Welcome to Issue 3 - The Body & Soul Issue! We have loved creating this issue for you for many reasons. First of all, with the mission statement: Style with Soul to Empower, we are over the moon to have the opportunity to delve beneath the surface of the word 'style'. It's about styling a healthy life from the inside out. (A pretty darn empowering idea, if you ask us!) We have had the opportunity to meet countless women in the business of influencing, supporting and coaching health – for all aspects of the body and soul. We couldn't be more pleased to offer this platform to showcase these powerhouse women and their expertise.
Growing up as best friends - we've shared the Summertime tradition of visiting White Rock Beach (along with our moms!) You might call White Rock our shared 'Happy Place'. Just breathing in that salty air brings our bodies and souls into alignment. We knew that this would be the perfect location to shoot this issue's cover with the stunning Meray Froese of My Reward Fitness. We couldn't help but jump in to capture a few photos of our own!

It's God and family first for Meray Froese, who describes herself as strong, independent and driven. The Egyptian-born personal trainer calls Fort Langley home, along with her loving husband of four years, Dallas. The Lower Mainland is also home to Meray's business – 'My Reward Fitness' and the backdrop to her recently launched blog: 'Meray Froese Living Well' at merayfroese.com. It's no surprise that Meray is goal oriented. She has done an amazing job in harnessing the power of social media to share and expand her business and blog. With an outstanding client list, growing schedule of classes, online programs, and projects in the works – it may seem that 'Living Well' just comes easily. "This past year was the most difficult year of my life as I experienced a stillbirth, and lost my baby at nearly 6 months pregnant. I’ve always considered myself a strong person, and could never have imagined feeling so weak. I’ve experienced pain and heartache before, but there has never been a pain as deep as losing my babies. As much as I wanted to bury myself in bed in a dark room, I had to make a choice everyday to choose to move forward, keep busy, and surround myself with uplifting, motivating people. My heart did not heal overnight and there is still a big hole there, which I’m not sure will never be filled. That being said, I know that my life is in God’s hands, and I have so much in life to be thankful for."
“My ability to relate and connect with people is one of my best traits. I love people, no matter your background, age, or interests. I find people so fascinating, and I really make an effort to make everyone I have a conversation with feel important, valued and cared for.ˮ
“Through the ups and downs of 2016, my faith has been sharpened, and my drive to grow my business and be there for my community has definitely increased. Through my experience I have prioritized by cutting out distractions in my life. I am putting all my attention into the work that I want to do, people I want to see, and surrounding myself with an uplifting, strengthening environment.”

My Reward Fitness
I started my My Reward Fitness in 2012 while still attending Trinity Western University. I began training friends and family for free, because I was so passionate about exercise and it's life-changing effects. I wanted everyone that I knew to be transformed and fall in love with exercise in the same way that I had. Word got around that I was personal training and I organically gained clients. I trained them at the local track and my husband (who was my boyfriend at the time) suggested that I should start a business and website. That is how My Reward Fitness began. Over the past 5 years, my business has had highs and lows but this year has been the best yet. I am feeling inspired and motivated to continue to grow My Reward Fitness in the Vancouver area, and hopefully globally.
“I think that being happy and positive is a choice, and it is contagious. Everyday I wake up and decide to choose joy and be positive. Life is not easy and I think I’ve experienced the worst of it in the past year. But I try my best to separate it from my business and still be a positive light to my clients and readers. I always want to motivate and inspire people to be the best that they can be.ˮ
What is the recipe for your success? I think my recipe for success is just working hard and being myself. No one else can be me and I think that will always separate me from other businesses – even if we are offering the same services. I also think that being personable and building friendships with my clients has been really rewarding. Who is your support network? First and foremost my husband and my family. They are the people who I go to with good and bad news. They are always there to support, encourage, and give me constructive criticism. I am also extremely blessed to have the most incredible women in my life who inspire me daily. A lot of my girlfriends run their own businesses and are honestly killing it in life. What are you passionate about outside of fitness? I'm passionate about people, networking, and community. I think life is so much better when you are surrounded by people that you love, respect, and can inspire you.

If you had unlimited funds for your business? I would probably open a studio and cafe. This is my ultimate goal – stay tuned :) Best lesson you've learned in business? I am not the most organized person, so I have to work extra hard at what I’m not good at. I have to write everything down. I’ve learned to outsource tasks that are not my strengths. As a business owner, you will realize that you are not good at everything, and sometimes it’s best to hire someone who can do it better and more efficiently. Time is precious! Something that's nonnegotiable in your life? God first, husband and family second, no ifs ands or buts. What's next for the business? I am going to continue to personal train and run bootcamps during the week, and will be producing more online programs! I just launched a Best Body Program, and will hopefully launch another one in the Fall.

Training With Meray My clients can expect to reach any of their goals with my help. They will gain strength, feel more fit in every way, aerobically and anaerobically, and will become more educated in fitness. Helping others achieve their goals. I have such a variety of clients. I have helped clients lose over 100lbs, clients that have competed in fitness competitions, clients that have ran their first half marathon, clients that want to build muscle, others who want to gain weight, and some that want to look and feel their best in a bikini.
Meray's Fitness Philosophy Choose a program that is realistic for your lifestyle. Set goals that you know you can achieve, and try and work towards those goals with a friend or a coach. You are more likely to achieve your goal of sticking to a routine if you have everything planned out for you. I designed my 'Best Body Program' so it is achievable for all fitness levels. The first few weeks can be done at home (so you have no excuse if you are a stay at home mom or a busy bee!) All of the exercises are linked to a YouTube video. Make sure to set yourself up for success! If you don’t know how to properly exercise, make sure to ask for help so you can reach your goals as efficiently and effectively as possible.

FOOD I am working with different women daily – many seem to have an unhealthy relationship with food. For some reason, most women associate healthy eating with dieting. They think eating healthy automatically means cutting calories and cutting carbs or fats. Your body NEEDS protein, carbohydrates and fats to function optimally.
You need protein to build muscle, carbohydrates for energy, and fats to have proper brain function and to lubricate your joints. To feel and look your best it is important to incorporate these three macronutrients into your everyday living. The trick is, determining the amount of each macronutrient that you need to have optimal energy and body composition. My clients are always amazed by how they feel on my nutrition programs. They aren’t starving themselves or depriving themselves from carbs and fats, and still manage to feel amazing and see results. The trick is finding a nutrition program that fits with your lifestyle, so you can make healthy eating your lifestyle, rather than a quick fix diet. MEA L P LA N E XAM PLE : Breakfast: Protein Pancake: 1⁄2 cup of oats, 1 cup of egg whites, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1 tsp of vanilla extract. Blended, and pour onto pan with coconut oil. Snack: 1 apple and a handful of oats. Lunch: Quinoa Salad: 1⁄2 cup of cooked quinoa, 1⁄4 avocado, diced peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and basil. You can add a protein of choice (chicken, hard boiled eggs, tofu, black beans). Drizzled olive oil, 1⁄2 fresh squeezed lemon, salt and pepper. Snack: 1⁄2 cup of hummus with cucumber & carrot sticks. Dinner: 4oz of baked salmon drizzled in Tamari and salt and pepper. Served with mixed grilled vegetables.

Just saying the word curls your lips in an oddly enjoyable
upturn like you are about to growl or bare your teeth. Translating to ‘wild animal’ in Latin, it speaks to your strength, your ferocity, your power, your readiness to roar.
I was personally always drawn to the word, often relating it to my fascination with lions. It seemed to so accurately describe their ability to protect themselves and their families, yet be so beautiful and easy to admire. It was obvious to me that they knew their power and innately took what was theirs in this life. Fierceness runs through their veins as naturally as their blood, like an ongoing permission slip to be fully themselves. While fear may be naturally present in moments, they act, they persevere, they show up, they live boldly. And…yet when we look at our own lives and we listen to the internal dialogues of doubts, judgements, and fears, fierceness can seem to be reserved for only the wildest of beasts. But, let this be your reminder beautiful, it is available to you anytime. Owning your fierceness as a female means you won’t always colour within the lines. You may feel like “too much” some days but you'll lean on your faith and true power as a woman, instead of forcing or pushing your way through. ENERGY FOODS BY KARLENE KARST, R.D. Tired all the time (TATT)? Did you know that lack of energy is the most common complaint people make to their doctors? The overall feeling of exhaustion, mental haze, and just being tired is reported by 97% of people with 10% of people who visit their doctor complaining of unexplained tiredness. Daily life stressors, lack of sleep, being over wired from technology, dehydration, and lack of nutrients are reasons we may feel drained.
STRESS is a frequently-misused term, to the point that even my six-year-old son will ask, “mommy are you stressed?ˮ It is the body’s response to a perceived stimulus – a protective mechanism from the external environment, also known as the ‘Fight or Flight’. To illustrate this reaction to stress, let’s use the infamous story of the zebra meeting the lion in the jungle. You can liken yourself to the zebra, and the stressors in your life to the lion. When the normally calm zebra sees the lion, he has two choices. He can either stay and try to beat the lion (fight phase), or he can flee. At that moment, the parasympathetic response kicks in and the adrenal glands (two, walnut-shaped glands that exist above the kidneys are responsible for the controlling the stress response by releasing hormones such as cortisol) will release cortisol and adrenalin. When the zebra decides he is better off running, the body reacts in a physiological
sense as well. Did you know that 1/3 of all the blood in your body goes to the gastrointestinal tract? And the blood carries oxygen, which keeps the tissues of the GI healthy. However, because the zebra needs power in his peripheries to run faster, see clearer, hear better, the blood supply to the GI tract closes and is shunted to the peripheral tissues. The response works; the zebra runs so fast that he beats the lion. And once he is certain the lion is far behind him, he is able to rest. The ‘Fight or Flight’ saved the zebra’s life. The zebra understands the importance of self-care. How often do you deal with stressors, and how long do you go in between sessions of self-care? When was the last time you exercised, practiced yoga, or indulged in a massage? If you want to live a high-quality, health-filled life, making time for self-care is not an option, it’s a must.

LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE One of the most consistent forms of self-care should come from eating food that nourishes our energy, stress, hormones, and physical being. Often the food we rely on for energy is the kind of food that will zap us of it, leaving us feeling fatigued, irritable and hungry. We run into a vicious cycle of grabbing for more sugar or caffeine to give us a bigger boost only half an hour later to feel the crash again. I recommend focusing on 3 key macronutrient groups: protein, fiber and healthy fat. Making it extra easy, many of the foods in the protein and fat categories also contain fiber. PROTEIN We often associate protein with its power to build lean muscles. And yes, it is important for that, but the benefits may be much greater than you imagined. Protein is important for: • Boosting metabolism • Balancing blood sugar • Nourishing adrenal glands • Supporting the immune system
• Building and repairing tissue • Producing hormones • Improving mood • Increasing energy
Aside from meat, protein sources include: • Eggs (choose free-range and organic) • Nut butters and nut mylks • Dairy (full-fat is best, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and goat cheese) • Legumes and beans (lentils, chick and green peas, black beans, kidney and pinto beans) • Ancient grains (such as quinoa, amaranth, spelt and teff)
GOOD FATS Good fats are essential nutrients that our body can’t make but need. Much of our food is deficient in good fats, especially omega-3 fats. Did you know that our entire cell structure is made from good fats? It’s true! These fats nourish joints, muscles, hair, skin, nails, the gut, the brain, the nervous system, the retina of the eye and more. After following a low-fat diet for years, my body was left literally starving for good fats, so I had a quick and impressive response to supplementation with omega-3s. Each time you eat, choose from the following good fats: avocado, olives, coconut oil, fatty cold-water fish (Alaskan salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, black cod), green leafy vegetables, nuts (cashews, walnuts and almonds), seeds (flax, chia, hemp). In addition, I recommend supplementing with 1,500 mg of EPA and DHA each day. These are the two most important omega-3s for health.
FEEL AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE The beauty in health is that if given the proper environment, our body has an innate ability to heal itself. Nutrition is the gift our body needs to rebuild. After four weeks of changes (with the addition of healthy fats) you will begin to feel a difference, after eight weeks you will see a difference (shinier hair, glowing skin, more energy, better sleep etc.) In twelve weeks others will see a difference in YOU. Remember we have one body, one life, let’s do our best to nurture the gift we have been given.

GOOD MORNING ENERGY A study published in The American Psychological Association Journal, Emotion reports early risers are happier, healthier and more productive than night owls. Not only is establishing an early morning routine better for our productivity, it is also the most important time of the day to nourish our bodies with healthy food. A healthy morning routine can be a game-changer in the energy you feel throughout the day.
5 TIPS FOR AN ENERGIZED MORNING 1. Start your day with lemon water. Our bodies are usually very dehydrated first thing in the morning. ½ squeezed lemon in 8 oz. of water will help to flush toxins, rehydrate and improve digestive rhythm. 2. Never skip breakfast. Breakfast literally breaks the fast from the night before. Your body needs nutrition first thing in the morning. Ideally you should eat within 30 minutes of waking. 3. Eat protein first thing in the morning. To jump start your metabolism, aim for 20-25 grams of protein. 4. Drink a superfood smoothie each morning. (see recipe below.) 5. Take the time to practice gratitude, prayer or meditation. Get in the habit of either writing down, or even in your mind acknowledging the 3 things you are grateful for that day. At the same time, you can also write down the 3 goals you have for that day.

We’re generally a pretty active community, but our diets leave something to be desired. Here are three (tasty) tips to get or stay lean without cramping your summer style:
SLIMMER SUMMER Make Friends with Salad
Have you ever heard the saying, “You don’t make friends with salad?” Well, I say it depends on the salad! A sad bowl of limp lettuce and store-bought dressing probably won’t make you any friends at your next BBQ. Put a little effort into selecting your ingredients, be respectful of flavours that compliment each other well, and make a simple, homemade dressing rather than using a bottled version. Your summer salad will be the star of the picnic table! You won’t have to break your diet, and you can feel proud that you’re helping your friends and family eat better too. Try pairing grilled peaches with arugula! It’s my Summer favourite.

Her home is impeccably curated and just 30 steps away from the beach, which is her source of creativity and wellbeing. After chatting with Tracey, we learn that building her career behind the lens was a process of trial and error that was fueled by her determination to create a life where no line exists between her work and personal passions. She has never settled in a place that wasn't a fit for her. She has followed her internal compass.

Long before there were digital cameras, photo filters and bloggers – there was Tracey Ayton, fully immersed in capturing the perfect shot of a centerpiece on film. She had been hired to shoot a wedding, but the floral arrangement is what had this photographer's attention. She got a tap on the shoulder from one of the wedding guests who alerted her to the fact that she was missing the entrance of the bride and groom. She just didn't want to pull herself away from the flowers! It was then that she realized she just wasn't where she needed to be. No stranger to refining her career, Tracey originally set off to study graphic design at VCC. It didn't take long (only a day, to be exact) for a fellow student to take note of her innate talent for envisioning spacial layout – but that drawing was just not her calling! She suggested Tracey switch her studies to photography, and Tracey took her advice. It was in the photography program that she found her true 'gift'. In one particular class, while other students shot their subject matter at their desks, Tracey took her project into the bright natural light by the window where the camera was best able to pick up on the unique beauty she saw in her muse. Many years ago, Tracey worked in a photo lab in her neighbourhood of Kerrisdale. During this time, she surrounded herself with the photographic process and honed into her love of interior design. As an avid reader of shelter magazines, Tracey had an “ah-ha” moment while reading the latest Martha Stewart publication and asked, “Why can’t I take pictures of homes and lifestyle stuff?” Knowing that she needed content of nice homes for her website, Tracey (with a lot of courage) knocked on the doors of 3 very stately homes to see if she could photograph them. ALL of them welcomed her! Coincidentally, the homeowners recognized her from the photo lab. She was relieved to see the familiar faces of her customers who were happy to help. It was here that the budding interior photographer honed the skills that she is now celebrated for in her industry. Today, Tracey lives by the sea with her husband and dog, Frankie. Her highly creative soul is ever evolving. She feels that people – like flowers – experience times of flourish and times in a dormant state readying for growth. For Tracey, there is no end to this cycle – and she is currently readying for growth, once again. She hopes to share the essence of her beach-side lifestyle along with her quest to create, see and do things differently. She will continue to launch and host more photography and styling workshops, bringing creatives together to do what they do best … CREATE!

A LOVE LETTER FOR DANCE To the Secret Dancer, You know who you are. You’re the child who loved twirling and watching how it made your clothes flounce around you. If no one is watching, you still skip across the street. You may have once dreamed of being a ballerina – and you think figure skating is the most underrated Olympic sport of all time. I know you’re out there. Because I was one of you. After taking ballet and jazz as a little girl, I became more immersed in this evocative and engaging world and later participated in competitions that carried me to the edge of my athletic and expressive abilities. Today, with my husband, Vladyslav Bohdanov, I help adults of all levels and abilities learn how to move and express themselves to music. After years as an instructor, I have come to realize that dance is different things to different people. For some, it’s an opportunity to socialize and keep healthy. Others see a cathartic art form – a highly structured discipline that demands a determined, almost ritualistic investment of time and energy. Whatever your view, there’s something intrinsically joyful about the sheer physicality of dance. And the good news is that it’s not necessarily about the perfection of movement. Anyone can learn to dance. Yes, even you. As an instructor at Victory Dance Club, my purpose is to make this activity – half exercise and half art form – accessible to everyone. By adopting a teaching method that transcends the disciplinary borders of my own competitive background, my style has evolved into a balance of sensitivity and precision. After all, I want students to have a memorable time as they sashay through our integrated system, which incorporates private lessons, group lessons, and fun social parties. In special group formations like our Women’s Dance Team, students learn to play off each other’s strength and energy. Every session introduces a fresh dynamic where women examine different aspects of femininity: strength, power, mystery, etc., and explore them through collaboration. While dancing offers new ways to socialize and be together, it’s ultimately about finding your voice within the group dynamic, whether that’s two people or ten. Through the act of dance, people mature physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s a rare and powerful experience that allows you to connect with others while deepening your own individuality and expression. To dance is to be human. You are strong, graceful, powerful, vulnerable – sometimes leading and sometimes led. And this reflection of the human experience is no doubt a part of why dance – in all its forms – endears to me, to you, and to so many others.

Over the Spring, something was 'calling' Joanne to explore. For her own wellbeing, she felt the need to be placed in an environment where she was uncomfortable, where she didn’t know the surroundings – or even the language. After many months of debating, Joanne decided to press pause on her work to experience the joy of going on a pilgrimage. Her travels took her to the jungles of Columbia. "It was exactly what I needed," says Joanne. With her soul refreshed, she is now back in the Lower Mainland, excited to be launching her own consulting practice and doing valuable work with ChildHealth BC.

Volunteering affects not only your mental health but your physical health – it has been shown to lower your blood pressure and contribute to a longer lifespan. One of my favourite volunteer activities is being a wish granter for Make-A-Wish. There is no greater joy then indulging in laughter while providing a service that is needed.
The activity I've been doing for a few years has been yoga. I find the act of creating stillness in my day brings me immense joy. I generally eat very healthy and love vegetables so I think that helps counteract the nights where I’m out with the girls at 3am standing in front of a poutine counter!

Set yourself a schedule and work hours. Do your best to stay within those hours. You will be more productive that way. Trust me! Set boundaries on your social media time. Delete the apps off your phone if you have to. You NEED to take time to unplug. Go outside in nature, talk to a friend on the phone. Hang out with family or friends. Stay in your own lane.
