‘How can a man die better?’ SITHANDIWE VELAPHI and BATANDWA MALINGO

M

lungisi Mark Mnyani was a teacher with seventeen years experience at Thembelihle Junior Secondary School in Ndabakazi, Butterworth. Mnyani, 44, loved music and above all he was so in touch with his family which included his wife, Masithathu, and their three children. He came in Butterworth in 1995 after completing his training for education at Algoa College of Education in Port Elizabeth. He was also a committed church member attached at Assemblies of God. His love for music resulted in the formation of a gospel trio, Melody Voices, which he formed to together with his two friends, who are both teachers. Mnyani died horrifically on November 09 after he was attacked by the two Ndabankulu Senior Secondary students who are currently in police custody. The two students,

aged 17 and 18 respectively, have missed writing their exams according to the principal Vuyani Thongo. Thongo recently spoke to Ikamva LaseGcuwa. He said they are still coming to terms to understand how their students can behave in such a manner. Thongo said the two students are in Grade 10 and Grade 11. It is alleged that Mnyani was drinking with Luthando Ngambu, 18, in a tavern at Ndabakazi Village, Butterworth on November 09 prior to his murder. “Both went to sleep at the home of the educator as his wife was at Bizana where is she is teaching. It is believed the deceased became drowsy and slept. It was at that stage that Ngambu drove away with the car of the deceased and he went to his friend at Komga near East London,” said police spokesperson Capt Jackson Manatha. Manatha said the pupils decided to drove back to the home of the teacher where

they allegedly attacked him while sleeping teacher and drove with his corpse to back to Komga. Mnyani’s elder sister, Nomfundo Mrholeni, said they are painful at the manner in which their younger brother died. “We are speaking here of a very dedicated person who loved his family more than anything else. We are deeply hurt of his sudden death,” said Mrholeni. Mnyani’s friend, Simphiwe Mlonyeni, said: “We became friends ever since 1995. We even formed a gospel trio where we singing on our leisure and to local functions. He died at the time when we were thinking of grooming other young people into our group. How can he die better,” said Mlonyeni, a teacher by profession. Mnyani was born in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth in 1968. He matriculated at

the local Caweni High School and went to train for a teacher at Algoa College of Education. He has been teaching at Thembelihle since 1995 and is survived by three children, his wife Masithathu and siblings. Principal at Thembelihle, Humphrey Mboniswa said he called Mnyani’s wife who was also in the dark about his whereabouts, since she is working in Bizana. “He was then reported as a missing person at Butterworth police station,” said Mboniswa. Teachers and students praised Mnyani as a humble, determined chorister and teacher. “He was my mentor, a chorister, a family man, father to the learners and a well organised teacher,” said his colleague Ncediwe Nxusani at Mnyani’s memorial service in Butterworth. Mnyani was buried at Ndabakazi on November 24. Student Sikhulule Tshem echoed Nxusani’s words and said that his class teacher (Mnyani) was a humble man and it was easy to talk to him about their problems. “We wish to get another teacher like him,” he said. South African Democratic Teacher’s Union’s Nosipho Yozi said Mnyani was “silent as a grief”. “But when he spoke at a meeting you would have to sit down and analyse what he said before you could answer,” said Yozi. The two students have appeared twice at Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder. Their next appearance is December 11 for bail application. The 17-year-old student has been taken to an East London place which keeps young offenders.

shocking resolution taken by Mnquma Local Municipality council to suspend mayor Bhabha Ganjana in a council meeting held on November 20 is “illegal”, according to MEC for Local Government Mlibo Qoboshiyane. The council suspended Ganjana, who was absent in the meeting, and appointed Timothy Madikane as an acting executive mayor. Qoboshiyane stated that the resolution taken by the council was illegal in terms of legislation applicable to local government. He then ordered the council through a letter sent to the speaker,

Nomnikelo Magadla to hold a special council meeting within five days to re-instate Ganjana. The letter was sent on November 23. The MEC’s statements further read that “drastic steps” will be taken against the councillors who took part in the passing of the resolution should the mayor be not re-instated. When Ikamva LaseGcuwa contacted the council speaker Nomnikelo Magadla who is supposed to, according to the statement “urgently convene a special council meeting” said that she does not know anything about the letter. “I’m on sick leave, I have not seen any letter from the MEC,” she said at the time.

CGE holds workshop for working women Batandwa Malingo

C

ommission for Gender Equality in conjunction with Mnquma Local Municipality hosted a workshop on access to maternity benefits for working and self employed women on November 16 at Butterworth town hall. Kerry Oosthuysen from the commission said that the purpose of the workshop was to get views of women on how they are treated at work when they are pregnant and in need of Unemployment Insurance Fund. She said that maternity benefits or

UIF discriminates against other woman. “According to UIF rules a self employed person is not seen as an employee and that is a problem because when you take a leave to attend to the child and not working, where will you get the money,” she asked. Babalwa Tyopo, an attorney who has just started practising on her own private firm said that the Act that classifieds them as not employees is a problem. “Employment Equity Act is direct discrimination,” she said. She said that as self employed women they are not after money but want what is rightfully theirs. “This

Department of labour presented the UIF rules and regulations to the low attended workshop. Other stakeholders who participated include Butterworth rehab, Women with disability, Msobomvu HCBC, Phakamisani and Gender Based Support. Khaya Nkontso who is an education officer at the Commission for Gender Equality said that they are going to take the views and recommendations

from the workshop and get other views from other provinces then compile a report and present it to parliament. He however expressed great disappointment at the low attendance. “It is disappointing to see that people did not attend especially those who are affected like saloon owners, hawkers and caterers. We did not see them today and we still want to get their views as well,” he said.

AmaXhosa queen send off Sithandiwe Velaphi

Her Majesty, the AmaXhosa Queen Nondwe Sigcawu’s funeral at Nqadu Great Place in Willowvale on November 03, had all the requirements of the perfect queen. Sigcawu, 68, died on October 20 at Nqadu following chest pains. She was the wife to the late AmaXhosa King Xolilizwe Sigcawu and mother to Xhosa reigning monarch, King Mpendulo Zwelonke Sigcawu. Her funeral was divided into two kinds- a state and a royal funeral. Ndlovukazi, as the queen was affectionately known, was born at Nyandeni Great Place in Libode in 1944. She is the eldest child of the late Paramount Chief Tutor Ndamase. Her mother, Thandiwe Jessica Ndamase, was sister to the current AmaZulu King Goodwill Zwelithini. Among those who attended her funeral included Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa president Chief Phathekile Holomisa, UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, MEC for Traditional Affairs Mlibo Qoboshiyane, former president Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela and former president Thabo Mbeki's mother, Epainette Mbeki. AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo and AmaMpomndo King Zanozuko Sigcau were the only two kings who attended the funeral while AmaRharhabe, Nyandeni royal houses sent their representatives. There were also representatives from the kingdom of AmaZulu and AmaSwazi. Prince Mlamli Ndamase, who speaks on behalf of Nyandeni Royal House, described Queen Nondwe as dedicated community builder who stopped at none in making sure that rural people’s standard of living were

uplifted. “Queen Nondwe’s passing should live a legacy of unit among all royal households across all nations. AmaXhosa and AmaMpondo are united today because of dedicated members like Her Majesty, Queen Nondwe. This must not come to halt. It must continue to other generations,” Ndamase said. AmaRharhabe representative Prince Siqithi Maqoma said: “Queen Nondwe was a unifier. She never discriminated against any royal households. She used to visit our own. This has taught us that unit is the key to solving problems that comes our way.” Xhosa Royal House representative Chief Zanenqaba Manxiwa told mourners that Queen Nondwe was a dignified and disciplined royal house member. “The Queen played a key role in consolidating and coordinating us for many of our tasks in respect to rural development,” Manxiwa said. MEC for Finance and Provincial Planning Pumulo Masualle, who spoke on behalf of President Jacob Zuma and Eastern Cape government said he remembered Queen Nondwe when she was still an MEC for Health. “On a number of occasions I was invited into a lot of health related programmes here at Nqadu. This goes to show how Her Majesty was dedicated in improving the lives of our people. She displayed unit in all of the programmes she was involved with. All of us need to learn and emulate Queen Nondwe’s leadership styles which include the involvement of people in everything we do,” Masualle said. Queen Nondweis survived by her son, King Sigcawu, Princess NomaGcaleka, Prince Siseko and other children and grandchildren of the Xhosa Royal Family.

Commentary

16 Days of Activism Women, Children and People with Disabilities Minister visited Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature on November 29 to launch the provincial 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. This is the extract of what she said.

I

am inspired by the seriousness and firmness with which the Eastern Cape provincial government confronts the scourge of gender-based violence. I am certain that your practical actions will help turn the tide against women and child abuse. Friends and colleagues, I am certain that, collectively, we carry a huge responsibility on our shoulders as we seek to ensure that out of this summit emerge effective strategies to eliminate genderbased violence. In the name of many women and children who have suffered and perished in the hands of their abusers, we dare not turn this event into another talkshop. We are all gathered here to answer this crucial and fundamental question in the most practical of ways: What are we doing, individually and collectively, to address this scourge that threatens to erode the gains we have made since 1994 to build a caring society? Beyond adopting the role of critics, what is it that other sectors can do to help government to eliminate violence against vulnerable groups? As we ponder these questions, let us agree that all of us need to do more than what we have been doing in order to reduce the unacceptably high levels of abuse in our society. It is important that all of us answer these questions, because it is easy and fashionable for anybody to blame somebody for this scourge without doing any personal selfreflection. The 25th of each month has been declared International Orange Day by the United Nations, UN Women in particular. The campaign is aimed at ensuring that violence against women and girls is observed on a daily basis and let all of us ensure that the Orange Day Campaign/ 25th of every month is

incorporated into our 365 days National Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence. As we mark the 13th anniversary of this national campaign which began in 1999, we must accelerate our offensive against gender-based violence. According to the UN General Assembly gender-based violence is: “Any act of violence that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women; including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life”. Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), in its various forms, is prevalent in communities around the world, cutting across class, race, age, religion and national boundaries. As a country, we are not immune to this scourge. Women from rural areas and lower socio-economic levels are more vulnerable to gender-based crimes, such as rape, domestic violence and child abuse. The reality that we must collectively confront is the reluctance on the part of some victims of violence to come forward and seek legal advice and social support. This could be due to lack of knowledge of their rights, the social stigma around domestic violence. In addition, the financial dependence of women on their partners exacerbates their vulnerability and tends to force them to stay in abusive relationships. Women are faced with several challenges which include discrimination, physical abuse, HIV and AIDS and other diseases. Despite numerous treaties, declarations and interventions from government by rights groups and NGOs, rape is still widespread and often goes unreported. Gender-based violence is also

used as a weapon of war especially in countries that are in war and conflict, where women and children are the worst affected. Rape, sexual slavery, murder as well as hostage taking are used as weapons of war to humiliate the enemy. Furthermore, women who have been physically and sexually assaulted are often in need of health care services and in some instances these are not easily available or accessible. It is likely that genderbased violence may extend to future generations as children who have witnessed abuse or were victims themselves, often suffer lasting psychological damage or become abusers themselves. We must look and check what our children are watching on TV, in their cellphones, etc. Studies have shown that exposure to gender-based violence and sexual coercion significantly increase girls’ and women’s chances of early sexual activity, experiencing forced sex, engaging in transactional sex, and non-use of condoms. The impact of sexual and gender-based violence resonates in all areas of health and social programming: survivors of sexual violence experience increased rates of morbidity and mortality, and violence has been shown to exacerbate HIV transmission, among other health conditions Gender-based violence robs women of the opportunity to become productive citizens of the country. It denies them their constitutional rights and condemns them to a life of perpetual fear. They are therefore prevented from enjoying the fruits of our freedom and democracy. This means that the strategic objective of making ours a truly non-sexist society is not advanced. Xingwana is Women, Children and People with Disabilities Minister

Can’t put my finger on it With the matric exams having just ended this last week most are keeping their hands crossed for positive results come end December when department of basic education announces the results. This one of the most important times in the lives of matriculants in terms of giving moral support on whatever the results bring the question is can we, do we or should we? The recent reported rapes of old age grannies in Centane and Flagstaff this even though we have for the past years been condemning such actions seems that criminals do not even have the decency to listen to the national distress call over the years against such acts. The questions again, are we doing enough as communities, the police and justice? Are the sentences deterrent to the crime? Do they send the right message? Does the sentence fit the crime or is just an unending nightmare with end insight? In a crime prevention summit held in Butterworth earlier in the year murder, rape, robbery (especially street and house), burglaries and stock theft were identified as growing to be problematic in the area. Communities were urged to take part in the prosecution of criminals as they are within communities. I therefore believe that until such time that communities seriously take the matter under urgency, we will continue to cry foul of unfolding events with the 16 days of activism against women and children just an event as it is today. Health Tips For Women We all want to stay healthy at all times. So is there anything we can do to avoid problems with our health. Yes, there are quite a few thing we can and should do.

W

omen of their twenties and thirties should have a Pap smear if they are sexually active every five years. They should always use condom when having sex, unless they have been in stable relationship for more than three months and both their partner and themselves have tested for sexually transmitted infection including HIV and are found to be negative. If you don’t want to have a baby / get pregnant you should use contraception or preventive measure against pregnancy. There are many different methods of prevention that are available, for example pill, injection or coil. I recommend the coil as it is very safe and the most convenient. It is put inside of the women’ uterus or womb

by a doctor or a nurse and it can stay there for up to 10 years. It can be removed at any time. It is as good in preventing the pregnancy as tubal ligation or tying the tubes. If you are trying to get pregnant and have a baby you should take folic acid. This tablet prevents abnormalities in babies and it is very important to take it early in pregnancy. So do start taking even before you re pregnant. Women in their forties should start having a mammogram, e.g. a special X-ray to look for cancer of the breast. One can also check for lumps of the breast by feeling them every month. The breast cancer is quite common, and it’s becomes more common as women get older. Women in their fifties and

older should start worrying about their bones. They should calcium tablets to prevent bone loss and fractures. If a woman who stopped having menstrual periods got a bleeding again they should see a doctor immediately as it could be one of the symptoms of cancer of the womb. Once you get older sex may become uncomfortable due the dryness of vagina. In such cases one can use KY-gel or if it does help get a special cream from a doctor. It is important to eat healthy (lots of fruit and vegetables and avoid fatty and sweet foods) and maintain healthy weight. This will help you to avoid many diseases such as heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure. Exercising at least 30 minutes a day helps to stay healthy and be

he itchy, scaly rash known as eczema is often mistaken for an allergy because the factors which cause allergies can aggravate sensitive skin – such as dust, temperature, stress and some foods. Also known as atopic dermatitis (inflamed skin), eczema is a long-term skin condition in which the skin turns red, is easily irritated and occasionally produces small, fluid-filled bumps that burst when they are scratched. People affected by eczema find their skin is overly sensitive to allergens in the environment, such as plant pollens, moulds, dust, changes in temperature, some kinds of clothing and dyes, and certain foods such as eggs, milk, peanuts and fish. Dr Z Badi, a general practitioner from Dutywa, said some forms of eczema tend to run in families with a history of allergies: “Eczema is also associated with asthma and hay fever. The itching of the skin may be severe leading to emotional disturbances.” The condition is not contagious and affects all races and first appears about the age of three months. According to www. kidshealth.org one out of ten kids is likely to develop eczema. Symptoms and signs vary; the eruption usually begins on the cheeks. Other symptoms are leathery skin on the face, upper trunk, wrists and hands, folds of knees and elbows. “I suggest as soon as the person experiences these tendencies they visit a doctor,” Badi said. Lulama Ndamase, a mother of two children from Ntabankulu, said: "I didn't know what my kids had because at first I thought it was a normal allergy, so I gave them Allergex syrup but it would only disappear for a short while and be back again.” Then one morning Lulama saw that her

kids’ skin were red and had watery sores, she decided to go and see a dermatologist who helped a lot even though the treatment costs R1 200 for both children. After paying so much for her children’s treatment she advises parents to get help from clinics if they cannot afford to pay for medicines as eczema is manageable. Nicole Langa, a student from Dutywa said: "It started as a heat rash on my face but as months passed the problem grew bigger, but thanks to my mother she took me to a skin doctor in East London. I'm getting help and the treatment is working even though I have to go there after two months. Eczema has affected my life so badly and lowered my self-esteem." Dr Badi suggests that people can prevent eczema by avoiding harsh skin soaps, warm temperature climates, exposure to ultra-violet rays and food that triggers it. They also need to ensure that after they have been diagnosed by the doctor and given treatment, they use it for seven days until it works. Some children may not outgrow eczema and the condition continues into adulthood. – WSU-SNA

in a good mood. Everyone should have HIV test every year. It is very important to know your HIV status. If you happen to be HIV positive, you will need to have your CD4 count checked every year. You may need to be started on medications for HIV. Nowadays, we have excellent treatment for HIV and though the disease cannot be cured, people should not die from it if they take treatment. It is also important to have all the vaccinations to prevent various infection. It is not just kids, but also adults who need protection fro infections with vaccines. I have described a few important health issues and preventive measure we can use. Our lives will be easier if follow such measures.

Emotional abuse wrecks lives By Anelisa Yonto

N

ombasa Tini (not her real name) a 22-year-old woman from Mdantsane in East London suffered emotional abuse by her mother and could not even get support from her own family. “I was called shameful names by my own mother, whom I thought would be the one to protect me from the pain and hurt in the world,” says Nombasa.”This happened for a year after I passed my matric and did not have any idea career wise. She would shout at me every time I had done something wrong and I would be scared, I even preferred being beaten up.” Nombasa is one of more than a 100 people a year who come through the doors of the East London branch of the Families and Marriage Association of South Africa (Famsa), says Siyanda Moya, a counselor at the centre. “Males and females come to us and report cases of emotional abuse.” Domestic abuse is chronic mistreatment in families, marriages, dating and other close relationships. It can include emotional abuse. Nombasa says she has never told a soul about her ordeal, not even a close friend. “I was ashamed of what people would think of our relationship as mother and daughter. I just stood there in shock, my body was numb and my ears were filled with a big drumming noise as she kept saying all the horrible names and pointing fingers at me. The names kept ringing through my mind as I tried going

to sleep.” “Our relationship is now like any mother-daughter relationship should be. My mother realises that she was harsh and hurtful towards me and we are now trying to move on with a better relationship,” says Nombasa. Moya says any kind of abuse is unacceptable and no one deserves to be abused. “Emotional abuse leaves inside scares that cannot be seen and lowers your self-esteem,” says Moya. Victims of emotional abuse who are called horrible names often end up thinking that the names are true and they are at fault. “More females report emotional abuse but you would find that most of the victims are men. They do not complain because of culture-related issues and pride,” says Moya. He suggests that men suffer in silence as reported cases of men as victims of emotional abuse are very low. Moya says in their campaigns they try to encourage men to come out and report. Moya suggests most emotional abusers have grown up witnessing abuse in their own families. “Children grow up in that kind of environment and they end up thinking that it is the right thing to do,” says Moya. “Some of the victims do not even realise that they are being abused.” Famsa offers counselling services and emotional support and educates their clients on how to handle these issues. “We also use the local media, such as Tru Fm and Mdantsane FM, to help spread the word to those who do not know about us,” he says. – WSUSNA

T

he community of Mnquma would have been able to spend these sunny days by the water pool which its construction was supposed to be finished by May last year, but unfortunately the water pool is still incomplete due to two companies that were booted out for primarily running out of cash. According to Zanemvula Ngovela, Mnquma’s Infrastructure, Planning and Development director the construction of the water pool is an upgrade from a pool which was built many years ago. The water pool is situated just two blocks away from Butterworth Library. He said the idea to upgrade came from the municipality so they approached the Municipal Infrastructural Grant (MIG) but were told they would pay half. “We decided to approach department of Sports, Recreation and Arts and Culture they agreed to sponsor the upgrade which we want to be of Olympic standards,” said Ngovela. The department then approached the COEGA Development Corporation which then appointed Mlonyeni Con- Delayed: The construction of Mnquma water pool is still on hold after two companies responstructors on behalf of the department sible for the construction were kicked out for incompetence. they didn’t have money for suppliers, no money for workers, last year there were pauses to the project as workers would strike for money,” said Ngovela. It was then agreed by the department and COEGA to release Nande Tina Projects as well. According to Ngovela the department with Coega then approached three “well established” constructors to visit the site and quote how much will the outstanding work cost. “So they did that and submitted to COEGA and upon the approval of those submissions by COEGA a contractor will come back to site to finish off the little work that is left, reality is that I can’t say when is that as their submissions have not yet been approved by COEGA or the department,” said Ngovela. Asked if a “well established” company was used from the beginning wouldn’t the water pool be complete. “I can’t say that because they advertised and invited everybody and Mlonyeni happened to be the best, so in government tenders, they look at the person who got the highest points which is influenced mostly by his price so experience is not a major thing it is just to see if the company is capable and Mlonyeni had history that they have constructed some pools that is why they got the tender,” he said. He said that if the construction can resume in December then by January next year the water pool would be finished as there is not much construction work left. “We also apologise for inconvenience caused because the water pool would have been used even by last year during these hot times,” said Ngovela.

Biography of XHOSA QUEEN MOTHER NONDWE SIGCAWU Last Praise to the Queen

I

ndlovukazi Nondwe Sigcawu mother to Xhosa King Mpendulo, Ah! Zwelonke! was born at Nyandeni Great Place in Libode on the 27th June 1944. She is the Daughter and the eldest child of the late Paramount Chief Tutor Nyangilizwe Ndamase and Ndlovukazi Thandiwe Jessica Ndamase. She started her schooling at Nyandeni Junior Secondary School, Marubeni Junior Secondary and then proceeded to Buntingville Senior Secondary School where she matriculated. She enrolled at Hilltown College for teacher training and after completing her training she was offered a teaching post at the Nyandeni Junior Secondary School. After a little while there she went back to school to further her studies, enrolling for a nursing course and underwent for training at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. She graduated with a senior degree in Nursing. She took up a nursing post with Edendale Hospital and worked in the institution for several years before she relocated back home in the former Transkei. In the former Transkei she worked at Makhotyana Clinic, a division of St Barnabas Hospital in Libode. In 1977 she met His Majesty, late King Xolilizwe Sigcawu King of all Xhosas Ah! Xolilizwe! courting resulting in a royal marriage arranged with the recemony taking place in 1979 at Nqadu Royal Palace in Willowvale. With Xolilizwe they were blessed with two children Prince Nondoda Sigcawu and Princess Nomagcaleka Sigcawu, declared Queen of the Great House (Undlunkulu) on her arrival at heart of the Xhosa Kingdom. Queen a Community Developer Her Majesty, Queen Nondwe became a very active in the community, providing leadership amongst other women, coming up with initiatives intended

to engender growth and development in rural areas. She became a source of inspiration to many people especially the youth and women. Queen Nondwe continued with her passion of nursing and worked closely with local clinics at Nqadu village and adjacent locations. Several communities requested her to make appearances in their areas and this led to her establishing herself as a Private Health Practitioner. She became very busy with this initiative and saw her opening consulting rooms in a myriad of rural locations. Her majesty also had compassion for education and motivated the youth to prioritise their studies. She was also passionate about education by instilling the culture of learning in the Kingdom. As result of her activism in Education she was honoured with naming one of the schools in Willowvale “Nondwe Senior Secondary School” after her. Contribution to the Traditional Leadership Queen Nondwe was very instrumental in the formation of Imbumba Yamakhoskazi Akomkhulu (IYA). She was also a committed member of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa. In 2005 Queen Nondwe suffered a major setback with the passing of her husband His Majesty, King Xolilizwe Sigcawu which affected her health. After her mourning season of the departure of King Xolilizwe the Xhosa royal family officially declared Queen Nondwe as the Queen Mother of the Xhosa Kingdom. She was furthermore given the responsibility of heading IBhotwe Traditional Council as its chairperson. She took these positions with the utmost humility and great sense of responsibility. The Queen Mother personalised the struggle for rural economic development for dignity. The Queen mother officiated in numerous projects of the Xhosa royal council, including the conferring of Royal Accolades like the King Hintsa Bravery Awards and Intlalo kaXhosa Orders. Her recent public ap-

pearance at Mbhashe Royal Village during the World Tourism Day on the 27th September this year. Queen Nondwe Sigcawu passed died on the 20th October 2012 and is survived by her son, reigning Monarch, King Zwelonke, Princess Nomagcaleka, Prince Siseko, and many children and grandchildren of the Xhosa Royal family. The poem below is an edited abstract from a speech by former president Thabo Mbeki during the funeral of late King Xolilizwe Sigcawu Ah! Xolilizwe in 2006. Ndiyakuhlala ndinaniphi ndingumntu nje, Ndingumntu nje int'ehlal'ihlal'igoduke, Ndingumntu nje int'ehlal'ihlal'ihambele. Meet Khanya’s Fruity Mthulisi Skaap Bathandwa Malingo

Ikamva LaseGcuwa had the opportunity to have a chit-chat with the busybee Mtulisi Skaap or Fruity as she is widely known by her listeners of Khanya Community Radio. Born and bred in Mthatha, the 26 year old studied at Khanyisa High and continued to pursue a tertiary qualification at Walter Sisulu University. After two and half year of intense Public Relations theory it was time for training that was when she joined O.R.Tambo District Municipality for internship. She said that she was lucky enough to get a communications officer post at Mnquma Municipality after she finished off her internship and graduated. But her love for radio obliged her to not rest but look for a possible employment at Khanya community Radio in Butterworth. “I then approached Khanya Community Radio management and they welcomed me to the station as their

presenter and was mentored by Patrick Msengana who was still a Khanya radio jock at the time,” she said. Fruity’s broadcasting career kicked off in March this year when she started co-hosting with Patrick a show called Youth Movement which dedicated to the youth and deals with challenges they face. “It’s a programme of the youth that is living now, you will recall that we are faced with lots of challenges like HIV/AIDS, drugs, unemployment, crime and so on. So those things we live with at the moment are exactly what the show is about,” said Skaap. In just two months after Fruity joined the station her mentor Patrick left so she was left alone to anchor the Youth Movement show which airs Saturdays evenings 06pm to 09pm. Asked about how she gets time to rest Fruity said that she works Monday to Friday at Mnquma. “On Saturday evenings I have to be on air for the Youth Movement sometimes I also do Love D’s show when he’s not available but I don’t get tired because I love radio in fact if I had to change careers I would take radio because I love radio, my love is in broadcasting,” she said. We had to push matters

and asked why she cannot change careers now, which she gladly answered by saying “I cannot now because I earn a living at Mnquma,” Fruity said that she spends her free time which is rare to her schedule by socialing watching television and listening to music. Skaap said that after joining Khanya Community Radio she does not listen to other radio stations. “I don’t really listen to other stations because Khanya has become my home but I can say that I love Lulu Hermans and her show as it empowers women,” she admitted. She broke shocking news saying that she has a stalker at the moment but said it is not that serious. “I have a stalker as we speak, he smses, calls, but all in all my fans are all just nice,” she said. Fruity said that she stays original off and on air. “I’m me, I don’t change, I’m just the same Fruity off and on radio,” she said. What may be unfortunate though about Fruity to most of his male fans is that she is happily dating. She says the future is looking bright as she is currently studying at PRISSA in Johannesburg. “I’m doing public relations writing since I’m also a writer at Mnquma so

I thought I should grow my writing skills it may even help me at Khanya so I must be able to write, there are also audio subjects in my course, she said. She unconditionally thanked Patrick Msengana for having her taught her everything she knows about radio. “I want to thank the KCR fm station for welcoming me to their family because I’m now a member of the KCR family,” she said. Fruity had strong advice for her fans: “They must not give up, everything is possible, I know most of them are looking for work some are unemployed graduates, they must keep on buying newspapers and applying, you might never know. Because work won’t come to you if you are sitting at home you must get up look at websites, notice boards but also keep on listening on Khanya Community Radio fm,” she said. She also wished all her fans and friends a happy festive season. “I’m sure young people must have saved from January so there is going to be a lot of drinking, partying, people must not misbehave, they must behave well. Even on roads we know Arrive Alive campaign, people must obey the rules so that we may meet again in 2013,” she concluded.

The winner is ... Captain Jackson Manatha C aptain Jackson Ngazini Manatha was born in Thuthura, Centane, 51 years ago. He is the backbone behind our regular crime reports on Page 4. He feeds Ikamva LaseGcuwa and a host of provincial and national media houses for all criminal incidents drawn from Butterworth, Centane, Dutywa, Willowvale, Kei Bridge, Msobomvu and Ngqamakwe. On November 30 at East London’s International Convention Centre, Manatha was awarded the Best Communicator in the province following Star of the Year Awards organised by Eastern Cape police. Ikamva LaseGcuwa’s Sithandiwe Velaphi, who has been working closely with Manatha in the past four years, interviewed him. Sithandiwe Velaphi (SV): Captain, firstly congratulations on your award, how do you feel about it? Capt Jackson Manatha (JM): Thank you Sthara. I am overwhelmed about this award. My hard work has finally paid off. SV: What does this award means to you? JM: It means there are people out there who are recognising what am doing, though I am situated in the far flung areas. This is also the motivation for me to double my efforts in informing people on what is happening is happening around their areas. SV: Is your family happy with your award and how has been their support to you? JM: They are so happy. They are on cloud nine as I am speaking to you. This award will also serve as the motivation to my daughters who are looking up on me. My wife is also elated about my achievement. My family has been, and still is, so supportive to me. SV: When did you started being the communication officer of the Butterworth cluster and how has been the job? JM: In the police service I started in 1985. And then I was appointed the communicator in 2005. It has not been easy doing this job. I have fewer resources compared to other places like Port Elizabeth, East London and Mthatha. SV: How important is to communicate criminal incidents happening in your area? JM: It is so important. People need to kept aware of the incidents so that they can play their part in eliminating criminal elements in their areas. SV: I also note that the provincial management of police usually utilised you as Master of Ceremonies in many of its events. Why you? JM: It is my natural talent that I was given by God and my ancestors. I am so grateful that it is being noticed. I always make sure to do my best whenever I got the chance of being the MC. SV: Captain, once again thank you very much and congratulations on your award. JM: Thank you Sthara. Keep well!

Career Corner Lusanda Mangxamba. email:lusanda.mangxamba@gmail.com In the last few articles, I have been sharing with you the meaning of the word career, how you can define it for yourself and how to choose a career. Now that we are headed to the summer holidays, we can park the whole issue of careers, as that is something we can pick up in the New Year. Also, in a lot of cases, most of us don’t have the luxury of defining our careers and trying to enter into the area that we want to – most of the time it’s about being desperate for a job and trying to get hold of anything to earn an income. There is no worse feeling that having no income and being able and willing to work, but finding it difficult to land any job. Firstly I want to reassure you that you are not alone in your frustration and your desperation to work. It doesn’t matter how qualified you are, how much experience you have, what your age group is etc landing a job is difficult work. And it is highly competitive. You are not the only one applying for a particular post so you have to convince the person/company/ department looking for someone that you are the right one for the job. How do you do that? By understanding exactly what the job specification says i.e. how the job is described and making sure you have the capability to deliver on it. Another sure winner for getting that job is to show that you are a team player, who commits to her/his responsibilities and that you are reliable and pleasant. One thing that you need to do though, as

you search for job, is to use a combination of methods in your search: Methods for looking and finding a job: 1. Informing friends, family and acquaintances that you are looking for work This is the first thing that you need to do, inform everyone in your social circle that you are looking for a job and ask them if they know anyone looking, perhaps within the organisation that they work in. Let them know: - What your key qualities as an individual like for example that you are a team player, who is goal driven and are willing to go the extra mile etc - Experience (if you have any) - Qualifications (if you have any) I have been in a number of situations in a corporate environment where my boss will come to me and ask if I don’t know anyone who can fill a particular vacancy. Potential employers prefer to hire someone that has been referred to by an internal staff member because they will trust the judgement of the staff member more than going through CV’s sent by recruit consultants. 2. Recruitment consultants If you have recruitment consultants in the area that you live, it’s a good idea to lodge your CV with them, and have an interview with them to let them know that you are looking for a job; you must keep calling them to find out what is happening with your CV, and if there are any posts they have submitted it to. You must remember that these consultants are

Vuluhlanga S.S.S gets early Christmas from TETA I t was excitement galore at Vuluhlanga Senior Secondary School in Ndabakazi Butterworth when Nomawethu Sijake acting chief operations officer of TETA visited the school with early Christmas goodies. TETA which is the Transport and Education Training Authority came bearing gifts to female learners and grade twelve pupils. Sijake who was born in Centane said one the reasons to visit the school culminated after having noticed that it caters for needy learners and therefore they took it upon themselves to provide a little support before December holidays. “This programme is not only done to the province but a national in all nine provinces” she said. TETA brought sanitary to female learners as one of the programmes that have been undertaken by the organisation to assist poor communities’ especially rural and needy schools. The organisation also brought bursary to about five students consisting of three female and two male learners. Sijake said “The bursary we focus on grade twelve students that will pass their matric examinations this year, who did not have means to continue with their studies next year. The school will be the one that will decide which students will get the bursary as they are more familiar with the learners. All those will be chosen will be able to study at any FET colleges in the provinces and further their studies in courses of their liking”. Nomawethu Sijake continued to say those that will not get the bur-

sary should take this as a motivation for next year. Grade 12 learner Bongeka Mthintsilana said” I feel very excited with gifts and bursary from TETA, I want to thank Ms Sijake for the advise she gave us because it will help us have a bright future”. School governing board member Mr Matutu said this is the beginning of great things as the province is looked down upon in matric results. “I believe this is a motivation to learners to be motivated because they now know there is financial support out there” said Matutu. Xolani Koko school principal thanked TETA on behalf of the school and 31 grade twelve pupils saying, “I hope not even one of you will fail this year and also wished all the learners happy summer holidays and prosperous new year”.

Entertainment Doctor’s wrong prescription An old woman came into her doctor's office and confessed to an embarrassing problem. "I fart all the time, Doctor Johnson, but they're soundless, and they have no odour. In fact, since I've been here, I've farted no less than twenty times. What can I do?" "Here's a prescription, Mrs. Harris. Take these pills three times a day for seven days and come back and see me in a week."

Next week an upset Mrs. Harris marched into Dr. Johnson's office. "Doctor, I don't know what was in those pills, but the problem is worse! I'm farting just as much, but now they smell terrible! What do you have to say for yourself?". "Calm down, Mrs. Harris," said the doctor soothingly. "Now that we've fixed your sinuses, we'll work on your hearing."

I am just pulling the schooling thing like a donkey pulling a cart. My honie, I am missing you very much right now, my heart is perambulating with every word that I write, if it was not for these oceans that decided to flow between us then I would get on the next bus to come and see you, but until then I know that I will not hesitate to put this blue blood on this paper and write to you. I remember that day lovie, that one sweet day as Maria Carey sanged it, you know that it is my favourite song honie. The one day that we were boarding the transport and you escorted me to my home, walking with you just brought sweet dreams to me for the rest of my life honie. Elements of Soul Conquers J’burg airwaves By Lwavela Jongilanga

They've been making waves in and around the Johannesburg music scene with their first single All For Your Loving that's currently on high rotation on national radio stations. Elements of Soul comprises of three musically inclined individuals, two males, Aviwe Mpondo, 26, better known as Dj Palture from Phakamisa and Mandilakhe Tengani, 22, better known as Man-D from Forte Beaufort, and one female, Sibusiso Msesiwe, 22, better known as Sibu from Dawn in East London. “We met last year October in East London at Beyonce Records which is the label we are signed under. Man-D and I had been asked to help Dj Palture out with songs he was working on for a solo project. We went in the studio and made magic,” said Sibu. "It's strange because we just clicked when we worked together and things just flowed even though we weren't a group or even planning to be one,” she said. Their debut album Music In Me, which was produced by Dj Palture, is a blend of jazz, soulful house and hints of RnB. It also represents the elements that each one adds to the sound of the group. Late last year the group decided to broaden their horizon by moving to Johannesburg. They blame the slow progress of development and lack of support for their music in the Eastern Cape. "We made the move up to Johannesburg right after we decided to work as a collective. We moved because the chances of us succeeding and being recognised for our music were much higher there than here. We feel our music is more appreciated in other provinces than it is in ours,” said Dj Palture. Two of the band members are quiet familiar with instruments. Sibu is a selftaught pianist and is the lead vocalist and Man-D plays bass guitar and piano. "I remember being a six-year-old at school and I'd sit next to the piano teacher just to listen to her play. I play by ear and started out by playing nursery rhymes and then progressed to a point whereby today I can listen to a song and then play it,” said Sibu. The trio believes they represent the youth of this country, the youth that is disadvantaged and hopeless. "We want to inspire and give hope to young people, and let them know that all is achievable with hard work,” said Dj Palture. The three dream of opening a music academy where they will help people who want to get their foot into the door of the entertainment industry. They believe in the potential of the Eastern Cape and its talent and want to be mentors to those who dream of making it as a musician. – WSU-SNA

WITH MY PEN

by Sithandiwe Velaphi

Zuma set to emerge victorious KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape, one of the ANC’s biggest provinces in terms of membership, have unanimously voted President Jacob Zuma to continue with the second term after the much anticipated ANC national elective conference in Mangaung. Zuma in the two provinces have overwhelmingly beaten his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe by a big margin, undoubtedly. Zuma also received nod in the North West, Free State and the Northern Cape. Msholozi, Zuma’s clan name, is also enjoying support in Limpopo and Western Cape. He has also received unconvincing support in the Gauteng province. Motlanthe on the other side seems to have taken a backside, that of the quiet diplomacy. In an interview with the Business Day he said: “The fact that you hear noises from time to time saying, “You mustn’t stand — you mustn’t do this” and so on, there is no appetite for elections. Elections in an organisation are an instrument for strengthening the organisation, not weakening it — but that’s only when it works and people accept it for what it is. I don’t want to lead an organisation where I have no

It is unclear if Motlanthe would stand against Zuma. It is unclear also if Motlanthe would loose his position as ANC deputy president. If Motlanthe accepts to stand against Zuma and looses, he will loose his position as deputy and eventually as the country’s.

sense of what the members think of me, and by arrangement. I would never do that. That is why it’s important that their assessment of you and the expression of their will must not be interfered with. Once it’s interfered with, if I offered them sweeteners or jobs, I would never actually know whether they had confidence in me or not.” It is unclear if Motlanthe would stand against Zuma. It is unclear also if Motlanthe would loose his position as ANC deputy president. If Motlanthe accepts to stand against Zuma and looses, he will loose his position as deputy and eventually as the country’s. This is because ANC heavyweight and businessman, Cyril Ramaphosa, have received an overwhelming votes from ANC members pushing for Zuma’s second term. But one thing we have to note is that a second term is not the sin in the movement and that ANC members pushing for Motlanthe’s presidency have shown signs of immature and doubted stances on the culture and traditions of the ANC. They have accused Zuma of lacking leadership crisis. They campaigned on the Marikana incidents, the Limpopo book crisis and subsequently the demolitions in Lenasia. They played the man (Zuma) and not the ball (real issues). They vehemently forgot that their favourites Motlanthe, Tokyo Sexwale (Human Settlements minister), Paul Mashatile (Arts and Culture minister) and Thandi Modise (North West Premier) are part of South Africa’s predicaments. They used all sorts of unfair statements to tarnish the image of Zuma and his administration. On the other side, Zuma, kept quiet and continued with his work. He even left an important meeting organised by Southern African Develop-

ment Community in Maputo, Mozambique, to attend to the Marikana crisis. Any leader who does not care can decide to enjoy the luxury of hotels in Maputo and come back after the conclusion of the meeting. Any leader who does not care should have instructed officials on ways to end the deadly strike, which left 44 people dead, and continue sipping the wine and expensive drinks at the helm of the meeting. Zuma never did that. He left the meeting to attend to the problem. Speaking to the SABC News recently, Zuma President Jacob Zuma said South Africa is a country at work and challenges that keep resurfacing are being addressed. The president also calmed fears post Mangaung that the country would continue functioning as normal. If I were to advise those that have been, and still are, supporting Motlanthe, I would told them to respect the democratic processes of the ANC and keep engaging the party on all forms of problems that they feel are surfacing. I would also tell them that Motlanthe’s tenure as ANC will once come and they should just wait. I would also tell them that creating divisions and tarnishing the image of the current leadership will not help. I would also tell them that they should not forget that the ANC is still opened for robust debates than the unfair and amateurish style of debates they have shown. The time of the unit in the ANC is needed. The time for consensus in the ANC is needed. Time for factionalism and jostling for power is not needed. Time for power mongering and the use of state machinery for influence is destructive and is not needed. Time for individual worship is equally to destroying the future of the ANC. A strong and united ANC is what is needed.

Mthatha Stadium officially opened SITHANDIWE VELAPHI

MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Xoliswa Tom, officially opened the Mthatha Multi-Purpose Stadium on December 06. Department’s spokesperson Manzi Vabaza said they had provided a grant funding in the amount of R225m to the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Municipality to help develop a Multi-Purpose stadium of international standards. “Construction of the stadium was started with earthworks in July 2008 and completed in February 2009. Phase 2 was provisionally completed in 2010, but due to structural defects that were spotted by the engineers, the stadium was not fit for use by communities and hence repair works had to ensue. With strong collaboration between our department and the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Municipality, final construction of the second phase of the stadium was completed in 2012. This phase includes the Football Pitch, Main Stand, Change Rooms, Ablution Facilities, Offices with furniture and some paving works,” Vabaza told Ikamva LaseGcuwa. The opening of the stadium coincided with the third South African Local Government Association Eastern Cape Municipal Games which took place in the first week of December. “The SALGA Municipal games are a way of promoting the role of sport in developmental local government agenda. The opening games were played at the stadium,” added Vabaza.
