amily of Mlungisi Cwayi, one of the victims of the infamous crash involving well known artist Molemo Jub-Jub Maarohanye and Themba Thsabalala said it wishes the two to get life sentences as they “are not people to live with other people”. Speaking to Ikamva LaseGcuwa, Fezekile Cwayi, father to Mlungisi said that it has not been easy especially for his wife since Mlungisi was killed in that accident and buried at his home at Mgcwe village, Ngamakwe on March 21. “It hasn’t been easy for the whole family but my wife couldn’t cope at all, she is only getting better this year,” he said. He said that he coped by accepting the death of his son and that there was nothing he could do as okwenzekileyo kufana nokudaliweyo (what is done is the same as what was created). Molemo Jub-Jub Maarohanye and

Themba Tshabalala were found guilty on four charges of murder and two of attempted murder by Magistrate Brian Nemavhidi at the Protea Magistrates Court in Soweto on October 16. The magistrate also convicted the pair for racing on a public road and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Cwayi said the he is happy with the verdict. “I hope this verdict and the coming sentencing will bring about peace to our kids who are no more,” said Fezekile. He also hoped for the two to be sentenced to life imprisonment. “They did not show any remorse because even after they were given bail they did not come to us. They did not show any sign of regret of the incident,” said Cwele. He said that kind of behaviour meant that Maarohanye and Tshabalala cannot live with other people. The sentencing of the two is expected to take place on November 30.

Commentary

Fingoland Mall opened An address by business mogul, Dr Archie Nkonyeni, during the official opening of Butterworth’s Fingoland Mall on October 24.

M

aster of ceremonies, your majesty king Zwelonke Aah Zwelonke, in absentia! guests, Ladies and gentlemen. Because of the large number of people who have encouraged and assisted in getting this project off the ground please allow me, in recognising them, to corrupt the words of an eminent British statesman and say: Never in the history of our endeavours in these territories, have we seen the individual efforts of so many, blending so seamlessly in creating for the benefit of all, monument as majestic as what we are poised to poised to launch today. Your majesty, the nation’s business community has taken note of your passion for development. Mntwan’omhle, we are more than encouraged by the unswerving support which you have shown for all development projects, including this one. It is only when we get talking about the outcomes expected from this development that it will become obvious why I make bold to say that any king who distances himself from the development runs the risk of ruling over a disadvantaged, disgruntled and dysfunctional nation. A people brought up in the shadows of royalty and chieftainship will take their lead from their rulers. Some of us will remember the days when councillors accompanying their ruler on horseback would deliberately fall off their horses in sympathy with the ruler who may have been toppled off his horse by accident. The development- oriented feature of your reign is a pointer to a feature bedecked with prosperity and loyalty for this region. We cannot fail to commend it to all our traditional leaders. Your majesty, it is not

us that, despite a family bereavement you’ve found time to share a moment with us. We convey our condolences to you and your family. Through your intercession with the Almighty even sinners such as I are able to partake of the grace of the Lord. I’m sure your prayers have played no insignificant part to protect this development from possible natural and social disasters that could have befallen as it was rising. Here I have in the mind all levels of political activity from the president to the mayor of the lowliest municipality. Whenever I grapple with the concept of government providing an environment that will enable private sector – initiated economic activity, I’m always made to think of our politicians as being in the same mode as “injoli zakwaNtu” – the men who will quietly dish out for all and stand back until everybody has had their fill. Thus oiling the wheels of commerce and industry to continue turning! I would be less than honest of I were to paint them as always upright in their dealings but I recognise that if and when their role is played properly , as was the case here, development and growth become unstoppable. It is this kind of selflessness on the part of those who control the nation’s purse strings, which drives an economy such as ours. And projects such as Fingolalnd Mall will continue to sprout as long as that selflessness reigns supreme. Without it, the economy will stagnate and the nation will flounder in corruption. This country is full of aspiring businesspeople with ideas. It is important that they should always feel free to approach government at all times to seek the creation of environment that will be condu-

LETTERS Congratulations to the 2012 paralympians

I would like to say congratulations to the 2012 Paralympians for their excellent performance at the London Paralympics 2012. I must say that at the beginning I was a bit frustrated by the reward for medals received for each team. As we can remember the paralympians were promised less than the Olympians. But I was delighted when things were corrected and that they will get the same as others. I say this because I am a person living with disability myself and have been involved in sports for a long time. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to that level. I just hope that more young talent could come up especially from rural areas for future games and heroes. -S. Mbilane, Butterworth

cive to the prosperity of the projects they envisage. Allowing and creating space for the economic wealth on the economic stage is the only mandate of our politicians in the area of economic growth. Ladies and gentlemen I know you are referred by different names at different times. It may be “The community”, “The masses”, “The people”, “Society”, “The customers” or even “The rank and file”. Whatever you are called, all I know is that nothing will ever succeed without your blessing. I will not be tempted to steal the thunder of he who will move the vote of thanks but please do know that we acknowledge that the community is key to this development. In South Africa that came into being in 1994 there have been many black entrepreneurs who, without means, were raring to go deeper into all areas of economic development in order to widen the space for their job creation activities for the benefit of others. Yes, time was when, because of lack of collateral for funding they needed, they were rendered unable to undertake such investments. But in recent years this disadvantage has persisted as result of lack of a track record that would enthuse the trust or confidence of lenders. By agreeing to fund this project you have taken the ground breaking step which, when followed by others, as it will, must take us, as a country in transformation, to a point where we can begin to expect that the end of our economic disparities is no longer out of sight. Indeed you’ve crossed that divide and reached out in a manner that holds out hope for a true restructuring of the manner in which the nation’s wealth is held. Dr Nkonyeni is former Nafcoc president

On Mnquma Municipality squabbles

When will those people deliver on what they promised poor communities? I am sick and tired of that Municipality. Look at Villages like Hlobo nothing has been done in terms of infrastructure. People from those villages lack basic things like electricity, road and many more. It’s time to change the management of the whole Municipality. -Phumlani Ntloko, Ngqamakwe

ith matric examinations having started, it is very interesting to see a feeling of confidence around the exams by learners, teachers and the department of basic education. The Eastern Cape known to produce the lowest percentage over the years with a few and far in-between black schools challenging former model C schools or private schools. Question, Can we reach 78% as the department says? Or does it depend on the hands of the learners to do their best looking at the circumstances they learn under, strikes by teachers, inadequate classes, non employment of teachers, lack of text books, on and off school transport and collapsing school nutrition. Is 78% pass pass rate realistic? Really can the province achieve this or is it farfetched? The guilty verdict by Protea magistrate court on the Jub Jub Marohanye and Themba Tshabalala of the infamous drag racing accident that killed learners from Jool’s High School in 2010 leaving one Mlungisi Cwayi from Ngqamakhwe dead others seriously injured. We hope this will be the final chapter in what one would call an unending traumatic opera where families, friends had just nearly gave up. The on-going chaotic saga in the local municipality of Mbashe leaves a lot of questions than answers, where a mayor is booted out and then another group of councillors contest the decision though from the same majority party. How can we put trust in people who are seemingly self serving, above those of the people that voted them? Until when can are we as communities going continue to accept this status quo? Does the vote count or is it null and void once council is appointed? On a lighter note Butterworth was abuzz on the 24th October with the long awaited Fingoland shopping mall at Mthatha Street with the number of shops we say big up for this development. DOCTOR’S COLUMN If you have any medical questions you would like us to address in the next issue please write to: Dr Natalia Novikova, 58 Deveraux Ave, Vincent, 5200 East London Or sms 0796807821 or e-mail: novikovanatalia@gmail.com

Talking to Kids About Sex I have been asked to talk to kids about sex at one of East London high schools. It’s a difficult topic, but it seem to be a very important one because the adults are trying to do all the can to stop kids having sex and the kids seem to want to have sex though they do not understand what it involves and what implications it will have on their lives and lives of close people to them. Kids obviously think that they know better… So what do kids need to know about sex? First of all, it is actually illegal to have sex if you are younger than 16. It is against law. If you are younger than 12 years you cannot consent to having sex in South Africa. Even if you say yes, you are too young to say yes and the person who is having sex with 12 year old or younger will be considered raping them and will be prosecuted. What our law says is that anyone older who has consensual sex, or commits sexual acts, with someone between the ages of 12 and 16 years is committing a rape or sexual assault. It is more complicated when two people having sex are between 12 and 16 years of age. Technically they can both be charged with statutory rape or assault, even if they have both consented to sex or the sexual acts (including kissing as defined under our law). If they are convicted of this crime, then they will never ever be able to work in a position that allows them contact with children. Police is too busy with more important issues so they unlikely to be chasing kids for having sex. However, this is information that the children should know. As medical practitioners we are supposed to report a statutory rape to police when a girl younger then 16 years is giving birth to a baby as she is not supposed to be having sex.

Sex is not the only of showing your affection for someone. It is more important to develop good relationships, show your love, care and respect for one another. You can be intimate in other ways but sex. Your body has to be ready to have sex and you need to mature emotionally as well. You should only do what you are comfortable with and never do things because you are pressured into them. You will earn more respect for saying “no”. Vast of majority of adults wish they have delayed their first sexual encounter to later so do not hurry into it. Why are we so worried about kids having sex? Having sex can lead to a number of issues - Sexually transmitted infections which cause sickness, pain, as well as long-term issues especially for women such as infertility or inability to fall pregnant in the future. There are many sexually transmitted infections that go around such as syphilis, Chlamydia, gonorrhoae… - HIV / AIDS is one of the sexually transmitted infections which is common in South Africa. One in three women having babies at Frere hospital have HIV, one in 20 babies born to those mothers acquire HIV infection. Those women are usually very young. About 20% of women having babies at Frere are younger than 18 years

old. - Pregnancy is another issue. Being pregnant during teenage years has many risks for general health. Childbirth is more complicated in teenagers. Looking after the baby is a huge task. So babies are not just cute creatures, they are very hard work and costs lots of many (for nappies and food, and clothes and many many other things and it is so much more than the grant can cover). One of the worst things I see at work is a sixteen-year old girls being brought to the hospi-

tal heavily pregnant with severe complications of pregnancy or advanced AIDS infection. They die sometimes leaving the baby to live. It is very sad to watch this happening all the time. And if these girls didn’t have sex in the first place they would still go on with their lives. What should kids know if they are having sex? If for whatever reason you have unprotected sex (meaning not using condom) you can take a pill (“morning after pill”) sold at the pharmacy without a script to prevent a pregnancy. It

is not 100% , you might still get pregnant despite of taking pill, but it does prevent about 97% of pregnancies if taken within 72 hours after sex. CONDOMS are very important of prevent infections, but the chance of pregnancy are pretty high so you are better using another form of contraception (I recommend injections or loop) in addition to condoms. If you need any advise on this please come to womens’ health clinic at Frere Maternity and you will be assisted. If you had unprotected sex (without condom) and you are worried about getting HIV you can take antiviral medications to avoid HIV. You can get the medications from the clinic. Such measures can only be used in extreme circumstances and it is certainly not a substitute to condoms. In conclusion, for the kids - you will be having great sex for the rest of your life. So why rush into it now when your bodies have not fully and your relationships have not fully developed. Make sure your relationship is right. There are other ways of being close to a person you fancy. Take your time. More you delay more you will get out of it. Just make sure you understand what sex is about and get clued-up on safe sex and contraception before you do anything.

Focus on diabetes Dutywa-based medical doctor Dr Pumla Sangqu recently organised a Diabetes Community Awareness Day on October 06. The awareness was accompanied by a 5km fun walk which involved hundreds of elders in the area. First Lady Bongi NgemaZuma, who came on behalf of Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation, also participated during the walk. Sithandiwe Velaphi asked Dr Sangqu on reasons behind the initiative. 1. What was the idea behind the awareness initiative? The idea came after I lost my own mother who died because of the diabetes. Also, this year, I am celebrating ten years since establishing my surgery here in Dutywa. I believe in primary health care. I know resources to manage diabetes are a huge challenge and the levels of awareness in our rural areas are of lowest. It is also the appreciation that we need a paradigm shift from a patient centred approach to an interdisciplinary community approach. 2. What were you hoping to achieve after the awareness? My key objectives revolved around Diabetes Awareness, Community Service and Healthy Lifestyle

Promotion and that went successful. We had a huge turnout and more elders came for diabetes screening. I was so happy with that. 3. How huge is diabetes in our life? Diabetes was once considered rare in sub-Saharan Africa. However currently more and more people in the region have the disease and more will die from diabetes-related complications due to low levels of awareness, late diagnosis and lack of access to appropriate healthcare. 30-85% of diabetes sufferers especially in rural areas remain undiagnosed. The rising prevalation of urbanisation and associated lifestyle changes is a recurring consideration in primary healthcare. Over the next 20 years, the social and economic challenge posed by diabetes will magnify in South Africa and is projected to grow at

an even higher rate. 4. What is your relationship with Dutywa community? I have a good relationship which I have maintained in the last ten years of my work as medical doctor. Our area is rural based and therefore needs a primary healthcare focus, of which I have been practising. 5. What is your message to people out there? My message is that diabetes is manageable disease if one is diagnosed. Also an early detection is the key. Live a healthier lifestyle and make sure to exercise regularly and thereafter you will live longer. Collaborating partnerships need to be encouraged that is private and public working effectively together in all levels of service delivery

Who runs Mbhashe municipality? Sithandiwe Velaphi

It is still unclear who is the mayor of one of the Eastern Cape’s poorest and struggling municipal councils, Mbhashe Local Municipality, following clashes between ANC councillors in the past few days. The municipality now has two mayors fighting for one position. The one is Olga Mfecane who was deployed by the ANC following the victory of the party in the area during 2011 local government elections. The other is Mthetheli Bhele who was elected by the council on October 05. Bhele, an ANC member, was elected after a vote of no confidence was imposed on Mfecane by some ANC members. This is after some members of the council accused Mfecane of “corruption and incompetence.” Now the two mayors are competing for the space of the office of one top job positions in the municipality, that of the mayor. Mfecane said she is not involved in any fight. She said she is the mayor of the municipality. “I am currently on sick leave and will be back next week at my job,” Mfecane recently said. Mfecane said allegations of corruption and fraud labelled against her, are unfounded and baseless. “If you say I am guilty of corruption, why cannot you provide proof of that,” she said. An ANC councillor, Mzimasi Jiya, who is part of the group that ousted Mfecane said: “Mfecane is mistaken if she says she is still the mayor. She is not because we booted her out of the council.” One source in the municipality told

Ikamva LaseGcuwa that tensions are the order of the day in Mbhashe, a municipality which was declared one of the poorest by Statistics South Africa. Congress of the People councillor in Mbhashe, Nkosinathi Ndlodaka said: “The Congress of the people has long been saying that the ANC has made the worst deployment ever in this current crew of so called leaders.” “We call on them (ANC) to immediately put their house in order for the

sake of the people of Mbhashe and the services they expect from their elected representatives,” added Ndlodaka. In the wake of the tensions in Mbhashe the ANC in the province has suspended eight of its councillors in the municipality. The suspended councillors include Speaker Phakamisa Madingana and Mbhele. ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said: “All those who unorganisationally, removed the mayor

(Mfecane) and reshuffled the executive committed a breach of organisational decisions and violated ANC policies and rules. Consequences of such actions would be disciplinary actions against those committed these actions.” “Any person who carried themselves in a way akin to military junta by dethroning our mayor and her Executive, must quit now. We will never tolerate junta like conduct in our ANC,” Mabuyane said.

Biography of Abraham Onkgopotse Tiro

H

Born: 1947, Dinokana, a small village near Zeerust, South Africa. (One source suggests he was born in 1950. But it seems that the correct date is 1947). An activist, teacher, one of the founders of the South African Students Organisation (SASO) killed by a parcel bomb on the 1st February 1974.

e attended primary school at Dinokana and Motswedi, and matriculated at Barolong High School in Mafikeng. Tiro had two brothers and one sister. His mother was a domestic at Emmarentia in Johannesburg. Little is known about his father and it appears his mother had a profound influence on his upbringing. After completing grade 12 (Standard 10 in those days), he enrolled at the University of the North for a degree in Humanities. He was elected president of the Student Representative Council (SRC) in his final year. At the university’s graduation ceremony in 1972, Tiro delivered a speech that sharply criticised the Bantu Education Act of 1953. This later became known as the “Turfloop Testimony”. Authorities at the university were angered by Tiro’s outspokenness and the speech precipitated his expulsion. Despite demonstrations by students under the new SRC, Tiro was not readmitted. Tiro’s expulsion from Turfloop had far-reaching consequences that the university’s management could not have anticipated. In May 1972 there were a number of strikes on black campuses across the country in support of Tiro. By the beginning of June all major black campuses endorsed a solidarity strike in his support. On 2 June 1972 students at the University of Cape Town (UCT) demonstrated in support of Tiro. In 1973, Tiro became involved in the activities of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM); a movement set up and developed primarily by Black students after 1968 to encourage Black people to liberate themselves psychologically from the effects of institutionalised racism and white liberalism. It is not clear what Tiro’s involvement in the formation of the South African Students Organisation (SASO) was in 1969. In fact, evidence suggests that the initiative for the formation of SASO came from Natal University’s Black Campus, where Steve Biko was clearly in the forefront. However, it is at Turfloop that the first major outbreak of dissent occurred in 1972. Tiro not only precipitated this outbreak but was also at the centre of it. And in 1973 he became SASO’s chief organiser. There is no doubting the link between Tiro’s expulsion and the emergence of the South African Students Movement (SASM) in April 1972. Indications are that while Biko proved to be resourceful in organizing students in institutions of higher learning, he did not have any interactions with those in high schools. It was left to Tiro and other adherents of BCM to mobilize students at high schools. And as Tiro’s presence at Morris Isaacson became apparent, the authorities were alarmed. Morris Isaacson High School became known as the “cradle of resistance” and produced the likes of Tsietsi Mashinini, one of the student leaders who spearheaded the 1976 Soweto uprisings. Tiro was therefore instrumental in establishing SASM. SASM and SASO were affiliates of BCM and their aim was to influence the direction of Southern African student politics. In 1972 he was elected the Honorary President of the movement at a congress in Lesotho. However, it was not long before the government started putting pressure on school prin-

cipals to dismiss those students they had offered employment to after they were expelled from universities. After six months at Morris Isaacson, Tiro was expelled. After Tiro lost his teaching post, the apartheid government used its powers to silence or restrict SASO’s leadership. Those affected, becoming famously known as the SASO Nine, included Steve Biko, (who had become SASO’s leader at its inception), Bokwe Mafuna, Barney Pityana, Saths Cooper, Strini Moodley, Harry Nengwekhulu, Drake Koka and Jerry Modisane. Nengwekhulu had just returned to South Africa after spending nearly two decades in exile in Botswana. Biko had broken away from the white dominated student body NUSAS to form the blackled SASO. Travelling to all parts of Southern Africa, including Lesotho, Swaziland and Botswana, Tiro won more support for the Black Consciousness philosophy. However, towards the end of 1973 he found out that the police were planning to arrest him and he fled to Botswana, where he played a leading role in the activities of SASM, SASO and the Black People’s Convention (BPC). While living a simple life at the Roman Catholic Mission at Khale, a village about 20km from Gaberone, he was instrumental in forging links with militant revolutionary groups such as the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) in 1973. On 1 February 1974, while still in Botswana, Tiro was completing an application form to continue his studies through Unisa when a student known only as Lawrence handed him a parcel supposedly forwarded by the International University Exchange Fund (IUEF). As he opened it, the parcel bomb exploded, killing him instantly. Tiro was buried in Botswana. In 1998 Tiro's remains were exhumed by the Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) and his family and returned to Dinokana for reburial. Unfortunately the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) failed to conduct an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. In a tribute to Tiro the president of (AZAPO), Mosibudi Mangena, described him as “a man of strong convictions who refused to compromise his principles, a person of simple tastes who could not accept the way black people had been dehumanised by the apartheid policy, a man who lived by the motto that it is better to die for the an idea that will live than to live for an idea that will die”. The assassination of Tiro in Botswana in 1974 was part of a series of attacks on BCM activists considered instrumen-

tal in spreading dissent in South Africa. This followed the death of Mthuli Shezi in December 1972, one of Tiro’s close associates, at the Germiston Railway Station. Shezi was pushed under a moving train, supposedly by a white station cleaner. Mapetla Mohapi was another activist and a close associate of Tiro, Biko and Shezi who fell victim to brutality leveled against BCM activists. He died in detention in August 1976 in what the police claimed was suicide. They said he hanged himself. Another was Wellington Tshazibane, who, it was claimed, hanged himself while in police detention in December 1976. Tshazibane was known to have masterminded the aborted bomb attack on a restaurant at the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg for which Isaac Seko was convicted and jailed for 12 years. The killings of BCM activists continued into 1977, with several others being targets. These included Jacky Mashabane, who also died in detention for his association with Tshazibane. Matthews Mabelane, a student at Madibane High School also died in detention early in 1977, with police claiming that he fell from the 10th floor in an attempt to escape. But the most outrageous death in detention was that of Steve Biko in September 1977. All these were deaths of people who, in one way or another, were linked to Tiro. For a while after Biko’s death in 1977 deaths in detention tapered off. From 1978 a series of terror trials followed, related to attacks carried out mainly by Umkhonto we Sizwe cadres. And as part of PW Botha’s response to what he perceived as a “Total Onslaught” mounted by the ANC, these trials ended with the accused being convicted and sentenced to death. The first of these and one that caught the attention of international media was that of Solomon Mahlangu during 1978/9. Early in the 1980s cross-border attacks on activists, similar to the attack on Tiro, resumed. Targets included well known personalities like Chris Hani (several assassination attempts on him in Lesotho failed), Ruth First (killed by a parcel bomb in Mozambique), Albie Sachs (his arm was blown away by a parcel bomb), to name but a few. These attacks were not restricted to countries across South Africa’s borders. An attempt on Dulcie September’s life was carried out in Paris, France. Other methods of political assassination included cross-border abductions of activists. South Africa’s security police raided the headquarters of liberation movements in neighbouring countries and kidnapped activists who would never be found. But it does appear that Tiro was the first crossborder victim of the security police’s campaign of eliminating state opponents through the use of parcel bombs.

TIRO CONFRONT APARTHEID SETTLER COLONIALISM Mr. Chancellor, Mr. Vice Chancellor, ladies and gentlemen, allow me to start off by borrowing language from our former Prime Minister, Mr. Vorster. Addressing an Afrikaner Student Bond (A.S.B) Congress in June last year, Mr. Vorster said: “No Black man has landed in trouble for fighting for what is legally his”. Although I don’t know how far true this is, I make this statement my launch pad. R.D. Briensmead, an American lay preacher says “he who withholds the truth or debars men from motives of its expediency, is a coward, a criminal or both”. Therefore Mr. Chancellor, I will try as much as possible to say nothing else but the truth. And to me “truth” means “practical reality”. Addressing us on the occasion of the formal opening of this university Mr. Phatudi, a Lebowa territorial authority officer, said that in as much as there is American Education, there had to be Bantu Education. Ladies and gentlemen, I am conscientiously bound to differ with him. In America there is nothing like R.D. Briensmead, Red Indian Education and White American Education. They have American Education common to all Americans. But in South Africa, we have Bantu Education, Indian Education, Coloured Education and European Education. We do not have a system of education common to all South Africans. What is there in European education which is not good for the African? We want a system of education which is common to all South Africans. In theory Bantu Education gives our parents a say in our education but in practice the opposite is true. At this University, University Education Diploma (U.E.D) students are forced to study Philosophy of the Education through the medium of Afrikaans. When we want to know why, we are told that the Senate has decided so. Apparently this Senate is our parents. Time and again I ask myself how Black lecturers contribute to the administration of this university. For if you look at all committees, they are predominantly white, if not completely white. Here and there one finds two or three Africans who, in the opinion of students are white Black men. We have a Students’ Dean without duties. We feel that if it is in anyway necessary to have a Students’ Dean, we must elect our own Dean. We know people who can represent us.

Ikamva’s Bathandwa caught up with

10

Ambitious, intelligent, confident and beautiful those are just some of the words Miss Khanya fm 2012 Yonela Mtongana used to describe herself. Ikamva caught up with this bubbly 17 year old Msobomvu Senior Secondary school learner.  Where did you grow up? I grew up in Butterworth but I also spent some years in East London.  How was Yonela, the child? I was always the simple girl, your usual township girl.  When did you start competing in beauty pageants? I started when I was 7 years at Grade 1, but I didn’t take it as something important back then and I just stopped. Then I started again at grade 7 and I haven’t looked back.  Tell us about Miss Khanya? I applied because I thought this is something that is in line with the kind of work which I’m interested in which is modelling. Miss KCR 2012 at Ikamva LaseGcuwa offices in Butterworth. Picture: Batandwa Malingo

 What has changed since you were crowned Miss Khanya 2012? I do modelling, the competi-

tion was tough and then I won, it is a success for me and I met people that can take me places with my modelling, agencies and stuff and I still hope other modelling agencies will come to me.  What does it mean being Miss Khanya 2012? I inspired other girls by winning this kind of show because I went there also with my natural hair, you can be natural and win shows like these. Modelling is not just about the beauty it also requires brains. I like sharing advice with other people and I’m always willing to open to other people about how I boost myself, how do I keep confident.  What did you win? I won a laptop and I’m going to use it for my studies.  How do they treat you at school now? Everyone is excited, they know I’m a model but now they always ask me what did

you win and stuff like that. Even here in town people stare at me now and I’m like okay… okay… cool. But all in all they show appreciation.  You must have lots of male fans also? OMG, there was a comment ohh girl things like that, I don’t pay attention to that, I just glance at you. They recognise me a lot. I get cars hoot at me, I just wave, those are my fans I can’t be mean.  What do you see in your Future? I’m still in Grade 11, I want to pass my Grade 11, matric, go to varsity, and then I need to settle on my studies and make sure I know what I want. Besides modelling I need to get my degree first and I want to balance them both. Modelling doesn’t just end here.  So education is important to you hey? School is important, and also following what you want, your passion is important.

What I can say is that you must try to balance the two.  What can you say to young girls out there who now look up to you? You can win whatever you do if only you don’t compare yourself with others, just look at yourself and love what you see. That is one other thing that gives you that drive because you can see that you are a supermodel. Also you can’t be shy because there are cameras flashing and be bold even when you walk on stage just enjoy it, believe in yourself. Look for role models for motivation.  Last words? I want to thank everyone who always had faith in me. I want to thank my family for their approval to do this, my friends who always scream for me when I’m on stage. Even people I don’t know who kept telling me “you going to do it just keep smiling”. I appreciate that a lot.

Career Corner Lusanda Mangxamba

Deciding on a career

L

ast month was the first piece of our monthly Career Corner and it focused on what a career is; and to recap, we said that a career encompasses a whole range of factors including your education, training, skills you acquired throughout your life, community and leisure activities and any enterprise activities that you may have been involved in at some point in your life. My career took a long time to develop, therefore do not be stressed if you find that you aren’t sure what your career is or know what you are good at or what you want to do. It was only in my thirties that I began realising that what I wanted to do was to be a business consultant. There are several reasons for my not knowing earlier what it was I wanted to focus on: - I didn’t really know what I was good at; all I knew what that I was really bad at science and biology at school and could do maths and accounting quite well - I wasn’t sure what careers where possible if I did accounting and maths except maybe to be a chartered accountant - I didn’t even know the profession called Consulting existed until well into my twenties and thirties I then did a number of jobs, including looking of vacation jobs while I was

studying, trying a few things out, realising what I liked and disliked until I heard about consulting and applied and got a job after a number of rejections. For some people they know immediately that they want to be a doctor, nurse, lawyer, brick layer, social worker, policeman or life just avails a certain career to them. What I would advise if you want to decide on what career is right for you: - Begin by determining what you like to do - Identify the skills you use when you are doing the things you enjoy - Think of fields broadly that your skills that you have can be used in; this can be a number of fields. For example, if like me you like maths and accounting, the fields where these can be used include running a business, working in a bank, working in someone else’s business, working in government in their finance department - Of the fields you listed, identify the ones you are most interested in and do as much research as you can on these fields, including speaking to people who are in these jobs - Sign up for training in the fields that you have identified, including looking for vacation job if you are studying or asking for an internship in different companies if you are already working; you will get a lot rejections but just keep positive and keep looking

WITH MY PEN

by Sithandiwe Velaphi

Civil Society should pair with Local Media O n October 22, I attended a Civil Society Organisation (CSO) Media Training organised by Eastern Cape Communication Forum in partnership with Walter Sisulu University and Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (Germany International Corporation). The training was held in East London. As I have implied, the training was meant to provide training for civil society on how to use, to their advantage, Local Independent Media (LIM) which include Ikamva LaseGcuwa. Those who conducted the session on media included myself, former Daily Dispatch editor and now editorial consultant Gavin Stuart, former Radio Grahamstown programmer Khaya Thonjeni. CSOs can be defined as the multitude of associations around which society voluntarily organises itself and which represent a wide range of interests and ties within their respective communities. These can include communitybased organisations, indigenous peoples’ organisations and non-government organisations. Think of the one CSO near you.

CSOs can be defined as the multitude of associations around which society voluntarily organises itself and which represent a wide range of interests and ties within their respective communities.

The underlying part of this is that CSO should use LIM to their advantage because the two sectors are working on the interest of their community. This is particularly important given the lack of capacity in many of the LIM’s newsrooms where the latter have resorted to cut and paste or follow suit to what the mainstream media is doing. LIM are supposed to report news based on what is happening within their communities, be it events, issues or explanatory. Look on our front page a story about Butterworth’s Fingoland Mall and an ongoing case involving the murder of Butterworth’s priest, Rev Ongama Xuba. May Xuba rest in peace! The training was a good initiative by ECCF because in the past there has not been that good relation between the two sectors. There has to be good partnership between the two sectors for the benefit of our respective communities. CSO are doing a great job of creating awareness among the communities. These include discouraging unsafe sex, irresponsible families, usage of drugs and non-treatment of diseases. CSO are further involved in promoting an active citizenship, those that hold government accountable and actively participating in their country’s development. Does not this deserve a space in our local newspaper and radio? Why cannot we hear or see much of it in our newspapers or radios? To be honest I have not heard much of CSO stories even on our mainstream media. I have been wondering. One thing that I emphasised was to form the partnerships between the two sectors. There has to be existing partnerships between the two. Our communities need to hear

or see what our CSOs are doing and what their programmes in respect of the challenges our communities are facing in the area of living. CSO need to communicate their programmes to the media for coverage. The partnership, if formed, can help better the understanding between the two. The good relations between the CSO can also help alleviate some of the problems or challenges currently besetting our communities. The partnerships between the two are of mutual benefit. LIM will benefit by having more local content on what is happening around the community it is serving. CSOs will benefit by having its programmes communicated to the LIM. The partnerships become the key in this. When the CSO is going out to communities for its wellness it should involve LIM. When there are issues the CSO needs to raise, again it should contact its LIM. CSO can also respond to many of the issues raised within the country for example the State of the Nation Address and the State of Province Address. This is not to live behind the State of the Municipality Address. To raise this CSO need to write commentary such as the one page six in our newspaper. They can also write press releases to the media commenting on such issues. Of course a community newspaper like Zithethele in Port Elizabeth can never take an interest about political infighting happening in Mnquma (Butterworth), which is for example written by We Care NGO. The story about Mnquma infighting will of course be more important to Ikamva LaseGcuwa.
