when the future seemed hopeless and everything once valued was put into question, and first staged in 1921 to cries of “madhouse”. It is a piece of absurdist meta-theatre, because it represents ultimately meaningless actions and events, and draws attention to the nature of the play as theatre itself. The play begins with an acting company in rehearsal who are interrupted by the arrival of six strange people, who explain that they are in search of an author to finish their story. Nearly one hundred years later, the current geopolitical climate seems to forebode a similarly hopeless future, and a questioning of values we had once thought fought-for and won. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the island of Sicily, a Petri dish for the complexities we are facing. Our studio takes place in the region to the southeast known politically as Ragusa and geologically as the Iblean Plateau. Students were provided with related information about aspects of this region and asked to form their own constructs.

These are political projects intensely embedded in the Iblean Plateau and connected to global events.

Ragusa is the greenhouse capital of Italy, growing 30% of all Italian greenhouse produce. The industry favours this region not only because of the climate, but also the low cost of land and labour, fewer legal constraints on construction, and the availability of public development funds. It is nevertheless a precarious and low-profit undertaking. An exceptionally mild winter climate and fertile soils permit at least two harvests per year in cheap, light constructions covered in transparent plastic film. The existence of heating or ventilation systems is the exception, a very different form of cultivation from northern European neighbours. Often, from a distance, these oceans of plastic resemble the ocean itself in its waves and reflections.

There has been a marked increase in freak hailstorms and tornadoes induced by climate change, laying waste to whole areas of cultivation. Since 2015, when routes via Turkey were effectively closed by a pact with the European Union, Sicily and specifically the Iblean Plateau has become the first port of arrival for refugees from the African continent. The Iblean plateau sits on the African tectonic plate, and actively slides over and back underneath the European plate, resulting in cracks and rips, Mount Etna being the most prominent manifestation.

It has often been the case that migrants arrived in Ragusa, were processed, and went straight to work in the greenhouses, providing much-needed cheap labour. Sometimes a win-win situation, this has often paved the way for exploitation, with long hours and inadequate pay and housing, where plastic is the most common building material. The refugees go to work in plastic tents and come back to plastic tents. Until recently, Ragusa had been fairly free of Mafia corruption, since agriculture is not profitable enough, but the exploitation of refugees is very lucrative. As of 2015, humanity had produced over 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic, outstripping all man-made materials other than steel and cement. Of this total, 6.3 billion metric tons – almost one metric ton per person – have become waste. Plastic doesn’t biodegrade, it just gets smaller, creating micro-plastic, much of it making its way to the ocean, which washes up new pieces with every tide. Shockingly, many Internet forums equate the increase in waste with the arrival of migrants. Plastic is wonderful because it is so durable, but also terrifying because it is so durable.

The studio explored the kaleidoscopic assemblage that shapes every great modern city, the interrelation between urban dimensions and the scale of architectural elements, and the question of public architecture and what of it remains public. Drawing on Walter Benjamin’s assemblage technique, a collage collection of scattered observations of urban life aims to record and let connections occur in an experimental fashion. The first part of the studio was devoted to research and the production of convolutes, booklets, and analytical and conceptual mapping. Following this, students engaged with the critical issues previously discovered in specific areas.

Are trade and commodification inherent in all urban fabrics? Can new typologies of public space and (public) architecture be invented? What are today’s interrelations between the economic activities that take place in such (global/local) places, and the nature of the space, and space at large, that results from it? What new practices may they sustain and provoke? What new typologies?

What is the role of architecture in the “experience economy”? Students comparatively tested multi-disciplinary and multi-format design approaches through diverse media and a wide, unconventional variety of sources (mapping, film, ­drawing).

“A genuine mysticism shaped the most perfect Zauberberg that the Socialist municipality of Vienna has created.” – To the Italian architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri, Karl-Marx-Hof (Karl Marx Court), the best-known residential complex of Red Vienna, built in 1927-1930

by Karl Ehn, embodied “a collective ego”, called upon to “recognise itself in a conflict with society”. An admittedly tragic conflict: though the “play of forms” pursued by the architects of Vienna municipal housing expressed a “longing for a lost totality”, the gigantic complexes were deemed merely nostalgic camouflage for their solipsism, their aloneness in the early 20th century world of bourgeois, capitalist society.

In the 1970s, Tafuri headed a group of colleagues from Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia travelling to Vienna to thoroughly study the municipal housing projects of Red Vienna from the perspective of architectural history for the first time; for the eminent historians of modern architecture, such as Leonardo Benevolo, Sigfried Giedion and Henry Russell Hitchcock, had studiously ignored them, deeming the traditional, would-be monumental style of Vienna municipal housing to

be conservative and inappropriate for a socialist, progressive housing programme of the type implemented in exemplary fashion in Ernst May’s New Frankfurt, the various garden-city settlements by Martin Wagner and Bruno Taut in Berlin, and the Werkbundsiedlungen.

Though the study, published by Tafuri and his colleagues in 1980 under the title Vienna Rossa (and preceded by an exhibition of the same name), brought together the constructional aspects of Red Vienna between 1919 and 1934 for the first time and also included all available plans, drawings and photographs, it was not a study of architectural history in the conventional sense. Tafuri was a protagonist of the neo-Marxist debates in Italy during the post-war decades. He subjected the buildings to severe ideological criticism in the Marxist sense, accusing them of having at best expressed the crises of the era (mostly in a nostalgic, pathos-laden and romanticising way) instead of helping to structurally overcome them. Although – or because – Vienna Rossa has not been published in German to date, many historians and theoreticians of architecture to this day consider Tafuri’s study signif-

icant, even if practically none of them have followed his conclusions, instead using them ever since as an opportunity to sing the praises of the buildings of Red Vienna in volumes large and small.

At the Institute for Art and Architecture, a small group of seven students explored the myth of the study, its reception, consequences and theoretical significance in a time of increasing criticism of capitalism, in the course of a Master’s studio of the platform History | Theory | Criticism. In cooperation with Architekturzentrum Wien, the results of the students’ research will be shown from 26th September 2018 in the Schaufenster showcase, and from January 2019 – on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Red Vienna – in the permanent exhibition.

SILVESTER KREIL, HOW RED IS MUN­ICIPAL HOUSING STILL? ((Abstract)) A voyage from the past to the present, exploring the question of whether or not Vienna municipal housing is still politically informed and inextricably linked to the Social Democratic city government today, based on five examples of buildings. A polemic in the form of a video podcast, veering into subjective territory. ((Excerpts from the spoken text)) “Prefabricated construction replaced brick buildings in new construction of Vienna m ­ unicipal housing from the 1960s onwards. With an average of 9000 newly built flats per year, it was also the most productive era. Höfe, however, remained part of the programme in name only. (…) Functional, modern dormitory communities instead of the workers’ Red Vienna. (…) For this reason, and also due to the general depoliticization brought about by the economic miracle and the consumption system of capitalism, municipal housing increasingly lost its political relevance. (…)

As the first project of the new era, a municipal housing complex was built in the 10th district, at Fontanastrasse 1. (…) However, the project can hardly be compared to earlier municipal housing. In terms of generous and radical political action, little remains in today’s municipal housing of its beginnings in Austro-Marxist Vienna. (…) Especially now that the share of income spent on rent has once again risen to an average of one quarter, which had been what led to Red Vienna’s municipal housing efforts in the first place.

Securing the land as a resource for the municipality can arguably be considered as the main achievement of Vienna’s municipal housing programme. (…) As long as the land and the buildings remain its property, the City of Vienna and its inhabitants will continue to be far less at the mercy of the laws of the capitalist market than most comparable cities.”

((Abstract)) Between 1919 and 1934, no fewer than 199 architects worked to implement the Austro-­Marxist construction programme of Red Vienna. Their stories are more subjective than the hi-stories of their architecture. Because their role as bourgeois architects during Austro-Marxism was anachronistic, the Italian architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri described them as “tragic”.

The figure of the bourgeois tragic hero was one that György Lukács explored in his seminal work “The Theory of the Novel”, describing Cervantes’ Don Quixote as an example of this type of tragic hero. But were the bourgeois architects of Red Vienna also tilting at windmills in the manner of tragic heroes? For architects are committed to architecture, as Don Quixote is to chivalry.

The book “Who Built Your Red Vienna? – The Stories of the ‘Tragic’ Builders” traces the lonely paths of these figures in a series of short stories. ((Excerpt)) Karl Ehn, a servant of many masters.

Karl-Marx-Hof was his pride and joy.

Ever at the service of the city, he weathered all political storms. As a political chameleon, or simply apolitical to his core, Karl Ehn managed to hold Vienna’s urban planning department for more than 40 years. Before, he had studied architecture under Otto Wagner. During his studies with the master, he designed public baths, among other things. His baths have a monumental aspect – expansive, strictly symmetrical bathing palaces that dominate open spaces. (…)

His chef-d’oeuvre, Karl-Marx-Hof, was a source of pride to him: a housing complex with a monumental aspect.

“With fanatical devotion, I have felicitously accomplished the task set for me, and found enthusiastic acclaim as the author of this mighty construction, I dare say all around the world!” he wrote in 1949, at the end of his career and just before his retirement, to Theodor Körner, Vienna’s mayor at the time. Throughout his life, Karl Ehn strove for recognition of his oeuvre, but was denied it, even by the city’s Socialist politicians, while he was alive.

NAOMI MITTEMPERGHER, THE GROSSFORM – POLITICAL ARCHITECTURE ((Abstract)) Under the municipal residential construction programme of Red Vienna, some 400 mass housing projects were built as large-scale blocks between 1922 and 1934, at a time when garden cities and housing estates were the preferred building forms for workers’ flats.

Superblocks like the housing courts in Vienna only sprang up increasingly in mass housing construction during the post-war era, especially in the 1960s, and it was also then that architectural theory first began to study the housing construction of Red Vienna in the interwar years. Once architecture criticism no longer focused on the very traditional style of the Viennese housing courts, it acknowledged the experimental nature and value of the housing programme.

I approached the topic of Großform in the mass housing construction of Red Vienna by way of studies such as Die Wiener Superblocks (1969)

by Joachim Schlandt, Großformen im Wohnungsbau (1966) by Oswald Mathias Ungers and Vienna Rossa (1977) by Manfredo Tafuri, as well as texts and essays by Joachim Schlandt, Karla Kraus, Oswald Mathias Ungers, Manfredo Tafuri, Erika Mühlthaler, Klaus Novy and others. Furthermore, I sought to describe and situate the political aspects of the building style in the context of class struggle and the political situation in Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s.

Was large-block mass housing construction in Red Vienna grounded in a definite political theory and worldview?

Did the Social Democratic government deliberately choose the Großform for mass housing construction in order to spread its political positions among the working classes, and to concentrate them in these superblocks? These questions are answered in a 20-minute audio podcast. The audio podcast is also available online.

ADRIAN MAN, HEAVENLY OBJECTS, FROM ANTHROPOLOGICAL ABSTRACTION TO ARCHITECTURAL REIFICATION If abstraction is etymologically related to trahere, meaning to draw or extract, reification is its symmetrical counterpart, bringing the abstract into the realm of physical things. With this in mind, Heavenly Objects investigates abstraction starting from a distinctive neurological viewpoint, continuing with anthropological hypotheses, and concluding with abstraction in architectural form.

Assuming and emphasizing that architectural forms are (formal) apparatuses addressing the production of subjectivity through a clear set of architectural boundaries, the aim is to re-examine the relationship between subject and form. Can abstract, subjective dispositions transcend architectural form, and ultimately, do we still need magnificent form objects in order to emancipate ourselves?

LUKA SOLA, ABOUT WOMEN AND THE GEMEINDEBAUTEN – THE POTENTIAL TO SUBVERT THROUGH FEMINIST MINDED ECOLOGIES As Mouffe and Laclau put it: “Austro-Marxism should now be clear: insofar as the practical efficacy of autonomous political intervention is broadened, the discourse of ‘historical necessity’ loses its relevance and withdraws to the horizon of the social (…). This, in turn, requires a

proliferation of new discursive forms to occupy the terrain left vacant.”

The provision of a mutually shared consciousness, to be fortified with state-created facilities, rejected the subjectivity of the particular. Mouffe and Laclau suggested that in order to mobilize a social group with a certain concern, certain principles first need to be imposed on the matrix of the social imaginary. So in order to mobilize a group with a feminist concern, the democratic principles of equality and liberty first had to be imposed in order to be able to perceive new forms of oppression. In Vienna, women obtained their rights in 1919, quite late in comparison, and the municipal building program was launched only in 1923. The party’s well-designed welfare system, enabling cheap rents through the maintenance of taxation of the wealthy (through which women were advantaged and the need for two jobs was eliminated), together with the previously mentioned notion of the rejection of particularity and the state tendency for unification, explain the female paradox of disengagement.

Additionally, Austro-Marxism, a deriv­ a­tive of Marxism, naturally challenged neither the question of female oppression nor that of reproductive work.

FLAVIA MAZZANTI, THE RED PSYCHE: A BRIDGE BETWEEN PSYCHOANALYSIS, EDUCATION AND ARCHITECTURE – A VOYAGE FROM THE ERA OF RED VIENNA TO THE PRESENT DAY ((Abstract)) Fascinated by psychoanalysis even in his youth, the Italian architect and theoretician Manfredo Tafuri had delved more deeply into it from the 1970s onwards by way of the writings of the Italian philosopher Franco Rella about Sigmund Freud and “Freudian criticism”, as he called it.

At the same time, Tafuri studied the housing policies of Socialist Red Vienna together with a group of young Italian architects from Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia. However, the resulting publication Vienna Rossa drew no explicit connection between Freudian psychoanalysis and the years of Red Vienna, even though there were very concrete links, especially through Anna Freud as a connecting figure, since she was familiar with Vienna’s progressive education movement and advocated for the theories of psychoanalysis to be applied in social housing projects of Red Vienna, primarily in kindergartens and schools. Accordingly, the work presented here shows that Freud’s psychoanalysis had transcended the conservative, bourgeois framework and had a concrete impact on architecture, while also challenging it continually to this day at the theoretical level.

IKLIM DOGAN, IDEOLOGY – SO BE IT ((Abstract)) Ideology – So Be It is a fictional, absurd dialogue in the form of a play about two imaginary characters talking about the ideology and forms of Red Vienna, discussing and criticizing it from architectural and political perspectives. The play starts with the two characters, Lou and Grace, sitting on a bench in front of the main front court of Karl-Marx-Hof and watching kids draw the tower-like structure of Karl-Marx-Hof on the wall. ((Excerpt)) GRACE: (makes a grimace) This is a very absurd figure.

LOU: What?

GRACE: The symbol of Karl-MarxHof. LOU: You mean the six tower-like structures?

GRACE: Hans Hollein made a “symbol” out of it. A symbol of social housing projects during the 1920’s: Red Vienna. […]

LOU: A stronghold in the north of the city, next to the train station, where the left army could defend its symbolic structure. […]

LOU: The aim of Austro-Marxism was not to build garden cities in suburbs, as was popular in Germany at the time, but rather to rebuild the inner city: to make the city proletarian. On the other hand, Karl-Marx-Hof failed to be attached to its urban context, and also failed to represent the aims of Austro-Marxism.

GRACE: Is it architecture’s failing that ended in the decline of Social Democracy, or is it politics’ fault that architecture became a failure?

LOU: […] I believe that [architecture and politics] […] have an impact on each other, or that they have a common ground: ideology. Architecture in its forms, politics in its performativity, is the expression of ideology.

One can even say that politics has a mouth, and architecture shapes that mouth. […]

GRACE: […] [I]t is not the architecture that is filled with these symbolic meanings; it is what occurs socially and politically that charges it with meaning. […]

LOU: The aim of ideological criticism of architectural ideology is not to revolt; it is rather an attempt to identify those tasks that capitalism took away from architecture. That is, what is taken away from ideological prefiguration; a need to return to pure architecture, to form without utopia for sublime uselessness. […]

LOU: The absurdity of living in a tower. And while you are living in it, you are not aware of it. While you are in it, you do not think about the tower.

You might complain about the plans, which were distorted in order to create these arc openings.

GRACE: So what you are trying to say is that I am not aware of the materiality of the thing I am living in, while I am living in it.

LOU: Yes. Just like you never think about the material quality of money, like paper, while you spend it. There is a gap between what you do and what you think about it.

GRACE: (Looks as if she is still not satisfied.)

LOU: I know you have a beautiful house in the 19th district, with a garden and so on. The shapes you live in look similar from the outside, while here in this court, the plans are so distorted that one can never perceive where they are. That is the illusion behind it.

GRACE: Well, the lady on the balcony right on the arm of the symbol (points her out with her finger) looks like she’s enjoying her coffee. (They both smile. Silence for a moment.) […]

LOU: Karl-Marx-Hof also dissociates itself from its environment, from its users, by making itself an “individual”.

It is rather a proletarian monument, but how come? As an icon of the reforms, of emancipation. But how come real emancipation is again writing down theories, petrifying them?

GRACE: Albert Camus once said, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

HORTUS ALIENUM – SCENOGRAPHIES OF NOBODY’S VOYAGE corpus <poris> nt – body aliēnum <ı̄ > nt (alienus) – property of another corpus alienum – foreign body hortus <ı̄ > m – garden, park

Hortus Alienum is a collaged term composed of the Latin word for garden, maybe even paradise, and the word for alien, foreign. At the same time, my project’s name explicitly plays with the analogy to corpus alienum – foreign body – and describes the construct’s function as an estrangement device in the context of Berthold Brecht’s alienation effect (Verfremdungseffekt) in epic theatre.

The narration that the estrangement device Hortus Alienum is built to house, to satisfy, is a modern odyssey – Nobody’s voyage. The protagonist of Hortus Alienum is called Nobody, translated from the Greek outis, a minimization of Homer’s Ulysses, and I will let him start the show.

Truman’s mother: [looking through a photo album] Here’s us at Mount Rushmore. Do you remember, Truman? When Dad was still with us? That was quite a drive; you slept the whole way there.

Truman: [looking more closely at the old photo of himself as a boy with his parents in front of an inaccurate mock-up of Mount Rushmore] It looks so small.

Truman’s mother: [quickly turning the page] Things always do when you look back, darling.

WHO IS NOBODY? The protagonist of The Truman Show, Truman, is born, brushes his teeth, and gets his first kiss in front of a camera, with the entire world following and witnessing his life. He lives on a movie set, surrounded by background actors, in the picturesque island town of Seahaven.

The most striking moment in Peter Weir’s movie might be when Truman finally dares to escape his prison, the movie set. He gets into a boat and sails until he reaches the boundary of his world – the wall of a giant dome painted as a horizon. Unlike in Disneyland, in this case, the illusion dome is the actual built, physical boundary defining the themed space of the narration that pretends to be the world.

The childhood memory of the family trip to Mount Rushmore is nothing but a construct, an implanted memory filling a page of a scripted existence.

What the tragic figure of Truman has in common with related characters such as Everyman or Odysseus is that, messiah-like and representative of humanity and the audience, they experience happiness, sin, deception, revelation, and perhaps catharsis or liberation.

RESEARCH On the periphery of Paris, 45 minutes by car from the city centre, lies Val d’Europe, an urban development area with a diameter of almost 3km, developed by Euro Disney’s real estate division. In its northern part, there is a theme park.

The Disney company, founded in 1923 by the famous cartoonist and businessman Walt Disney, developed its tactics of creating themed spaces over the years, learning from its very first steps in Anaheim, California (1955), where third parties had bought and developed the park’s neighbouring grounds, which led to utter urban sprawl, and a loss of control and money for the company. From then on, they would not repeat the same mistake, instead influencing the grounds surrounding the park – they would create an island around their island.

Thus, the idea of themed space doesn’t start at the gates of Disneyland, where you need a ticket to enter, but rather at the boundary of Val d‘Europe.

I don’t want to go too far into the built style, the architecture of the development area; suffice it to say that Disneyland Paris served as an extremely multi-layered case study for my project. One thing led to another, and via the obvious influences of postmodern protagonists, not to mention New Urbanist imports, back to the “Old World”.

I had a closer look at Celebration, a master-planned Disney community in Florida, and ended up with Seaside (1946), another example of a highly engineered structure projecting the image of an “intact” small-town idyll, and the location of the film The Truman Show (1998).

WHERE IS NOBODY? Hortus Alienum – Scenographies Of Nobody’s Voyage tells the story of a very specific, very random figure’s journey through an illusory landscape, an estrangement device. The themed ground of the park landscape is a translation of the central Dalmatian coastline and its islands, which I take as a model, developing landscape designs and architectural interventions on and in between them, thereby putting them in relation.

Nobody starts his voyage probably by being lifted up or set down into the alternative, translated reality of the designed garden where he shall wander. He starts at the Airfield, the centre of the world with the coordinates and thereby name of 0,0,0. We can already see the directions of the voyage inscribed in the topology, pointing in the cardinal directions of the voyage’s stations. The names are inspired by the airfield’s runway, referring again to the mutual relations of the sites – a key element of the sites’ designs.

From Act I – from 0,0,0 – Nobody travels over the pier and then follows a drone boat toward 1230, the Quarry. Here, the “stair that sings” is a first allusion to the Ulysses myth (the Sirens). Nobody can’t believe that the seductive sounds have a non-human source, until the end, when two hands force him into the next scene.

From Act II to Act III, he enters 11-29, The Tunnel in The Mountain, again led by the boat … which, this time, doesn’t even try to fake its function and becomes a door to the next act.

Act III serves as another strong allusion to mythology, when a sheep, the only other living creature in the entire park, and the formal interventions of the one-eye and the cave are introduced, reminding us of the Cyclops Polyphemus’ story, where Nobody – outis – learned his name in order to escape.

The voyage ends at the Garden That Grows Into The Sky. The protagonist moves through scenographies built in order to create an illusion, perfectly choreographed, and provoking again and again the question or even conclusion spoken by Nobody at the end of Act II, “that there was no alternative to this movement, this path”; that Nobody actually has anything but free will and choice, and follows the plan in the script.

He is very similar to the above-mentioned Truman, or even Everyman, who did nothing but what society and the world he lived in had taught him, and at the end let himself be judged by their hypocritical blame for what they had once taught him. In this way, the estrangement device Hortus Alienum raises the question of the authenticity and individuality of personal experience, instinct or indoctrination, and thereby not least the credibility of Nobody’s – and our own – free will.

But this is not how the story ends. Because Hortus Alienum is a project dedicated to the tragic figure of Nobody, who realizes in the end what was stolen, what was taken away from her/him … not even a memory anymore … something that was not lost forever.

KEIMENO A kiosk, to provide not only basic infrastructure, such as water and shade, is also intended to refer to the phenomenon of vanishing kiosks in the city of Athens.

Licenses to own a kiosk were given only to those who were disabled during the war. Abruptly, the number of kiosks grew greatly, and they became a very important social place in people’s everyday lives. But now, the popular kiosks are vanishing due to the law that only allows war veterans to own them.

An observatory is proposed in reference to an archaeological find from the past, a pyramid structure. It gives a view of the site, the sky and the city, but also of the derelict structures left over from the 2004 Olympic Games.

As a last intervention, “The garden of the slowest plants to ever blossom” is proposed, and is also meant to serve as a metaphor. By deciding to only seed plants that take exceptionally long to bloom, this part is intended simply as a reminder of the aspect of time. A hidden water tower is to be constructed where once natural streams flowed. The water tower is designed to help maintain the garden and reactivate the natural resources in the ground. The structure is entirely surrounded by almond trees. Inside the garden, the slowest plants to ever blossom are hidden and protected.

Overall, the project is not a gesture towards a state of perfection or ideal harmony. It partially choreographs a situation, and is designed as a series of sequences, describing and defining the whole site. New places are invented, yet a gap is left in the lines of planning. What can be read in these fragments of decay, what becomes visible in this collapse, can at the same time be perceived as the substance of something new.

The last kiosk

The area of Hellinikon in Athens, Greece, can be seen as a large fragmented field, as “fallen apart”, yet it can also be conceived of as reading material on the history of the place. The project “keimeno” is a collection of fragments, movies, models, drawings and three interventions, describing a vast field in the middle of Athens, which, due to various economic and social circumstances, adapted to large projects for a certain time, yet never fully accepted any long-term use. It is a space of arrival, hope, joy, and of refuge, crisis, ruins, of transition and transformation, creating a weird sense of equilibrium. The project describes different “fragments” on the site, which may appear as a rather chaotic landscape at first glance.

All over the area of the former international airport of Athens, we can see structures and artefacts in various states of decay. Thus, the vast field is seen rather as a huge, expanded archaeological site. The decayed forms and structures are not regarded as romanticized ruins, nor as spectacles meant to evoke an exposure of the sublime. There is no nostalgia, no wish to get the site back to a certain point in time. The fragments illustrate the field from different perspectives, shifting between time, place and scale, between construction and deconstruction, and between shifting political climates. The project operates within the fragmentary aesthetics of these spatial conditions. As a response and an instrument to highlight certain qualities, three rather small interventions are proposed on site.

It is also an anachronism to endow pure technology with an expressive value, which is not to be found in the technology itself, but arises only from its application. BT: Man muss vielmehr zu den allereinfachsten Fragen zurückgreifen und sich zuerst einigermaßen klar zu werden suchen, was überhaupt Architektur ist. Ich zögere keinen Augenblick, diese Frage zunächst so zu beantworten: Architektur ist eine Kunst. Wodurch unterscheidet sich diese Kunst von den anderen Künsten? Welches sind ihre Voraussetzungen? Die Technik gibt den Gebäuden jene Solidität, die sie vor den Unbilden des Wetters schützt, die Konstruktion die Festigkeit, damit das Gebäude den Naturgewalten standhält, und die Funktion alle jene Eigenschaften, die den Aufenthalt in einem Gebäude, seine Benutzung angenehm und erfreulich machen. (…) Doch bei weiterem Nachdenken kommt man damit nicht weiter. Wenn Architektur wirklich eine Kunst ist, so können solche nüchternen Begriffe unmöglich ihre Voraussetzungen sein, und keineswegs in dem Maße, daß von der Technik, Konstruktion oder Funktion eine Architektur abhängt, geschweige denn erzeugt werden kann. Man kann also nicht mehr sagen, als daß diese drei Dinge Hilfsmittel bedeuten, durch die die Architektur ins Leben tritt, oder besser: mit denen sie ins Leben treten kann.

OW: Ein großes Gewicht hat der komponierende Archi­tekt auf die perspektivische Wirkung zu legen, das heißt, er muß Silhouette, Massenverteilung, Gesimsausladungen, Verschneidungen, die Plastik der Profile und Ornamente etc. so anordnen, daß sie von einem Schaupunkte aus, in richtiger Betonung erscheinen. Dieser Punkt wird natürlich immer derjenige sein, von welchem das Werk am häufigsten, leichtesten und natürlichsten betrachtet werden kann.

Otto Wagner: Was die Ausgestaltung unserer Räume anlangt, so ist es den Künstlern gelungen, heute schon wenigstens soweit auf die Menge einzuwirken, daß sich der Gedanke festigt, die Erscheinung und die Funktionen des Bewohners sollen mit der Raumerscheinung stimmen. (...) Einfach, wie unsere Kleidung, sei der Raum, den wir bewohnen. (...) Unter den textilen Erzeugnissen spielt der Teppich eine Hauptrolle; ihm seien einige Zeilen gewidmet.

Der Wandteppich entzieht sich eigentlich der Besprechung, weil er in künstlerischer Beziehung (...) ganz ungebunden ist. (...) Der Teppich als Bodenbelag hat in erster Linie als Annehmlichkeit und zur Sicherheit von Personen beim Gehen zu dienen. Die Unhörbarkeit der Schritte, die Wärme und Wohnlichkeit, die er dem Raume verleiht, und das Verhindern des Ausgleitens sind die Hauptgründe seiner Anwendung. Künstlerisch ermöglicht der Teppich eine vollkommene Farbstimmung des Raumes. Völlig verwerflich ist jede unruhige (...) Linienführung oder gar eine, welche Formen bringt, die dem Auge plastisch erscheinen und dadurch Unsicherheit und Unbehagen bei Benützung desselben erzeugen.

OW: Das praktische Element, mit welchem die Mensch­heit heute durchtränkt ist, lässt sich eben nicht aus der Welt schaffen, und jeder Künstler wird sich endlich zu dem Satze bequemen müssen: „Etwas Unpraktisches kann nie schön sein“. (…)

Ein Miethaus, welches mit unmotivierten Risaliten, Thürmen und Kuppeln prunkt oder unter der Maske des Palastes stolziert, sogenannte stilvolle Möbel, auf welchen man unbequem sitzt etc., wirken alle gleich albern, es sind eben künstlerische Lügen. (…) Die Composition hat sich aber noch vielen anderen Dingen ersichtlich anzuschliessen. Die wichtigsten darunter sind: die zur Verfügung stehenden pecunären Mittel, die geographische Lage, die Berücksichtigung der Weltgegenden, die voraussichtliche Dauer der Benützbarkeit, (…).

HRH, PJ: In its most generally accepted form the idea of functionalism is sufficiently elastic. (…)

The doctrine of the contemporary anti-aesthetic functionalist is much more stringent. Its basis is economic rather than ethical or archaeological. (…) Architects like Hannes Meyer go further. They claim that interest in proportions or in problems of design for their own sake is still an unfortunate remnant of nineteenth century ideology. (…) Modern construction receives from them a straightforward expression.

(…) hier sei nur erwähnt, daß sich die Komposition stets dem Materiale und der Technik zu fügen hat, und nicht umgekehrt. (…) Die Komposition hat sich aber noch vielen anderen Dingen ersichtlich anzuschließen. Die wichtigsten darunter sind: die zur Verfügung stehenden pekuniären Mittel, die geographische Lage, die Berücksichtigung der Weltgegenden, die voraussichtliche Dauer der Benützbarkeit, die Forderung des ästhetischen Einfügens in die Umgebung, eine der Innenstruktur völlig entsprechende Außenerscheinung etc. (…) Ein logisches Denken muß uns daher zur Überzeugung führen, daß der Satz: „jede Bauform ist aus der Konstruktion entstanden und sukzessive zur Kunstform geworden“, unerschütterlich ist. OW: Als die Krone des modernen Menschen in seiner glücklichen Vereinigung von Idealismus und Realismus wurde der Architekt gepriesen.

Leider empfindet nur er selbst, während die Mitwelt wenig teilnehmend abseits steht, das Wahre dieses Ausspruches, und auch ich muss, auf die Gefahr hin, des Größenwahns geziehen zu werden, in das Preislied einstimmen.

JB: Befindet sich der Architekt daher nicht in der Realität, sondern in der Fiktion einer Gesellschaft, in einer antizipatorischen Illusion? Oder übersetzt er ganz einfach, was bereits da ist? In diesem Sinn möchte ich die Frage stellen: Gibt es eine Wahrheit der Architektur – im Sinne einer transsensiblen Bestimmung der Architektur und des Raumes?

OW: Dieses angeborene Können besteht vorwiegend aus Phantasie, Geschmack und manueller Fähigkeit; und gerade diese Eigenschaften sind es, welche bei der Berufswahl des Architekten so schwer ins Gewicht fallen und gegen welche von Seite der Berufsbestimmer so viel gesündigt wird. Es können ja Lust und Liebe von Seite des Jüngers vorhanden sein, wenn aber Phantasie, Geschmack und manuelle Fähigkeit oder auch nur eine dieser Eigenschaften fehlen, so ist alle Mühe der Ausbildung umsonst.

FM: Aber wo befinden sich die Grenzen der Freiheit des Architekten, ab wann muss er sich mit internationalen Beziehungen, Politik und Wissenschaft beschäftigen? Das Hauptproblem ist, dass der Architekt nicht die Wahl des Ergebnisses, sondern nur die Wahl des Konzepts hat.

OW: Die Hauptursache, warum die Bedeutung des Architekten nicht voll gewürdigt wird, liegt in der von ihm bisher verwendeten Formenwelt, in seiner an die Menge gerichtete Sprache, welche derselben in den meisten Fällen völlig unverständlich blieb.

JB: Das Abenteuer des Architekten liegt in einer ganz besonderen Lage – nicht wie ein Künstler im herkömmli­chen Sinn. Er arbeitet mit einem Team und ist in einer Situation, in der er zensuriert wird, direkt oder indirekt, im Namen der Sicherheit, des Geldes oder des Berufsstandes.

Wo bleibt dabei der Raum der Freiheit, wo ist das Mittel, um diese Zwänge zu überwinden?

Beatriz Colomina, Mark Wigley: Between the bed inserted in the office and the office inserted in the bed a whole new horizontal architecture has taken over. It is „magnified“ by the „flat“ networks of social media that have themselves been fully integrated into the professional, business, and industrial environment in a collapse of traditional distinction between private and public, work and play, rest and action. The bed itself – with its ever more sophisticated mattress, linings, and technical attachments – is the basis of an intrauterine environment that combines the sense of deep interiority with the sense of hyper-connectivity to the outside.

What is the nature of this new interior in which we have decided collectively to check in? (...)

New media turns us all into inmates, constantly under surveillance, even as we celebrate endless connectivity. (...) OW: Eine einfache klare Grundrissdisposition bedingt meist die Symmetrie des Werkes.

Es liegt etwas Abgeschlossenes, Vollendetes, Abgewogenes, nicht Vergrösserungsfähiges, ja Selbstbewusstes in einer symmetrischen Anlage, auch Ernst und Würde, die steten Begleiterinnen der Baukunst, verlangen sie. Erst dort, wo Platzform, Mittel, Utilitätsgründe überhaupt die Einhaltung der Symmetrie unmöglich machen, ist eine unsymmetrische Lösung gerecht­fertigt. (…)

HRH, PJ: This second principle of contemporary style in architecture has to do with regularity.

The supports in skeleton construction are normally and typically spaced at equal distances in order that stains may be equalized. (…) The Greek meaning of symmetry, „a due proportion of several parts,“ was nearly equivalent to this special meaning of regularity. But Greek symmetry was usually bilateral as well as regular. Axial symmetry has generally been used to achieve the ordering of irregularity, as in Baroque architecture (…). The mark of the good modern architect, on the other hand, is that regularity of his designs approaches bilateral symmetry. (…) Occasionally, indeed, he even reaches it.

OW: Zur Composition gehört auch, man könnte sagen, die Strategie der Baukunst. Es soll darunter das richtige Zusammenwirken mit den Schwesterkünsten Sculptur und Malerei verstanden sein. Nie darf der Architekt, in solchem Falle, den Commandostab aus der Hand legen.

OW: Die Frage: „Wie sollen wir bauen?“ kann wohl nicht strikte beantwortet werden; unser Gefühl musz uns aber heute schon sagen, dasz die tragende und stützende Linie, die tafelförmige Durchbildung der Fläche, die gröszte Einfachheit und ein energisches Vortreten von Konstruktion und Material bei der künftigen, neuerstehenden Kunstform stark dominieren werden; die moderne Technik und die uns zu Gebote stehenden Mittel bedingen dies. Selbstredend hat der schönheitliche Ausdruck, welchen die Kunst den Werken unserer Zeit geben wird, mit den Anschauungen

BT: Die ersten Vorkämpfer einer modernen Architektur wie Sullivan, Otto Wagner, Berlage, Perret, Peter Behrens, Macintosh, Garnier und andere bereinigten die Maskerade alter Stilformen, die den Bauten unserer Zeit ein lügnerisches Kostüm gab. Allerdings entfernten sie sich noch nicht grundsätzlich von der Tradition und den überlieferten Gesetzen der Proportion. Später aber sah man, daß mit diesen Resten der Tradition immer noch etwas zurückblieb, was wie eine Stimmung aus alten Zeiten war, so daß tatsächlich die teilweise frei sichtbare oder treu befolgte Konstruktion in Widerspruch mit den Architekturelementen geriet.

OW: Mit der Untersuchung dieses Widerspruchs wäre man vielleicht weiter gekommen.

BT: Man verdammte aber die Architektur selbst, und aus der Begeisterung für die Arbeiten der Ingenieure, ihre Bauten und Maschinen, konstruierte man eine Ästhetik der Maschine. (…) Man erklärte die Konstruktion wegen ihrer oft wirklich sehr schönen Leistungen für frei, für absolut frei und erwartete davon das Kommen eines „Stils unserer Zeit“. OW: Es muß daher die Architektur als der mächtigste Ausdruck der Kunst bezeichnet werden. Jede künstlerische Fähigkeit setzt sich aus zwei Eigenschaften des Individuums zusammen: aus dem angeborenen Können (Veranlagung) und aus dem erlernten und erdachten Wissen. (…) Die Hauptursache, warum die Bedeutung des Architekten nicht voll gewürdigt wird, liegt in der von ihm bisher verwendeten Formenwelt, in seiner an die Menge gerichteten Sprache, welche derselben in den meisten Fällen völlig unverständlich blieb. FM: Ohne genius loci, ohne Referenzen, ohne Illusion entwirft der Architekt generische Gebäude, die überall auf dem Planeten positioniert werden können. Im Zentrum des Entwerfens sollte die Formulierung und Artikulierung von Konzepten stehen, die einen noch nicht bekannten Ort definieren. OW: Und nun einige Worte über den Titel „Architekt“. Es ist klar, dass diese Bezeichnung dem Baukünstler allein gebührt, und dass es nicht angeht, Architekten verschiedenen Grades, wie beispielsweise Architekt-Unternehmer, Architekt-Konstrukteur, etc. zu kreieren.

FM: Heutzutage ist der Architekt ein Spezialist geworden, der keinen Platz mehr für Illusion und Phantasie hat. Heute differenziert sich der Beruf des Architekten genau in vier Fachrichtungen, die eine erste Einteilung der Tätigkeit begründen – Architekt (Hochbau), Innenarchitekt, Landschaftsarchitekt und Stadtplaner.

OW: Warum ist der heutige Architekt nicht auch Maler und Bildner wie die Mehrzahl der Künstler vergangener Zeiten? (…) Die modernen sozialen Zustände haben den Typus „Kunsthandwerker“ ganz verschwinden lassen und aus jedem Arbeiter eigentlich eine Maschine gemacht. (…)

So nach zwei Seiten hin mehr denn je in Anspruch genommen, ist der moderne Baukünstler gezwungen, alles Streben und alle Kraft seinem engeren Berufe zu widmen.

JB: Wir sind im Umfeld der Erfindung, des Nicht-Wissens, des Risikos, und dieser Ort kann schließlich zum Ort eines bestimmten Geheimnisses werden, von unbeherrschbaren Dingen, die fatal oder gewollt unkontrolliert sind.

Hier beginnt die offene Illusion, die Illusion eines Raumes, der nicht nur einfach sichtbar ist, sondern die geistige Verlängerung dessen, was man sieht.

FM: Neue Ideen sind immer eine Herausforderung. Mit diesen sind wir „im Umfeld der Erfindung, des Nichts-­Wissens, des Risikos“. Reiches das Lehramt auszuüben, fühle ich die Pflicht, solche Thesen zu fixieren, zu beweisen und zu verteidigen, um dadurch den Lehrzweck zu fördern. Einfach, wie unsere Kleidung, sei der Raum, den wir bewohnen. (…) Unter den textilen Erzeugnissen spielt der Teppich eine Hauptrolle; ihm seien einige Zeilen gewidmet. Der Wandteppich entzieht sich eigentlich der Besprechung, weil er in künstlerischer Beziehung (…) ganz ungebunden ist. (…)

Der Teppich als Bodenbelag hat in erster Linie als Annehmlichkeit und zur Sicherheit von Personen beim Gehen zu dienen. Die Unhörbarkeit der Schritte, die Wärme und Wohnlichkeit, die er dem Raume verleiht, und das Verhindern des Ausgleitens sind die Hauptgründe seiner Anwendung. Künstlerisch ermöglicht der Teppich eine vollkommene Farbstimmung des Raumes.

Völlig verwerflich ist jede unruhige (…) Linienführung oder gar eine, welche Formen bringt, die dem Auge plastisch erscheinen und dadurch Unsicherheit und Unbehagen bei Benützung desselben erzeugen.

Aristide Antonas: Die Frage nach dem „minimalen Wohnen“, wie sie sich heute stellt, ist eng gekoppelt an den Rückzug ins Private, der wiederum für das moderne Leben steht.

Der Rückzug in ein eigenes Zimmer könnte einerseits als gesellschaftliches Zugeständnis, andererseits als ablehnende Haltung gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit gedeutet werden. Er stellt aber weitaus mehr dar, ist zur notwendigen Voraussetzung für jedwede Teilnahme am öffentlichen Leben geworden.

Denn dieser Rückzug bedingt und erzeugt zugleich Öffentlichkeit.

BC, MW: Between the bed inserted in the office and the office inserted in the bed a whole new horizontal architecture has taken over. It is „magnified“ by the „flat“ networks of social media that have themselves been fully integrated into the professional, business, and industrial environment in a collapse of traditional distinction between private and public, work and play, rest and action.

Um hier jedoch die endgültige Form des neuen Bettes benennen zu können, ist ein Blick auf die Mietkultur hilfreich. Unser Verständnis von PE: Colin Rowe first taught me how to see what was not present in a building. Rowe did not want me to describe what I could actually see: for example, a three-story building with a rusticated base, increasingly less rustication in each of its upper stories, and with ABCBA proportional harmonics across the facade, etc. Rather, Rowe wanted me to see what ideas were implied by what was physically present. In other words, less a concern for what the eye sees – the optical – and more for what the mind sees – the visual.

This latter idea of „seeing with the mind“ is called here „close reading.“ (…) Visuality does not refer to a prima facie response to image, but rather to what is apparent and implied by aspects of the building‘s formal organization.

OW: Unsere gegenwärtigen Miethäuser verfolgen, durch die wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse bedingt, keinen anderen Zweck, als durch Anhäufung kleiner, leicht vermietbarer Wohnungen in einem Bauwerke das größte Erträgnis des investierten Baukapitals zu erzielen.

AA: Auch wenn die digitale Infrastruktur hier eine neue Form des sozialen Austausches befördert, indem sie die Konventionen des Tourismussektors auflockert, so finden diese Entwicklungen nicht ungeachtet der sozio-ökonomischen Gegebenheiten unserer Zeit statt. Diesem Wandel, dem sich das Imaginäre des Bettes unterzieht, liegt zum einen die Idee vom befreiten Wohnen zugrunde und die Verlagerung der urbanen Struktur in den Bereichen des Digitalen. Andererseits ist nicht zu verkennen, dass diese Entwicklung auch in unmittelbarer Beziehung zu Strukturen steht, die auf globaler Ebene eine Verschärfung der sozialen Ungleichheit erzeugen.

RK: Die Akropolis zerfällt, der Parthenon stürzt ein: eine Folge ständig steigender Touristenzahlen.

So wie der große Zeh eines Heiligenstandbilds unter dem Kußansturm der Gläubigen nach und nach verschwindet, so verschwindet der große Zeh der Realität langsam, aber unaufhaltsam unter dem unausgesetzten, ständigen Kuß der Menschheit. Je dichter – je metropolitaner – eine Zivilisation ist, um so höher ist die Kußfrequenz: um so schneller erfolgt die Konsumption der Realität von Natur und Artefakten.

Sie werden so schnell aufgebraucht, daß sich der Nachschub erschöpft.

Das ist die Ursache des Wirklichkeitsdefizits. (…) Das Faszinosum des Künstlichen dringt in jeden Winkel; jedes Zimmer ist für seine eigene existentielle Reise gerüstet: das Bauwerk ist zum Laboratorium geworden, zum ultimativen Vehikel emotionaler und intellektueller Abenteuer.

OW: Unser demokratisches Wesen, in welches die Allgemeinheit mit dem Schrei nach billigen und gesunden Wohnungen und mit der erzwungenen Ökonomie der Lebensweise eingepreßt wird, hat die Uniformität unserer Wohnhäuser zur Folge. Deshalb wird auch diese im künftigen Stadtbilde stark zum Ausdrucke kommen. (…) Die Kunst unserer Zeit hat durch breite Straßen diese Uniformität zur Monumentalität erhoben und weiß dieses Motiv durch glückliche Unterbrechungen künstlerisch voll zu verwerten.

Es kann daher kein Zweifel darüber obwalten, daß, wenn die Kunst in solchen Fällen richtig eingreift, nie von einer „Stadtschablone“ die Rede sein kann. Diese entsteht immer nur dann, wenn die Kunst nicht zu Worte kommt. Die zwecklich und ökonomisch bedingte Uniformität der Wohnhäuser hat leider zu einem ganz verwerflichen, gegenseitigen Übertrumpfen im Außendekor dieser Nutzbauten durch zweckwidrige Dinge, wie Risalite, Türme, Giebel, Säulen, Ornamentierung etc. geführt. Es ist gut, daß die moderne, breite Straße, die Wirkung solcher protziger Lächerlichkeiten etwas dämpft.

AA: Das autonome Bett stellt in gleichem Maße einen wundervollen Traum und einen Alptraum dar. OW: Die in dieser Schrift aufgestellten Grundsätze weisen aber darauf hin, daß es der Kunst nicht zukommt, gegen die erwähnten wirtschaftlichen Strömungen anzukämpfen oder sie durch eine Lüge zu bemänteln, sondern daß ihre Aufgabe darin liegt, selbst solchen Anforderungen Rechnung zu tragen. EM: Die planerische Auseinandersetzung von Architekten und Städtebauern mit dem Lebensraum Großstadt wird in Zukunft ein immer wichtigeres Thema werden. Aufgrund von Landmangel wird die Stadterweiterung und die Nachverdichtung immer mehr in den Fokus von Planern rücken. Daher ist es das Ziel dieses Textes den Ansatz einer hybriden Stadt zu erarbeiten, in welcher Stadtplanung nicht mehr nur ein zweidimensionales Zonieren in Lageplänen ist, sondern mehr und mehr zum dreidimensionalen Verweben und Schichten von Funktionen, Infrastrukturen und Nutzungen wird, sowohl auf einer stadtplanerischen Makro-Ebene, als auch in der Mikrostruktur eines städtischen Gefüges.

Um dies auf jeder Ebene zu erreichen, ist es für das Konzept der hybriden Stadt notwendig, dass sowohl gesamte Bezirke, wie auch einzelne Gebäude, aus einem vielfältigen Nutzungsmix zusammengesetzt sind. Tatsächlich wird so das Entstehen einer hybriden Stadt erst möglich.

und daß die bestehenden Kanalisierungssysteme nicht zu alterieren sind.

MK: Flughäfen künftig durch die fünfte Evolution im Verkehr ersetzt werden: durch ein System aus Transportkapseln, die durch luftleere Röhren, schneller als der Schall, und energieeffizient jede Großstadt auf der Erde miteinander verbinden.

Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob in weiterer Folge auch der interplanetare Verkehr mit, aus biochemischen Prozessen recycelten Treibstoff betriebenen, Raketen, mit einbezogen wird.

OW: Desgleichen kann hier nur die Andeutung erfolgen, daß es Aufgabe der Stadtvertretungen sein wird, alle Verkehrsmittel in ihre Hand zu bekommen.

AA: Auch wenn die digitale Infrastruktur hier eine neue Form des sozialen Austausches befördert, indem sie die Konventionen des Tourismussektors auflockert, so finden diese Entwicklungen nicht ungeachtet der sozio-ökonomischen Gegebenheiten unserer Zeit statt.

Diesem Wandel, dem sich das Imaginäre des Bettes unterzieht, liegt zum einen die Idee vom befreiten Wohnen zugrunde und die Verlagerung der urbanen Struktur in den Bereichen des Digitalen. Andererseits ist nicht zu verkennen, dass diese Entwicklung auch in unmittelbarer Beziehung zu Strukturen steht, die auf globaler Ebene eine Verschärfung der sozialen Ungleichheit erzeugen.

OW: Das Gerippe jeder Großstadt bilden die bestehenden Verkehrslinien, Flüße, Seen, Meerbuchten, Terrainverhältnisse, etc. Jede Großstadtregulierung ist (…) nur nach einem System durchzuführen. Dieses System trennt sich naturgemäß in zwei Teile: I. In die Regulierung des alten, also bestehenden Teiles der Stadt und II. In die Regulierung des künftigen Teiles, also der kontinuierlichen Stadterweiterung. (…) Der II. Teil aber ist es, der in ein System gebracht werden kann, ja gebracht werden muß (…).

NM: Ein erster Schritt wird sein die Makro-Erschließung – Individualverkehr sowie Anund Abtransport von Waren und Gütern – in Tunnelsystemen in den Boden zu verlegen. Auf diese Weise werden die großen oberirdischen Verkehrsflächen zu Brachen, was einem extremen Landrückgewinn gleichkommt. Dieses Land kann anschließend für An- und Umbauten des Bestands, sowie Neubauten genutzt werden.

Anstelle von zweidimensional genutzter Fläche entsteht in diesen Bereichen dreidimensional genutzter Raum.

NM: Ebenfalls ist die Baukunst in der Stadt in dieser Zukunftsvision essentiell, ist es doch ihre Aufgabe zu verhindern, dass die hybride Stadt zu einem dichten, überfüllten Ort wird. Vor allem die Dreidimensionalität und das Schichten von Funktionen und Nutzungen, sowie die Erreichbarkeit auf allen Ebenen erfordert eine bedachte Planung.

EM: Bei dichten mehrschichtigen Gefügen stellt sich die Frage, wie darin der Mensch Platz findet und ob diese Struktur eine angemessene Lebensqualität bietet, kommen in der Vorstellung doch oft Bilder von für den Menschen überdimensionierten Megastrukturen oder tiefen dunklen Gebäudeschluchten vor. Die hybride Stadt soll jedoch ein lebenswerter Ort mit idealer infrastruktureller Versorgung und der bestmöglichen Ausnutzung der mehrschichtigen Baustruktur sein. Die Rolle der Architekten in einem solchen System hat folglich eine besondere Wichtigkeit.

Der Wert von architektonischer Raumqualität wird immer relevanter, je verdichteter das Gefüge ist.

Nicht bloß einzelne Gebäude müssen geplant werden, sondern auch die Vernetzung und die Zwischenräume zur Gesamtstruktur.

OW: Mögen die Vertreter der Großstadt sich ganz besonders vor Augen halten, daß eine Großstadt ihren Zweck, der befriedigende Aufenthalt einer Millionenbevölkerung zu sein, nur dann ganz erfüllen kann, wenn die Großstadt auch schön ist, dies aber ist nur zu erreichen durch die Kunst. OW: Die Schrift enthält Vorschläge, zu denen sich der Verfasser MK: Verfasser_innen OW: schon deswegen veranlaßt glaubt MK: glauben, OW: weil alle Ausstellungen, Schriften, Vorträge, MK: Blogbeiträge OW: etc. zu dieser Frage bisher zu keinem greifbaren Resultate führten.

OW: In der vorgeschlagenen Weise fundiert, kann jede Großstadtverwaltung an Dinge denken, welche dem Aufblühen Ihrer Stadt entsprechen und die eilende Kultur gebieterisch erheischt. Die reichlich fließenden Mittel werden die Großstadtvertretungen in den Stand setzen, Volkshäuser, Volkswohnhäuser, Volkssanatorien, Bauwerke für Warenmessen und Musterlager, Wandelbahnen, Monumente, Fontainen, Aussichtstürme, MK: Gemeindezentren, Co-Working Spaces, öffentliche Krankenhäuser, Bauwerke für IT-Messen und Musterlager, Fuß-, Rad- und E-Mopedwege, E-Tankstellen, Plätze, Flusszugänge, Aussichtsplattformen, OW: Museen, Theater, Wasserschlösser, Wahlhallen MK: Virtual Reality Lounges OW: etc. zu errichten, durchwegs Dinge, an welche heute kaum gedacht werden kann, die aber im künftigen Großstadt-bilde MK: Großstadt-netzwerk OW: nicht vermißt werden können.

OW: Mögen die Vertreter der Großstädte sich ganz besonders vor Augen halten, daß eine Großstadt MK: dass das Netz der Großstädte OW: Ihren Zweck, der befriedigende Aufenthalt MK: das Miteinanderleben OW: einer Millionenbevölkerung MK: Milliardenbevölkerung OW: zu sein, nur dann ganz erfüllen kann, wenn die Großstadt auch schön MK: das Netzwerk auch human OW: ist, dies aber ist nur zu erreichen durch die Kunst.

OW: Naturgemäß werden sich die Bezirke um das Stadtzentrum kreisförmig in Zonen lagern (…).

RK: In [Manhattans] Branche der utopischen Immobilien ist Architektur nicht mehr die Kunst, Gebäude zu entwerfen, sondern eher deren rücksichtslose Aufstockung auf praktisch jedem Grundstück, das ein Bauherr zusammenbekommen kann.

EM: Betrachtet man die Funktionsaufteilung der Großstädte dieser Welt, so fällt auf, dass vielerorts eine Gliederung der Bezirke nach Nutzungen vorhanden ist. Diese Aufteilung hat weite Wege und zeitlich eingegrenzten Gebrauch der Stadtteile zur Folge.

OW: Es geht aber nicht an, [zufällig vor Ort gefundene] Dinge zum Fundament der künstlerischen Großstadtausgestaltung zu erheben; wo bliebe dann das zu erhoffende und anzustrebende schönheitliche Stadtbild, wo die durchdachte Lozierung öffentlicher Bauten, wo die Anlage der Luftzentren, der Veduten, wo die besten Verkehrswege, wo die zwecklich und ökonomisch richtigen geraden Linien für die entstehenden Bauplätze, wo endlich der für jede Großstadt anzustrebende Zwang der Orientierung. Es ist hieraus zu ersehen, dass die Ausgestaltung der Großstadt nicht Zufällen anheim gegeben werden darf, sondern wohlerwogene Bestimmungen ihre Grundlage bilden müssen.

OW: Ist die Bestimmung nach Berufen (…), Wohnweise, (…) etc. der einzelnen Bezirke ziemlich naheliegend, so geht es doch nicht an, Bezirke ganz für einen besonderen Zweck zu schaffen, da Arbeiter, Bedienstete höheren und niedereren Ranges, Beamte, etc. ihren Aufenthalt in bestimmten Bezirken nehmen wollen und nehmen müssen; gewisse Dinge aber, wie Parks, Gärten, Kinderspielplätze, Schulen (…) [müssen] allen Bezirken mehr oder weniger zukommen.

RK: Das [Manhattan] Raster ist zuallererst eine konzeptuelle Spekulation.

Trotz seiner scheinbaren Neutralität impliziert es ein intellektuelles Programm für die Insel: Indifferent gegenüber der Topographie, gegenüber dem Bestehenden, behauptet es die Überlegenheit geistiger Konstrukte über die Wirklichkeit.

Die Anlage seiner Straßen und Blocks offenbart sein eigentliches Ziel: die Unterwerfung, wenn nicht gar Aufhebung der Natur.

Alle Blocks sind identisch; ihre Gleichwertigkeit entkräftet auf einen Schlag sämtliche Gliederungs- und Differenzierungssysteme, wie sie für die Anlage herkömmlicher Städte maßgeblich gewesen sind. Das Raster macht die Architekturgeschichte und alle früheren Lektionen des Urbanismus gegenstandslos. Es zwingt die Erbauer Manhattans, ein neues System formaler Werte zu entwickeln und Strategien zu ersinnen, mit denen ein Block vom anderen unterschieden werden kann. Darüber hinaus eröffnet die zweidimensionale Disziplin des Rasters nie erträumte Freiheiten dreidimensionaler Anarchie. (…)

In urbanistischer Hinsicht bedeutet diese Unbestimmtheit, daß ein gegebenes Grundstück nicht mehr einem einzelnen, vorher festgelegten Zweck gewidmet werden kann. Von nun an beherbergt jedes metropolitane Grundstück – zumindest theoretisch – eine unvorhersehbare und instabile Kombination simultaner Aktivitäten; Architektur wird dadurch in einem geringeren Ausmaß als früher zu einem Akt der Voraussicht, und Planung zu einem Akt von nur noch begrenzter Vorhersagekraft. Es ist unmöglich geworden, Kultur zu „planen“.

OW: [Es] ist an einen Schnellverkehr in dem Sinne zu denken, dass ein konstanter Zonenverkehr (…) stattfindet, also jeder beliebige Punkt mit einmaligem Umsteigen erreicht werden kann. Die Möglichkeit des Umsteigens in Hoch-, Straßenund Tiefbahnen vermitteln Aufzüge.

EM: Gewisse Nutzungen sollen nicht in einem Bezirk gebündelt, sondern in jedem Teil der Stadt vorhanden sein. Das Aufteilen in lauter identische Viertel, welche alle Funktionen in jeweils identer Anordnung beinhalten, sind jedoch nicht die Zukunft. Stattdessen müssen, um eine hohe Lebensqualität zu sichern, diese Funktionseinheiten verteilt über die dreidimensionale Stadtstruktur in definierten Kugelradien vorkommen, gestaffelt nach Bedarf der jeweiligen Funktion.

Diese müssen in Regelwerken, welche klassische Bebauungspläne ersetzen, festgehalten werden.

Mit jedem neuen Bauwerk plant man somit ein weiteres Puzzleteil in ein bereits bestehendes dreidimensionales Gefüge.

OW: Da (…) die einzelnen Bezirke nach einem wohl erwogenen Plan in genau vorher bestimmten Intervallen entstehen (…), erscheint es richtiger, jedem einzelnen Bezirk seine genügenden Luftzentren in Gestalt von Parks, Gärten und Spielplätzen zu geben, als die Annahme eines Wald- und Wiesengürtels zu projektieren, ist doch die Anlage eines um die Stadt sich ziehenden Gürtels wieder nur eine festgestellte Einschließung, die sicher zu vermeiden ist.

OW: Die so beliebten Schlagworte von Heimatkunst, Einfügen in das Stadtbild, Gemüt im Stadtbilde MK: Begegnungszone, Smart Living, Urban Gardening OW: etc. in dem Sinne, wie sie von Personen ausgesprochen werden, welche die Kunst nur aus Lehrbüchern MK: YouTube-Tutorials OW: kennen und beurteilen, sind nichts als Phrasen, an die sich diese Personen MK: meist in Form von belanglosen #hashtags OW: klammern, weil sie der Großstadtbaufrage ratlos gegenüber stehen. Nur der wirkliche Baukünstler weiß MK: die wirklichen Raumkünstler_innen OW: wissen zwischen Schön und Alt und nur Alt MK: Neu und nur Neu OW: zu unterscheiden und abzuwägen und denkt weder an die frevelhafte Zerstörung des Schönen, noch an ein Kopieren des Bestehenden, auch nicht an den leider so beliebten „Aufputz“ MK: beliebte Privatisierung OW: einer Stadt; ihm ist jede baukünstlerische Zuchtlosigkeit MK: Korruption OW: fremd.

OW: Die Zahl der Wohnhäuser MK: hybriden Gebäudeformen OW: wird in jeder Großstadt die Anzahl der öffentlichen MK: rein privater oder rein öffentlicher OW: Bauten weit überwiegen; aus Ihrer Zusammenlagerung entstehen daher lange und gleiche Straßeneinfassungsflächen MK: lebendige, heterogene Raumstrukturierungen, da Straßen nicht mehr in erster Linie für Automobilverkehr genutzt werden.

RK: [Der] Entwurf [des Manhattan-Rasters ist] die kühnste Prophezeiung in der Geschichte der westlichen Zivilisation: die parzellierten Grundstücke sind leer, die beschriebenen Einwohner hypothetisch, die lokalisierten Gebäude imaginär, die umrissenen Aktivitäten nicht existent. (…) Architektur = der Welt Bauwerke aufoktroyieren, um die sie nie gebeten hat und die vorher bloß als vage Gedankengebilde in den Köpfen ihrer Schöpfer existiert haben. Architektur ist zwangsläufig eine Form von paranisch-kritischer Aktivität. Die Überführung des Spekulativen in das unleugbare, konkrete ‚Da’ ist für die moderne Architektur etwas Traumatisches. Wie ein einsamer Schauspieler, der ein völlig anderes Stück aufführt als die übrigen Schauspieler, die mit ihm auf der Bühne stehen, will die moderne Architektur etwas aufführen, ohne ein Teil der geplanten Inszenierung zu sein: Selbst bei ihren aggressivsten Realisierungskampagnen beharrt sie auf ihrer Überweltlichkeit.

Für dieses subversive Spiel im Spiel hat sie sich eine rhetorische Rechtfertigung zurechtgelegt, deren Vorbild Noahs paranoisch-kritische Episode der Bibel ist. Die moderne Architektur wird immer präsentiert als eine in letzter Minute auftauchende Rettungsmöglichkeit, als nachdrückliche Aufforderung, sich die paranoische These zu eigen zu machen, wonach eine Katastrophe jenen unvernünftigen Teil der Menschheit vernichten werde, der sich an alte Formen des Wohnens und des städtischen Zusammenlebens klammert.

OW: Ein Einfluß der Kunst auf das Werden der Großstadt, also auf deren künftige Gestaltung ist heute nahezu ausgeschlossen. Nicht der Zwang der Ökonomie bildet hiebei den Hauptgrund dieser Tatsache, er liegt vielmehr in der völligen Gleichgültigkeit der Allgemeinheit für künstlerisches Schaffen, also im Mangel des

OW: Es besteht wohl kein Zweifel darüber, daß die Mehrzahl der Menschen lieber in einer Großstadt wohnt, als in einer kleinen Stadt, oder auf dem Lande.

NM: Die westlichen Großstädte dieser Welt entwickeln sich seit Jahrzehnten immer weiter zu den Orten, in denen der Großteil der Weltbevölkerung wohnt. In den 1950er Jahren lebten 29 Prozent der Menschen in Städten, heute sind es bereits über 50 Prozent und Prognosen sagen voraus, dass bis 2050 sogar rund 70 Prozent der Menschheit Stadtbewohner sein werden.

OW: (…) die Stadtverwaltungen [sind] also geradezu gezwungen, Vorsorge in dem Sinne zu treffen, daß Wohnhäuser, öffentliche Bauten, Verkehrswege, sanitäre Einrichtungen etc. heute schon richtig loziert werden, würde doch sonst,

NM: Grünräume im drei dimensionalen städtische Gefüge gehören zum Stadtraum und bieten die Möglichkeit der lebendigen, hybriden Struktur regelmäßig zu entfliehen. Sie verbessern die Luftqualität und das Mikroklima. Ein weiterer Gegenpol zum dichten Stadtgefüge stellt der Naturraum rund um die Stadt dar.

OW: Die Ausdehnung einer Großstadt muß unserem heutigen Empfinden nach eine unbegrenzte sein.

NM: Die hybride Stadt kann im Sinne der Lebensqualität der Menschen in ihrer Ausdehnung kein infinites System sein. Eine solch dichte Struktur braucht einen Freiraum rundum. Das heißt, dass das System zu jedem Zeitpunkt eine definierte Grenze haben muss, welche sich jedoch über die Zeit verändern kann. Am Anfang des Stadtentwicklungsprozesses, wird sich der Stadtrand nicht transformieren, da der bereits beschriebene Landrückgewinn für Jahrzehnte Bauland und Lebensraum zum Nachverdichten für eine wachsende Stadt bieten kann. Die hybride Stadt ist somit finit aber im Wandel der Zeit weder begrenzt noch definiert abgeschlossen.

EM: Eine optimale Verknüpfung der Stadtschichten mit der unterirdischen Verkehrsebene, sowie einem U-Bahnnetz ist maßgebend für eine funktionierende Infrastruktur. Oberirdisch findet man als Verkehrsverbindungen hauptsächlich Wege für Fußgänger, Radfahrer und künftige Kleinstverkehrsmittel sowie öffentliche Lokalbahnen und Liftanlagen, welche auf mehreren Ebenen die Struktur engmaschig miteinander verweben.

members of this idiosyncratic patchwork entity subsumed in a greater whole (an organism, Mother Earth, etc.). Lichens were probably the stuff the Israelites ate when they wandered in the desert for 40 years. It was called manna or bread from heaven, for like a gift from God, it could be found each day anew on the ground. The English word lichen is derived from a Greek word that means both “tree moss” and “licking”. More than just flirting with sexual politics, this is an attempt to politicize the concepts we use to think other concepts by engaging all senses. So what would result, asks Donna Haraway – and with her, an entire tradition of science critics and philosophers – if we understood the production of knowledge not as cracking and exploring bodies, or as shining a light into the darkness, but instead as tasting and touching, like octopus and jellyfish tentacles do, or a constantly vibrating spider’s prosthesis-like net of slimy, sticky threads?

HEIRS OF VITRUVIUS: ­LICHENS, LAPDOGS & ­CYBORG COWS

Not only religions are made, but trouble, too, says Donna Haraway.3 As a committed compostist of intellectual estates, and a queer-leaning heir of historical materialism, feminist standpoint theory, indigenous multiverses and disarmament campaigns, this biologist and science philosopher does not gaze upwards, to a god in the sky and his ostensible “gaze from nowhere”.4 Haraway pokes her nose into the hind gut of a South Australian termite, where she goes looking for the contours of non-innocent coexistence.5 Her readings lead to the idiolectal pamphlets of female former slaves such as Sojourner Truth, who had not mastered the sovereign language of power, but did not let that stop them from making trouble.6 No solitary sun shines down to bathe the world in the searchlight of a schoolmasterly god, or colonial enlightener; instead, in Haraway’s world, the bioluminescent bodies of marine creatures become disco balls for the cruel and kind party called evolution.

And there is blood on this dance floor.

TASTING, TOUCHING, THINKING Donna Haraway is concerned with making wild kin, instead of remaining caught up in the subdivisions of taxonomic regulation and heteronormative reproduction. That is why she calls to us: We are all lichens!

Lichens are symbiotic communities of a fungus (or several fungi) and an alga (or several algae) practicing photosynthesis.

This life form, collectively called lichen, exhibits traits that none of its component parts possesses by itself. However, nor are the

HUMANITY, A MUST? The interlacings formed by these non-plants are not the well-ordered lines of the Vitruvian Man, which posited man as the measure of all things in a reinterpretation of classical Antiquity, and became an emblematic image in Leonardo da Vinci’s depiction of well-formed proportionality and perfection (and the possibility to achieve perfection). A belief in the unique, self-regulating and intrinsic moral force of human reason is part of the humanistic legacy linked to this figure. The Vitruvian Man was interrogated in various ways in the course of the lecture series WHAT BEINGS ARE WE? As the heraldic animal of the sort of humanism that combined biological, moral and discursive notions of seemingly genuinely human abilities to form the idea of rational progress, it has in fact become questionable.7 Historically, humanism – as criticized by Haraway (and many others) – developed to become a civilizational model. The vision associated with this model implied Europe as more than an arbitrary, geopolitical space, instead framing European civilization as a universal attribute of the human intellect, capable of lending a special quality to any object, any place. This form of humanism accompanied almost all colonial enterprises as the image of the ideal and destiny of civilization. The humanistic idea of Europe as the point of origin of critical reasoning and self-reflection can also be clearly heard in contemporary attempts to rhetorically defend Europe against the threat of fascism. It goes beyond a more or less problematic attitude that might be corrected with some good will: Eurocentric humanism is a structural element of our cultural practice, embedded in institutional and educational practices that produce reality.

MEDUSA OR TESLA In Fabrizio Terranova’s film, Haraway discusses two National Geographic cover photos. In both cases, the model gracing the cover is Koko, the famous lowland gorilla (who knew 1000 hand signs of sign language and recognized 2000 words of spoken English). On one cover, she is pictured with her pet cat, and on the other, she is holding a Japanese camera and taking a picture of her reflection in the mirror. Koko is framed as almost human – she has another animal as a companion and pet, and she has control of her own image, she recognizes herself in the mirror – thus becoming a proxy for universal humanity.

The many jellyfish and octopus tentacles that wobble across the screen in Terranova’s film can be interpreted as an ironic nod to Medusa, the mortal goddess at whose mere sight bio-men instantly turned to stone, who died when she saw herself in a mirror. Instead of the omniscient, distant gaze of Enlightenment and the pitfalls of the male gaze, Haraway advocates a politics of touching and being touched. However, this enterprise is anything but free of danger – as anyone who has ever touched a tentacle or been touched by one can testify.

Haraway’s insistence on jellyfish and octopuses, dogs and cyborgs emphatically underlines that nobody can exist everywhere.

It is the opposite of the image of universal man in a spacesuit, soon on his way to Mars, powered by Tesla batteries, capable of founding a colony anywhere. No – there are certain places and habitats that can enable and sustain certain forms of life. That is why the film repeatedly poses the question of how the habitat that

produced the Haraway animal is constituted, and how that animal acted in the habitat, forming and changing it.

LACKING A SPINE, YET ON AN EVEN COURSE Haraway’s animals are cyborgs, and thus politically non-innocent, hybrid beings of different worlds, or vectors of post-humanistic relationality. In this context, Haraway seeks to keep materiality and relationality at the same level and the same volume. No one is connected to everyone, but everyone is connected to someone or something.

In Haraway’s interpretation, the human figure – like all other biological and inorganic entities – is a figure in a game of cat’s cradle, the children’s game played with a continuous string where you produce different, new figures depending on how you move your hands (a game that served as a knowledge archive and accounting tool in older cultures). The OncoMouse, the first living organism to be patented, but also regular lapdogs are figures that connect us to one another and to other worlds. What Haraway attempts to do is to sketch experimental futures. She is concerned with tentacular thinking, with the octopus and the spider: touching and sticking, coming loose and entangling, lacking a spine yet charting an even course – a course that enables continued existence, instead of lines that begin in the emptiness of self-exegesis and end in the nothingness of outer space.

ARCHITECTS ON THE BRINK The more we focus the optical apparatus of insight on politics, the more we blur all other distinctions of modernism.

Haraway’s When Species Meet (2008) includes a drawing of a cartoon dog in the place of Vitruvius. Can a dog be the representation of, if not everyone, at least of some? Her book Staying with the Trouble (2016) includes a drawing that shows an ancient species of orchid with blossoms formed in such a way as to attract a specific species of wasp. The wasp has since become extinct, while the orchid persists as a sort of botanical negative image of the disappeared body of the wasp. Perhaps the Vitruvian Man is similar to the orchid’s blossom, conserving as an image something that has long since ceased to exist.

And just when the tides of history seemed ready to wash humanity clean, the universal body as a model is uncertain like never before.

Architects are standing on the brink of the future, in the midst of a rampant crowd of cyborg bodies, holocaust bodies, prosthetic bodies, animal bodies, pornographic and mutated bodies, disabled, migrated and colonized bodies. However, instead of making reactionary reference to the dubious idyll of an imaginary pre-modernist era (as is the case with the line “when tomatoes still tasted like tomatoes”), Donna Haraway’s ideas enable us to grasp dairy cows, with their feeding, monitoring and milking machinery, as proletarian cyborgs. There is a cow with a gun. To liberate us all.
