Architect

Why Me I have just recently fulfilled my first degree in the Department of Architectural Engineering in Democritus University of Thrace (Xanthi), as well as my compulsory six months internship in Studio 75 Architects in Athens. I always had a passion to fulfill my goals with the quickest and most efficient way. The study of mechanics and materials needed for every basic structure contributed so that I realize the functional and practical aspects in Architecture and how to use my knowledge and

fantasy to create any kind of project. I am planning to enrich this knowledge, as well as my imagination while studying for a second degree in Europe. This way I could experience new approaches through team work and I look forward to bring my architectural design to a new level. I look forward to work with recognized Academics and other students from all over the world to enrich my abilities.

Project 1: Center for environmental awareness in Nestos River (Architecture and Landscape)

Author: Gkaidatzi Lydia-Despina, Klitsinikou Elli, Koutani Iliana Educational institution: Democritus University of Thrace Date of the project (month/year): June 2013 (4th Semester) “Architecture and Landscape” Course integrates knowledge and techniques both from landscape and architectural synthesis. All these are combined to formulate an architectural design, conceived as continually modulated by the spatial dynamics and characteristics of the existing place. The understanding of the landscape is achieved, by designing structures that “grow” without exhausting the selected site in each case, but indeed by creating the conditions for coexistence and integration as “there have always been there.” The place, thus, operates as a platform for design and inventing specific installations. With this approach users and constructions are the link between the idea and the physical reality and at the same time the catalyst for the creation of space. The role of architecture is not confined to the object itself (construction), but it also extends to the “potential space”, generated around the object, by the action of the subject.

Project 1: Center for environmental awareness in Nestos River (Architecture and Landscape) Addresses: This is a small information center, located on the path along Nestos River, between the cities of Kavala and Xanthi. It’s a pure and unpolluted area, where very specific regulations about constructions exist, in order to protect wild life and nature. This specific project addresses to a wide audience from small children to elderly and has as its purpose, to inform the public about environmental actions that take place in the area, to host small exhibitions and to function as an observatory for the wild life.

Façades:

South-West Façade

Main Façade

North-East Façade

Documentation of context & Incorporation in the urban scale:

The structure consists of four levels, with different functions, where three of them intended for the public, while the fourth is mainly for the guard of the observatory. At the upper level of the structure is a small residence of the guard, which concludes all the basics for a semi-permanent stay, with sleeping and bathroom area, and a great view of the river and the mountains, created by the use of glass in the façade. At the level of the path (Level +0.00) there is an information site on the river Nestos, which could function also as showroom. At the two lower levels, there are also information and exhibition spaces. The first of the lower levels hosts a little refreshment area, while the second is ideal for strolling and glancing into the landscape, and also during the summer months could be a starting point for the visitors who want to try the canoe-kayak, as it located as close possible to the water. It was of great importance the integration of the construction into the landscape. To achieve this a metal frame with the smallest possible diameter was used and veneer sheets combined with glass to fill the façades. 6

Project 1: Center for environmental awareness in Nestos River (Architecture and Landscape) Architectonic solution:

The structural support is achieved by anchoring the rock and also underground, with supports in the ground under water. The frame has been designed based on a grid with dimensions 2.70 * 2.70 * 2.50 m, and looks like fends off and afterwards return to the rock, creating a type of internal atrium. As a team we liked the idea of a path that goes up and down, creating shapes above water, framing the views with paneling in contact with the environment, with the smallest possible volume to integrate better in its surroundings.

Project 1: Center for environmental awareness in Nestos River (Architecture and Landscape) Report: A small observation and information unit, which could easily be multiplied, had

a great connection with the natural surroundings, creates specialized views using wood and glass paneling and contains everything that a visitor would need to appreciate the land. Also provides a small space for residency, in order to be maintained. About dividing the tasks, the whole team contributed to develop the main idea for the floor plan. I personally have been involved mainly in the creation of the three dimensional canvas that we use to create the spaces and also in the processing of the main faรงade. Technical aspects: The structure was created using the minimum dimensions required for stair, hallways, and heated areas in order to achieve the smallest possible volume to not disturb the natural environment. It will be mainly used during spring and summer, when the weather conditions are ideal to approach the river and get a clear view of the landscape. Steel beams and columns, 0.20*0.20 m were used for the support, combined with cement foundations, at the bottom of the river, and steel anchoring on the rock.

Project 2: Module Chair (Visual and Plastic Approaches to Space) Concept Drawings

Author: Koutani Iliana Educational institution: Democritus University of Thrace Date of the project (month/year): February 2014 (5th Semester) Report: The original idea was to design a rocking chair, as a one-piece structure in contrast with classical armchairs with both feet. Inspiration for the form of this chair could be a banana, while the framing is based on traditional furniture constructions with bamboo or woven reeds. This armchair is low, with seat height at 17 cm, about as much as one pillow, and it is back, “embraces” the entire body of the person sitting. The overall height is 95 cm and the seat depth is 40 cm. The frame consists of two types of pieces that are connected together using slots. Eight pieces of the type I and fifteen pieces of type II (the two types are shown as details in the drawings) were used. Each piece of both types have slightly different dimensions, depending on where it is placed. The calculation of the dimensions for the pieces, was based in the anthropometric measurements, and the chair was tested in a three-dimensional simulation with Google Sketch Up in order to withstand the weight of a person and to provide proper support. The connections were made based on modern furniture constructions of «plywood» and the notches were calculated so as to create the desired curve. Therefore ideal material for this construction can be considered the pressurized timber. Furthermore, the plan could be changed to be made of a metal. The frame can be coated with fabric, or even to filled s with various elements, such as Plexiglas.

Project 3: Museum for the city of Xanthi (Architectural Design, Special Buildings III, IV) Author: Karampekir Aise, Klitsinikou Elli, Koutani Iliana, Siantou Revekka

Educational institution: Democritus University of Thrace Date of the project (month/year): June 2015, (5th-6th Semester) The overall objective of the course is to introduce and familiarize the students with more complex considerations and a variety of parameters. It seeks, in particular, to address complex building program with specific functional requirements, exploring integration issues, the dipole correlation as structured-outdoor space and place-character, exploring links between the architectural work and the social environment, the investigation of the synthetic relationship and structure, clarification of architectural character, giving effect to the design concept and embody the central idea of an architectural project. Main objective of the course is the reduction of the above into one integrated -from operating side, meaning and importance - building complex, which will produce reference, describing the surroundings and at the same time restoring links with the wider environment. The complexity and the size of the project led to the choice of four member working teams. Museum for the city of Xanthi, was the last special building program that has been processed and was also the most complicated. Specifically in this project exhibition spaces, an auditorium, workshops, a library, children workshops administration offices and recreation area were combined, following all the architectural, structural, electrical and mechanical regulations, as well as the specified dimensions that were given for each area.

Project 3: Museum for the city of Xanthi (Architectural Design, Special Buildings III, IV) Addresses - Documentation of context:

The Museum Complex should function as a cultural pole for the city of Xanthi. I addresses to a wide audience, especially to the residents of all ages that could through it to learn about the history of the city, and also is the working environment for many specialties from researchers and teachers to administrative stuff and engineers. Except from the exhibition areas, temporary and permanent, includes spaces for conferences and small cultural productions, recreation with the cafÊ and restaurant, which have excellent view to the mountain and the city, as well as a special educational area for children and students, where many activities about history and science could take place. Incorporation in the urban scale: The plot is situated near the central square of the city. The surrounding area is pedestrianized with many small sitting areas, a small open air amphitheater, an open air gymnasium and a playing area for little children. With this architectural solution the square is incorporated into the building, creating an atrium with north-east access through the pilotis and south-west access with stairs that lead from the pedestrian area to the atrium and the main entrance of the museum. The surrounding buildings are mainly three store constructions and for these reason the height of the complex does not surpasses the 11 meters. This way we manage to have a view of the city without interrupting the views F of the existing buildings. Also a because the Museum is situated into an urban park we deç cide to make a semi-transparSouth West a ent construction, which does not interrupt the landscape, d but could work as a monument, e while the visitors could have glances to the exhibition area, s when they pass by.

Project 3: Museum for the city of Xanthi (Architectural Design, Special Buildings III, IV) Architectonic solution:

The Museum Complex consists of three over ground levels and basement. The structure spreads into the plot creating a central atrium yard. In the basement were situated electrical and mechanical facilities, parking, storages and a space for the guards. Ground zero’s east wink hosts the start of the main exhibition, which continues upstairs using a ramp stair to enhance the stroll. Also behind the exhibition are situated the laboratory workshops with a specified outside work area as well, and next to them is the event hall-auditorium. The west wink is for the administration, library and the educational area, which has workshops for children. On the first floor, in separate buildings are in the west the temporary exhibition area, while east the permanent exhibition continues to its first loft. On the top of the pilotis entrance, contacting with the temporary exhibition space is the recreation area, with a café and small restaurant. On the second floor the permanent exhibition continues into a second L loft that stands above the auditorium and the entrance. Also an architectural couloir on pilotis a is added as an ending to extent the views from y + 0.00 the ramp stair.

Project 3: Museum for the city of Xanthi (Architectural Design, Special Buildings III, IV) Report:

This project is the finalized work of two semesters, during which studies for all construction and architectural aspects were performed, e.g. lighting and shading, earthquake durability. Working with a team of four, we worked together to construct the main idea and shapes and afterwards we divided the areas, that needed to be designed and detailed. Afterward for the final presentation and visualization, all of us worked for the construction of the model. I worked particularly to create the 3d Model and the renderings, using ArchiCAD and Artlantis. Technical aspects: The Museum for the City of Xanthi is a complicated structure with multiple stores, with different dimensions, bigger than the usual. That was the reason a structural canvas has been used from the beginning of the design process. In this case is a concrete structure with a Zoelner slab, which integrates the beams into, columns and in some places structural walls to hold the lofts and the greater openings. All the areas, exhibitions and working spaces, are accessible for people with mobility limitations with two elevators. The Laboratory Workshops as well as the Educational Workshops have private Entrances, so that could be used after the operating ours. These rooms have also unlimited access to a yard for out-door activities. The exhibition areas are semi-transparent, and to provide the needed shading for the exhibits aluminum blinds were utilized.

Project 4: Architectural & Landscape Interventions in the Coal Mines of Ptolemaida

(Diploma Design Thesis Project)

Author: Koutani Iliana, Mpaltzi Anna Educational institution: Democritus University of Thrace Date of the project (month/year): November 2016 (Diploma Design Thesis Project)

A b s t r a c t

The theme for the Diploma Project was chosen after a visit to the lignite mines area, where it was realized the extent of human intervention in nature and the lack of ideas for exploiting the most damaged area after the coal exploitation. The goal was originally the creation of an open air theme museum park for coal, which gradually evolved as an idea and expanded with the addition of other uses. This is a future project, with starting date about 10 years from today because of the necessary actions that must take place after the exploitation in order to ensure the quality of the environment. The main objective after the intervention is to create a living pole near the entrance of the city. In addition, the area will be a recovery model for mining regions, particularly featuring two types of interventions: 1. Creation of a new habitat with plantings and the conversion of the pit to a lake for water activities, 2. Maintenance of the excavated landscape, so it could be accessible and not harmful for human and natural life of the area and preservation as a memory element with added uses, like a mountain bike track, a camping site and cultural facilities in and around the pit. The proposal uses both of these types, combined with moves from one recovery zone to another in order to highlight them both, creating a memory theme park about the history and the exoloitation of coal in the area combined with modern facilities that can improve the area aftewards. 14

Project 4: Architectural & Landscape Interventions in the Coal Mines of Ptolemaida

(Diploma Design Thesis Project)

Location in the surrounding area

The two pits are close to the city of Ptolemais, owned mine Mavropigi especially in the Main Field. This is one of the first parts of the region operated by DEI as mine and as it has mostly surface lignite has scooped a very great depth. The plot is: • 6 km from Ptolemaida • 2 km from the Proastio • 4 km from Mavropigi (abandoned settlement) • 20 km from Kozani. Furthermore there is easy access to it through the Egnatia highway.

Time framework for implementation

The study and implementation time in this case differs from the actual time. Due to the nature and human activities in the region, the study is to be applied in about 10 years. Specifically the two pits of the study area are currently in operation and it is expected they must be completed within the next five years. Before their disposal for any other use (e.g. crops) soil remediation is required, which can last from 1 to 3 years, depending on the needs of the future use and deterioration of soil from exploitation of the mineral. Therefore we as implementing body of our study in 2026, considering that this part of the mine will no longer be utilized for ore production by 2021 and the following five years will be devoted to studies and remediation applications and soil remediation. During this project the required specifications and factors for water and soil remediation where studied specifically for the needs of this particular intervention in collaboration with envirromental engineers.

M a s t e r p l a n

(Diploma Design Thesis Project)

The decisions for this proposal were in majority taken jointly and in collaboration with our professors. My colleague and I conducted environmental, structural and architectural project studies in order to finalize our intervention plan. Concerning the design and model work we literally divide the work, and I made the basis for the three dimensional model, while Anna added the materials, and together we created the renderings using mixed programs, like V-Ray, Lumion, Photoshop. We have also made three scale models, in scales 1:2000 (masterplan), 1:500 (section), 1:50 (pavilion). Scale1:50
