Ingredients

1 tablespoon unflavored powdered gelatin 3 tbsp water 3 cups heavy whipping cream 1 cup whole milk ½ fresh vanilla pod (or 1 tbsp vanilla extract) 5 tablespoon sugar Pinch salt 1/2 lb fresh mission figs Toasted pistachios 2 tbsp lemon zest 2 tbsp organic honey

Directions

Place the water in a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatin on top to hydrate. Let stand until needed.

Pour milk, cream, salt and sugar into a saucepan and place over medium low heat.

Split the vanilla pod with a knife and scrape seeds adding both the pod and the vanilla seeds to the milk & cream mixture.

Simmer gently for 5-7 minutes to dissolve the sugar and allow the vanilla to impart it’s flavour.

Add the gelatin and stir well to dissolve and disperse evenly.

Remove from the heat and strain into a measuring jug or pitcher. Pour into 6 stemless wine glasses so that they are just about 1/2 full.

Refrigerate until set - 8 hours or preferably overnight.

Before serving: Slice fresh figs into quarters and add to a bowl. Add lemon zest and wildflower honey and toss to combine.

Top each panna cotta with the fresh fig mixture and garnish with toasted pistachios.

I’m no stranger to eyelash extensions – in fact, they are probably my number one favourite beauty must-have. Over the past 8 years, I’ve had lashes applied by 8 different lash techs. Each provided the service just a bit differently... It’s not a one-size-fits-all scenario! From varying products to techniques and application – even the humidity in the room can affect longevity! And we haven’t even talked about eye shape and style preference.

Introducing Jenny Valla, or ‘JennyV’. In the past few months since working with her, I’ve found that her lash application tops my Lash List. The eyelash extensions she applies are dramatic, but not overthe-top artificial looking. What’s more, the product itself is one of the most lightweight lashes I have had applied.

I’m excited to share the woman behind the lashes, in this Q&A with Jenny Valla herself. Get to know this multi-talented, award winning artist and what makes her lashes stand out from the rest in the room. Q: Welcome Jenny!

First of all, thank you for ‘lashing me to the fullest’! Tell us about yourself and your career.

My pleasure! I’m so thrilled that you’ve loved them. Where to begin? I am a mobile freelance make-up artist, hair stylist and lash tech serving the Greater Vancouver area. (I’m also an award-winning, double Leo-nominated Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist for film and bridal! During the course of my career, I’ve had over 100 print and editorials published. My experience spans Film, TV, SFX, Fashion, Bridal

and Special Event Makeup & Hair styling. I’m the owner & CEO of Mink Makeup & Hair, which is my Mobile Bridal company. I specialize in Flawless & Cruelty Free Beauty, and am passionate about animal rights, clean beauty products and Vegan lashes! Outside of the traditional, I’m skilled in Custom Prosthetics, Costuming, Creative Hairstyling, Airbrushing and Body painting.

I’m a mother of 2 boys and I teach Makeup and Hair at John Casablanca’s Institute in Vancouver.

Q: What do you love most about lash extensions? I get them done myself and love them, it’s a way for me to save time in the morning when getting ready for a gig or anything really! I have 2 young boys and a busy work schedule so it is a huge time saver and I need that! I know a lot of busy women can relate! Also, as I age I’ve noticed that they also give me a bit of an eye lift too! I love helping other women save time and look and feel better, plus get a boost of confidence! It’s such a great feeling when my clients see their customized lashes after our sessions... I love it!

Q: Who do you recommend eyelash extensions for? Everyone! Well I think if you are busy, looking to enhance your natural beauty or just love lashes... this is for you!

Q: What can a client

expect from a lash appoint-

ment with you? The whole salon experience! I bring my lash bed with heating pad, ergonomic lash pillow for comfort and neck support, a ring light and relaxing music to chill out to or take a nap! Q: Tell us about the products you use? I use Enlightened lashes – which is where I was trained! I chose this company because of their devotion to being cruelty-free and they are also local to BC.

Q: Tell us a little bit about

aftercare... and how to get the best longevity from a

lash ‘set’. Aftercare is very important. Limit makeup, oily products, mascara, excessive steam and water, wash everyday, brush once a day, sleep on your side or back, use a lash conditioner specifically for lashes and book your fills every 2-3 weeks so your tech can remove old lashes.

Q: Can you customize the

look – and what do you recommend for various

eye shapes? Yes, I usually start by asking my client what they like and don’t like. I then proceed to use my knowledge as a makeup artist, taking eye shapes into consideration. Natural lash strength and length matters also. If my client has super short and fine natural lashes, I recommend shorter and lighter silk extensions. I start off by going 40% longer than the natural lash.

Q: What’s a common

misconception about lash

extensions? A very common and unfortunate misconception is that Lash Extensions will ruin your lashes... and that it’s permanent. This will not happen when you have a good lash tech, let me explain... Lash Techs are not regulated like Makeup Artists. Because of this, a lot of people are going into this industry with absolutely no prerequisites. Anyone can get trained in a day or online and be working on your lashes with no experience and no other training. A full set done by a good tech is about 1 1/2 - 2 hours long because there are about 100 natural lashes per eye to get through. If the job is rushed, the lashes tend to get stuck together. Also, they may not be getting all the lashes done making it look like you had bad retention and need to fill them in more frequently. Lashes come in different weights. The most popular weight that lash artists use is .15mg (what I use, mainly) and can go up to .20mg. Personally, I do not think .20 is necessary and I do not carry it in my kit. The lightest is .03 which are used to make volume fans with 3-6 hairs to total approx .15mg. If you have weak or thin lashes, these heavier weights can cause your lashes to fall out prematurely. Do your research, ask the lash artist questions!

did you know? In addition to mobile eyelash extensions, Jenny also offers mobile Lash Lift & Tint! If you’re wondering which is right for you, here’s a chart to compare...
