the FASHION & STYLING ISSUE
FROM THE EDITOR “Fashion you can buy, but style you posess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There’s no how-to road map to style. It’s about self expression and, above all, attitude.” – Iris Apfel, Fashion Icon & Interior Designer

“Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.” – Marc Jacobs, Fashion Designer
Fall is all about Fashion & Styling in the I Like Her Style Vancouver world and this topic sends me off to another universe in excitement! Fashion has been a part of my DNA since birth (in my opinion). When I was old enough to explore style, the experiment began... and has yet to end!
I have been called ‘stylish’ for most of my life, especially in my adult years, but the meaning of style has evolved for me over time. It is beyond the physical elements of your outfit or of your home decor, it is the story behind it all. Each piece has a place in the story - your style story! And if it doesn’t, I challenge everyone to dig deeper and understand that self-expression through style has the power to convey a message. Fashion is a language without words, and style is the story! As I flip through the pages of this fall issue, reflecting on the experience of creating it and bringing my visions to life as the Editor, one surprising word comes to mind that isn’t typically associated with Fashion & Styling – TRUST! I realize the women that I worked with in the magazine put their trust in me and gave me the creative freedom to do the work I love. And not only them – I had to trust in myself that I could accomplish what I was set out to do. I am feeling immense gratitude for all these amazing local women who invited me into their lives to foster the expression of style and transcend it onto these pages for you, the readers, to feel inspired in your own lifestyle journey. I am one lucky lady and I cherish every moment! Our Cover Story – having been invited into the home of the Little White House & Co. boutique owner Cheryl Krecsy along with daughter Natasha Isaak – sets the tone for an epic style story. From her business to her personal life, and from her wardrobe to her home décor style... there is beauty in all things Cheryl does. Dressed in all white, her life is far from a blank canvas and her soulful style is an inspiration! As a personal stylist, my heart skipped a beat when presented with two amazing projects featured in this issue – coordinating & styling the Urban Looks Fashion Show at Central City and creating a Fall Style Feature with the amazing shopping destination of South Granville. Both required me to explore the boutiques and be inspired to create a fashion narrative. While on South Granville, I discovered there’s always something to surprise, entertain, and delight you in that vibrant neighbourhood, so bringing on artist Karlie Rosin to add fashion illustrations to their feature seemed like the perfect fit!
My personal style story with this look is 'A Gal on a Mission' – a mission to make a bold statement, all while embracing the flexibility needed to conquer both my dreams and my day. This look combines structured pieces with flowing accents and carefree accessories. Whenever possible, I love to shop and support local boutiques. The bracelet was found at Su Casa Spa, the kimono and earrings are from The Latest Scoop, the backpack is from Boutique Blanche and my ring is from Fine Finds Boutique.
Beauty for fall is explored by our very own Co-founder & Creative Director, Kyla Getty, as she shares her go to looks this season. Contributor, Codi Lynn, fuels our fall hairstyle inspo with a braid tutorial. To say we have some powerhouse women in fashion featured this season is an understatement! Tara Teng of Justly Market & Mel Pederson of Free Reign are trendsetters in their own right beyond the clothes on their backs, way beyond! Nira Arora, our Hot List Contributor, takes us to Guildford Mall where she shares what we will find in her shopping bags this fall. In true ILHSV fashion, we touch on styling your life from all angles – Relationship Project answers some juicy questions about the love lives of our readers and life coach, Lisa Michaud, sheds some light on the reality that being broke is never in style! We're also sharing features with Sandy Gibson, Iulia Agnew & Sandra Jimenez. Each and every story shared in this issue is so unique and personal and with that in mind I wish for you all to uncover your story, find your style match, and express the heck out of it! Style with Soul to Empower – that’s the name of our game! @ilikeherstylevancouver | FA LL 2018

DOUBLE PAGEANT VICTORY FOR TAYLOR ALLER
(We like her style!)
We first met Taylor Aller last year when she was nominated for (and won) our I Like Her Story feature contest. This self-proclaimed multi-potentialite and co-founder of Relationship Project stole our hearts and has become an honorary member of our sisterhood as an official ILHSV contributor alongside her husband and 'other half' to Relationship Project, Jake. When she approached
In one round, contestants had to dress to represent their sponsor. Taylor created this skirt from magazine pages to represent I Like Her Style Vancouver!
us in the Spring about her mission to run in the Mrs. BC pageant with minimal makeup, hair and glam to make a statement that women can be beautiful and powerful just as they are, we knew we wanted to support her and were only too happy to jump in as her lead sponsor. Taylor shares her journey: Going into this pageant with minimal makeup and hair, I was nervous. I’m not immune to the comparison game. As much as I’m an advocate for body positivity, I struggle with it too. Knowing I was going into a beauty pageant just as me, sent a lot of my insecurities wailing. I also didn’t want to offend anyone, I love playing with makeup and fancy hair! But, I wanted to walk the talk. We are more than what we look like. We are enough. This pageant wasn’t like others. They focus on what’s on the inside. Self-development workshops, leadership panel talks, and the quality of women who were there — all this made it clear this was something of calibre. The women involved were so positive and encouraging. Being able to do this my way and be welcomed, encouraged, and celebrated, was amazing. Knowing that I had the support of my sponsors in this mission, too? It was more than I could’ve asked for. I left with two titles, yes. But what I’m most happy about leaving with? The relationships made with other incredible women, furthering this mission and the connection to myself. I’m so looking forward to reigning this year as Mrs. BC and Miss Congeniality 2018-2019 alongside incredible friends and titleholders. I'm looking forward to furthering the message that 'we are enough' with the new opportunities this platform will bring and to continuing my volunteer work in the community promoting social media literacy with Free To Be Talks. I'm beginning by hosting a Makeup Free Evening of Empowerment in partnership and raising funds for RAW Beauty Talks and my beloved Free To Be Talks, the first of many initiatives I hope to take on this year.
See Taylor and Jake's Relationship Project Contribution, Page 47
My hope is that through community, empathy, and challenging the norm we can all start shifting the negative messages we’re bombarded with everyday and have the louder, “We are enough” message shine through. Are ya with me? Photography: Diana Battung

creative mind behind Little White House & Co. in historic Fort Langley. Operated along with her daughter, Natasha Isaak, LWH is a nostalgic lifestyle boutique celebrating fashion, decor and gifts blended with a salon café which hosts guests to Parisian-inspired faire and high tea. It's a charming space and a brand with an appreciation for style both old and new.
It's no secret that here at ILHSV, we have always had a special place in our hearts for Little White House & Co. The charming tearoom was the birthplace of our dream – which became the I Like Her Style Vancouver magazine and brand. The inspired space is forever an inspirational haven for us.
Cheryl comes from a 'farm family' - her parents still own a grain farm today in the small, rural area just outside of Winnipeg called Saint Francois Xavier. She spent her teenage years in the city of Winnipeg, later moving to Langenburg, Saskatchewan where she and her childhood sweetheart, Gene, built their first home at the age of 24 years old. Cheryl refers to Gene as the 'love of her life'. Married for 41 years, he has proven to be her perfect match. When we asked Cheryl about Gene, she said, “He has loved me unconditionally over the years and has given me the safe space to find myself, find my natural talents and helped me feel confident enough to go for it… no matter how crazy my ideas have sounded to him! He has helped me every step of the way to fulfill my dreams.” Today, you can find Cheryl’s favourite oasis (quite the contrary to the Canadian Prairie Setting) as she revels in her time away at her little holiday 'pied-a-terre' in Montmartre, Paris, France. There, she steps back into a more romantic time to take in the beauty, the history, the cafes, the food, the shopping, the sights, and gets the creative recharge she needs for her business here at home. Cheryl describes herself as a 'realistic ideas person, who can sometimes fulfill some of her dreams'. To that, we ask – what more amazing dreams do you have in that wonderfully creative mind of yours?

With that in mind, knowing that Cheryl had recently designed and built her dream home – and yes it's white! – we were thrilled to be invited inside! Here we share this intimate tour and a little bit more about the story of this amazing woman's inspiring story of style with soul.
“I’m truly a home-body and family person, my family life and Little White House life is really rolled up into one. I do try and keep the life balance... I have priorities and take the time window when I’m able and do what’s needed, when needed.”
If you were to leave a legacy in this world, what do you want to be remembered for? I am most proud of my children... they are happy, good, strong people who are living life to the fullest and don’t shy away from hard work. They have dreams and go for it!
Describe a time your trusted your gut even if it didn’t seem wise at the time and paid off in the long run. Originally LWH was at the end of Gasoline Alley in 2000. Then, we moved to the Log Cabin on Mavis. I had the long-term goal of owning my own LWH property and when the old Marr House went up for sale in 2006, I knew It was the one. Knowing in your gut it’s the right move is one thing but when people say “no customers are going to walk that far”... you begin to question your vision. I questioned my gut the entire time it took to purchase it, to renovate it and didn’t really breath well for the first three months.
Name the biggest overall lesson you've learned in running your business. My business grew one small step at a time. I learned to not spend money I did not have, to hold onto a big nest egg of cash for those unexpected times, to have a back up plan in your back pocket at all times, to trust your gut, to be open to trusting others even after you have been burned, and to work hard. What are some must have pieces for every woman’s wardrobe this fall? Faux Fur, pleather jackets and vests will be big this fall along with long pleated skirts with the classic white shirt. Midi patterned dresses with sleeves and oversized sweaters... I mean big and somewhat boxy. If you could max out your credit card at any store of your choice and did not have to pay it back, what is the one store you would choose? That’s easy... I’d shop Printemps Department Store in Paris.
Little W hite House & Co.
My vision for Little White House was to create a place for women of all ages to gather... to let all life's worries drift away... to spend a little time on yourself or with a loved one, chit chatting while walking thru the rooms of the old house... doing a little visiting, eating or shopping. It's a place to come home to – a home away from home. Little White House happened. One small idea turned into a bigger idea. As my family grew, so did my business. Our Little White House is an extension of our family. Everyday we welcome our valued guests and hope that they love LWH as much as we do. My daughter, Natasha Isaak, plays a huge role in the business and is the face of the LWH brand. We both continue to have the same vision and if you placed us in a wholesale buyers showroom at different times, we would have selected many of the same items. We work extremely well together and love every moment of it. She has her strengths as I have mine and they come together to create LWH. Natasha wears every LWH hat and I mean every one! She is the General Manager but she has also been the Cook, Pastry Chef, Barista, Bar Tender, Dishwasher, Waitress, Hostess, Cashier, Model, Accountant, Grocery Shopper, Buyer, Stylist, Sales Associate, Laundress, Cleaner, Plumber, Assistant Manager, Manager, Social Media & Marketing, Theft Prevention Officer, Friend... and I’m probably missing something! Natasha truly loves her work and loves our clients. LWH is what it is today because of Natasha.
Are there local women in business who inspire you? The women who inspire us are you both. You are extremely busy yet are so giving of your time and talents... so supportive and encouraging of other women in the community without asking for anything in return. It is because of you, Jody and Kyla, that Natasha and I have become less guarded and more trusting of other women in business. We are honoured to know you and work with you.
Where do you find inspiration to fuel the creativity needed for the growth and everlasting impact of the business you have created? As long as I don’t get caught up in the day to day business dealings and I have the time to just think. Also, just living my life gives me the creative inspiration I need. I do try and block out what other businesses are doing so I can read my own intuition on the direction we should take seasonally. 19

ON FASHION & STYLING Given the blank canvas of a body or a room – it’s all very similar. You start with the biggest pieces first and then do the magic of layering. In a room, you must first decide on the look you wish to achieve: the background, walls and floors. Then, the larger pieces of furniture, the medium sized pieces, rugs, lighting and curtains. Lastly – decorations, plants and flowers. I think the hardest part for most is to decide what one’s overall style is. Once you find this, dressing yourself or a room becomes much easier. It’s really not about the trends, the looks, or what others are doing. Be honest with yourself and find what makes you happy... what fits into your life?
The best style has a story and that bodes true in fashion & your home. For example, my favourite room in our home is our Breakfast Room. Even though we have a Media and Great Room, we seem to watch TV and play with our Grandbabies in this space most. Much like your favourite outfit, I am sure there will be memories attached to those pieces that make it your unique style.
Hayley Hudson @hayleyalicephoto
With our clients' styles always at top of mind when buying, Natasha and I are not the typical buyers. We follow each other in our selections... I pick first or she picks first... then once we both have made our selections we do a review and discard what’s just not right for our clients. It’s important for us to choose and provide pieces that add just the right touch to our clients’ home or wardrobe. I believe black or white classic fashions and home decor will never lose its appeal, and we’ve got you covered in that department…always!
MY PERSONAL STYLE IN BOTH MY DRESS & MY HOME WOULD BE DESCRIBED AS CLASSIC WITH TOUCHES OF VINTAGE AND MODERN... MAINLY IN SHADES OF WHITE, BLACK, BLUSH, GOLDS AND SILVER. THIS IS PROBABLY NO SURPRISE, BUT MY FAVOURITE ICONIC DESIGNER IS COCO CHANEL DURING HER BEGINNING YEARS. I LOVE THE PRETTY MASCULINE LOOK OF MEN’S WHITE DRESS SHIRTS AND ALL BLACK DRESSES FROM SIMPLE TO LACY - OH YES AND SKIRTS! I’M NOT A FAN OF BLUE JEANS... OOPS... DID I SAY THIS OUT LOUD? I DON’T WEAR THEM.
“”
To those women that come into our shop and want to make a change to their look and don’t know where to start, I’ll always recommend starting with the basics in a neutral colour palette and building on that. Purchase a black pant, skirt, dress, sweater and white shirt, then add a blush or nude jacket, white jeans and go from there.
“Most people do not know this... but 80% of all menus are created by men for men. At Little White House, I wished to create a menu for women to be planned and prepared in a home kitchen, like you were coming over to my home for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea.
HELLO LOVELY! Fall is my favourite season and for this spread, the talented Xoey of AX Art and Photographer Iulia Agnew helped me shoot two simple, go-to Fall looks that I'm so in love with. This season, try a loose and wavy side pony, fixed with a polished ribbon and glossy neutral lip. Or, go berry bold like I did on the right with a deep side part and a daring red lip.

Q: what are your musthave nail colours for the fall and holiday season?
Fall felt like the perfect time to give my nails a break from salon tips so I treated myself to a lineup of must-have Fall nail colour options. I can mix, match and create a variety of looks! (May I suggest a glitter polish for a fun accent nail or to layer on a solid colour?) If you're a busy mama like I am, you might not always have time to sit down for a full self-mani. Try painting just one coat at a time coming back to perfect with additional coats at a later time when you have a moment. Rome wasn't built in a day! This takes the pressure of perfection in one sitting and these thinner coats dry much faster so you can get onto other things!
MY MU ST- H AV E L I N E U P: A great 'grayge' - Essie Nail Laquer in 'Mink Muffs'. A creamy sheer blush - Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in 'In The Sheer'. My fave strengthener - Witchcraft 'Rock Solid'. A perfect deep red - Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in 'V-Amplified'. A glamourous glitter - Essie Nail Laquer in 'Summit of Style'. A quick drying nude - Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in 'Buff and Trumble'. A cool-toned rose - Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in 'Beet, Pray, Love.'

We’ve shown how to create this style in pigtails but it would look great in so many different ways — half up, on the side, into a bun, you name it! Practicing first with pig tails is a great way to start when creating styles on yourself as you can clearly see what you are doing with a mirror in front of you. If you are looking for more hair and style inspiration check out my Instagram @creativewifeandjoyfulworker. Feel free to tag me, @mauve.hair.design and @ilikeherstylevancouver when you are creating this look on yourself too! We would love to see how it turns out.
THE STEPS 1. Beginning with curly hair holds the ends of your hair into the braid better so that they don't stick out. 2. Backcomb the back and sides of your hair to add volume before you start. 3. Divide your hair into two sections for pigtails. 4. Start with one pigtail, tying back the other pigtail to keep it out of the way. 5. Pull two sections from each side of your pigtail to the front of your hair and add a small clear elastic, this will rest above the remaining hair.
6. Continue to do this all the way down the length of your pigtail. 7. Once you get to the bottom of your braid fasten with an elastic. 8. Make your braid appear fuller by massaging it from the bottom to the top, pulling pieces of hair to add texture. 9. At this point, you may need to maneuver some of the elastics down to hide between sections 10. Once you have pulled out your sections, as desired, wrap a piece of hair around the last elastic. Leave enough hair after wrapping to place another elastic around both that hair and all remaining hair. Split bottom of braid in two and pull outwards, this will hide your very last elastic underneath the hair wrapped above. Repeat steps on other side of head to complete both pigtails.

THIS WAS SUCH A BRILLIANT OPPORTUNITY TO HOST OUR READERS AND SUPPORTERS TO A RELAXED EVENING OF CONNECTION WITH LIKEMINDED WOMEN.
SERIES
This Summer, the ladies of I Like Her Style Vancouver partnered with the gorgeous Vancouver Club to bring together women of the Lower Mainland for three fun, inviting and inspirational evenings! These eventes were a chance to connect our community of like-minded women who were looking to promote and support each other's businesses.
Taking place on the last Monday of each month, these events were casual evenings to enjoy a glass of wine, take in the stunning downtown views atop The Vancouver Club's rooftop patio, meet the team of ILHSV and connect with local women. Readers, online followers, fans, advertisers, influencers and supporters were welcomed with open arms! These complimentary nights were the perfect hit of motivation on a Monday to get our community inspired to chase their dreams and tackle their big goals throughout those lazy summer days. We were absolutely blown away with all of the incredible feedback we received and are grateful to have brought together so many wonderful women who made successful connections, began new partnerships, closed deals and rekindled old friendships. Our community is a special one and we can’t wait to continue to empower, connect and shine a spotlight on all of the incredible women of Greater Vancouver.

SANDY GIBSON:
ON STYLING, SALES AND EXPERTISE
604.318.0210 hello@sandygibsonrealtor.ca www.sandygibsonrealtor.ca @fortheloveofrealestate604
Sandy Gibson is a Vancouver based realtor working with Oakwyn Realty Downtown Ltd., who has always had a passion for real estate. At a young age, her and her husband bought their first condo which needed work! Their renovations created the perfect space and ignited the desire to flip homes and gain equity. With much success she realized she needed to help others achieve the same goals – she loves being a real estate match maker! What advice do you have for first time home buyers out there? Match yourself up with a realtor you trust as soon as possible. This is what we do on a daily basis and we can help make the process easy and less stressful, especially if you have never embarked on this journey before. And what exactly does the ‘right’ realtor mean? Find a realtor who fits with your personality. After all, you’ll be spending some time together and making some pretty big decisions together! Finding a realtor who is on the same page with communication, work ethic, and the ability to really understand your needs when looking for your next home is extremely important. What makes you unique as a local realtor? My business is almost entirely built on referrals and I completely focus on my relationship with my clients. I’m always available to answer questions and pride myself in keeping my clients in the loop to ensure a smooth transaction, whether I am helping with a purchase or a sale. It’s very important to me that my clients have been well taken care of along the way!
How important is styling one’s home when making a sale? Especially in a softer market, styling your home for the sale is extremely valuable. When a home looks well put together, people can easily picture themselves living in the space and it helps them remember your home vs the many others they viewed that day, which often leads to a quicker sale and generally a higher price. In order to make the greatest impact, which areas would you suggest making a priority when getting your home "stage ready"? People buy homes that they can envision themselves moving into. Focus on the areas where people spend most of their time – the kitchen, and living area.
5 TIPS STYLE YOUR HOME TO SELL 1 DECLUTTER! Start with clearing countertops, thinning out closets, and organizing pantries. Potential buyers tend to look in these areas to see how much storage space there is, and the goal is to make things look as spacious as possible.
2 GET CREATIVE! Stage bedrooms as bedrooms, even if it means
using cardboard boxes, some pillows and a duvet to create a “bed”. People often have trouble envisioning a room without furniture in it, so why not make it easy for them! Move couches along walls rather than placing them in the middle of a room. Breaking up a room makes it appear smaller than it actually is. It’s all about creating space and flow.
3 DE-PERSONALIZE! Take down the family photos and artwork. These are great for you to see, but buyers want to see a home as a neutral space to which they could add their own personal items.
4 BRIGHTEN IT UP! Paint using very light neutral colours to make your home feel more spacious. A few hours of your time and a can of paint will go a long way.
Top 10% of Greater Vancouver Realtors - 2018 Qualified *This communication is not intended to solicit existing listings or agency agreements
5 LET THERE BE LIGHT! Add extra lighting to darker spacesfloorlamps, table lamps and opening up blinds will all help with making your space feel more airy and larger.

FREE REIGN FOUNDER
MEL PEDERSON
Founder of the fashion brand FREE REIGN, Melanie Pederson has a powerful story of triumph and inspiration. Reminding us that there will always be light, the sun will eventually come out and that the moon always shines even amidst the darkness. So how did FREE REIGN come to be? Melanie was in a car-accident 9 days after her son was born in 2014. She had several injuries which she still suffers from that drastically changed her whole world. The inconsistency of days where she felt well enough to function, paired with the number of days where she was bedridden with pain are what made her think of getting into an online business where she could work from bed. Her battle with chronic pain and the erratic sensitive symptoms that it came with made her lean towards soft, moisture wicking and antibacterial fabrics like bamboo. Initially, she was inspired to design empowering graphics shared by her Husband. In her darkest of days, he would leave notes all over the house with encouraging words that helped her immensely. It was then that she truly realized the power of words and the impact they can have on a person. Over the years she has extended this reach with her #nopainfreereign and #makeitreign campaigns to start real conversations and advocate for all “invisible illnesses". You can check out all the stories shared at @makeitreigncampaign 32

What has been one of the most memorable compliments you have received from a client? That FREE REIGN literally saved their life. This person was in a horrible broken place in their life and felt that there was nothing left for them. Shortly after, they discovered FREE REIGN and said that all of our messages spoke to them and encouraged them to keep going. Like, WOW. Ya...I bawled like a baby when I learned of this.

AS A MOM, I WANT MY SON TO KNOW THAT LIFE NEVER GOES THE WAY YOU PLAN – AND THAT’S OKAY! EVERYTHING TRULY HAPPENS FOR A REASON. EMBRACE THE JOURNEY, EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF MOMENTS, BECAUSE THERE WILL ALWAYS BE LIGHT. DO NOT LET HARDSHIPS DEFINE YOU, BUT LET THEM INSPIRE YOU.
FEEL GOOD: OUR FABRICS, THE MESSAGES, THE STYLE + OUR MANUFACTURING PROCESS ALL HAVE TO MAKE US + YOU FEEL GOOD. LOOK GOOD: DO YOU LOOK GOOD IN THIS PIECE? DOES THE MESSAGE ON THIS PIECE MAKE YOU LOOK GOOD AS A PERSON? DO GOOD: OUR FABRICS MUST BE MADE WITH INTEGRITY, BE KIND TO OUR EARTH AND MADE IN A PLACE WHERE EMPLOYEES ARE PAID + TREATED FAIRLY. THE MESSAGES ON OUR PIECES HAVE TO EMBODY LOVE, COMPASSION, RESPECT + KINDNESS TO OURSELVES + OTHERS.
You just recently brought on a business partner, Nikki. What led you to make this big decision & how has it changed the business? FREE REIGN has grown and become larger than me and I couldn’t wear all the hats I needed to by myself anymore. I just knew that I couldn’t take FREE REIGN to the next level and where it deserved to go all on my own. Nikki has brought efficiency as a former business owner. She also has a keen eye for style, a passion for kindness + shares the same values. We met through FREE REIGN she started off as a customer and our friendship developed from there. I can’t wait for you all to get to know her better! Together, with our assistant, Paige, we are going to take FREE REIGN to new heights. We’re going to be unstoppable!
Why bamboo fabric? First off, it’s so environmentally friendly. It grows quickly without the need for pesticides or harmful chemicals. It naturally has antibacterial + antimicrobial properties which makes it a healthier choice. Plus, it’s naturally moisture wicking. Suffering from chronic pain causes sweat - definitely not what a woman like myself wants to admit, but it’s my new reality. To whom do you attribute your successes so far? My husband, son, family & friends. Starting this business on my own was hard. They’ve been there through all the ups & the downs. Always there at the drop of a hat to help, to cheer me on & pick me up when I started to fall.
Fashion truck? Do tell! Yaaasss! That was Nikki’s and my first order of business as new partners. We were desperately in need of space as we had outgrown our studio. While searching for a warehouse, we couldn’t find anything with a reasonable rent or appropriate size in our neighborhood in Langley. We decided that a mobile boutique made the most sense - it could carry a lot of our inventory, and elevate your pop-up shop shopping experience! We bought a 20’ cargo trailer and spent the whole summer remodelling it to become our “flagship store”.

Tara Teng wears many hats, both figuratively with her career life as former Miss Canada, CEO of Justly Market, and Ethical Fashion Blogger, and literally as her fashion style swaying from ‘beachy boho global eclectic’ to ‘elegant business woman power suit’. One thing is constant in her daily life – she is a socially conscious woman who seeks to live in alignment with her values. It's been this mindset that she has carried as an ethical fashion blogger for 10 years, all while socially and politically advocating for an end to human trafficking, that led her to create Justly Market. Justly Market is an online space where brands doing life changing work can come together in one place to receive the recognition they deserve and customers can make well-informed purchasing decisions. At the young age of 21, as Miss BC, Tara had the opportunity to meet former PM Stephen Harper to discuss human trafficking policies in Canada. The meeting was not wasted on her – and it lead to years of hard work to pass many policies in effect today. In 2011, she was named Canada’s “Woman on the Year” as well as one of the Globe and Mail’s “Top 25 Most Transformational Canadians”. She has also received an International Heroes award from the Joy Smith Foundation, as well as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal in recognition of her vast human rights work. Amidst her vast achievements, while wearing all of her hats, she is a wife and momma of two who stands true to her value to, ‘Honour everyone, always.’ 34

What would you say that your pageant experience gave you? I went through immense personal growth through my experiences representing as Miss BC, Miss Canada and Miss World Canada. I found my voice, learned how to leverage my platform and influence for causes I am passionate about, which opened so many doors and has given me the opportunity to impact things for the better. You’re a momma of 2, what is the most recent lesson your children have taught you? Time is a thief, and while the todo list will always be there, this moment with our loved ones will not. So snuggle your babies close, press pause on all the other things vying for your attention and savour every moment you can with the people who matter the most.

I HOPE THAT ONE DAY IT WILL NO LONGER BE CALLED “ETHICAL FASHION” BUT SIMPLY JUST, FASHION. AND I WHOLEHEARTEDLY BELIEVE THIS IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE I AM SEEING THE FASHION INDUSTRY SHIFT OF THE LAST 5-10 YEARS. TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING THIS CHANGE HAPPEN.
IT IS CONFRONTING WHAT IS WRONG IN THE WORLD AND MULTIPLYING WHAT IS RIGHT. IT IS NOT ABOUT SEEKING TO CREATE AND LIVE UP TO AN IMPOSSIBLY PERFECT STANDARD BUT RATHER, TO LIVE THE SMALL, DAILY ACTIONS OF LOVE AND JUSTICE THAT SHIFT OUR MINDSETS, CULTURE AND WORLD TO BE BETTER, KINDER AND MORE SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS FOR US ALL.
What would you like to share about ethical fashion and the positive impact it can have on this world? It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the magnitude of fashion and feel that our $5 shirt doesn’t make a difference, but it does. Currently, there are an estimated 75 million people working in the industry with 80% being women aged 18-24 years old. The vast majority of these women do not benefit from the advances in the workplace, they work under extreme conditions in hazardous situations, vulnerable to harassment and sexual abuse, and don’t make a sustainable living wage. Ethical fashion changes lives.
You spend much of your time advocating for such noteworthy causes and it takes patience to see change, how do you stay motivated? I see some of the most horrific things that humans can do to one another, but I also get to see daily proof of victory and triumph. When life feels dark, I remember the names and faces of survivors who have showed such courage and tenacity. I am the BC Director of The Joy Smith Foundation, an organization to end human trafficking in Canada, but it is the survivors who teach me and lead the way for me in my work.
What is the legacy you would like to leave in this world? I want to leave a legacy of impact and be remembered as a woman who never gave up, who sought to always see the best in people and who made every effort to be kind. I seek to allow grace to carry me when I cannot carry on myself, to love passionately, to seek justice, to love mercy, walk humbly with God through every day of my life. How have the women in your life supported you in your journey? I would not be able to take on two businesses and raising two babies if it weren’t for the sisterhood that surrounds me. Massive shout out to all the women who cheer one another on, who work for one another’s success and who stand together in the good, the bad and the impossible.

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHY PARTNER:
IULIA AGNEW Iulia has been an amazing photography partner and friend to I Like Her Style Vancouver since the very beginning. Her eye for creating world-class fashion photography is matched by her ability to capture food and product images in an artful and dramatic style. She's been the woman behind the lense for many of our shoots, and you'll find her work in this very issue! It was high time that we introduce you more personally to the amazing Iulia Agnew. Tell our readers a little bit about yourself... Officially, I’ve been a photographer for about 5 years now, but I’ve carried a camera with me for as long as I can remember. Even in high-school, I would bring my crappy old film camera with me to school each day just to snap random photos of anything I found interesting. I didn’t actually think about being a photographer for a living until 5 years ago when I decided to try photography as a 'side gig', only to realize that this was exactly what I wanted to do full time. You could say that my hobby has turned into my career and I now couldn’t see myself doing anything else. It's a great feeling because I spent a long time trying to 'figure it out'. The support and encouragement from my friends & family, especially my husband, has helped a lot throughout the years and kept me going even in times when I doubted myself and thought I wasn’t good enough.
“ ”
RIGHT NOW I’M REALLY INSPIRED BY MY DAUGHTER BELLA. EVEN THOUGH SHE’S ONLY BEEN ON THIS EARTH FOR A FEW MONTHS, SHE REALLY HAS BEEN TEACHING US SO MUCH, INSPIRING US TO BE BETTER PEOPLE. BEING HER MOM HAS GIVEN ME SO MUCH STRENGTH AND MADE ME A MORE CONFIDENT WOMAN IN MY PERSONAL LIFE AND ALSO IN MY WORK.

What is a lifestyle photographer? To me, a lifestyle photographer is someone who captures real life moments and documents life as it happens. Someone who captures a candid moment in a unique way. Describe your photography style. Bright, dynamic, candid & detail focused. When working with a brand to shoot content, what are some of the questions you ask and things you prepare? I like to know what their mission as a brand is, what their goals for their online presence are and how they see my role in helping them achieve these things. We usually create a mood board together and have a plan for the day of the shoot. However, I like to always keep an open mind because things can unexpectedly change on the day, and I have to be adaptable to different location changes, lighting changes, etc. Sometimes the most unexpected situations create some of the most powerful images. So it’s okay to have a super detailed plan for each project, but sometimes combining that with spur of the moment ideas can end up with some really cool photos. What do you believe the power of great photography has in building a brand? Visuals are so important for any brand. I’ll be the first one to admit, I often times will buy a product solely based on their branding... just ask my husband! If you have an amazing product or service to share with the world it’s so worth investing in good branding – from graphic design to packaging and photography. Having original content will set you apart and make you stand out from the crowd.
List some of your top spots to shoot in Vancouver for a lifestyle shoot. Some of my favourite spots are Whytecliff Park and Fort Langley. Often, for lifestyle sessions, I will shoot at a client’s home, which makes the setting even more personal and unique and allows for more genuine shots in a familiar place. What are some of your most memorable Fashion & Styling Shoots to date? I am fortunate to work with some very epic and innovative brands and I’m happy that so many of them are local to Vancouver. Some of my favourites are Kalosophie, Pivot 6, Victoria Grace, Sangre De Fruta, KVBIJOU, Ceremonie, NoMiNoU, MYO, MIFA, ZIMT to name a few and I hope to continue to work on fun projects with them for years to come. You love supporting local small businesses, why? I love working with local passion driven businesses. I always admire people who follow their own path and create unique and beautiful things to share with the world. It is a honour to be part of their journey by photographing their creations and telling their story through pictures. It also makes me so happy that many of these innovative local businesses that I work with are women-run and so many of these work partnerships have become lifelong friendships. Photography has given me such amazing opportunities and has given me some awesome friends that I would have otherwise probably never met. You are now a Momma to beautiful Bella, how has this changed your perspective on life? I am! It’s been such an amazing 6 months with her. She bring us so much joy and really makes us excited for the future. I am beyond grateful that I was chosen to be her mom. @ilikeherstylevancouver | FAL L 2018

BEING BROKE IS NEVER IN STYLE.
Lisa is a locally-based Success Coach and a selfproclaimed goal-oriented, happiness obsessed adventurist!
When I was a student, I thought being rich was about looking rich. I was like Carrie Bradshaw and had my money where I liked to see it - hanging in my closet. It wasn’t until I graduated with too much debt to justify that I realized, no matter how rich and stylish I looked, I was broke.
“
”
SINCE HITTING MY FINANCIAL ROCK BOTTOM, I TRANSFORMED MY FINANCIAL SITUATION. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO GET EMPOWERED SO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IS AS RICH AS YOUR DREAMS. 1) Set financial intentions. Why do you want to be rich? For me, I want freedom: freedom to travel, do work I enjoy, and spend time with people I love. I also want to donate money, and support causes/companies that make the world a better place. 2) Figure out what you’re currently earning and spending - and what the difference is. You can do it ol’ school with pen + paper or an Excel spreadsheet. Personally, I use the apps Mint or You Need A Budget (YNAB) as they look at the last few months of spending and tell you where your money is going. 3) Get some financial knowledge. Read a few books. Listen to some podcasts. I recommend “Millionaire Teacher” by Andrew Hallam because it proves you don’t need a high income to become a millionaire. Robert Kyosaki’s “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” is brilliant for transforming your perspective on wealth. 4) Make a plan to reach your financial goals. Automate savings. Start a side hustle. Invest your money wisely (I’m a fan of ETFs). If you don’t want to do this on your own, look for a fee-only investment planner. You pay them up front and they’ll give you the best-unbiased investment advice for your situation.
This is a story about two women. The first woman has 3 Louis Vuitton purses. She wears $300 jeans and drives two cars. She always has the latest accessories and takes extravagant shopping trips. She’s also $40,000 in debt. The second woman gets her shoes resoled instead of buying new ones. She takes transit instead of cabs and drives a 16-year old car. Though you might never know it, this girl is worth a few million dollars. These two women?
5) Decide where you spend your happiest money. Don’t give up that $4 latte if it makes you ecstatic enought to start cleaning your house because you don’t mind. Look at your past purchases and keep the ones which brought you joy. The ones you hardly remember spending or didn’t LOVE? Cut them. 6) Work your money mindset. Money is an emotionally charged subject and many of us (myself included!) have “stories” about money. Pay attention to how you think about money and listen to how you talk about money. Get Jen Sincero’s “You Are A Badass At Making Money” and don’t just read it - do the work and your wallet will thank you.
When I stopped worrying about looking rich, I started focusing on becoming rich. I started saving, watched where my money went and spent on things that truly made me happy. You can do the same. Because a fat bank account and confidence from being truly wealthy? That never goes out of style.
I’ve been both of them. 42

'Relaxing, friendly, and professional' are the 3 words she would use to describe her spa – words that her staff commits to providing their clients each day, creating nothing but a positive experience. Want to turn your spa day into a party with the ladies? Su Casa Spa is the perfect place to enjoy some pampering in a private setting with the spa closed just for you! Did somebody say wine? You’re able to bring your own food and refreshments! Don't wait, grab 4-10 girlfriends and set the date! The spa’s unique location in Fort Langley allows for the ultimate day out, with shopping and restaurants within walking distance before or after your pamper time. Oh, and by the way... Sandra and her team like to have fun so prepare for some laughs along the way! They're sure to make you feel at home – the motto is in the name: ‘Mi Casa es Su Casa’ – meaning ‘my house is your house!’ Sandra let us dig a little deeper into the 3 B’s in her life – Her Business, Her Boys, and Her Beauty Secrets.
HER BUSINESS – As a business owner, her biggest obstacle has been fear of failure, as we have been programmed that it is a bad thing. However, she shares that failure has been her best teacher. She's learned to not be afraid of it, as it has helped her go after her dreams no matter what. To stay motivated, Sandra writes down her goals and breaks them into small steps. The act of achieving inspires her to carry on. Taking time for herself and doing the things she enjoys is a MUST, as it helps the work-life balance and mental clarity needed in business.
HER BOYS – Sandra has two amazing
sons, aged 15 and 21, and a loving husband, who she says are her daily reward to come home to after a long day of work (laughter and craziness are always in order when they spend time together!) As much as she loves her job, she loves her family more. This motivates her to make goals in family and stay focused on making time for them both individually and all together. Her boys are her cheering squad – supporting her dreams, and inspiring her to be a better version of herself.

HER BEAUTY SECRETS – Much like fashion,
esthetics are about investing and taking time to care for your well-being. Sandra believes we all deserve to look and feel amazing. It’s all about enhancing your natural beauty and rocking that new skin or fresh manicure the same way you would a new pair of boots this season. Some of the latest beauty trends for fall are sheet masks and facial oils (Recovery Oil from Eminence sold at Su Casa is Sandra’s favourite), educating yourself on using products at home like multi-masking, and treating the skin from within by taking daily collagen and probiotics. Top treatments she recommends are Collagen Induction Therapy and Dermaplaning Facials.

Q
How do you stay close as you build your lives and are so busy? Do you have date nights? Other suggestions?
Answer: Let’s get real – we don’t find the time, we MAKE the time. If being in a relationship is important to you, you have to prioritize that. Don’t be afraid to raincheck and reschedule lesser priorities for those things that matter most to you. Our marriage is one of our top priorities so that means we carve out time for us in the calendar and it becomes a non-negotiable. We sacrifice things for our relationship, straight up. Being busy is a tough factor in building a solid relationship so we highly encourage you to MAKE the time, big or small. It can be as simple as taking the dog for a walk or grocery shopping together! Trust us, it’s possible and it’s worth it.

It’s round-up time! We’ve compiled a list of the most recent and most When an optimist is married to a pessimist it can be really difficult to make decisions big or small. What are your tips to handling that situation?
Answer: We see this situation as an “opposites attract” kinda thing. This question can be framed in so many ways, morning vs night person, optimist vs pessimist, structured vs laid back, planner vs go-with-the-flow. Essentially, what they all come down to is: utilizing your differences as your strengths. Think about what you can give to the situation. You and your partner both have something to bring to the table, why not leverage it to your benefit? Can you teach each other, delegate tasks, practice new skills? Make sure to “keep the volume in check” because our weaknesses are really our strengths turned up too loud. Don't be scared to talk about things ahead of time so when the time actually comes to make those decisions, you've created a game plan and a path of action so you're not feeling like you're both bickering at one another. Pro tip: Check in with your selfcare/love tank. Are you coming from a place of “giving”, somewhere full and healthy? Or do you need some TLC? Check into where your love tank is at before doing anything!
Q
@relationshipproject
How can I make my partner “do the work”? I feel like I’m the only one making progress or compromising!
Answer: Whew. This one is tough. We can never make anyone do anything. We are only responsible for ourselves and that’s where we suggest some advice. If you can dive into the work you need to do for yourself; read the books, take the online course, go to the events and therapy, eventually your partner will notice. This doesn’t mean do everything yourself. Continue to invite them along the journey with you, to read a paragraph, listen to a podcast, or watch a video. They may get curious, they may appreciate the changes you’re making. If that door is accessible and open, encourage them to walk through it but know that you can’t make them! (And if that urge is there, that’s a hint there’s more homework for you to do, too!)
common questions we get asked into a collective speed-round article! We hope you can relate to some of these (goodness knows, we can!) and that your burning curiosities are addressed! Let’s get to it:
Q
My partner always, and I mean always, has to be right. It’s become really challenging for me to have patience and talk to them when it always feels like a fight or like I’m wrong. Help?
Answer: Well, sweet friend, from a recovering “right-fighter” I hear you. That situation is no fun at all. While we all know “it’s better to be united than to be right,” it’s way easier said than done. This really comes down to pride and ego. Which usually means they’re perceiving some sort of threat to themselves. If they’re “wrong” are they going to be hurt? Looked at as less worthy? Unintelligent? Argumentative? Will things be “out of their control”? This can be scary for a right fighter and like our advice above suggests, we can’t make anyone change. But here’s what we’d suggest. Outside of a “right fight” have gentle conversations with your partner about your observations and how they make you feel. Maybe ask them questions about their motivations for being right and really strive to understand them. This can make those heated moments a little easier to manage if you know what’s really behind it. It can even be a pivot point if you’re able to gently bring that into attention during a hot moment, too! Good luck!
Q
Do you think it’s okay for spouses to be friends with their exes?
Answer: In short, no. In long, yes. Usually if this question comes around, there’s either inappropriate boundaries around the relationship resulting in trust issues or insecurity going on. There’s plenty of folks able to have great relationships with their exes and have healthy, successful marriages and primary partnerships. In some cases that’s not possible. Our best advice for this question would be, do you boo. We think the ideal goal is to come to a place of peace in all past relationships and that can be a journey to get there. If you’re finding it difficult, start with having conversations around boundaries and trust building. Then, look at your insecurities. Your partner is with YOU, you are worthy, you are enough. Start with that work and go from there!
Whew. There you have it, friend! Our latest round-up.
We LOVE answering your questions and keeping the REALationship conversations going. If we can leave you with something today, let it be this. All relationships are different. Truly. While this is our take on these questions, we encourage you to dig in and find what works for you. You have the power to design the relationship you want and more than that – you deserve to. We are sincerely rooting for ya, friend! You’ve got this!

VANCITY BUSINESS BABES
10 BUSINESS BABE SUCCESS TIPS 1. Know your WHY - Understand the purpose behind your business. What you are working towards. What kind of positive impact do you want to create in this world? Create a clear vision and know your values. 2. Surround yourself with inspiring people - Jim Rohn said ‘You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.’ It is vital that you surround yourself with those who will empower you to be the best version of yourself. 3. Take massive action and be consistent - Get Clear on what Actions are going to make the biggest impact in your business and focus on those. The goal is not to work harder, but to work smarter and be consistent. Find a good schedule that works for you and stick to it. Once you are in momentum, things seem to flow and there is a compound effect that starts to happen. 4. Get comfortable being uncomfortable - If you want to grow a successful business, you are going to have to do a lot of scary things that are way outside your comfort zone. Get comfortable being in that state and slowly your comfort zone will expand and things that were once scary will be second nature! 5. Ask for help - ‘Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much’ - Helen Keller. This could not be more true. Don’t let your pride hold you back from asking for help. In your journey, there will be many things you need help with, don’t be afraid to ask for help! We can’t do it all on our own. And, that is OKAY! 6. Trust your gut - When you are presented with an opportunity, notice how you feel about it, what is your gut instinct? Advice I love to follow is if its not a ‘HECK YES’ then it should be a no. If you are still having trouble deciding, write it all down, get it down on paper and evaluate the pro’s and cons. This may help get you clear on your decision. 7. Stay in your genius zone, delegate the rest - Figure out what you do best, and spend most of your time on that. Then find people who you trust that you can delegate the tasks that drain your energy. 8. Be patient - Success does not happen overnight. I know it may seem like it but anyone you see that is having success has put in long hours, has had many failures and setbacks, but kept on going, understanding that they needed to plant seeds, cultivate strong relationships and see it through in the long run. 9. Continue to re-invent yourself and your business You are constantly changing and that is OKAY! Don’t be afraid to do things a bit differently or to completely re-invent yourself or your business. If something is not resonating with you anymore, its okay to change and move in a different direction. Stay true to who you are and to your values. 10. Enjoy the journey - Life is too short not to enjoy every single moment. Don’t take yourself too seriously and take care of your own wellbeing first! Take time away from work to rest. Get out into nature, read a book you love, set boundaries on your time and the amount you are on Social Media. Make sure you are healthy and happy. This will feed into the success of your business too!

Fall is my favorite season because I love fall fashion! Sounds a bit ridiculous? Just hear me out for a moment - It’s all about cozy, layers and a dash of crisp. I personally love how functional Fall items can be – mix and match, layer and carry forward into other seasons. Fall staples can last for years without being unnecessarily dated. Here are some of my favorite Fall pieces that were an absolute ease to transition from Summer and will definitely make their way into Winter and Spring! I grabbed them all at Guildford Town Centre and I’ve made them easy for you find. BB Dakota, Hugs Don't Wear these separately, Lie Faux Fur Jacket or put them all together Privilege, $148 for a complete outfit. With great softness comes great responsibility. The Hugs Happy Shopping!
Don't Lie faux fur jacket is pretty much the softest thing in existence. It has an open front and cropped sleeves. Once you put it on – you won’t want to take it off – I promise! It's super comfortable and the perfect statement piece. It's a real conversation-starter! It’s the perfect jacket to mix and match with both casual and dressy pieces throughout the season. Sizing wise, it’s totally up to you – buy the right fit, or you can go a size or two larger since oversized outerwear is the rage this season. I know you’ll want to... but try not to wear it to bed at night! Ha!
Blundstone, Chisel Toe Browns, $220 I have been obsessing over these boots and finally I caved. I’m not even stressing about the dollar-dollar bills added to the visa... that's how worth it these are! These boots are a favorite around the world and now I understand why. They are the perfect cross between formal and casual. You can pair these boots with thick black tights and a sweater dress or skirt – or pair them with your favorite jeggings and be out the door. Did I mention the comfort? OMG Ah-Mazing!
Wilfred, Corteta Sweater Artzia, $98 Yes, they are back... Turtlenecks! And/Or Mocknecks! As mocked as these pieces may be, they are one of the best staples to keep in your closet. Every fashion-lover knows to keep a turtleneck hidden in her closet for the right time and place. Layer them over or under almost anything: oversized blazers, sweaters, dress shirts, tuck them into high waisted skirts, pair with faux fur vests, you can even extend some of those summer dresses into fall! Just use your fashionista imagination and it can be done! The Corteta sweater is knit from a lightweight yarn in a cozy jersey stretch and cinches in a bit at the waist to make it cozy and flattering! If a material could melt in your mouth... this would be it!
Vancouver weather has been somewhat unpredictable, therefore Blundstones will be your Fall best friend! Plus, they’re unisex and have children’s sizes as well. If there were ever a pair of shoes that could work for every member of the family - this would be it! They’re made from premium leather, built for stability, have a removable footbed, and have an extra set of footbeds for fit adjustment. This is the must have shoe for this season and seasons to come!
