Inhabited Landscape
Working together closely in the studio creates an exploratory atmosphere. Short workshop-oriented exercises develop into first design projects. The students discover their personalities as architects and how to express them in their work. Based on examples such as a particular landscape, like Lake Neusiedl in the province of Burgenland, field trips are made to facilitate a direct encounter with and fresh experience of the landscape. In the studio, we abstract a piece of the world into drawings and models, synthesizing research and production.

Deep Space
Analogue Digital Production now shakes off words: theory is lost, a nocturnal, technical field of dark figures and unreflecting production — reflexes, yes, but no reflection; not attempts, but a series of temptations; not tens or thousands of experiments, no — each approach is immediate and real. More and more hybrid creatures, people turned upside down, buildings suspended, foundations taking flight — strings and bars, ropes and knots; strains, weights and balances; material gradients, temperature zones, air streams; beams of light, traps of time, lines of shadow . . .

Part of our investigation in Construction Material Technology deals with woven architecture, following Gottfried Semper, who posited that the woven mat constitutes where architecture begins – seemingly antiquated considering how we currently build, but suddenly incredibly modern with the development of the new technologies of woven reinforcement and ultra-high performance concrete. Using full-scale prototypes, we explore how the design and the transformation of materials influence the form and gestalt of our constructed environment.

We no longer design individual buildings. We design processes and structures that actively shape the construction of the Earth’s crust. We ask about the function of architecture within and beyond our societies. We study relational spaces, we design sites in the form of topographical, architectural and urban structures, and we construct their poetic condition. Critical environments and the shaking worlds of facts and fictions are our fields of operation.

The future of our society essentially depends on how intelligently we meet the environmental challenges of a given time. Geography Landscapes Cities investigates the topic of the environment in two different ways: firstly we explore the landscape as a model for architectural education – secondly we are concerned with processes that describe the special configuration of Critical Environments. In this, the principles of the landscape provide a model of a three-dimensional network structure that can cultivate diversity, support symbiotic processes and transform these sites of our society into creative terminals that have a future.
