ISSUE TWO HERE I COME Buckle up and put your helmet on! This is the first issue of 2021 and we begin our journey together with hope for this new year. For me, last year was about putting one foot in front of the other, taking life as it came, and giving myself and others plenty of grace. As we begin 2021, I carry with me the softness and gratitude that I ended the year with, but I also add in the hope and a gentle sprinkling of motivation that the New Year brings. I’m approaching life and the year – not wondering what it will bring for me, but what I can GIVE to it! Beep beep... 2021 here I Come! Let’s take this journey together! Q&A

I asked this amazing group of I Like Her Style Vancouver community friends:

What is one non-negotiable way that you intend to invest in yourself in 2021?

In 2021 I’m investing in a mindset shift. I have decided that it’s nonnegotiable for me to live FEARLESSLY, after spending way too much of last year in a place of fear surrounding countless areas of my life such as Covid, health, finances, full-time motherhood, entrepreneurship, wedding planning & re-planning... the list goes on. Days leading with fear are long and exhausting and quite frankly, a burden. It’s time for me to let go! Let go of the things that are out of my control and trust in my ability to navigate whatever life has in store for me this year. I have a pretty good track record of making it out okay and fear has proven not to be the best sidekick in the journey. Watch out 2021, this fearless Momma has found her footing! @jamie.krause

@AXARTATELIER OWNERS AND MASTER MAKEUP ARTISTS One non-negotiable way that we intend to invest in ourselves this 2021 is to continue our growth and learning! We really stepped out of our comfort zone last year and we want to continue to do things that scare us! During this slow season due to Covid, we have taken the opportunity to reinvest our time and money into new skills and knowledge about our industry. This is non-negotiable for us as we see pushing the boundaries and further developing our craft as the only way for us to provide the best service to our clients.

HOME & LIVING BLOGGER, SHOP OWNER I’m investing by saying ‘no’ to things that don’t feel right, even if it means I go without. (In the case of declining partnership offers for my brand.) I’ll be accepting work on my terms, and advocating for myself when necessary. Only you know what you want for your business, and saying ‘no’ to the things that aren’t for you can be the best investment in yourself you can make! stylebook

CODI LYNN @creativecodilynn

LIFESTYLE BLOGGER & MARKETING MANAGER This year I am investing in myself by taking the ideas I have had floating around in my head and working to bring them into fruition. I often think, ‘I want to do’, or ‘I want to try that’. This year I don’t want to just say it... I want to do it. Taking action is one of the hardest steps as my self consciousness and insecurities can get the best of me. I’ll invest in myself by not being afraid to fail and giving my new ideas a try and seeing what happens.

give your best self to the world.

You have something so special to give to the world, and you don’t need to stretch yourself or learn a skill to begin, because it’s already in you – and you are right where you need to be. Photo: @iulia.agnew 18

time to check in and take what you need. This is your permission. Articles about self care, meditation, and intention might sound all well-andgood... but maybe that just doesn’t feel like ‘your style’. Yet, at the same time, you’re feeling misaligned, frustrated, and that you’re running on fumes. Sound familiar? Okay, exhale... I’m getting a knot in my back just typing about it! It’s okay, we all have these feelings. But these feelings aren’t getting us on the fast-track to anywhere good! This is a reminder that now is the best time to do a little check-in with yourself. What is it that you’re missing? My favourite spin instructor tells us to ‘take what we need’ between songs. I LOVE that. Sometimes you just need a reminder, permission, or firm instruction to do so! I’m willing to bet that we are in need of more real connection, more precious time alone – or both.

Need connection? You’re not alone. Luckily, connection is at our fingertips! Set up a group chat – maybe even bring in two different friends from within your life. Set an alarm or reminder to check in with them daily. Set a standing phone call date with a friend or family member each week. Need more? How about a Starbucks ParkN-Chat? Park beside your friend and call on speakerphone. You’ll see AND hear each other... almost like a real get-together! Hey, one day we will definitely laugh at the lengths we went to! Let’s have fun with it! Need time alone? As an only child who now lives in a very high-volume household, alone time is like gold to me. If it’s a challenge, talk to your partner about how you can make this happen, and trade-off. They may need it too! Maybe you put a locking door-knob on the spare room door? Maybe you leave and go for a drive? Put on a podcast or audiobook to re-charge. This might be totally foreign, but buy yourself a notebook and begin. You absolutely will surprise yourself! I find that ideas and the answers to my questions often come to me while I write. It is during time alone that we connect to our inner-selves.

THE MODERN DAY WIFE DIGITAL EVENTS THAT COMBINE CONNECTION, MOTIVATION, AND STYLE FOR TODAY’S MODERN WOMEN.

Founder Meagan Ayres with Chelsea Burwash, Director of Sponsors and Partners Photo: @fridayevephoto 20

PARTNER FEATURE

Last year’s challenges were no match for Vancouver’s Meagan Ayers! She took her newly launched event-based brand, The Modern Day Wife and doubled-down by partnering with California-based friend Meghan Fialkoff. With last year’s onset of Covid, Meagan and Meghan embodied the spirit of The Modern Day Wife, but acting quickly, creatively and intelligently. In a short time, they transitioned the business to a digital space and expanded into the United States. “The events have since exploded!” Shares Meghan F. “We’ve had some of the best speakers in the world– from celebrities, to business execs, to women who are really making everything work.” @themoderndaywife themoderndaywife.com

The community has expanded from a digital event audience to our brand new membership called The Vault, a Merchandise Line and an Ambassador Program. Our team now includes 27 women and men from all over Canada and the US.

PARTNER FEATURE

Q: How do you define

a ‘Modern Day Wife’? A Modern Day Wife is a woman who wants to be able to do it all and win at it. She wants to enjoy her career and she has goals that she is working toward. She wants to be present in her family, create her child’s future and ensure everyone is taken care of. She wants to look and feel her best, know what’s on trend, and most of all – enjoy doing all of these things!

Q: What can someone

expect from a digital MDW event / what are the ‘secret ingredients’ you try to add to each event? When you go to an in-person event, there are certain elements that make it an experience for you. From the moment you walk in, you hear music, a cocktail waiter walks over to you to serve a drink, the lights are dimmed, candles are glowing in the background – it makes you feel a certain way. This is the type of mood, ambiance and experience we aim to achieve at our digital events. We curate a pre-show with a DJ so as soon as you log-in, you are hearing your favorite song by Kygo or The Weekend and are already excited to tune in. You then

get walked through a cocktail-making session, maybe a Somalier will come on and give advice on wine – it’s all timelined out so that we build the momentum to the main show. Then, tadah! The main show comes on – a celebrity opens it up, gives her tips for feeling your best and staying on track to achieve your goals. Then we are off... segment by segment, short, punchy, real – our speakers give information to our audience that is inspiring, tactical and from hard-won experience. So, what will you get from a MDW digital event? Community, fun, a break from the usual schedule, amazing help and assistance to jump start your career and relationships. Modern Day Wife is “the village” that you hear about in the idiom “it takes a village.” Our events give you the community you need to keep yourself going. Secret ingredients - yes! Aesthetics, fine details, a professional tech platform, short & punchy – keeping you glued to your screen!

Q: What have been the benefits

of ‘2020’s pivot’ from being a Vancouver-based event, to today with online events? We still are extremely centralized in Vancouver, but now we’re also creating and expanding our base throughout the US - LA, Manhattan, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Texas, Nashville. We’ve been able o reach so many more women - including 25

university women, young women who are starting their careers, moms, single moms. We’ve just been able to reach so many more people and help them form community.

Q: What do you hope that

a woman at home gains from joining your next event? She’s going to get inspiration on how she can do more. Maybe she wants to start a side business, to learn how to juggle things better, or to have more of a community. That’s what she’s going to get from this event.

Q: Share a bit about the

team and the synergy of working together We have an amazing team of 27 women and men from all over the US and Canada. We have some great programs we’re working with like Asana to really get all of our agendas scheduled out. Everyone knows what they’re doing. Everyone really owns their projects and is excited about creating this brand together. We are a very ‘go-go, yesyes’ kind of group. We like to be friendly. We like to be upbeat. We like to collaborate. We like to have an open community. That’s basically how we operate, and that’s what makes us feel good.

26

26 |

stylebook

Q: The future is still a bit

uncertain, but what’s ahead for MDW in your master plan? So much! We could answer this in a whole essay. Right now it’s all about The Vault... unlocking the Vault (our membership program) and getting all of the benefits of being part of a community of women who want to expand in all areas of their life, surrounded by women who feel the same way.

FIG & PISTACHIO PANNA COTTA Friend and contributor Carlyanne Pruger and husband Mark are the creative talent behind White Table Catering Co.

Directions Place the water in a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatin on top to hydrate. Let stand until needed. Pour milk, cream, salt and sugar into a saucepan and place over medium low heat. Split the vanilla pod with a knife and scrape seeds adding both the pod and the vanilla seeds to the milk & cream mixture. Simmer gently for 5-7 minutes to dissolve the sugar and allow the vanilla to impart it’s flavour.

Ingredients 1 tablespoon unflavored powdered gelatin 3 tbsp water 3 cups heavy whipping cream 1 cup whole milk ½ fresh vanilla pod (or 1 tbsp vanilla extract) 5 tablespoon sugar Pinch salt 1/2 lb fresh mission figs Toasted pistachios 2 tbsp lemon zest 2 tbsp organic honey

Add the gelatin and stir well to dissolve and disperse evenly. Remove from the heat and strain into a measuring jug or pitcher. Pour into 6 stemless wine glasses so that they are just about 1/2 full. B Y K YLA G E T T Y

I’m no stranger to eyelash extensions – in fact, they are probably my number one favourite beauty must-have. Over the past 8 years, I’ve had lashes applied by 8 different lash techs. Each provided the service just a bit differently... It’s not a one-size-fits-all scenario! From varying products to techniques and application – even the humidity in the room can affect longevity! And we haven’t even talked about eye shape and style preference. Introducing Jenny Valla, or ‘JennyV’. In the past few months since working with her, I’ve found that her lash application tops my Lash List. The eyelash extensions she applies are dramatic, but not overthe-top artificial looking. What’s more, the product itself is one of the most lightweight lashes I have had applied. I’m excited to share the woman behind the lashes, in this Q&A with Jenny Valla herself. Get to know this multi-talented, award winning artist and what makes her lashes stand out from the rest in the room.

www.ilikeherstyle.com

Q: Welcome Jenny!

First of all, thank you for ‘lashing me to the fullest’! Tell us about yourself and your career. My pleasure! I’m so thrilled that you’ve loved them. Where to begin? I am a mobile freelance make-up artist, hair stylist and lash tech serving the Greater Vancouver area. (I’m also an award-winning, double Leo-nominated Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist for film and bridal! During the course of my career, I’ve had over 100 print and editorials published. My experience spans Film, TV, SFX, Fashion, Bridal

and Special Event Makeup & Hair styling. I’m the owner & CEO of Mink Makeup & Hair, which is my Mobile Bridal company. I specialize in Flawless & Cruelty Free Beauty, and am passionate about animal rights, clean beauty products and Vegan lashes! Outside of the traditional, I’m skilled in Custom Prosthetics, Costuming, Creative Hairstyling, Airbrushing and Body painting. I’m a mother of 2 boys and I teach Makeup and Hair at John Casablanca’s Institute in Vancouver.

Q: What do you love most about lash extensions?

I get them done myself and love them, it’s a way for me to save time in the morning when getting ready for a gig or anything really! I have 2 young boys and a busy work schedule so it is a huge time saver and I need that! I know a lot of busy women can relate! Also, as I age I’ve noticed that they also give me a bit of an eye lift too! I love helping other women save time and look and feel better, plus get a boost of confidence! It’s such a great feeling when my clients see their customized lashes after our sessions... I love it!

Q: Who do you recommend eyelash extensions for?

Everyone! Well I think if you are busy, looking to enhance your natural beauty or just love lashes... this is for you!

Q: What can a client

Q: Tell us about the

products you use? I use Enlightened lashes – which is where I was trained! I chose this company because of their devotion to being cruelty-free and they are also local to BC.

expect from a lash appointment with you? The whole salon experience! I bring my lash bed with heating pad, ergonomic lash pillow for comfort and neck support, a ring light and relaxing music to chill out to or take a nap!

Q: Tell us a little bit about

aftercare... and how to get the best longevity from a lash ‘set’. Aftercare is very important. Limit makeup, oily products, mascara, excessive steam and water, wash everyday, brush once a day, sleep on your side or back, use a lash conditioner specifically for lashes and book your fills every 2-3 weeks so your tech can remove old lashes.

Q: Can you customize the

look – and what do you recommend for various eye shapes? Yes, I usually start by asking my client what they like and don’t like. I then proceed to use my knowledge as a makeup artist, taking eye shapes into consideration. Natural lash strength and length matters also. If my client has super short and fine natural lashes, I recommend shorter and lighter silk extensions. I start off by going 40% longer than the natural lash.

Q: What’s a common

misconception about lash extensions? A very common and unfortunate misconception is that Lash Extensions will ruin your lashes... and that it’s permanent. This will not happen when you have a good lash tech, let me explain... Lash Techs are not regulated like Makeup Artists. Because of this, a lot of people are going into this industry with absolutely no prerequisites.

Anyone can get trained in a day or online and be working on your lashes with no experience and no other training. A full set done by a good tech is about 1 1/2 2 hours long because there are about 100 natural lashes per eye to get through. If the job is rushed, the lashes tend to get stuck together. Also, they may not be getting all the lashes done making it look like you had bad retention and need to fill them in more frequently. Lashes come in different weights. The most popular weight that lash artists use is .15mg (what I use, mainly) and can go up to .20mg. Personally, I do not think .20 is necessary and I do not carry it in my kit. The lightest is .03 which are used to make volume fans with 3-6 hairs to total approx .15mg. If you have weak or thin lashes, these heavier weights can cause your lashes to fall out prematurely. Do your research, ask the lash artist questions!

did you know? In addition to mobile eyelash exten-

sions, Jenny also offers mobile Lash Lift & Tint! If you’re wondering which is right for you, here’s a chart to compare...

2020’S 10 BEST BEAUTY FINDS As much as I love makeup and beauty products, when I find a good thing, I stay loyal to it in the best way. But in 2020, I ventured out a bit... and I like what I tried! Here are the top 10 products that I discovered last year.

The Review: This little

St. Tropez Gradual Tan Watermelon Infusion as we love a bronzed glow, there’s one thing that selfbronzed babes can agree we hate... the smell! This is a self-proclaimed ‘everyday moisture miracle body lotion’, which sums it up perfectly. The pleasant watermelon scent and the lotion consistency allows the product to glide on lovely! It’s a gradual tan, so it has a lot of forgiveness in the application. Just make sure you wash your hands and in between fingers after use.

tarteist™ PRO Amazonian Clay Palette this palette and fell in love! It is as fun to create looks with as it is to just look at! It has a variety of shades for any look and every season. My go-to’s: ‘classic’ which is a great base shade, ‘indie’ which is perfect in the crease, ‘punk’ is the ideal shade for a smoky lower liner, and ‘vintage’ pops in the inner corner/brow bone. From there, any colour can be added to create your artist look! These shades also have the sweetest chocolaty scent! Mmm!

Smashbox Step By Step Contour Kit in Light/Medium face palette has become my everything! Designed as a contour palette, I use this every day on top of my foundation as my setting powder, contour and bronzer. On lazy days, I even pop these shades on my eyes. Match your skintone by swirling together the lightest shade with the bronzer to create a custom powder blend. It applies like velvet and has a beautiful finish. It also comes with a cute little contour brush that works like a charm!

The Review: This time

St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mist When I went brunette last season, I tried out this lightweight face mist. It’s infused with 100 percent natural tanning agents. I’m not surprised that it’s an award-winner! It helps me get a natural-looking glow on my face, neck and shoulders. It’s great for misting over any other self-tanned areas that need evening out. It’s hydrating and weightless with antioxidant hibiscus extract, the fresh green mandarin water adds a refreshing scent.

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer In FU$$Y ‘influenced’ by one of my fave insta-girls for this one and I ain’t mad about it either! This gloss is juicy in every sense of the word – from the wet, shimmering shade to the fruity scent itself. It kind of reminds me of apple juice! lol It’s been described as having ‘explosive shine that feels as good as it looks.’ Shea Butter conditions skin and you can feel good that it’s free of parabens, phthalates, and animal cruelty. I wear it alone and on top of lipstick.

3

Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer, Primer + Moisturizer of year, I’m like a sponge for moisture. I can’t get enough! I received a sample size of this product and I’m going to repurchase because it’s that good! It just quenches and primes in the best way. (I still use a separate moisturizer, but probably don’t even have to!) This moisturizing primer sets in seconds, acting as a magnet that locks in makeup. It visibly plumps and moisturizes with hyaluronic acid to smooth the look of fine lines and stop makeup from settling into pores.

L’Oreal Paris Magic Root Touch Up Temporary Hair Colour Spray, (I use Black)

46

The Review:

My covid-solution to high-maintenance hair was to colour it myself and I haven’t looked back. When roots (and grays) pop up, this lightweight spray has been the quick solution for a flawless look on those

days that I want to look my best. It conceals grays in seconds with seamless coverage. The formula leaves no smudging once dry & it’s ammonia and peroxide-free. Lasts until your next shampoo.

The Review: This is the

Maybelline New York Colorsensational Lipcolor, In Warm Me Up discovery of 2020 - hands down! I included this in the last issue too – it’s that good! For the drugstore price, this lipstick and shade are an essential in my kit. It delivers a crisp color application in a beautiful pinkish nude. The feel is creamy, from the nourishing honey nectar inside. I have similar shades from high-end brands I like, too. But I still reach for this all the time!

GLAMNETIC Lashes in LUST + Magnetic Liner times did I see the instagram ad before making this late-night purchase? Hm, probably 85! lol It finally got me! I tried a few lash brands throughout 2020, in search of ones that worked for me. These didn’t irritate, and were easy to apply. They are round and voluminous. The ‘Lust’ design is great for my hooded eyes. The length adds the right amount of drama. Made from premium mink, they are lightweight enough to stay comfortable.

Revlon Kiss Cushion Lip Tint, In Pink Irl most unique lip product I have in my collection! What might have been a gimmick, turned into a total win! The product is applied with a pillowy soft cushion tip. It has buildable colour that dries to a blotted lip look with the feel of a balm. Simply turn and click the wand and colour appears. It’s a Hybrid formula infused with coconut oil so lips feel smooth and moisturized. I like to first apply liner to amp it up. The shade Pink Irl is a gorgeous rose shade.

THE RISE OF RITUALS

SARAH BOHDANOVA SHARES HOW TO INFUSE FEMININE RITUALS INTO THE EVERYDAY.

48

January and September are often a catalyst for people to get back to their routines, but can we just take a second to talk about the word routine? A routine is defined as, “a habit or a mechanical performance of an established procedure.” Did you just yawn? Because I definitely did! Don’t get me wrong, I know habits are fantastic! You need great habits to make great things happen. But when you do “a mechanical performance of an established procedure” does it get your feminine vibrancy going? My guess is no. It’s task orientated. A get it done mentality. Check it off the list, and fuhgeddaboudit! (and yes, sometimes that feels really good too!) What if we shifted our focus from creating habits to creating rituals? A ritual creates a different feeling towards the action. A more inspired feeling. A more infused feeling. et me show you what I mean by illustrating a morning routine L through the lens of habits, and then the lens of rituals.

a habit approach…

I get up, make my bed, then check my phone. I pop in for a quick shower and spend a few minutes on my makeup. I grab my coffee and take it to go, sipping about half of it before my first meeting.

THE RISE OF RITUALS

Now, let’s infuse some Feminine Ritual into this equation…

a ritual approach…

I get up and start my morning with my favorite cedarwood essential oil. I diffuse it as I make my bed, and the scent wakes me up. I take 5 minutes and write in my gratitude journal, priming my mind for my day. I hop in the shower, and play my morning playlist. (For me it would definitely be either French café or Bossa Nova.) I give myself time to apply my makeup, and enjoy getting myself ready for the day. I grab my coffee, and I sit for the first few sips or the whole cup if I’ve given myself the time, tasting the flavors. Then, if I have time and I feel it will serve me, I check my phone before heading out the door.

It’s different right? All I did was add an oil that made my morning smell fantastic, put together a playlist that inspired me, carved out 10-15 minutes to allow me some time to write in my journal, and actually taste my coffee. The first scenario feels like you’re running on someone else’s treadmill, already late for life. But when you fill your life with rituals, you make the choice to create your own beautiful life! This month I encourage you to look at your morning, and take some steps to infuse a little ritual into it!
