Dri-Tec - Dri-Tec is our waterproof breathable laminate or coating. All our shell products using this technology are fully seam sealed and will be guaranteed for the life of the product to be so. At the 10/10 level Dri-Tec is a laminate, at the lower levels, 5/5 and 3/3 it is a waterproof breathable coating. The easiest and best way to care for a Dri-Tec garment is to wash it with a powdered detergent free of bleach. Rinse well to insure all soap is out of the garment and dry it on medium heat in a dryer. If using a commercial dryer, take care not to melt the jacket. Nylons are petroleum products and have a lower melting point. DWR - This stands for Durable Water Repellency. It is a coating added to the outside of our Dri-Tec fabrics and soft shell fabric at the factory to make them water-resistant (or hydrophobic). This helps to prevent the outer layer of fabric from becoming saturated with water. This saturation, called 'wetting out,' can reduce the garment's breathability (moisture transport through the breathable membrane). Durable water repellent finishes have a tendency to wear off over time and need to be re-applied. Washing the garment first will help any DWR that remains work better. A subsequent treatment with a 'spray-on' or 'soak-in' treatment will restore the water repellency. Many off-the-shelf spray-on and wash-in treatments may be purchased such as Grangers, Nikwax and ReviveX. Our DWR will stand up to 20 washings and still retain most of its water repellency if you also dry the garment at medium heat. The heat of the dryer helps to realign the molecules of the DWR and bring it back to the surface making it more effective. What Does the Rating Mean? -

10/10? The first number speaks to the number of millimeters of water in a column it takes before the fabric leaks. 10,000 mm equals 32.8 feet of water. The second number, 10,000 grams, refers to how many grams of water vapor can pass through a square meter of fabric in a 24 hour period of time. There are several methods to test the breathability. If you want to know more about that, let’s talk.

Micro-Tec - This is our name for a 100 percent polyester micro fiber insulation used in our Black Jack Parka and Cruise Trail Parka. Micro fibers are extremely fine fibers (1 denier or less). The smaller the fiber, the more air it can trap in a small space. It is the trapped air that keeps you warm, not the fiber. Bemis Tape and Hipster Tape

- Bemis and Hipster are manufacturers that makes high quality seam seal tape and embellishment tape, aka jersey numbers etc. We use both tapes to highlight bonded pockets and to add interest. It adds a technical look. You will find it on front pocket flaps and around the reverse coil zipper used on the softshells.

Bonding -

bonding is used on pocket zipper flaps and center front flaps. It’s a glue and heat process that make two layers of fabric permanently bond together, stiffing them to allow for ease of use and access to the internal pocket. Bonded flaps are found on high end expensive garments.

Laser Cutting - Laser cutting machines are computer driven lasers. This allows the factory to enter the exact dimensions of a laser cut into the machine and then cut out pocket openings and seams while sealing the edges at the same time to insure they never fray. It also gives a very sharp clean edge.

Welded Seams - This is a bonding technique typically used after you’ve laser cut a pocket opening to permanently bond another fabric like our waterproof zippers in place. This avoids having to stitch it and seam seal the stitching. Tricot Fabric - Our Tricot is a polyester fabric that is slippery and has great wickability. One side will feature fine ribs running in a lengthwise pattern, while the other side will feature ribs that run in a crosswise direction. The finished look of tricot is that of a sturdy yet soft material that can be ideal for a number of applications. We use it to line the sleeves of all fleece pieces so it slips on easily even when wearing a sweater or flannel shirt and wicks away moisture. We also use it to line the front of the same fleece pieces to hide the pocket bags, giving the interior a cleaner more finished look and adding some more wind resistance. Our competition uses a nylon taffeta which while is cheaper, holds moisture and stay clammy.

Denier - Denier is a unit of measure for the linear density of fibers. It is defined as the mass in grams per 9,000 meters. Don’t let that confuse you. Take for instance the 40d (denier) ripstop fabric that we are using for our down pieces. 40d= 40 grams for 9000 meters of that filament yarn. The 320d that we use on the interchange pieces would weigh 320 grams per 9000 meters. While denier doesn’t relate directly to the diameter of the fiber there is a correlation. A 40d polyester filament has a diameter of about 400 micrometers while 320d polyester has an approximate diameter of 3000 micrometers. 550 Fill Power and 700 Fill Power Down

- The number of fill power is how many cubic inches one ounce of down will fill. With a 550 fill power down. One ounce will fill 550 cubic inches of space. This is a good quality down that maximizes the weight to loft without the expense of higher fill power downs. 700 fill power down will quite often be 2 times the price. The advantage to a higher fill power is the garment weighs less for the same warmth. Remember the warmth comes from the thickness of the insulation no matter what it is. How much air the insulation traps is what keeps you warm. A 700 fill power down only makes the garment, if it’s the same thickness of a 550 fill power garment lighter because it takes less weight of down to give it that fill or thickness.

Zipper Garage - A zipper garage is the small covering at the top of the waterproof zippers. When you zip waterproof zippers closed there is always a small opening right at the top. To insure that water doesn’t find its way into that zipper you need to have a waterproof covering right at the top. Ripstop Fabrics

- can be a variety of fabrics from nylon or polyester to cotton. Ripstop only speaks to the square pattern woven into the fabric that helps keep it from tearing as easily. It can still tear but isn’t as inclined to tear in a straight line.

Oxford - is the name given to a particular weave of fabric. It’s a weave that gives the fabric more texture and usually a much more rugged hand.
