LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL

LONDON CALLING I

t is the 24-hour city, the city where the sun never sets and where every idea, however strange, becomes reality. Recently, the city saw the opening of “The Bunyadi”, the first restaurant that takes a primordial approach to eating food, with completely naked diners and clay plates. The city is also the location of the world’s first experiment in 3D catering, the Food Ink pop-up restaurant, where everything is created by three-dimensional printers, from chairs to tables and from appetizers to dessert. And it is here in London that the London Design Festival will be held from 17 to 25 September: the highlyanticipated event that attracts visitors and enthusiasts from around the world and aims to exceed the 2015 record of 375,000 people from over 75 countries. “This year’s theme,” reveals the director of the event, Ben Evans, “is Future Living, the ideas and materials that will change the way we live.” British designer Asif Khan communicates and represents the future with a large installation: an engaging, hybrid environment, where urban and domestic, as well as private and public merge to create shared, convivial spaces. There 4 IFDM London On Design

are many new additions at the 2016 edition, the first to be organized since the “Brexit” vote: Kensington Olympia’s Pillar and Upper Pillar Halls are hosting the debut of LuxuryMade, a new brand show dedicated to outstanding interior solutions with a selection of brands including Lasvit, Cassina, Poltrona Frau and Zimmer & Rohde. Another major development sees designjunction moving to a new, vibrant “home” in King’s Cross, with a packed schedule of displays, design exhibitions, retail experiences and workshops on the theme of Immersed in Design. In addition, many other side-events will contribute to make the British design week unique, animating the lively, colourful London streets: the events in Chelsea and Clerkenwell, Decorex International at Syon Park, 100% Design at Olympia London and the London Fair, which unites Tent London and Super Brands London under one umbrella at the Truman Brewery in East London. In the following pages of this special edition we will explore in depth several events, providing readers with an essential guide to enjoying the London Design Festival at its best.

INTERVIEW WITH BEN EVANS DIRECTOR OF LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL

What are the proposals for this year? Wath the main theme and events? One of the major themes this year is Future Living, exploring concepts and materials that will play a part in how we live in the future. For our project with MINI, London designer Asif Khan will be creating an immersive environment and sharing platform in the city which explores the next step of third place-architecture. By embracing the overlap between private and public, work and play, Mini Living will provide a network of innovative spaces between the home and the city, reinventing the traditional domestic space into places that allow us to live in new collective ways. Other projects exploring the theme of Future Living include Electro Craft and The Smile which show how cutting edge techniques can be used with traditional materials to provide new solutions. For a week, London will be the capital of design. How many people are you waiting for? From which countries? The London Design Festival is now a key event in the London and international design calendars, taking place across the city every September. One of the most influential events of its kind in the world, in 2015 it boasted a programme of 417 events staged by over 300 partner organisations. Of these, 100 were partners taking part in the Festival for the first time. Festival audiences were significant, with an estimated direct audience of over 375,000 people from over 75 countries. London is the city where all trends born. As a fair, how do you keep the international leadership? Our focus is being about ideas. We have tried to build a reputation as an event that

offers experimentation and cross fertilisation. We are lucky that London is a city that is home to a broad international design community and excells in many different design disciplines. That mix of influences is the key factor in London’s success.

Arper furnishes London. During design week, the brand will have a widespread presence in the city: in the Clerkenwell showroom with all its latest products, at the Designjunction café with the colored Juno chairs, in the Bloggers Lounge of 100% Design, a work station for the press and bloggers, with the highly colourful Pix poufs, the Cross table and the Duna chairs.

Finally, do you think that “Brexit events” wil have consequences for the London furniture trade? We are all worried about the impact of Brexit on the ongoing success of the design sector. The industry works with brands and manufacturers across Europe and full access to that market is critical. Design is borderless and if the conditions are too difficult, designers will quickly move elsewhere to live and work. Talent is everything to the sector. London must stay open and the Mayor has recently launched a campaign called “London is Open” to support that idea. London voted strongly to remain in the EU and the creative sector overwhelmingly so. Our future depends on staying European.

The centrepiece of the installation is Gender by Patricia Urquiola, the chair that takes its name from its ability to change gender through different colors and materials. The chair goes beyond the concept of male/female: it can be alternately strong or delicate, understated or eccentric. The brand will be present at LuxuryMade with an exhibition space. 6

DESIGN WITHOUT BORDERS THE THRIVING BRITISH FURNITURE AND DESIGN INDUSTRY IS CURRENTLY EMBROILED IN THE UNCERTAINTY TRIGGERED BY BREXIT, WITH DESIGNERS AND CREATIVES RESPONDING BY DRAWING UP A MANIFESTO TO STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE OF PEOPLE, IDEAS AND PRODUCTS.

W

hat exactly the consequences of Brexit on the furniture, design and creative sectors of Great Britain will look like is anyone’s guess. The climate is one of uncertainty as the country waits to see what form the UK’s political and economic relationship with the European Union will take. According to the media, designers and creatives were shocked at the referendum result. Dezeen, for example, reported that around 95% of designers and creatives voted to remain in the EU. In their eyes, there should be as few boundaries as possible on creativity, talent, culture and ideas – in fact, they believe that it is the free circulation of people and products that stimulates these. The swift reaction of the UK design world – especially in London, where many EU professionals and brands are based – was to produce a manifesto calling for the government to defend at least some of the main EU regulations seen as fundamental for the future of the industry, such as the ability to freely hire talented designers from across the Channel. The manifesto also wants the UK to adopt the EU’s laws on intellectual property and support training programmes based on the exchange of students of different nationalities. The mood may be one of disappointment and worry, 8 IFDM London On Design

but many furniture and design professionals say they are prepared to face up to the new situation and adapt. There is also a feeling that, having bounced back from the depths of the economic crisis, challenges are part and parcel of life in the industry and sometimes carry with them new opportunities. Another group who greeted the referendum result with dismay was the Millennials, who voted overwhelming to Remain. They have been painted as the real losers in the debate, exposing a gaping divide between the digital generation and older people. The British furniture industry seems set for a transitional period, then. Yet it comes after several positive results were recorded in 2015. The value of the furniture manufacturing industry surpassed the £8bn mark, an increase of 4.6% on the previous year, according to data from the British Furniture Manufacturer (BFM). Imports also increased to nearly £6bn, an 8% increase on 2014, with China accounting for almost a third of the total. Meanwhile, exports shot up by 6%, thanks largely to the United States. The sector shows no sign of crumbling. And it is resolutely determined not to lose the benefits of economic, cultural and human exchange with other EU countries, despite the complex and uncertain post-Brexit reality.

We will occupy four locations into a mini design city with different social quarters for eating and drinking, entertainment, exhibitions, business and pleasure. What about the exhibitors? An interesting mix of furniture and accessories brands from Scandinavian brands such as Design House Stockholm, Icons of Denmark, string to some of Britain’s bestloved brands Isokon, Modus, Bethan Gray

and Deadgood. There are independent designers, the best in lighting, fashion, jewellery, ceramics and books. The best temporary exhibitions and events? The King’s Cross Creative Quarter (KXCQ), a partnership with the Knowledge Quarter and King’s Cross Development. KXCQ brings together restaurants, hotels, architectural landmarks, cultural institutions... for a four-day event. Highlights: Indian Design Platform at the Guardian building.

Wich differences between London and NY edition? Over the past few years we have taken satellite editions of the show to key design cities globally. We have an international audience, so it’s important to take the exhibition to other territories. It also gives our British brands the opportunity to target new markets. Typically, we showcase just 30 brands, but in London we take over larger, with more than 200 brands alongside large-scale installations, pop-up shops...

SPOTLIGHT LONDON DESIGN FAIR

 22-25 SEPTEMBER  OLD TRUMAN BREWERY  www.londondesignfair.co.uk Tent London and Super Brands London join forces for a big new fair: the London Design Fair. Over 450 exhibitors from 29 countries at the Old Truman Brewery in East London, showcasing independent designers, established brands and pavilions dedicated to different countries. The event attracts over 25,000 professionals ranging from buyers, architects, interior designers, press and the general public at the weekend. INTERVIEW WITH JIMMY MACDONALD

DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF LONDON DESIGN FAIR

In 2016, Tent London and sister event Super Brands London will return to Truman Brewery in East London under the new umbrella of London Design Fair. What are the news for the visitors? Brands London have nurtured the sole aim to provide London’s most ambitious and pertinent design trade fairs - And fulfilling this aim on every occasion over the past ten years. It’s is now time to combine brand and function and present the new “London Design Fair”, a name that in part draws inspiration from Europe, a region where we carry out a great deal of business and where ‘Fair’ is a familiar term. The London Design Fair is an umbrella brand for Tent London and Super Brands London alongside the other shows we host, for example 100% Norway and the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland. With the addition of the third floor space at the Old Truman Brewery, we will be hosting further group shows, country pavilions and themed exhibitions, affording these key facets even greater visibility. 20 IFDM London On Design

450 exhibitors from 29 countries, including independent designers, established brands, international country pavilions, and galleries. Can you tell us some previews? We’re pleased to be launching the British Craft Pavilion this year - a showcase of 25 craftspeople from across the British Isles. These designers were specially selected by the Crafts Council & the Fair to represent the best of British craft and innovation. It seemed obvious to examine where Britain is in the worldwide craft movement, and we were delighted when the Crafts Council came our way because it gave us the opportunity to visit that component in our show. We’re excited to have our first guest nation in the form of This is India, curated by Spandana Gopal of Tiipoi; and the space is being designed by Kangan Arora. We’re really pleased to have Indelust supporting talented designers like Claymen and Taama. And as always, we will be showcasing emerging talents. Designers such as Troels Flensted and ‘out for space’ are true material innovators. ‘We were invited to propose a project by the trade commission of the Trentino region of Italy,’ you said. Can you better explain the collaboration? Trentino Collaborations is all about connecting four British designers with four Trentinobased manufacturers to create new products for retail. The point is to create a profitable

exchange – both artistically and economically. Max Lamb is using the expertise of Pedretti Graniti to produce granite furniture, intent on beautifying the medium. Sebastian Cox is working with Arte Del Legno to produce furniture from local hardwood, alongside weaving techniques from Trentino. Lucy Kurrein is designing leather upholstery, inspired by leather household objects, with help from Molinari Design, and Giles Miller will take his first foray into natural stone tiles with Euro Porfidi. This is a significant project to launch in our 10th year because its core – connecting designers with manufacturers – is something we’ve always done. Relationships are fundamental to us. What makes a successful design fair? In 10 years at the heart of London Design Festival, Tent London has shown that it’s about more than designers’ work. It’s about creating an inspiring experience for 25,000 attendees as well as concrete, career-defining possibilities for exhibitors. It’s having an instinct for quality. London Design Fair is made from equal parts curation, collaboration and connections. We stand out as a Fair because we understand the design industry and we are passionate about it. We work hard to create content you won’t see anywhere else. London Design Fair will be an inspiring and useful experience for everyone who exhibits and attends.

HOSPITALITY ACCORDING TO SLEEP Some hotels are as good as your own home, or even better. They offer comfort, unique sensory experiences and bespoke rooms, because no two clients are the same. This is sure to be one of the main topics of discussion at Sleep, the biggest hotel design and architecture event in Europe taking place at London’s Business Design Centre on 22 and 23 November. This year’s theme is The Science of Tribes, which classifies people according to personality, aesthetic preferences and lifestyle. Using this analysis, Sleep will explore new ways of reinventing the concept of the hotel, to leave increasingly demanding clients satisfied and stunned. It’s an event that no architect, construction firm, designer or industry professional will want to miss, with conferences, exhibitions and a huge display area populated not just by big brands, but also artisans and up-and-coming talent.
